No way! Thank you for this great video. Wouldn't have been possible without many friends who accepted to grind this game with me. Lots of discussion went into developing strategies, and two years of trying once in a while. I saw StaleBeeflet and MrPopo runs with their girlfriend, saw MrPopo's comment on cyberscore "4 player could do even more damage" and knew I had to convince my friend to play this. Highscore/speedrunning with friends is truly amazing. Your record of Bobsled Run with Lightningwar91 is also an inspiration. This being said, this lickitung record shouldn't be compared with 1 player against 3-CPUs. It is a huge advantage to play four players. Finally, congrats to QuébecYoshi for not losing his cool in front of such odds.
The 'green liquid' isn't actually wasabi, it's green tea. You can see it on the menu at the back, あがり. Lickitung freaks out every time because the green tea at a sushi restaurant is piping hot.
So if that's piping-hot green tea, then we're left to assume the chef, as a prank, secretly sprinkled in wasabi on random pieces of sushi for his own amusement
I genuinely ponder how much of speedrunning's popularity as a whole has to do with its genesis mostly involving NES, SNES, N64 and PSX games of that era. Sometimes I ponder doing a video essay along those lines, but idk it might be too different from my usual stories and tales.
Thank you for the translation and descriptions! Maybe I should make an infographic about this, since I don't believe it's ever been truly documented anywhere.

This always was my favorite mini game, but I was always amazed how well the AI could do with the relatively complex strategy that changes on the fly. I never managed to win consistently on hard.
This game brings back memories. The announcer btw says uni-cha which means the sushi is uni or sea urchin roe. Makes sense as it tends to be one of the more expensive sushi.
Very interesting to compare the chances of category 5 CME vs this run. They are actually very close. May solar event was largest in 20 years - there are 7300 nights in 20 years. So chances were 1 / 7300 (roughly the same chances as this run).
Even though I'm pretty sure the drink is green tea, the guy's description of wasabi was so sweet and so 2000. Him saying "the spiciest sauce and multiply it by 4 or 5" just really cements it for me.
Amazing minigame and video. Lickitung is probably the most forgotten generation 1 Pokemon but it's a favorite of mine, and this minigame is the biggest spotlight he gets.
The Clefairy game could be done using the yellow buttons instead of the Dpad. I loved that one. I played the crap out of both Pokemon Stadium 1 & 2 and had so much fun transferring my Pokemon over via the controller attachment. Also, loved that Pokemon could be weird colors and this was before shinies were a thing so that was also very cool. Also, there were models of all 151* Pokemon as you could use Mew in there.
My buddy and I talked about playing a Pokémon game on 64 and how cool it would be when we were in like 3rd grade. When Pokémon stadium came out we thought we were spied on 😂
Indeed it was quite a pop off! We knew it was a new record, but we expected maybe 35 000 at most at the end of the run. It's a shame we weren't recording our sound or video, it would've been the perfect ending to this video.
I mean personally if i went to a sushi restaurant and ordered a second helping of the same thing and they charged me double for it I'd probably complain
Wow I'm glad you said that! We were actually calling the second most expensive sushi "ice cream sandwich" (in french) in all of our attempts. Not knowing what it was, that's what it made us think about. Good to know we're not the only ones!
Great video as always. There's another N64 game that uses the D-Pad (exclusively even): Mischief Maker. Would be nice to get a video on this incredibly hard game (I never understood as a kid).
Personally, I never remembered having a D-pad problem. Clefairy Says was one of mine and my brother's favorite mini game. Some of my fondest memories is playing this game with him. I need to get a copy of it soon and relive those memories tbh.
Really enjoyed this video! My best friends and I used to play these minigames every time we would get together (as well as Crash Bash, Mario Kart 64, Crash Team Racing, and more).
Suggested optimization: The designated eater should start out on shrimp (350Y) during the first 20 seconds, then switch to uni (1000Y) This should give roughly 5,000 extra points from 5 extra shrimp rather than sitting around waiting for uni to populate Shrimp have the best combination of spawn rate and score, exceeding even uni Alternately you can start on roe (250Y) or tuna sashimi (600Y) if several of these spawn Shrimp have 35 points of expected value from a random spawn (10% times 350Y) while all three other top foods have 30 points of EV However, a "perfect" run of Shrimp will only net something like 20k-30k points (15-20 shrimp) so once you spawn some uni in you definitely want to make the switch if going for a high score Obviously the uni spawn will come with enough attempts
Fwiw, there are also leaderboards for all the minigames on RetroAchievements (find the Pkmn Stadium page and look at the last panel on the right side column), though they're all inheriently done on emulator since RA submission is managed by the emu itself automatically using direct data from the game's memory. There's no way to do any manual submissions on any of RA's leaderboards that I'm aware of. Also, they're all specifically listed as "as 1P vs 3 Hard COMs" so you couldn't use multi-player strats for them.

Man, this video just made me really want sushi...
Suggested optimization:
The designated eater should start out on shrimp (350Y) during the first 20 seconds, then switch to uni (1000Y)
This should give roughly 5,000 extra points from 5 extra shrimp rather than sitting around waiting for uni to populate
Shrimp have the best combination of spawn rate and score, exceeding even uni
Alternately you can start on roe (250Y) or tuna sashimi (600Y) if several of these spawn
Shrimp have 35 points of expected value from a random spawn (10% times 350Y) while all three other top foods have 30 points of EV
However, a "perfect" run of Shrimp will only net something like 20k-30k points (15-20 shrimp) so once you spawn some uni in you definitely want to make the switch if going for a high score
Obviously the uni spawn will come with enough attempts
