No way! Thank you for this great video. Wouldn't have been possible without many friends who accepted to grind this game with me. Lots of discussion went into developing strategies, and two years of trying once in a while. I saw StaleBeeflet and MrPopo runs with their girlfriend, saw MrPopo's comment on cyberscore "4 player could do even more damage" and knew I had to convince my friend to play this. Highscore/speedrunning with friends is truly amazing. Your record of Bobsled Run with Lightningwar91 is also an inspiration. This being said, this lickitung record shouldn't be compared with 1 player against 3-CPUs. It is a huge advantage to play four players. Finally, congrats to QuébecYoshi for not losing his cool in front of such odds.
You can see at 12:45 I almost lost my cool with the 3 missed bites😅
@@quebecyoshi The legend himself appears. But you went full Lockwood and let that Clutchness run through you.
Couldn’t believe my eyes when I came into your stream and saw a score over 40k! You guys are all legends
So... We getting that 25 soon? :)
@@A88mph yes, I got another 24 with no misthrows. Didn't get many golden unfortunately. A few more 24 and 25 is next.
The 'green liquid' isn't actually wasabi, it's green tea. You can see it on the menu at the back, あがり. Lickitung freaks out every time because the green tea at a sushi restaurant is piping hot.
I was gonna say... the cup looks like it's for tea and that much Wasabi is just ludicrous
So if that's piping-hot green tea, then we're left to assume the chef, as a prank, secretly sprinkled in wasabi on random pieces of sushi for his own amusement
You beat me to it. I was gonna post the same comment.
@@midi5467 also real wasabi isn't that spicey. the fake wasabi is much more spicey because its horseradish.
@@Adam-jr4lx I was sure the stronger stuff was more authentic. I like the kick it has. I thought fake stuff would be less potent

I genuinely ponder how much of speedrunning's popularity as a whole has to do with its genesis mostly involving NES, SNES, N64 and PSX games of that era. Sometimes I ponder doing a video essay along those lines, but idk it might be too different from my usual stories and tales.
@@GamerFolklore Do it.
at the back it says the menu. they're sorted by point value.
あがり = green tea
かっぱ = kappamaki (cucumber sushi wrapped in seaweed). black/white/green.
たまご = egg sushi. yellow/white/black.
てっか = tekkamaki (raw tuna sushi wrapped in seaweed). black/white/red.
いくら = salted salmon roe sushi. red/black.
えび = shrimp sushi. white/red with tail.
とろ = fatty tuna sushi. red/white.
うに = seasoned sea urchin egg sushi. orange/black.
Thank you for the translation and descriptions! Maybe I should make an infographic about this, since I don't believe it's ever been truly documented anywhere.
@@GamerFolklore If you do end up making that infographic, here's more info for it, namely what the announcer shouts during the game
When the game starts: いらっしゃい (irasshai = Welcome!)
When shrimp sushi appears: えび一丁 (ebi icchou = Plate of shrimp sushi)
When fatty tuna sushi appears: とろ一丁 (toro icchou = Plate of fatty tuna sushi)
When sea urchin sushi appears: うに一丁 (uni icchou = Plate of sea urchin sushi)
When the game ends: へい、おあいそ (hei, oaiso = Alright, here's your bill/check)
After calculation: 毎度あり (maidoari = Come again/Thank you for your patronage!)
Additionally, when Lickitung eats the green tea, he turns red and starts flailing (too hot!). When he turns green and starts flailing, that's because he ate some sushi with wasabi in it. It's completely random which plates have the wasabi in them, which is why Lickitung's freak outs come at complete random in this game.
As a kid I heard "who needs salt?" Not knowing what sushi was, I didn't think it was odd. I assumed the rest was just indecipherable due to low quality.
@scraddles4381 im really glad this minigame didnt get localized. It has so much personality to it thanks to its japanese identity. And playing it was still the most fun even if none of that was understood.

There's something so whimsical about seeing a super lucky run. The way everything comes together just right is beautiful.
Even though I'm pretty sure the drink is green tea, the guy's description of wasabi was so sweet and so 2000. Him saying "the spiciest sauce and multiply it by 4 or 5" just really cements it for me.
A new gamer goose video, at this time of year, at this time of day, in this part of the country, localised entirely in Sushi-Go-Round?!
This game brings back memories. The announcer btw says uni-cha which means the sushi is uni or sea urchin roe. Makes sense as it tends to be one of the more expensive sushi.
We love you Goose! ❤
What an insane score, I can only imagine the pop off when they saw it,.
Indeed it was quite a pop off! We knew it was a new record, but we expected maybe 35 000 at most at the end of the run. It's a shame we weren't recording our sound or video, it would've been the perfect ending to this video.

I have no interest in either Pokémon or sushi. Was I all in for this video? You damn right I was.
You wouldn't think it'd keep happening, but it does.
It's kinda embarrassing but as a kid, I thought some of the dishes where ice cream sandwiches.
Wow I'm glad you said that! We were actually calling the second most expensive sushi "ice cream sandwich" (in french) in all of our attempts. Not knowing what it was, that's what it made us think about. Good to know we're not the only ones!
Many kids had no idea what sushi was.
At least there's no jelly donut to further confuse us.
I used to think that the 50 and 200 yen items were shoes.
As a kid, the egg sushi looked like a cleaning sponge to me. I couldn't understand what it might otherwise be.
Me too. I also thought the shrimp one was a pork chop

Very interesting to compare the chances of category 5 CME vs this run. They are actually very close. May solar event was largest in 20 years - there are 7300 nights in 20 years. So chances were 1 / 7300 (roughly the same chances as this run).

“What an unbelievable course of sushi” lmaooo
Great video as always.
There's another N64 game that uses the D-Pad (exclusively even): Mischief Maker. Would be nice to get a video on this incredibly hard game (I never understood as a kid).
I've heard good things about Mischief Makers. I would like to get to it someday, but it's after Jet Force Gemini and Quest 64 on the priority list.
Man, this video just made me really want sushi...
Pretty sure the announcer for the Lickitung game is burned into my brain.
I can still hear that mechanical ticking and ding counting down to start the snake game. Yet I can't remember its name even though the video said it.
Personally, I never remembered having a D-pad problem. Clefairy Says was one of mine and my brother's favorite mini game. Some of my fondest memories is playing this game with him. I need to get a copy of it soon and relive those memories tbh.
N64 d-pad isn't perfect, but it's functional. You might've played with busted controllers.
Yeah the switch pro controller is worse imo
3:03 "Honestly the d-pad was probably the biggest downside on the otherwise perfect and magnificent Nintendo 64 controller."
That's some subtle, deadpan comedy.
Amazing minigame and video. Lickitung is probably the most forgotten generation 1 Pokemon but it's a favorite of mine, and this minigame is the biggest spotlight he gets.
I remember taking ages to get Lickitung in Pokemon GO. I couldn't hatch him from a 10km egg for ages!!!
I spent so many accumulative hours playing Sushi Go Round with my cousin back in the day, those minigames were really fun
If I didn't already have a billion projects on the go I'd be tempted to mod precise timers and score counters and endless modes into these.
Your Electrodes seem to be upside down.
This always was my favorite mini game, but I was always amazed how well the AI could do with the relatively complex strategy that changes on the fly. I never managed to win consistently on hard.
I always thought it was so cool that in stadium 2 you also could play with other Pokémon like Girafarig, Omanyte, Crowbat etc
"Side Games" bruh they were the main games for me and my homies
Pokemon Stadium and Stadium 2 are awesome games, hopefully we will see more videos about the games here in the future. Keep it up man! 🙂
Man, it sure was nice of Nintendo to include a surprisingly-detailed battle simulator to go along with Sushi Go Round
That was super awesome, what a great team goal and display!
The Ekans 25 has my interest for sure
The legendary winkmarket got 25 about 3 days after this video!
it's a shame there wasn't a way to get exactly 19 more yen, for a perfect 42069.
Someone has to make these super niche videos, thanks Goose!
Just 19 points shy of greatness.
The Clefairy game could be done using the yellow buttons instead of the Dpad. I loved that one.
I played the crap out of both Pokemon Stadium 1 & 2 and had so much fun transferring my Pokemon over via the controller attachment. Also, loved that Pokemon could be weird colors and this was before shinies were a thing so that was also very cool. Also, there were models of all 151* Pokemon as you could use Mew in there.
Thank you, TH-cam algorithm
Certainly wasn't expecting this. Great coverage, Goose!
Wow, this is an atomic bomb of nostalgia. I haven't thought about those minivans for 22 years. But I now realise I played them an insane amount of hours.
Great video, super cool editing honestly. The CRT was done well and the hand cams were a nice touch to help explain the mini games.
Thanks! This is actually kinda more "low key" editing from me, with fewer texts and images flying in and out of the screen, so I'm glad you liked it!
@@GamerFolklore Yeah I noticed it was more subdued, but very effective editing honestly. Great job as usual!

Truly one of the greatest UNI-CHAAA moments
I completely forgot about this game and in turn forgot about all the mini games. I remember those games being weirdly super fun.
I mean personally if i went to a sushi restaurant and ordered a second helping of the same thing and they charged me double for it I'd probably complain
That's a great point!
Lickitung has a tummy ache after all this food.
14:00 wait. is it wasabi or tea?! what confusion are you authoring here goose
19 points away from the perfect score.
Sadly the score can't increase by small enough increments for that.
I just realized Utsu-P's song "Sushi Go Round" is probably based on this minigame!
I'm just now realizing that golden Digletts are not worth 3 points, but 2. Neat.
4player TAS of the sushi minigame with RNG manips would be cool lol. Maybe one day I'll do it.
The idea of Justin emailing Greg P in the early 2000s to confidently correct the ‘green coffee’ to ‘giant cup of wasabi’ gives me an indescribable feeling lmao. Thank you for including this in the video.
These are my favourite things to dig up on old forums, GameFAQs guides and other "old internet".
And he was still wrong himself. It's hot green tea.
@@ErrorlVlacro That’s why I thought his confidence was so funny lol. Who on earth would have a full CUP of wasabi with their sushi 😭
In my math, the odds are about 1 : 8750
It's a binomial distribution. In each spawn, sushi will be orange (3%) or not (97%)
P(x) = nCx . p^x. (1 − p)^(n−x)
n=65 (spawns)
x=9 (orange sushi)
P(9) = (65!/9!*56!)*(0.03^9)*(0.97^56)
P(9) = 0,000114289648
P(9) = 0.01143% or 1 : 8750
But we're considering that they would have time to eat the last eight, wich is not correct.
There will be permutations where orange sushis will spawn in the last eight.
We can also consider that would be impossible to eat the last 8, so doesn't matter wich type will be spawned and we apply the same math reduced to 57 spawns.
Of course, it would be even more hard. Approximately 1: 24366 because the last 8 spwans will not count at all.
The real odds lies between this two cases (best and worst theoretical scenarios) and I'm not skilled enough to calculate it. 😅
1:8750 is P(X=9), but we should consider P(X>=9)=1/7143. Good point about the last sushis, didn't think about this. And there's also the wasabi effect which I feel is around 25% chance of happening. Even the shrimp and tuna spawns were rare. I think the main question should be about the probability of getting >40k. It would be quite involved to consider every possible scenario and optimize them.
@@falkushlooks like you have a doc in math
@@falkush You're right! It's even harder to calculate than I thought.
Bro come on, thats Voltorb in "Thundering Dyanmo" not Electrode oof. Anyways, always love to see a new vid show up

Really enjoyed this video! My best friends and I used to play these minigames every time we would get together (as well as Crash Bash, Mario Kart 64, Crash Team Racing, and more).
Sometimes sushi places will put wasabi under the sushi so maybe why they freak out is supposed to be because they ate one with wasabi on it

@@GamerFolklore Don't go too far outside your wheelhouse.
Child me would be so proud of seeing the funny lickitung noises mastered it was my favorite minigame and was also like the only game in the universe that my mom liked to play lol. Look at them passing away that sushi (what is sushi in the pokemon world made of?). Ekans also has a soft spot in me with small child dreamlike look and music, it's almost like a Nickelodeon bumper.
Also I recently replayed Snap this channel having some to do with it. Definitely the best skill I've had at it.
Considering 32 was possible with ZERO forward boosts, 33 is definitely possible with the right RNG.
Fwiw, there are also leaderboards for all the minigames on RetroAchievements (find the Pkmn Stadium page and look at the last panel on the right side column), though they're all inheriently done on emulator since RA submission is managed by the emu itself automatically using direct data from the game's memory. There's no way to do any manual submissions on any of RA's leaderboards that I'm aware of. Also, they're all specifically listed as "as 1P vs 3 Hard COMs" so you couldn't use multi-player strats for them.
By turning the game difficulty to the hardest you get even more chances at the Orange topped Sushi
Hey Goose thank you for the nostalgia. That’s your brand, nostalgia. Next business ideas, other classic game systems? Most popular games. PlayStation 1/2? Twisted Metal cheats? Etc. Love your work thanks for the content ❤
I have a couple other channel ideas. I even have their (empty) channel pages featured on this main channel page. But it can be hard to put in the work to make videos when you're not sure you'll gain a following there. One example is that I want to do an "Olympics Iceberg", but I'm not sure if I should upload it here, or on a new channel and start a new kind of offshoot channel.
I can't wait for someone to run Pokémon Stadium through the new recompilation tool
Pokémon has a stadium?! I only know it for the minigames
Back in the day, when all the cousins got dropped off at granny's house for the summer, we played pokemon stadium waaaay too much.
I have that game and console with me today. If i can check these records, im sure one of us has hit at least 26.
Bouncing off the digglets causes your ring to take more time landing on the digglet you launched at.
Makes me wonder...
I don't think the game "saves" the high scores, like Mario Party does. But yeah, amazing memories, which are often made even more memorable when under grandma's supervision, with cousins and siblings.
1/7000 isn't even a full odds shiny odds on older generation, that seems easily obtainable.
I want to see a TAS of this now to see how far you can push the luck.
Open to being corrected, but I've checked using the binomial distribution and the chance of at least 9 out of 65 plates spawning when they have a 3% chance is 1 in 8750.
Edit: I've been corrected! The proper number of interest is 1 in 7266.
1 in 8750 would be the chance of getting exactly 9 out of 65. For P(X>=9) we get 1 in 7143.
@@falkush I'm a bit mad because I _swear_ I checked it was P(X>=9) the first time!! Upon rechecking the numbers though, it looks like it's actually 1 in ~7266

isn't it food poisoning, as opposed to spiciness
heh
The menu is literally written on the wall. Maybe not in the 90s, but these days everyone can simply google what those signs mean, even if you can't read hiragana.
And seriously wasabi? That's just green tea, it's simply too hot for Lickitung. The green freak outs are probably because of too much wasabi on a sushi though. Also, that description of wasabi is horrible, wasabi spiciness has absolutely nothing to do with chili pepper spiciness.
Poor Lickitung, drinking the too-hot green tea!! I feel bad for him!
This game was fun back in the day 😀 just brings back a lot of memories. Thanks for this video!
I never had any troubles whatsoever with the N64 D-pad, and I played quite a lot of Mischief Makers (a game that requires using the D-pad to move instead of the stick) so I definitely would have noticed a problem. I think you just had a janky controller.
