It most likely has a sheet of metal or a ball connected to Earth so it flows away from the crowd. It depends if it was a current limited supply, if it was limited to under 1mA then it probably wouldn't hurt, as the voltage must drop if it were to touch you, but if you have high voltage with no current limiting, then it will pass through your body with ease and deliver the 5mA+ it needs to kill you.

It depends if it was a current limited supply, if it was limited to under 1mA then it probably wouldn't hurt, as the voltage must drop if it were to touch you, but if you have high voltage with no current limiting, then it will pass through your body with ease and deliver the 5mA+ it needs to kill you.

I don't know if they had technical difficulties or what but the 3.5 hr event was supposed to culminate with a 45 minute display from this giant coil. It started 20 minutes late, was turned on 6 times and each lasted less than 30 seconds. The one shown here was the longest.
The first 20 minutes comprised a set of demos on large-scale e-field effects, such as St. Elmos Fire, Tesla's wireless power system (we ran the world's only wirelessly powered vehicle) and a lecture on the science behind it. Since this portion didn't feature high power arc discharges, I think a lot of folks kinda slept through it. ;>
