HEYA CONTEXT OF THE SONG FOR YOU:)
So in their documentary Suga has mentioned that this song was written when the members and himself were very mentally and physically exhausted and were seriously contemplating about disbanding to end the struggle. They were receiving a lot of hate back them for becoming noticed outside korea. They said they listened to this song and cried together.
HERE IS THE PART WHERE HE SAID IT IN THE DOCUMENTARY th-cam.com/video/wFNmiUSJg4I/w-d-xo.html
THE LIVE DEFINITELY HITS MORE THAN THE LYRIC VIDEO SO YOU SHOULD CHECK IT OUT... I FOUND THEM WITH LYRICS th-cam.com/video/qa0FAQkhA0M/w-d-xo.html

No they werent talking about women nor other ppl. Rm, Suga and Jhope wrote this song dedicated for their members. In 2018, bts once revealed that they almost disbanded due to hardships & despressions which affects their mental and physical health. Suga said in a live that after they wrote and produced this song.. They all sit together and listened to it. Suga said after listening to that song.. THEY ALL CRIED TOGETHER.
So that is why this song existed. They almost broke up.
"We walk towards the same place but this place became our last" - the PLACE they are talking is bts' career. They all became bts together, they dreamt together but they didnt expect that it'll end.

Notice how RM says tear (as in tears from your eyes), Suga says tear (as in ripping something apart), and J-Hope says fear. ARMY already loved this long, but Suga revealed it was written during a time when BTS was considering disbanding back in 2018, and the members cried when they listened to it for the first time. Knowing this information gives the song a whole new meaning.

  • @madisondaniellee
    @madisondaniellee 3 ปีที่แล้ว +193

I’ll say this for future reference, a lot of their songs can come off as “oh they’re talking about a female, etc” but 99% of their songs have depth and a deeper meaning that some people don’t think about a lot.

Suga mentioned on a documentary that he made the song and showed it to members when they were considering disband ,and cried.
For Namjoon them disbanding is like tear(sadness), and to Yoongi it is tear up his heart, and to Hobi it is fear

  • @madisondaniellee
    @madisondaniellee 3 ปีที่แล้ว +90

And yea in a sense it’s a “break up song” but with themselves. Yoongi wrote this song and the rest of the rap line also helped as well but during a very hard time in the band’s career and they were all suffering mentally and wanted to disband so this is about them and when they played it for the other members they all cried. 2018 was a very rough year for them.

This song was written by the rapline about their discussion on disbanding the band.
So for RM it's tear as in crying.
For suga it's tear. Like a heartbreak.
For Jhope it's fear. As in even talking about it causes him fear beacuse he can't imagine not being in bts.

👑 Ok I hope I remember all the stuff I wanted to say, so I'll break it down as much as I can 😁
    1. Interpretations- BTS are true artists, and like any artist they may create with a certain vision or emotion but if you can connect to their art in a personal way, then it doesn't matter what the intention was behind the art, only that you took something from it. That in itself powerful.
    2. The floral print shirt, love! 💜
    3. The outro! Where can I find your music?
    4. Thank you for not using some of the more sus lyric channels. Dial is one of the most accurate, and BBTS9717 and Af Taehyung are pretty good too.
    5. For the Cyphers AF Taehyung may have the best lyrics for those but may want to cross reference some stuff on Doolset
    6. Sound was cool 👍 didn't hear the construction really at all.
    7. Almost forgot, many of the lives have some fanmade subs and they can be pretty accurate. So if you don't want a lyric channel , you may find a live for it.
    8. Longer, shorter doesn't matter, I personally like the discourse, and I like your interpretation.
    9. Thanks! I hope I remembered everything, if not well....there is an edit button 🙂

You guys definitely caught on to the anguish and intensity of this song. Thank you for this thorough reaction I enjoyed it. Yoongi (Suga) actually wrote the melody when the members were thinking of disbanding and they all cried together listening to it. Rap line all contributed to the writing of the lyrics. I think it's really interesting that you guys felt that this is a "break up with yourself" song b/c I think this is true in some ways. While the song is about bts I'd argue that the battle was very much internal as well for each of them individually.
I really liked when Ziah talked about the "crossroad" idea at 32:35. This song is very much about trying to make a life-changing decision that is painful and difficult. While I'm obviously happy they didn't disband back in 2018, but this song really conveys how deeply upsetting this was for the members at the time. It's always a very emotional and powerful performance to watch as well.

23:11 When Suga raps “goodbye for me is t.e.a.r.“, I think he refers to J. W. Worden four tasks of grieving. According to this theory t.e.a.r. stands for the process of grieving:
    T: To accept the loss,
E: acknowledge the pain of the loss,
A: adjust to a new environment and
R: reinvest in the reality of a new life.
Great reaction. Greets from Europe 💜

This song (from their 2018 album Love Yourself: Tear) is emotional for BTS due to circumstances surrounding its creation, and for ARMY once we found out what it was really about...we had no clue what some members of BTS were going through and considering doing in early 2018 - until the MAMA 2018 awards show in December. They won Artist of the Year and in Jin's acceptance speech, he admitted through tears what a difficult year it was for them which made that award so much more meaningful and he revealed that they had talked about breaking up because of their hardships. Almost the entire group was weeping at that win and his speech.....ARMY didn't even know until spring 2020 that the lyrics to this song referred to that difficult time, when Suga revealed that in their 'Break The Silence' documentary.

This was written for the members when they almost disbanded. It was revealed in one of their documentaries that when the song was finished, all the members listened to it and cried. It was also at a crucial stage in their career where they had to decide if they will renew their contracts, which they all eventually did a year earlier than its expiration. In a sense, it is a breakup song, but a breakup of the group.
When this was first released, ARMYs were like 🔥🔥🔥. About a year after when the context was released, we're like 😭😭😭. In the latter chorus, RM pronounces tear as in crying, JHope pronounces tear as in tearing a piece of paper, and Suga says fear. In a way, it's how they saw the group and their work during the toughest of times. Jin said in an award show at the end of 2018 that fortunately they pulled themselves together and will stay as a group for a long time.

Just saw this from a comment from another tear reaction. It’s too good that to share it here.
    On SUGA’s verse he said:
    “Parting/Goodbye is, to me a T.E.A.R”
Psychologist J. William Worden provides a framework of four tasks to help us understand people journey through grief. Healing happens gradually as grievers address these tasks, in no specific order, going back and forth from one to another over time.
Task 1: ‘T’o accept the reality of loss
Task 2 : ‘E’xperience the pain of grief
Task 3: ‘A’djust to a world without the deceased
Task 4: ‘R’einvest yourself into the World
When I first read this I was in awe, and then I realized that I haven’t been able to fully understand how amazing the lycism BTS has.

I read somewhere the other day that T.E.A.R. is an acronym. I have no idea if Suga used it this way-he's not a native english speaker, but it kinda fits. 'To Accept the reality, Experience the pain, Adjust, and Reinvest (J. William Worden's Four Tasks of Mourning)

My opinion: Pause ALL you want! I'm here to hear what you have to say about the song! I enjoy it. As Jimin says: "You nice. Keep Going!".
PS.I'm so ready for the cyphers. However, you're gonna love the three linked rapsongs from their MOTS:7 album; "Intro: Persona" (RM), "Interlude: Shadow" (Suga), and "Outro: Ego" (J-hope). They are all linked (theory by Carl Jung), they are all totally different and they all have mvs. Enjoy fellas. 👑
Edit: If you have interest in film editing - and based on how great you are at breaking down lyrics and good at finding visual clues, you guys would LOVE the BU (Bangtan Universe). It's a storyline that runs through a lot of their work, and nothing is handed to you - you gotta figure it out on your own which makes it SO cool. And EVERYTHING has a meaning - from patterns on the wall, the camera angles, the lighting and colouring, the clothing, the symbols throughout (and the list goes on). Once you know their faces (because without you won't pick up on it), that would be amazing to see your journey should you ever want to do that.

I LOVE hearing your thoughts on this song, please continue to take allll the time you need!
Hell in "Lucifer" had me thinking a lot too, just have to say. You both said so many great things that show emotional life experience and your ability to cross-connect content across differerent media, such as TV shows, novels and lyrics by other rappers. * clap *
Many of the things you absolutely nailed in your analysis, esp in Suga's verse (good job identifying their voices!), are brought up thematically in a couple of other BTS songs I recommend to you:

Autumn Leaves (or Dead Leaves) - earlier album, produced by Suga
Thematic hint: not so much "anger", but fear of a moment that will hurt, and shouting at the other internally to "just do it", to build up that stress hormone high you need to feel invincible even when someone gives you the killing blow...

Outro tear is such a masterpiece song. The producer is docskim. I hope he produced song again for BTS. He has this dark, gloomy style in his production. I really like his style. Dosckim now mainly in charge for instrumental of their performances. If you saw a band behind some BTS performances, he was one of it. He also the one produced jimin solo song lie.

I know at first impression you might think that this may be for a woman but as our fellow ARMYs explained, it is for the boys during a hard time of their careers, where they thought of disbanding. Suga actually explained it in the Break the Silence docu-series.
With that in mind, I hope you would react to the Outro Tear live (highly reco the dior outfit one). Seeing them perform completes the experience. Seeing their facial expressions tells a story of what they went through during that time. th-cam.com/video/UJSDI8iYh6Y/w-d-xo.html

As said by RM, TEAR could mean tear(shading tears), Tearing apart(by Suga's point of view) and Fear(by Jhope) but all of those words connects and symbolizes the pain felt in BREAK-UP. For BTS, it is a FRIENDSHIP BREAK-UP. It is when they almost disbanded as a group during their tough years.

Edit: You nailed it with the double entendres comment. 💜💜💜Ok, so yes, BTS said they wrote this during a very difficult time when they almost disbanded- but it is not just about that time. They have spoken about this. If you look at this song as part of the progression of a love story in the three album Love Yourself trilogy (LY:Her - new love, bright & euphoric; LY:Tear - dark & painful side of love, loss of love; LY: Answer - the answer or Epiphany is that you must learn to love & care for yourself before you can love & care for others.) Yoongi/Suga has said over & over that they tell stories with their albums & that there is a story arc. He has said that the albums are meant to be listened to “in order” to understand the themes/stories they are telling. Also albums are part of a set or trilogy with an overarching theme. RM/Namjoon also said he had “lost someone” at this time and it was very painful so he rode his bike down to the Han River & that’s where some of his verse came from. Please don’t let yourselves get boxed in to the “there’s only one right translation” mindset that is reflected in many replies. This limits BTS as the artists they are. 💜💜💜
Many Kpop-oriented ARMY don’t ever want to acknowledge that a song might be on one level about a woman or lover. They still somehow believe that BTS hasn’t dated. 😂😳🥸 Also it IS true that many of their songs are about their relationship with ARMY at least on a surface level. They talk to us through their songs often using many symbols & phrases that mean something only to ARMY & BTS. That is why it’s said that BTS & ARMY have developed their own language. 🙋🏻‍♀️💜🙋🏻‍♀️
Thank you for your sincere discussions of BTS’ music & lyrics. As a Literature teacher I’m here to say great art has many interpretations & meets each reader, viewer, listener where they live & within their own experience.

    • @ktsleeve
      @ktsleeve 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I can see through the replies that all the things they have said about Tear & its role in the album have been lost. Yoongi said they wrote this during a very difficult time when they thought about disbanding & that’s important to know. However it has now become dogma that this is ALL the song is about which really limits the greatness of this song. Youngdae Kim who wrote the book BTS:The Review (really the best book so far about BTS) recently said in an interview that Outro: Tear is their greatest masterpiece. You can’t imagine what it is like to see it performed LIVE. You feel like your face is melting off from the heat of their passion while your heart is being ripped from your chest. I’ve seen it three times and don’t think I breathed once in any of the performances. 💜💜💜

I was excited to see how long the video was going to be, because it probably meant you were into it. I echo the requests to watch this live - it's breathtaking.

Watching their LIVE performance of this song was the most surreal experience in my life, no joke. I ain't the only one. please watch the interview of SHAWN STOCKMAN (of BOYZ II MEN) ON BTS'S ROSE BOWL SHOW. He said, their concert was one of the best shows he's ever seen in his life even not knowing one song going in. I myself didn't have big expectation before going in but... it was just unbelievably incredible and made me pay $680 for their next concert. Their concert tickets were so hard to get so I ended up buying a resale ticket. But it was totally WORTH it!

I always think anyone's interpretation of a song has value but the only thing i'd say is that i don't think they are talking to a younger version of themselves because of how in the present the lyrics are if you get what i mean (lyrics like "why are you tearing it up" and "goodbye to me are only those moments, flashback" implies that its in the present and the pain is making them remember better times). Its definitely about a goodbye that happened to them in a more recent "moment" and there is a lot of speculation of what it is actually about. Suga said he wrote it about the band disbanding but i don't know if rm ad jhope wrote their verses about that topic. But if you guys relate to it in that way thats very cool

One thing BTS doesnt really sing about is romantic love. For some reason, most of their songs are about themselves; their inner struggles, ups and downs in their careers, their relationship to members, depression, fears, self-love, self-loathing, self-doubt etc. Most of their songs in which they write their own lyrics are always about themselves and their struggles.
I think this song is about their struggles when all the members had a really hard time in 2018, when many of the members were depressed, confused, and mentally & emotionally exhausted to a point where they actually talked about disbandment. It is a well-known fact among armys that BTS went through some tough times in 2018 due to depression, confusion, fears, and serious burn out. They revealed it in front of fans when they were on stage to receive the artist of the year award in Korea in 2018. All the members were crying while making a speech. While making a speech for the artist of the year award, Jin said that they actually had such a hard time and that members sat down and talked about disbandment. When Jin said it on stage, all the members cried.
I think the depression and fear came from their huge global success, which they didnt really intended or anticipated, so they didnt really know how to deal with such global fame and success. That led to so much confusion, identity crisis, fear, depression, and mental break down among the members. I think this song was about it, about the thought of disbandment and the pain they all felt thinking about disbandment.
Yes, this is a breakup song, but not with a woman but with the members.

This one actually is a breakup song, but not with a woman. It's the members breaking up with each other. Suga wrote the song in the beginning of 2018 when they talked about disbanding. It's the pain of the end of a dream and the breakup of people who are so close that they literally share an identity. In that respect, you're right about them talking to themselves. BTS is a unit, they are each a part of that whole and that whole was talking about separating into it's individual parts and separating from one another. ARMY didn't know the context of the song until last year, but you should see the live performance. There is no doubt that the pain they sing about was very real. Even the memory hurts them. Also, this is why ARMY loves BTS so much. Their songs are so deep and have so many levels. On one level or another, they really speak to you.

  • @al.m.5048

Many BTS songs fit more than one interpretation, so this for example fits in the LY narrative, it's the ending of the Love Yourself : Tear album, where the "lover" angrily admits that this is a toxic relationship, whether that relationship is with himself or with someone else (deliberately kept vague). Singularity, the beginning of LY:Tear is still the stage where someone is sinking into darkness, losing themselves, losing their voice, erasing themselves in the relationship. Fake Love is the one right after it where they admit point flat that this is a toxic relationship, then Outro:Tear is the last song, and it's basically the ugly breakup...BTS also constantly references and ties songs together so for example the lyrics of Singularity, Fake Love and the one right before Singularity (Outro:Her) have lines that tie those three songs together. Here in Outro:Tear, RM's part references back and flips around lines from songs in the first album in the series, Love Yourself:Her (ex Best of Me) where the lover is still in the illusioned state of Love. It being the last of the album LY:Tear, that bit about "the answer being known" is a reference to the LY:Answer the last album of the LY series.
The other interpretation it also served was personal for BTS as BTS's Suga wrote it in reflection over their almost disbandment in 2018.
Your interpretations were also quite cool. 👑

I really love your analysis. On one level you are very correct. This was part of the album talking about the end of love: end of relationships. At the same time the group has said this was actually specifically written about themselves. 2015 through 2017 were very difficult for the group and they faced a lot of hate. At the beginning of 2018 they sat and talked about the possibility of breaking up. They have never said which members wanted to but I think maybe RM was one because his lyrics talk about self loathing and wondering if he ever loved them at all. As though he felt guilty for considering it. Suga clear did not because he sings so aggressively about feeling betrayed. When the song was presented to the group they all cried. It shows you that songs can have multiple meanings and they're all pretty legitimate.

Well, it kinda is a break up song.. theres just no romance involved. This is one of the only songs where i love Suga being aggressive, usually his music is too aggressive for my taste. In the end, i think Jhope took this song with his ending, thats also propably why they desided to put him last in this song.
