Ida was fun, not really, but my antenna, a double stacker survived. Had tv with my generator while all other communications, internet, cellular, phone, were out. Powering a router and one of these units would allow watching local updates to smaller devices instead of powering a tv from a generator. Ida made me buy a old radio regardless.
Thanks for the great review! About four months ago, I bought my Tablo 4-tuner based on your review. It is my first antenna dvr setup in 20 years, and I love the Tablo and it's programming guide. It makes my antenna setup 5x more valuable. I can watch recorded shows anytime, and on any TV, and the programming guide is very affordable. I also bought my antenna setup based on your reviews. Thanks so much!

Question, I ordered the older quad from Amazon a couple days ago. It's scheduled to arrive tomorrow. It sounds like you would be sending it back and ordering the the new quad from Tablo? In your opinion the HDMI and the new remote are really important additions that were missing from the older version?
@@ayalave75 For myself, I'll get the HDMI version if\when my quad box dies. If you have the option to grab the HDMI version now, I would just for convenience.
Antenna Man - You are subtly funny as hell. You have encouraged me to cut the cord (DIRECTV at $175/mo). Sent you a request for an antenna recommendation. Let’s go!
Tyler, I just wanted to let you know that I have used my Quad HDMI for a week now. I am calling Dish Network and telling them to come get their hardware. I used your promo code, thank you! My only complaints are: 1) while viewing TV guide they need to play live TV thumbnail in small P.I.P. 2) The remote needs numbers so you can go directly to a channel without browsing the guide 3) when you select a live TV show on the guide, it should take you right to viewing instead of options on how to view. A person should be able to select recoding options another way. 4) There needs to be a search for show feature instead of browsing to find a show. 5) Next level would be option to stream apps. I would pay extra for this feature. I am very happy with its performance, picture, ease of setup and interface along with commercial skipping. Thank you for bringing Tablo to my attention.
I have the older Tablo Quad running in my house. It's wonderful to use and it's a nice treat to be able to watch TV on my laptop and cell phone. Also I can check the TV lineup and schedule recordings from any device. While having an HDMI connection on a Tablo would be nice, I really don't mind running it through my Roco.
The premium subscription service for commercial skip will not be available for Tablo units activated after July 19th. That is a notice on their website. Using your guidance from your reviews I just replaced my now defective Fire Recast with the Tablo Quad HDMI and I could not be happier. Right from the start, the Tablo is much better than the Recast had ever been. If you want to stream you will still need the Firestick or Fire TV. The picture quality is excellent on all 3. I do use eithernet to connect everything. With this DVR I can watch recording on any of my TV's which have the Fire capability but like you said it is not compatible with my Smartphone. Thank you. I am very happy with my new DVR. You helped me make what I think is a good choice for my needs.

Thanks for the review and the discount code! I used it and ordered this unit for my home theater. Please note - I never see this mentioned in reviews for this kind of device, but often the requirement for an HDMI equipped OTA tuner is specifically for home theater / projection purposes. My "TV" is an Epson projector. Even if it had a tuner built in, I'd need a tuner in my equipment rack; as I'm running HDMI to my projector for video only. Also - for this purpose, a large screen projector - it is *very* important to have the un-recoded raw MPEG2 as transcoding artifacts could be visible on such a large screen. This will replace a Mediasonic Homeworx model that has stopped working, the glorified tuner box style you mention in your review. I'm hoping this will work better as I was never very happy with the Mediasonic device.
After using the Tablo for a couple years I've reverted back to a Homeworx cheapo model. The Tablo never had the usability that I wanted. I loved the design and the remote was so slick and minimal that it reminded me of my AppleTV appliance. However, I didn't need or use the subscription based sharing functionality (App for my TV, tablet, etc) though I toyed with it. There were two things that killed the Tablo for me: 1) I want number keys on an OTA tuner. If I want to go from channel 4 to channel 48 I don't want to bring up the guide and scroll-scroll-scroll-scroll-scroll-scroll-scroll-scroll-scroll-scroll to get to the channel I want. The channels are numbered. A tuner without a number pad id a horrible design. 2) I really like being able to easily off-load my hard drive recordings to a server or something. Super easy on the Homeworx but very difficult on the Tablo. My understanding is that there *is* a way to do it - it's some linux file system you can install open source software and drivers on Windows to read, but I'm not dealing with that. I want to plug and play.
Thanks for the great review and discount on the TABLO. I just made the purchase along with the 1TB Seagate and look forward to delivery. This paired with my Clearstream 4V will be the perfect setup. Now I won't have to listen to "I missed the Masked Dummy again!" from she who must be obeyed.
It would be the bomb diggity if Tablo would come out with one of these having an ATSC 3.0 tuner. I know they are still watching and waiting, but a guy can hope eh? I judge the tuners in these OTA DVRs based on my experience with Samsung. Samsung makes some of the finest tuners on the market. I do wish Tablo would either upgrade their tuner or their splitter. I have two of the major networks in my market with weak signals. My Samsung TV has no problem with them. My Tablo has issues. I'm hoping ATSC 3.0 will correct this. I'm thinking about picking up a competitors product by the end of the year to see where I stand. Come on, Tablo! Up your game!!!
@@jonathanzappala I understand. I have a Toshiba that doesn't even have a digital tuner its so old. Good news it does HDMI and a Roku works great! I doubt I'll buy a new TV just to get an ATSC 3.0 tuner
Just cut the cord, last week. Thanks for all your antenna evals and OTA DVR's. Have a Mediasonic Homeworx and had a Tablo DUO. I live in Monroe Ct and have 270 degrees of channels of interest. Also located next to some high hills directly betwix several stations,. All channels but one are UHF. Based upon the technical details of the Televes LR mix got the LR UHF only model. It works like a champ but needs to be on a rotor. And that is the problem for me with the Table. I could not manually scan for channels. The Mediasonic is great. I have used a PLEX server for years and the non-compatibility of Tablo with PLEX and thus no use of NAS storage for recordings is negative for me. I have replaced my HDHomerun prime cable tuner with an HDHomerun Flex Duo OTA. I drive my main TV hdmi with a computer. But all computer and wireless devices on my network can access OTA and other media content. Thanks and kudos again for all your great videos.
You may need to purchase a second antenna, and possibly a signal amp so you can received all of your available channels without a rotor. It's not easy because combining 2 antennas using a spiltter/combiner will reduce the gain of both antennas by 3db. Perhaps Tyler can recommend an amplified combiner that joins 2 antennas without any loss of signal. I also agree that if a recorder doesn't support PLEX or a NAS, that would be a negative.
I have the older Tablo Quad tuner with a 1TB drive in it. Does a great job, I have no complaints. I went with the Tablo over the HD Homerun for the TV guide interface. My wife liked that better than the demos of the tabbed popout style of the HD.
You never say what it cost. It looks like right now it's costing $200 for the hardware and then I'm not sure what the subscriptions cost did they have a lifetime membership option or yearly? Also me and a buddy have the homeworx WH150 model and love that thing. Where he is at he cannot get internet would this thing work without internet? Thanks for all your great videos I appreciate all the work you've done I bought the homeworx DVR based on your review.
@@BlondieHappyGuy Your other post ask my question in regards to the cost of services and what the guide provides for free. My homeworx DVR has been fine but I only watch over the air TV about once a day for weather and maybe a program or two that I have dvr'd so I'm not a real heavy user with it but for under $50 I got my money's worth.
Tablo's website says no lifetime subscriptions for the hdmi versions. A continuing $49 a year. It is supposed to work for two weeks without internet assuming you can get live tv and or have recordings. The two week limit says there is still something that keeps it from running standalone for longer than two weeks. The one good thing of the hdmi version is full 1080i that you don't get with the non-hdmi versions. Finally the hdmi version won't stream outside your network and has to have a subscription to stream inside your network via wifi or ethernet.
Ten years ago I bought a new computer with a two channel TV tuner and used media center for my recording interface. It still works well with some fixs and 3 party guide for windows 10. Looks like more options with the recording fuction with this DVR. Now I know what I should replace my current system with...Thanks
It would be nice if one of these devices would have 4 antenna inputs and every tuner could choose any one of the antennas to connect to on the fly. Then you can have a truly powerful system that can pull in channels from fringe areas from multiple directions without rotating the antenna. Maybe that's too specific for wide appeal, but I would buy one.
@@deadcarnahans1932 directional antennas have always been used with tv. Back in the analog days, a signal could bounce off a large building and arrive at the antenna slightly delayed from the line of sight signal. This would cause a double image, or ghost image, on the screen. Directional antennas minimized this effect. With DVT, the second signal may cause enough interference with the line of site signal to create errors in demodulation. Having a directional antenna is also good for longer range reception. Rejecting a signal from behind usually means the antenna is that much more sensitive in the front. You might want this if your tv transmitters are far away. If you live, say, 50 miles from 2 cities and said cities are in different directions, you might want 2 directional antennas to pick up both.
@@ThatEEguy2818 Well that makes sense. I thought about adding second antenna but would need a second tuner or I'd have to rescan for new channels every time I switched antenna. So, I agree with your comment about multi input tuner. What would happen if I used a splitter in reverse to join the antennas?
@@deadcarnahans1932 it can work sometimes, but not always. If you're combining uhf and vhf antennas, you can use a uhf/vhf combiner without issue. Will work great. If you're combining two antennas of the same rf band, there will be losses and interference. Probably the biggest problem will be if an interfering signal comes in from the antenna that's not intended for the signal. If your primary signal is weak, noise from the second antenna may be enough to knock out the reception. Another scenario is the second antenna could have a small lobe behind it, or to the side, that creates destructive interference with the main lobe of the first antenna. It gets very complex and varies from location to location and antenna to antenna. This is the reason for my original post.
@@ThatEEguy2818 Sounds like you've been dealing with these issues before me. I live on the highest ground in my county. My antenna is a 4 bay mounted 27 feet above the turf. I feel there should be a practical way to get more channels. Right now, I'm beyond sick of the junk tuners. Latest one wont record per booked time event changes the date. Records different channel, duplicates channels, deletes channels, Changes time zone, shows different time on different channels. Issues I see again and again. Audio and video being out of sync is another major issue. Can you recommend a good tuner for me that is not one of these China clones?
I would have liked to see how fast it moves through channels while holding the up/down button (like a tv's internal tuner). I.e., more about the live-viewing experience and how easy it is to channel surf (use it as a normal tuner). Roku's tuner has become almost unuseable. A standalone tuner would be nice. I presume such would focus on the experience more than a swiss-army-knife tv would.
You forgot that stations like to discourage DVR use, so the record ahead/delay option works for stations that purposely offset their shows by minutes, so you lose minutes on another show on a different station. This trick was started in the later VHS days, so I always recorded 5 minutes early, and late, so they don't rob me of the entire show.
Tyler, I really enjoy your channel. I'm using a Recast with my Fire cube and like the way it's integrated with the Fire system. But I wonder how the integration would be with the Tablo Quad. Any chance you could do a segment covering that aspect of OTA DVRs and their interface with the different streaming platforms (Fire, Roku, etc)?
We have a house with coaxial cables run from the outside of the house to each bedroom separately. None of them are connected with a splitter anywhere. We have internet run to the house and connected to one of these cables which is connected to a router inside the house. Every TV is a smart TV/Roku thing and is connecting to the router wirelessly. If we install an OTA antenna and connect one coaxial cable to it and then connect to a Tablo (or whatever is best), would that be able to allow all the TV’s to connect and use the OTA signal? There are 4 TV’s in the house. Hopefully without a monthly fee.
Just curious, is there anything you didn't like? I hate Paid Promotion videos as they rarely say anything bad about the product which they are reviewing / err being paid to promote. I've rarely purchased a product that didn't have a few warts or areas the company could approve on. So are you giving this 5 stars because there are no issues?
Great video! I'm a fan of the Antennas Direct antennas. Just got the Antennas Direct ClearStream 2V TV Antenna to replace the older version. Works great! I may try this Tablo. Hope it has a better tuner than the AirTV Anywhere!
I bought one of the Tablo’s that is white and I get 118 channels I live in Easley South Carolina end it does great when I just had a regular antenna that hooked to a digital box I only got 50 channels with that and I thought that was great but I got more than twice the channels with Tablo. I have a question I get better reception in the summertime than I do in the winter why is that I live on a hill and I’m just. curious why the antenna doesn’t get the same channels all year round and this is the first year I’ve had the Tablo so I haven’t had it in winter yet
Why is the Roku streaming stick and most others, not recommended for the TV connect option? I am installing the Clearstream 4max, with The Juice pre-amp, and 4-way power splitter. We are within 20 miles of most towers. I will be installing where I take my satellite dish down and using the R-6 cable already there. Makes sense, because it is over 30 feet in the air and connections are there. Although the cables are connected to every room in my house, I will only use 4 on the splitter. Problem is, I just bought a Sony Bravia 85” Smart TV that I can plug the HDMI cable into for the DVR. If I go with the network connection, looks like my new Sony isn’t compatible. All the other TVs are Sony Bravia older models that will require a streaming device. I also wonder why my apple devices and computer are not supported, since there is an internet connection I can use with the subscription. Maybe you can recommend another DVR that better suits my needs.

Antenna Man, Thanks for the useful info for cord cutters, now more than ever. What are the pros and cons between the Tablo Quad HDMI and the Tablo Quad? If 4 family members are watching tv, can they all record a show at the same time? I recently received the Quad HDMI as a gift, but can't get the lifetime subscription for it. Why is that? Which is the best value antenna that is easy to install, particularly if I can't get up on my roof to install it? Found out Apple TV does not work with the Tablo HDMI.
I love all your reviews, I went with the Boss Max antenna And Tablo Duel Lite. My only question is, does Tablo make a unit that does not have the 15 to 25 second delay using the Live TV. Mty samsung tv changes chanells instantly as does a Homework cheap DVR i bout but I love the Tablo device and remote.
Which has a better guide this tablo hdmi or tivoli edge, had the cm7600 which let you record a program auto matic on any channel with one stting. Only thing with with the cm7600 was every month you had to factory reset the unit.
I'd really liked to see a review done without having the paid subscription. I understand what they claim the differences are but seeing it would be really informative.
Excellent video. What caught my attention is that you mentioned the Tablo picked up more channels than your TV. Do you think you will ever do a shoot-out, to determine THE BEST, most SENSITIVE external-to-TV box, be it Tablo, or any other brand, ?
No plans to do that. It would cost thousands of dollars to find out. The issue with weaker tuners is usually only with older or cheap brand models anyway
I just got a Tablo, but when I tried to view what I had recorded it said there was no free storage space, even after I put in a thumb drive and formatted it. Can I record without out the thumb drive?
I have an HdHomerun as well. I like the cable grid like guide as opposed to the "slice ' video of the Homerun. Since the Homerun gets the job done,I will stick with it,though. Also have an old Tivo HD with lifetime as well.
@@PC4USE1 But lifetime of the Tivo unit, not your account. One reason I won't renew with Tivo. Tablo ties the lifetime to YOU, not your device; a big plus. Also, Tivo is killing 4 tuner models for OTA viewers!
Umm, thanks for your time. I would like to know if this DVR unit can send a signal over the air to smart tv, or devices like a Roku device or Apple TV; Second, In the Video, it was mentioned This unit can send it to other devices. I would like to know if it can send it to a phone that does not ride on the same network? I look forward to your response. Jason
Just one question. With antenna in the attic. Setup the table in the garage. Connect the tablo to the router via wi-fi. I will have spectrum internet going to the router. Can I then watch OTA channels from the Tablo as well as streaming services via internet, such as Netflix or Apple TV over the router wi-fi?
The Tablo Quad HDMI does not work with streaming apps. If you want to use streaming apps alongside your OTA channels you need the Tablo network connected tuner at the link below along with a streaming device like a Firestick or Roku. bit.ly/3AhjYg0
A few things: 1. If you select a program that has new episodes every week, can you pick record this episode or all episodes like other cable system DVR's? 2. Do they (or if not, could you recommend) after a channel scan, press a button or remote or press and hold to do a quick "select all"..instead of manually selecting every channel. Thanks
Hi Douglas - With an active TV Guide Data Service subscription you can select either ALL or ALL NEW episodes of a particular series to record. And after a channel scan, all HD channels with excellent reception will be pre-selected. At that point you can choose to select additional SD channels and or channels with lower reception quality.
I purchased this tuner last year and I couldn’t get the hard drive to work with it. I even tried another hard drive. I called tablo many times and at first they were helpful but claimed it wasn’t the units problem because they tested it remotely and claimed it was fine. I eventually just gave up and disconnected it. I was just wondering what hard drive you used for your set up? I used a Wd elements one both times and never got the Tablo unit to recognize it. Any suggestions? Thanks, Love your channel!

Travel to remote locations (backpacking) without cell-service and am interested in recording mp4's for viewing on trail? Would also be nice if there were a dvr that could likewise record free streaming content for the same sole-use purpose?
Confusion. For me, big selling point was ability to watch any of three tvs with one connection, but then you say you need Ethernet for any of the secondary tvs?
You get very few choices with satellite based systems these days. Dish has the Hopper DVR and DirecTV has their Genie DVR. If you're a TiVo fan, you can still order a new TiVo THR-22 DVR for DirecTV from WeaKnees.com. Back in the earlier 2000's, there were lots of choices for DirecTV, but not any more. Personally, I'm a TiVo fan and have the THR-22 for my DirecTV and the TiVo Bolt OTA for my over the air (4 tuners to add to the 2 on the DirecTV unit).
Tyler, is there a dvr that has an ota antenna input and hdmi input for an external streaming device? A while back i thought I saw some dvrs with this feature with multiple hdmi inputs and one output to tv and 1 usb port for recording programs. With this device you could scan for ota vhannels and the ext. streaming device. I can't find this device anymore. Or can I connect a converter box to the evolve dvr using an hdmi cable to connect the cvtr box to the dvr and make it work? Thanks for your time.
Are you able to move or copy Tablo recordings (shows, movies) to a computer's harddrive or microSD card??? If so, are there any recordings that will NOT allow copying due to copyright protection???
Dumb question - Once a show is recorded on to the hard drive (sold separately), can the show be archived or moved to another hard drive? Thank you in advance for any help.

Tyler, I have a Tablo dual lite DVR sitting in my closet due to the prolonged delay required to change channels. I’m talking about approximately 10 seconds or longer. Does the Tablo HDMI change channels faster? I was never able to find a way to access the second tuner on the dual lite DVR, unlike the TiVo branded DVR‘s.
Hi Michael - Changing channels on the HDMI models will be faster as there's no need to transcode the video and create several segments of video before playback can begin.
Tablo site says that internet is required. I don't want my computer or modem involved. I have good outdoor antenna and good TV. Just need a good quality tuner. I've been through over 9 common, cheap, tuners. They all have the same basic software and issues as you are aware. Junk. What can you recommend?
What exactly are the drawbacks of not paying anything? No add-skip, and ? . How does it handle stations that do not transmit their guide? And you MUST purchase a hard-drive, correct?
You still get a 24 hour guide without the subscription. The subscription gets you a two week guide, commerical skip, and the ability to wirelessly connect multiple TV sets. You do need to purchase a hard drive
@@AntennaMan Tyler, my HDMI Quad does not support multi device or the app. I searched for two days how to do it. From what I read in forums, only the network supported quad has that ability.

I have the dual tuner tablo and I love it!

Thanks to both of you for the kind words
There were two things that killed the Tablo for me:
1) I want number keys on an OTA tuner.
Would like a tuner sensitivity comparison. Also does it connect to plex
At this point, if it isn’t ATSC 3, I automatically think “obsolete”.
@@stuartstuart866 Then stop using your existing TV and recorder and keep waiting
I’m so hesitant now to buy any nice new tv since it won’t have a 3.0 tuner.
@@jonathanzappala I understand. I have a Toshiba that doesn't even have a digital tuner its so old. Good news it does HDMI and a Roku works great! I doubt I'll buy a new TV just to get an ATSC 3.0 tuner
@@wesmckean1443 yeah I don’t want to have to get a separate 3.0 tuner in 10 years, well it would have to be something like this dvr if I did.
Great video as always keep up the great work.
Nice job Tom Watts son....you're a pioneer, a rebel and idealistic. Well done my freind!
Tyler- how would you say the quality of the Tablo tuners compare to the tuner you usually recommend?
I have the older Tablo Quad tuner with a 1TB drive in it. Does a great job, I have no complaints. I went with the Tablo over the HD Homerun for the TV guide interface. My wife liked that better than the demos of the tabbed popout style of the HD.
Bought another Flatenna through your link...
Liked Subscribed Shared...
@@rj.parker Thanks for clarifying that for 50 bucks I could buy another basic DVR a year for that fee.
I'm semi rural here and get 85 channels from the East. There are stations to the West also.
Why are directional antennas the norm?
Latest one wont record per booked time event
changes the date. Records different channel, duplicates channels, deletes channels, Changes time zone, shows different time on different channels.
Issues I see again and again. Audio and video being out of sync is another major issue.
Can you recommend a good tuner for me that is not one of these China clones?
ATSC 1.0 or ATSC 3.0 tuner? For OTA reception, does it have a drill down signal strength diagnostic mode?
I would have liked to see how fast it moves through channels while holding the up/down button (like a tv's internal tuner). I.e., more about the live-viewing experience and how easy it is to channel surf (use it as a normal tuner).
Roku's tuner has become almost unuseable. A standalone tuner would be nice. I presume such would focus on the experience more than a swiss-army-knife tv would.
It takes about 4 seconds
Cool piece of equipment , thanks for the awesome review.👍
You forgot that stations like to discourage DVR use, so the record ahead/delay option works for stations that purposely offset their shows by minutes, so you lose minutes on another show on a different station.
This trick was started in the later VHS days, so I always recorded 5 minutes early, and late, so they don't rob me of the entire show.
Just move to a Tablo quad from the original Air TV and it is working much better for me. Seems to have much reception.
You're on the team....
Thanks for the video
Hi Tyler, I don’t know how to send you a question so here goes, are you going to do a review on the new Tablo Over-The-Air Digital Video Recorder?
Are you going to review the 4th gen Tablo
I have 4 TV's in my home, and they all have Amazon Firestick connected. This means 4 antennas. Will Tablo eliminate that antenna problem?...
Donc we need a tablo on each tv to get the signal from the main tablo?
Did I understand you to say ……to broadcast to other multiple tv’s using a Roku one would need a subscription? Thanks!
Thanks for the video and information

I can tell you, commercial skip on recordings and two weeks of TV guide vs 24 hours which allows you to schedule recordings way ahead. That’s it.
Does this use data from internet or just using modem as a wireless source?
How is the tuner sensitivity on the tablo?
Hey Tyler. Tablo had a new subscription free, fourth gen DVR. Do you have a video on the works? I would like to see what you think about it.
The new Tablo literally just came out less than a week ago. Be patient, I will review it sometime in the future.

A few things:
