      Will the Sling/AirTV app put *👉the antenna channels👈* into the **Fire Sticks' TV guide?** You know, like the way the other free TV apps like Pluto, Freevee, Xumo, Plex, adds live TV channels to the program guide.
      *👉WILL IT PUT THEM IN THE GUIDE?👈* That's the main thing I want to know!

    I've been using an AirTV2 along with Sling for almost two years now. Highly recommended! It's not perfect and a little quirky from time to time, but it gets the job done and being able to watch the locals when I am out of market is always nice.

    Dude, you are so awesome. I live in a valley in the Santa Monica Mountains (near Malibu, Ca) and assumed I couldn’t get much in the way of over the air tv. Wasted thousands on cable over the years. Your channel gave me the confidence to try an antenna…..I got 102 channels using your advice. Didn’t even have to climb on the roof. You are the man! Love the channel…..the droning intro “Hi, I’m Tyler the antenna man” is fabulous and should be trademarked. You should get an agent (no I’m not one), you could easily be being doing late night talk shows, and morning shows etc….free the people from the bonds of money grubbing cable companies! :) Cheers!

    My son just set-up an AirTV 2 at his apartment in Maple Shade, NJ (just across the river from Philly). Thanks to his indoor antenna at his apartment, he's able to receive over 60 channels. Combined with Pluto TV and Crackle, he basically has a cable TV experience with zero cost (except of course for the one-time upfront cost for the AirTV 2 device).

    I live in the mountains of southern Colorado. I have a small mountain to my south about 2 miles and a big mountain to my north about 20 miles. In the good old analog days I would point my TV antenna to my north and get the bounce signals from the translator to my south on San Antonio Mountain in New Mexico. Hey there, Tyler the AntennaMan!
    Thanks for the detailed review of the AirTV2. It's great to see how it integrates local channels seamlessly into the Sling TV app, making it a convenient choice for cord-cutters. The ability to access it on multiple TVs and even outside the home is a big plus.
    I'm curious about the setup process for the hard drive. You mentioned that the AirTV2 requires the purchase of a hard drive, but you can choose the storage capacity. Can you provide more information about compatible hard drives and any recommendations you have?
    Also, how's the user interface and navigation within the Sling TV app? Is it intuitive and user-friendly?
    Overall, it seems like a smart solution for those who want to enjoy local channels without the hassle of switching inputs or paying extra fees. Looking forward to hearing more from you!
    Keep up the great work on your channel!

    I’ve been using an AirTV Anywhere for about a month now. My complaints would be it takes a second or two to tune in the channel, the audio volume is way different then other Sling channels, the slightly lower picture quality and lack of preview when fast forwarding. Also they (Sling) should add the ability to extended recordings, for example live NFL games where overtime is always possible. On the positive side it’s totally integrated into the guide and Sling UI which makes it super easy to use. Setup was also fool proof via a mobile device. I plugged in my antenna and a few clicks later had all my OTA channels. One thing to note is the fan in the AirTV Anywhere is loud, luckily mine is in a closet upstairs or it would drive me crazy.

    I've enjoyed the AirTV2 since I am a Sling subscriber anyways. I picked up one of the external hard drives that AirTV recommends on their help page and have had very little issues with setting it up. I've found that the AirTV2 tuner was less forgiving with my weaker signals than with a direct coaxial connection to my TV. Sure, the signal will come and go on the TV, but the AirTV2 will just throw up an error code and quit trying to tune into the channel. Otherwise its been worth it!

    I just got this and installed it. It blacked out some channels, namely the major networks, from out of market. Weak stations that normally come in did not (the HD Homerun did the same thing) even though the channel scan added them. The picture quality is definitely lower resolution and cloudier. 🙁🙁🙁🙁
    UPDATE: I did a rescan using a zip code in an adjacent town in the next county that watches stations from the two cities I needed, and it added the missing ones to the program guide. Still, even though it scanned the weak channels and they are on the channel guide I can’t stream them. The HD home Run did the same thing.

    I learned recently that ATSC 3.0 will be coming soon to my area. They were only showing new TV's on the website that have the built in tuners. What can I get to hook up to my 2 year old TV to get the new standard broadcasts? That would be very helpful.

    Hi, I have an airtv 2 and i connected a HD about two years ago. I just last week it stopped working. I called sling and they said to format it and put it back in. It was a 320 gig HD but after I formatted it it was only >99 gig. I ordered another HD, and it was 500 gig. It was an off brand similar to the other one. When i plugged it in, it it recognized it but won't let me record anything, and says HD not connected. Got any suggestions?

    I have many ways to record OTA, but none that record closed captioning. Does AirTV 2 record captioned videos, and can it connect to your network to move that video to another machine?

    • @scottlarson1548
      @scottlarson1548 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The closed captioning in ATSC is embedded in the MPEG-2 data fields so they're always included in the video. You need a device (like a TiVo) that can read them.

    • @RickPaquin
      @RickPaquin 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@scottlarson1548 Yes, you are correct. The player I use has no CC. capability and when the TS file is compressed to MP4, that CC encoded info just isn't there even if I use a player that supports CC. I really prefer to have the actual captioning as part of the recorded video so that it can be played independently on ANY player with captions. Perhaps what I'm looking for just doesn't exist. Thanks.

    • @scottlarson1548
      @scottlarson1548 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RickPaquin Yes, unfortunately with ATSC the CC data is stored in a data field that is very specific to MPEG2 and unless the program you're using knows about them , it won't include them. It looks like ffmpeg does know about ATSC captions but I don't know what it does with them when transcoding.

    • @RickPaquin
      @RickPaquin 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tyler, I'd like to see more DVR reviews as well. Many people stick with cable, simply because of their "easy to use" recording services. Still, others would like to build their own PERSONAL libraries of recordings like they did in the old VCR days. But you can't off load recorded video's recorded via cable to build your own personal library or to use with other recording systems, so this is a major limitation. And, Cable only provides limited space for your recordings and there are usually added fees for their recording services.
      But for OTA, there are USB capture devices for PC's that use various software solutions that allow you to record OTA programs to the hard drive attached to your computer. I.E. these capture devices create tranportable video files, such as standard MPG2 or MP4 files that can be used with most video software for playback, BUT, they are NOT "turn key" systems for a novice! And who wants a PC running all day just to record a few programs?
      I know friends who have cut cable and are looking for a self contained, plug and play device that can plug in, hook up their antenna, and plug into their second HDMI port for powerful recording capability. Being able to add additional drives would also be nice. The bottom line is that it has to be dirt simple to use for those who never mastered re-setting the clock on their VCR, AND no subscription fees!
      There ARE some cheap boxes with tuners that will record over the air and play back to your TV via your second HDMI port, but their scheduling options are VERY limited and their UI's are challenging to use. They are CHEAP JUNK in every respect. Some do have internal hard drives with limited space and no way to connect up additional drives.
      They are looking for the ULTIMATE OTA recorder. Powerful with plenty of bells and whistles, and easy to use with no subscription fees.
      The ultimate recorder should be, simple to operate, have powerful scheduling options, and the ability to record transportable, standard MPEG or MP4 video's to an external hard drive or possibly across your local network. Also full support for CC.
      In addition, a phone app option would be nice with the ability to stream your recorded video back to your phone. Many wouldn't mind spending a premium price for such a device, if it has all the bells and whistles, but I don't think it exists now for any price. Perhaps I'm wrong?

    QUESTIONS: 1) Is there a commercial skip feature? 2) Can you put a hard drive in it (rather than an external drive). 3) Tablo has an option with 128 GB, would AirTV hold the same amount of recordings if you used that same size drive?

    • @AntennaMan

    I'm still waiting for airtv to get the station information and show schedule on their guide right in my market so I can actually schedule recordings (which is why I bought it), and the tuner in the airtv 2 isn't as good as the tuner in my cheap Sharp Roku tv that only cost about $50.00 more. Wish I could get my money back at this point.....

    Thanks so much for this review.
    I'm glad you mentioned local channels default to 720p. It's a deal breaker for me. I'm not a videofile, but I find it hard to watch 720p. I can go from 4k to 2k without too much visual suffering ;), but I find the visual suffering hard to take watching 720p.
    I want an OTA DVR that intergrates with SlingTV, that has a built in hard drive, and the local stations are in at least 1080p. If the Tablo came with a built in hard drive I would get it. Thanks for that review too. The only reason I want to get a DVR is so I can record football games and I find I rarely have to do that.

    Hi I have sling tv and I do not pay for it except during Syracuse basketball season to get ESPN and sports networks then after the march madness is done I ditch the payed sling tv and go with free channels only. This is a great way to use it for ESPN and then stop ESPN after your sports season is over. If you like baseball you can get the sports package for baseball then you can ditch it after baseball is over for the year. So this is why I love sling tv you can get it free year round and then pay when you want no contracts.
