Tivo Skip Mode is a great feature when it works. I've had numerous occasions when Skip Mode did not work so had to fast forward through the commercials. I am using Tivo Roamaio with 4 tuners, so I can record 4 shows at once. If Skip Mode would work 100% , this would be a great product, but sometimes the ski[p mode was not added to a program that should have Skip Mode.
@@richardgusztaw5091 Very true. SKIP Mode is inconsistent. You can report missing skip or errors to the following site: survey.confirmit.com/wix/1/p3075425841.aspx
@@richardgusztaw5091 I've used that Skip survey site many times and you are correct. It gets better for a little bit, then goes back. I too have not received an email back and I would love to hear back from them, so I know what you are saying.
OTA TiVos are the best. I have a Roamio that records when I am at work. I love classic westerns and comedies. All the best shows for free and no cable bill. It's the only way to enjoy antenna TV.
I don't know about the TE4 but I do I get TiVo+ with the Roamio. When I press the TiVo button on my remote I see MY SHOWS, WHAT TO WATCH, TIVO+, APPS, and SEARCH.
3:42 I was DTV Installer for six years, and some customers actually complained that DTV sales people told them they could fast forward live to skip commercial, so when ever i started an install I'd explain that to them first before moving forward. You'd be surprised at how many people think they can fast forward live TV. It took a few customers a minute or two before the light buld would turn on. The look in their eyes is was always priceless.
I had been watching for a Tivo for several years to replace my Channel Master DVR+. With the sale and additional $50 off, I bought it. The tuner in this is excellent. Better than the DRV+, Toshiba, Samsung, and LG TVs. I use a rotor on the antenna and since getting the Tivo I've not had to turn the antenna. It's pulling in weak signals from 3 different areas (Pittsburgh, Johnstown & State College) without readjusting the antenna. The TH-cam app on this is excellent too. I don't know what they do with the app, but it's a lot faster than the other TH-cam apps I use on other streaming devices. Very happy I purchased this (through the link) Also, thanks for putting me on to WOWY! I LOVE that station! Thanks Tyler!
Getting a Tivo for recording OTA was a great transition tool when we cut the cord in 2011. Been using Tivo with Lifetime service ever since. Don't know how long Tivo service will exist but will hang with them as long as we can. Watching and sharing recorded programs from other Tivo units in the house is a great feature too.
Does the Tivo rely heavily on the network? I had purchased a Tablo Quad w/HDMI thinking that it wouldn't use my WIFI, however during heavy WIFI usage, I noticed that there was heavy buffering. I'm afraid that if I purchase the Tivo that I'll run into the same situation.
@@dishmanw Sharing programs between Tivo units is done across wifi. The guide info comes from the internet. Tivo has tried hard to be an "all in one" DVR and streaming unit. They seem to always be behind in the streaming department. Some ppl knock them for this but if you only rely on them for DVR functions they shine. We use Roku or the smart tv to stream content. A four tuner Tivo Roamio for OTA with LIfetime service is an ideal unit to buy just for DVR. It's easily upgraded to larger hard drives, more durable than other newer Tivo units like the Tivo Bolt or Tivo Edge.
I purchased a TiVo Edge from Channel Master last year. Great unit. I actually am using two antennas to get stations from two different markets, and the Tivo gives me the correct guide information for all of the channels I receive. It works much better than the Channel Master DVR+ that it replaced. I would highly recommend getting one if you use an antenna for your main TV viewing like we do.
Sounds like the remote control actually works since it’s performance wasn’t mentioned and this is a trustworthy reviewer. I’m still astounded that so many other over the broadcaster TV DVR’s have remote control issues.
I've had a TiVo Roamio OTA for about 8 years. I paid for the all-in monthly fee option which is a great idea. I love the machine and it still works fine. The Roamio is missing a lot of streaming options like SlingTV but otherwise I love it.
TiVo still doesn't have great streaming options on the Bolt or the Edge. If you want the best TiVo device for streaming, it would be the Tivo Stream 4K.
@@albertwiersch9852 Buggy software seems to be an established fact of life in the broadcast TV business. In particular, the recording of programs and series hardly ever works correctly. I own two other DVRs (CM7400 and DVR+, both purchased from Channel Master). They are both horrible examples of electronics engineering. My expectations are low.
@@ericg7490 I been using channels for 3.5 years now. Absolutely the best DVR for me. I admit it can be a little technical for someone not familiar with the hardware it can support. But I have it set up with my Synology NAS with 12 TB drive. Also houses my TV and movies in one place.
I bought my TiVo Bolt OTA/Cable several years ago and got the lifetime service. So glad I did. It made it simple to switch from cable to ota because it works with either one. I'm glad I had to foresight to not buy the cable only model.
I'm moving in 2023 and have made a note to do a consult with you post-move. I cut the cord a good 10 years ago, and have been a tivo user since the first year it came out.
great device. only 2 issues I have with it. No ATSC 3.0 tuner and only 2 tuners instead of 4. When they come out with that model I'll for sure buy on to replace my Tablo quad.
Ever since AARIS bought Tivo, the customer service has been lacking for older Tivo model. I own a Roamio VOX for the last 3+ years. I purchased it for about the same price as the Edge is selling for. It has 4 tuners instead of the 2. For the money you are better of finding a new old stock Roamio VOX.
I purchased this model about 3-weeks ago and it is a very good unit, but after setting it up,found out from customer support that the unit requires about 75%-95 % signal in order to get the tunner's to work and get the pic on your tv.I went to lowes and bought a distribution amp and installed it along with the 75ohm terminal caps for the unused terminals. The unit has a lot of info about how to do functions and reminds me of a Sat box,to a degree? Also the tech support is available 7-days a week and they speak English and are very easy to understand.I also did buy the all in one service.
Nobody ever makes it clear if the Edge will also record from streaming channels. I know that video on streaming channels are many times on demand but now we have webstations with near parallel to OTA stations with daily and weekly lineups. Being able to record something at the time it is streaming and watch it later - is this called timeshifting :) - would be a plus. I know of one sure deal but its an subscription model. Does the tivo edge record everything that it can view?
Been waiting for this product Threw channel master , Had a TiVo bolt with cable so I could record my favorite shows and fast forward the commercials which I hate them . Now have dropped cable Internet only saving 8 $ a month great product 5 stars !!!!!
I have had the TiVo Romano OTA since 2017. I paid about $349 with all in service then for the 1TB version. I did add a cable card slot to it and used it for limited basic cable with Comcast for a while but now I'm on OTA and finally getting an outdoor antenna Up this week. The TiVo I think was and might still be the Cadalic of cord cutting devices. I have all the features like commercial skip on my older unit. Every thing works like you said. Your review is very accurate. I don't even use the smart apps on my tv because the TiVo is so convenient. The TiVo+ streaming service is a nice little add we got recently but I mostly use Netflix for streaming and Plex for streaming my own collection of movies and shows off a PC. The TiVo edge would have faster processing power but I don't think I'd buy it to replace my tivo until they have ATSC 3.0 capability. One thing that is nice about the TiVo is the companion devices like the TiVo mini. I have one in my bedroom and it brings all the live tv and recorded show to a 2nd tv plus is also a streaming device too.
Thanks for saying that, Ronnie. I have the Roamio. Appears to be all the same features and capabilities too. I don't think I can justify buying a new one without any noteworthy upgrades.
I picked up a OTA converter box from View TV with programmable recording feature for $35 on Amazon. Uses USB flash drives for storage. It works great and has even better reception than my TV’s tuner!
I have the same thing, bought maybe 2 years ago. Mine shuts down occasionally and sometimes locks when trying to boot. The biggest problem is how slow the UI is. I watch 1 show on my TV and use the ViewTV to record a second show. It is a steal since it records at 1080 and 720, depending on what the station sends out. I can watch the files using VLC player on my mac if I want. I wish the TiVo was
Awesome videos and service. I'm learning a lot - Thanks! I was about to buy the Tivo Edge but it wanted a monthly subscription fee of around $7. I think the link you're providing is to buy the edge bundled with the lifetime subscription at a discount which is also cool, but it's still paying the fee. This cutting the cord is added up ;)
Hey Tyler! You did a great job of overall explaining how the TiVo works. I use a TiVo Bolt OTA which isn't really much different. I love the layout of the menus, ease of setting up One Passes for shows, the guide, etc. The Bolt will also upscale to 4K like the Edge even though shows are normally 720p or 1080i. My Bolt OTA has 4 tuners and a 3TB hard drive, and it does cost me $7.53 per month to run it, but I don't mind the storage space, even though I've never exceeded 13% yet. The deal you have on the Edge with the "all-in" is a great deal, but I really need the 4 tuners, but a great value for many! There are many used Bolts on eBay, but you must be careful as there are older models of it that are outdated. The current Bolt OTA also has the "voice remote" which I never use. Mine is set to IR remote mode so I could "teach" my Universal RF10 remote with which I can run everything in my system just by feel. Also worthy to note; the SKIP feature is hit or miss. It gets information from the network to provide "skip" information for the TiVo. The SKIP isn't always available even on Prime Time main network shows, which gripes me some nights. But, you can report the shows missing SKIP or incorrect SKIP information here: survey.confirmit.com/wix/1/p3075425841.aspx Another note on SKIP, is that it can be set to manual or automatic which is nice. I also really like how quick you can turn CC on and off and change SKIP from auto to manual or vice versa just by hitting the "Info" button while watching a show. The apps are pretty limited so I don't use it for that purpose, but instead use a Roku Premiere which has much more up to date apps. available on it. For the most updated apps. with TiVo, they have the TiVo 4K Stream device. But for OTA recording, you just cannot go wrong with the Bolt or the Edge, they're wonderful units!
@@g9-anne513 I ordered the proper PMR (parallel magnetic recording) Western Digital internal hard drive from WeaKnees (authorized TiVo retailer/servicer). The drive cost more than the TiVo did. They sell all kinds of upgrades for TiVo units.
I have the Bolt also combo cable/ota. Downside are those 2.5" hdds. I found a new original 1tb WD hdd I just upgraded my 500gb. maybe later this year I'll add the 3.5" hdd with external to convert it. For $25 brand new hdd not a bad deal
Yeah, it kills me when a company comes out with a new model of something and it is actually a downgrade. The Bolt OTA has 4 tuners and the Edge only has 2. They probably saved $2 by leaving the other 2 out.
I had Tivo back in the 90s before DirecTV added their own version. Tivoli was WAY better tech, for sure. But this thing makes sense for us cord cutters. Thank you!
I hooked mine up by wifi ,but you can use ethernet also. The guide takes about 24 hrs to load up completely, but then you can go in and assign, the guide the way you want it too.I also went with a Roku unit alongside of the Tivo,so now I am a real cord cutter,PS,I had Orby TV for about 1&1/2 years and they went bankrupt.
@@wadebarnett2542 ya, I've got the old 4 tuner Roamio ota. It's getting pretty slow and long in the tooth. I'll probably just upgrade the hard drive and cross my fingers for atsc 3.0
You can still get the Bolt OTA through several sources with the later OTA versions having 4 tuners and stock 1TB hard drive. My Bolt OTA with 4 tuners and 3TB hard drive runs me $7.53 per month to run it. I love it and having the extra tuners.
@@bigredwag I got the 4-tuner cable & ota bolt refurbished from Tivo. Now I'm finding out that it doesn't run the new Hulu software that lets you record from antenna (if you get Hulu). Apparently the app software is already built in? I thought you could download new app software.
If you go to Settings, Help, Account and System, Diagnostic, it shows you everything about each tuner: frequency, PIDS, signal strength, SNR, corrected and uncorrected errors, and more.
We just added an Edge OTA to our second TV; have a Bolt OTA on the other. I've been using TiVos since the Series 1. They're an indispensable entertainment device, cable or OTA. Didn't take long for my wife to understand why I said "I won't miss the cable, but I will miss the TiVo" when we were packing me up before our wedding. :) TiVo has had the user interface in a good place for a very long time, but I do miss the TiVo guy on startup, and working Thumbs Up/Down buttons.
I agree, the user interface on Roku and their remote does not live up to TiVo's. Even You Tube TV cloud does not have the same options as the classic TiVo box does. It is much easier.
Is this Tivo Edge right for me? I'm getting old and a lot of this technology has passed me by. I don't have cable, I use an antenna. All I want to do is to be able to schedule tv shows to record while I watch another channel. Then I can watch the recorded tv show on another night, whenever I want. I'm not looking for any other features. I don't need gaming, streaming, internet connectivity, or fortune telling. All that stuff makes my brain explode. Thanks!
Hey there. Looks like no one answered your question a year ago on this TIVO. I am looking for the same simplicity and this unit seems to fit the bill. Of course, there will be a little learning curve but only navigationally, I presume. Hope you made out OK. 👍
@@kimharman9402 Thanks for your comment. We DO have access to some streaming services, such as Amazon Prime and Paramount +, so we can often watch a tv show on a streaming service if we miss it on network tv. And we do stay busy in our lives, so we haven’t yet felt it important enough to purchase this device. Hope it works for you if you try it out!
I am now using tablo the subjects come through with glassy eyes and tan skin . I connect the antenna cable to the TV than subjects are clear. Outside antenna Clearstream 4max tm
TiVo has always been making the 4 tuner units in the Bolt and Edge. The 2 tuner version is just a scaled down, lesser expensive unit. In fact, if you have a cable subscription the TiVo Bolt for cable has 6 tuners, but the OTA has 4.
I've used a Tivo OTA Roamio since 2014. I love it! My only complaint is I wish you could add more streaming apps. For example, Disney+ isn't available. Otherwise, if you cut the cord but need a great DVR/streaming device, look no further.
The newer TiVo Bolt and TiVo Edge are still very limited on streaming apps. If you want the TiVo interface, they offer the TiVo Stream 4K which is much more up to date on apps.
Two questions Tyler...1) with this setup is it possible to pickup a channel that you couldn't previously because the system might pickup a repeater that you didn't know existed and 2) will this pickup Nextgen channels as they become available?
The current TiVo Edge and Bolt are ATSC 1.0, so no they won't pick up ATSC 3.0 channels. However, TiVo has stated they will come out with a USB dongle to enable these units to pick up ATSC 3.0 at some time in the future. With the amount of people using the "lifetime" and "all-in" plans, they'll be under pressure to make this happen.
The tuners in DVRs of every make and model (and I've seen hundreds) are 100% proof positive more sensitive than the tuner in your tv. Point blank... Period. I have signal readings (from a signal meter) to back up this claim. 100s of signal readings... From 8 different tv markets... On any and every antenna, pre amplifier, distribution amplifier of all kinds and shapes... On every brand of tv multiplied by 100 on each brand. Now, with that all said... I highly recommend a DVR for OTA. They are slick. For the most part, and for most people, they work well.... Just like your tv. But have a weak signal, too strong of a signal, a big jump in signal (indicative of obstructions)... And that DVR will underperform a tv every time. Pro tip#18 Install a 2 way splitter. Antenna lead feeds it... 1 output to tv and 1 output to DVR. Make sure you ALSO scan your tv. If you're getting funny results on DVR, change input to TV and see if it handles it better. If it's the same... You have a different problem. In that case, call The Antenna Men.... Or someone else with a signal meter and experience troubleshooting an OTA system. Probably a simple fix or change... But without tools... Good luck pin pointing.
I've got a perfectly good Tivo Bolt with the rare option to use cable or OTA. I switched from cable to an amplified window antenna and it's amazing. It seems the only major difference with the Tivo Edge is the ATSC 3.0 tuner.
I'm not sure if Tivo will release an ATSC 3.0 tuner. A source tells me they are done with DVRs. The current model should be good for at least ten years
I absolutely agree. I really dislike the weird configuration of the boxes for Edge and Bolt. I'm considering switching to something, like Amazon Fire TV Recast, that is not unpleasantly irregular to look at and place.
What does it matter what it looks like? It’s just a digital machine that sits next to your TV and records shows for you.. It’s not like it’s clothing that you wear and should therefore care what they look like.. It’s just a box that performs a function for you, so I’m not really understanding why you care what it looks like.
If you don’t understand why the shape is disturbing to people with OCD, then you probably don’t know what OCD stands for. I have it too. There are worse diseases to have for sure but, it’s a disease.
I wish Tivo would just let you scan for channels in your area and not have them come up with a zip code. I can scan for channels but I get no guide data for them if they are picked up by the scan only.
I used the zip code for initial setup and also did an auto scan. The TiVo guide also has options at the bottom right of the guide to filter your favorites (A) or all shows (C). Make sure (C) is selected then you can go to your favorites list in the menu and add only the channels you want to see in the guide. I had to write them all down on a piece of paper so I wouldn't miss any. My guide also showed duplicate channels in the list like 2-1 and 2-1 then 6-1 and 6-1. I put check marks on the first channels listed and skipped the duplicates. Then you can select (A) again to only show the channels you want to see. Here is a link to help you find your missing channels in the guide. Your model may not be identical to the one in the link but they are all very similar. tivoidp.tivo.com/tivoCommunitySupport/s/article/Missing-or-Incorrect-Channels-from-Lineup
That's a problem. The channels you add by scanning don't have program information. Eventually - maybe, sometime - Tivo adds those channels (with program info) but ever since they started using their own program info their information has been inaccurate and lagged behind other guide providers. The only work-around I've found is to check program guides on Zap2It or TitanTV and record shows manually.
By using the ZIP code and auto scan all of my channels including some distant channels that I don't receive were listed in the all channels list. I just had to manually select the channels that I actually receive. Also make sure that you're connected to the internet and that you do a manual update in the menu to see if it's actually loading. When the unit does an update that is when it also updates the program information. Hope this helps.
Tablo hdmi vs Tivo Edge Hmmmmm I had the Tablo quad for 2 days and took it back. It said the app would work with my Samsung tv. No play or record functions, only live tv. Grrrrr. Maybe HDMI version would be worth it. I don’t like to bog down my network anyway. Any comments would be helpful.
@@chrisscifilink77 I bought my mom a Tablo OTA DVR for Christmas and it turned out the app wasn't in the Tizen App Store so I bought a Tivo Stream 4K at Walmart to set it up.
The roamio ota has 4 tuners, but frankly, they're not very good tuners and you'll have a lot of trouble using it with weaker DTV signals. I know, I have one.
I've had a Roamio (all-in) for about 6 years, and it's been stone reliable. 4 tuners, and I can access its menus via internet. I think I paid $300 during a promotion, and I'd hate to be without it now. As you said, it's just plain dependable for recording what you intended. Great UI, well thought out. The picture quality isn't quite as good as what I get from the native tuner on my Samsung TV, but it's acceptable.
TiVo's are great units. There are multiple "video out" options to choose from for the unit to possibly scale to another resolution more suited for your TV.
I have a Tivo Hd that I found cheap with a subscription. Hooking up an antenna and scanning gives a great experience on a 13 year old machine. It has limited internet channels now since Tivo deleted them. I upgraded the 160 HD to a 1 GB HD. Tivo Edge looks great ,though.
@@g9-anne513 Just saw your question. Tivo HD is the name of the device. I purchased one at a thrift store which just happened to have an active subscription. Very interesting, informative, and educational. Well done presentation. This TEVO sounds and seems like a excellent product. Thank You For Your Time and Strong Efforts.
I wish TiVo done this several years ago for OTA, Tablo already beat them to the punch, that TiVo Edge is a bit overkill for streaming features and the price for things I already have with my other streaming devices. I don’t record that much new shows anymore, my area lost some channels due to mergers.
@@estradaj777 why are DVRs for OTA so disappointing. We didn’t have much problems with VCRs, we still can’t record everything from OTA due to limitations from digital signals.
I have it and the only problem. they had not updated the full line up after repack for Houston. I am waiting for them to answer my email. But, I love it!
Thanks for the Tivo Edge review. I have a Tablo Quatro and it's awesome when working. It has bad wifi setup. I would like something more stable and dependable.
I didn't see or hear a coupon code, so I'll go watch again. I really don't like it having only two tuners. That bites! If I have to, I can catch up on the NBC and CW sites. The other networks are making it hard for non-cable and non-dish subscribers to watch missed shows. I had a Tivo edge with four tuners in 2018. The first one lasted 2 1/4 years. Tivo sent me a replacement for $49. That one lasted for three months! I thought cutting the cord would be easier.
The Bolt and Edge TiVos do run hot. You can find a replacement fan on Amazon www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00839XK5W/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_6?smid=AEELF2HAVZFED&psc=1 and an instructional video on replacing the fan th-cam.com/video/iZvDvhujtwQ/w-d-xo.html that will drop 10 degrees off the "ODT" (on die temperature) right off the bat. I also have a computer case fan always blowing on it from the rear which drops the temperature even more. Heat will destroy these things fast, so keep them cool.
The Tivo's remote and channel GUI is (and always has been) much better than DirecTv or dish because it can be customized easier and it is not filled with ad garbage. You forgot to mention that the SSD needs protection from power surges - otherwise you might lose recorded programs.
Your videos, Tyler, have helped my immensely in Cutting the Cord. I chose TiVo Edge OTA to record programs on local TV. BTW, I live in the Chicagoland area about 25 miles from local towers. My bedroom tv is a Roku tv. TiVo edge ota is not on that tv. I discovered the many many channels available that are not available on my Samsung TV where the TiVo Edge is connected. I only have up to channel 66 with the TiVo Edge. On the Roku tv I can access channels up to the 300 and 400’s. I have the same OTA antenna on both tvs. Why can’t I access all these channels on my TiVo Edge OTA device? Any suggestions are much appreciated.
The guide looks really great!! That's one thing I really dislike about my HDHR Quatro 4K. The guide stinks and I get more disgusted with it every time I use it. But, the remaining functionality is pretty decent, and the price in comparison to the Tivo is more attractive for me. Also, I think 2 tuners is a little limiting. But otherwise it looks like a nice piece of gear. Thanks for a great review, Tyler!! ~Frank
With all of the HDMI and HDCP protocols in place these days, no you can't save and copy recordings. Even the Bolt only has a 3.5mm audio-only output. The Edge does have any analog output at all. My old DirecTV TiVo THR22 does have composite and s-video outputs that I run to my old Pioneer DVD recorder (has hard drive to edit) if there's a show or commercial I want to keep.
The unit has two USB ports on the back. I wish Tivo would unlock them so you can expand storage. Not sure what the USB ports are for if they aren't being utilized.
You can increase the storage on the Edge, but it is done by either using a PMR (parallel magnetic recording) notebook drive which are VERY expensive and VERY hard to find. Regular drives will fail quickly. However, you can increase your storage with an external drive (PMR less expensive and easier to find in 3.5" version) by using the SATA port on the motherboard. Here is where you can find all the information and instructions you need about doing this and buying what you need. www.weaknees.com/tivo-edge-kits.php Also, the Weaknees kit comes with everything you need including the drive, enclosure, cables, tools, etc. for that price.
This looks better than the Tablo DVR, can we upgrade to hard drive? I did get the Tablo but didn't yet paid for the life time schedule sub, do you think it's worth switching for me money is not part of the question but in terms of usability features. Sounds like it doesn't work with multiple tv and sorta is like a fire tv stick with a built-in tuner?
I like this particular tuner because it has all the popular streaming services but mostly because of its size. I like that it's bigger than all the other tuners and would look good in my home theater rack. All the other tuners available are too small and light. I have an old discontinued Samsung tuner that atleast had enough weight to compensate for cable stress and would sit securely in one place. It stopped working this year. I don't want any of the DVR functions such as rewind, recording or channel skip. I simply want a well designed tuner with the streaming service apps included. The Tivo seems like the best choice. I know this is an old video and the present model requires a large one time payment or monthly subscription. I also am aware that Tivo is not likely to support the DVR function much longer. I'm not sure of Channel Masters affiliation with Tivo. Is Channel Master just a licensed dealer? Is it possible that Tivo continues to let Channel Master sale and distribute this tuner without the DVR function support in the future? Is it possible that this tuner will someday be available without the internal DVR hardware and functions included? (That would be ideal for me) I'm planning on buying a 4K UHD monitor to use as a tv also. I don't want a smart tv in my house with Alexa or Google or any other internet based abilities. I need a separate tuner with video streamer.
I’ve got a Philip’s over the air DVR I bought in 2007 when my VCR finally conked out. It only records in 480p, so I’d be interested in this if it’s ATSC 3.0 compatible. Don’t want to buy this and have to upgrade in a couple of years. Great video.
@@AntennaMan Wow! Thank you! I only answer those questions that I have adequate knowledge on. Sorry to hijack this comment section, but it was kind of fun sharing my knowledge of these units with others. Thank you for the compliment!
Just got a Tivo Edge w/ all in from Channel Master. It is much different from Channel Master's DVR+, which we like, but, they dropped the on-line guide update. The guide on the Tivo Edge seems much more complete. Just going through the "learning curve" as to it's operation. One thing though . . . when you're watching a program, and punch in a channel number to jump to, sometimes it jumps to the RF channel, and not the virtual channel. Does anyone have thoughts on this ? Thanks, Bob
I've had Tivo since 2003. I can't take cable anymore, all that money for NOTHING to watch. I wanted to keep Tivo, but with 2 tuners, I'm not sure the Tivo Minis will work for my other TVs. Tivo's website says you need a 4 tuner Tivo if you want to use Minis. So after almost 20 years, goodbye Tivo. I went with a 4 tuner Tablo that is on my home network and runs on an app on Firestick, all wireless. It's a bit to get use to, but I'm saving money and I can kick Comcast out for good.
No monthly payments is nice, but that's the price of a refurbished midrange TV. Very expensive for what it is, plenty of people's brand new TVs cost less than this tuner. You could either buy this or buy a used TV that's probably better than your friends' TV.
We have a Tivo Edge and have enjoyed it's features. But we moved and I am confused about how channels are setup. All of our old channels appear, even though they do not work. Running a channel scan adds new channels, but the non working channels also appear in the guide.
I purchased a TiVo edge off the air about a year ago. I usually get 40 off the air channels. When I connected the Edge I was down to 7 channels. After trouble shooting I called customer support. They explained that because the TIVO has two tuners whatever the signal strength was going into the TIVo it was cut in half by the TiVo. Nowhere in the advertising does it tell you only the strongest strength channels can be used by the TiVo. They suggested I get a new antenna and amplifier and the try the TiVo again. So beware. If you are not in the strongest signal area for a channel the TiVo will not be useful. I returned mine to the store.
My 4 tuner Bolt gets the same signal strength over its 4 tuners as done any other tuner in my house equally well. The signal is definitely not weakened over the multiple tuners in the TiVo. In fact, I'm always a little overboard in most things and have 2 TiVo Bolts running in the same room (long story) with 8 tuners running in that room. The signal quality over the 8 tuners in one room versus other tuners in my home all have the same signal strength, no degradation whatsoever.
I have a Tivo Edge Antenna DVR attached to a onn. Indoor Antenna Anplifier on a 15’ RG59 cable to a onn. Outdoor Antenna Amplifier that is on a 20' RG59 to a Clearstream 2V antenna on my roof. The Tivo shows no antenna signal. I attached the same antenna cable to a RCA Digital TV Converter and it shows a 52% cable strength. Would you suggest a different antenna, amplifier or both to get the 80% to 90% signal strength for the Tivo Edge to work. @@AntennaMan
Thanks for the review - I have a better practice question about connecting it to my setup. Do I run my coax to the Tivo, then connect HDMI to my TV, or split my coax, then connect the Tivo to the TV with HDMI and keep my TV antenna connection?
@1:24 "While the Tivo does require internet access for apps and guide information, ..it isn't relying on the connection for live tv and recordings" In reading up on the product details on line, it IS saying that it MUST be connected to the internet to work. The bad, sad, news, what they ALL want folks, is our DATA. Everything now is listening to, and watching us continually, micro analyzing our privacy, down to dust, and it NEEDS TO BE STOPPED.
@@AntennaMan Perhaps you would like to expand on if the unit can actually be unplugged from the internet while "it isn't relying on the connection for live tv and recordings" and still work. After all, why does it need to be connected during that time. If you don't think you are being spied upon, and data collected today, unwillingly, you are quite naive. No tin foil hats or green here. You are forgiven.
@@douglassmith2055 You could unplug the ethernet during the day, but it must update the guide information during the night, and there is some information shared for DVR ratings purposes and suggested recordings purposes. TiVo doesn't sell your personal information. (I am not paid by nor employed by TiVo, just a consumer).
looking for same info, just the ability to stream OTA to 6 tvs instead of having to run cable to each would be a game changer for me. New flooring and the wife wants no cables coming through. Everything else we do is streaming so ability to stream to each TV with an app would be big
Every time I want to watch the Tivo Edge I need to switch the input on the TV (Does not auto switch like when you turn a Roku Stick on). There is no 2 week browsing over all TV shows, movies, and or sports like there is on Tablo or Plex. You can only pick from a list of set Apps on there list, which consist of 20 some. Does not replace Roku stick, where you can search for and install almost any app. I found it a bit of a disappointment for the price. The fact you have to pay out an additional 200 for a box for each additional TV in your house. They need to make an app so you don't have to shell out 200 for additional TV in your house. There is also one advertisement on each pages of the TV Guide. If they fix those five complaints, I would rate it the best overall device. Not sure why you failed to mention any of this in your review.
I'm using a Tivo Bolt for over the air TV watching and recording and have had it for over a year. It's great. Mine has 4 built-in tuners instead of 2. To get the guide it will cost $75 a year - definitely worth it. Mine scans for area channels and displays extras I can't receive, but I can just uncheck those, as shown in the video. Also, not all programs have the skip option - fast forward works great in that case. There is now an option to automatically use the skip function without having to use the remote each time. Tivo is a great alternative to cable and is worth every penny. Just be sure you use a good antenna.
I have been using the Amazon Recast DVR for a year now and for the most part has been working fine with Fire TV Cube. I also have a couple other TV's in the house that all have Firesticks that are seldom used. My problem is the Recast will not always record TV shows from ABC at 10:35pm. It's always been hit and miss. It records local channel ABC about 5% of the time and CBS about 90% of the time. Already been down that long road with tech support at Amazon and Channel Master. The whole system has been thru completely reset and antenna has been aligned but no one has figure out why CBS & ABC skips records. Anyway I'm ready to move forward, maybe buying another Recast box may fix the problem w=but my real question is should I go with the Table or the Tivo system. Will both of them work with my existing fore cube and fire sticks?
Wow, this is awesome. I have an old TiVo for antenna, but it is old, and I do not have an antenna anymore as our HOA does not allow them. Is there a new style of antenna I can use and make this all work? I currently use cable, but I want to cut the cord.
By Federal law, your HOA is not allowed to prohibit a TV antenna. They may place restrictions on its location, and they may require you to submit an application, but they may not prohibit it outright. Check your HOA rules; it's buried in there somewhere.
Does the TiVo let you manually input the channel number of any given to TV channel? Scott TVs don't let you do this because they're not designed for over the air Smart TVs are designed for well you know streaming the same thing little tiny streaming boxes that who will companions to regular TVs back then.

Thanks for the review. Currently a TiVo cable user since 2001 and cutting the cord. This makes it easy.
OTA TiVos are the best. I have a Roamio that records when I am at work. I love classic westerns and comedies. All the best shows for free and no cable bill. It's the only way to enjoy antenna TV.
Were you able to upgrade your Roamio to the new TE4 and get Tivo+?
Being unable to fast forward live TV would make it a lot easier to win at sports betting!
My wife thought that. She also thought there are phone back up chargers that don't require recharging themselves. She's a dumb blonde.
I'm still using a DirecTV THR22 TiVo alongside my TiVo Bolt OTA, so I've got a lot to choose from.
LOL!!!
If you pause it, you can fast forward but live is... live, so
I had been watching for a Tivo for several years to replace my Channel Master DVR+.
Very happy I purchased this (through the link)
Also, thanks for putting me on to WOWY!
A four tuner Tivo Roamio for OTA with LIfetime service
is an ideal unit to buy just for DVR.
U got usa channel on it?
I just ordered the TiVo. It was $350. $100 more than 15 years ago. TiVo has always been outstanding. Thank you for this tip. Your video sold my Wife.
Time travel does not exist...yet. I like how you think Tyler.
I've been thinking about buying this unit for a while. The $50.00 discount coupon pushed me over the edge (so to speak). Thanks!
TiVO use to be great but it sucks now with pre-roll ads and buggy software. BEWARE.
@@albertwiersch9852 Buggy software seems to be an established fact of life in the broadcast TV business. In particular, the recording of programs and series hardly ever works correctly. I bought my TiVo Bolt OTA/Cable several years ago and got the lifetime service. So glad I did. It made it simple to switch from cable to ota because it works with either one. I'm glad I had to foresight to not buy the cable only model.

I have the TiVo Bolt OTA/Cable and it came a few years before the Edge, but has 4 tuners instead of 2. So you can record four programs at once.
I have a Tablo Dual. Auto commercial skip, channel scan and WiFi connection. It's just better.
There is a TiVo Edge model with 4 tuners and 1TB drive available, it just costs more money.
I bought a TiVo edge based on this video and have been very pleased with the way it works. Thanks Tyler good recommendation
I love your channel, thank you!
I bought a TIVO Bolt OTA 1 TB with lifetime service about 2 years ago. Looks to be about the same as this. It’s been a good device for my household.
Thanks for saying that, Ronnie. I have the Roamio. Appears to be all the same features and capabilities too. I don't think I can justify buying a new one without any noteworthy upgrades.
I jumped on this deal. Thanks, Tyler!
This cutting the cord is added up ;)
I bought mine from channel master because of this video and it is awesome.
I've never see a Tivo with 3 TB of memory. How did you get that?
@@g9-anne513 I ordered the proper PMR (parallel magnetic recording) Western Digital internal hard drive from WeaKnees (authorized TiVo retailer/servicer). The drive cost more than the TiVo did. They sell all kinds of upgrades for TiVo units.

Yeah, it kills me when a company comes out with a new model of something and it is actually a downgrade. The Bolt OTA has 4 tuners and the Edge only has 2. They probably saved $2 by leaving the other 2 out.

I think I'm going back to TiVo. I tried so hard with all the smart stuff like Google TV and I just miss it. Old school is way better for TV.
Thanks!

I would get this if it had 4 tuners like my OTA Roamio has. I wonder why Tivo stopped offering a 4 tuner model.

Great easy to understand review as always! Thanks so much!
Pro tip#18
Install a 2 way splitter.
@@JRobert111111 Pressure? There should be a class action lawsuit if they DON'T.
The current model should be good for at least ten years
The odd shape (like a stack of two books, one hangin' over) is messin' w/ my OCD a bit.
Then you might like the Bolt better which is curved and looks "bent". :)
I absolutely agree. I really dislike the weird configuration of the boxes for Edge and Bolt. I'm considering switching to something, like Amazon Fire TV Recast, that is not unpleasantly irregular to look at and place.
@@g9-anne513 The refinement, performance and functionality on the Edge and Bolt far outweigh the shape.
Will Tivo allow me to stream recordings on other devices such as iPhone iPads, laptops?
Kind of liking this device. Has my four favorite apps.
This makes for a perfect replacement for my paid satellite service (Dish), when I eventually end up moving somewhere with OTA reception

@@chrisscifilink77 I bought my mom a Tablo OTA DVR for Christmas and it turned out the app wasn't in the Tizen App Store so I bought a Tivo Stream 4K at Walmart to set it up.
The two stream capable DVR must be a be a recent sub model. I recall that the over the air model was four stream capable.
The roamio ota has 4 tuners, but frankly, they're not very good tuners and you'll have a lot of trouble using it with weaker DTV signals. I know, I have one.
You're right. The 2 tuner Edge is a scaled down, less expensive option than the 4 tuner 1TB unit.
Did you have to purchase a "special" HD from TiVo, or will any old HD work now?
@@g9-anne513 Just saw your question. Tivo HD is the name of the device. I purchased one at a thrift store which just happened to have an active subscription. That allows monthly guide and recording of selected programs and subscriptions. i found info on how to upgrade the included 160 GB Hard drive to 1TB. Hope that answers your question.
Very interesting, informative, and educational. Well done presentation. This TEVO sounds and seems like a excellent product. Thank You For Your Time and Strong Efforts.
I installed the Stremium app DVR services $5 a month and it records better than my $250 Recast DVR.
I wish TiVo done this several years ago for OTA, Tablo already beat them to the punch, that TiVo Edge is a bit overkill for streaming features and the price for things I already have with my other streaming devices. I don’t record that much new shows anymore, my area lost some channels due to mergers.
Tablo , hiked up the the connection is real bad , I gave up on it .
Support is terrible now.
Always loved ui on tvio sound is amazing too
Thanks for the Tivo Edge review.
Coupon code is Antenna Man!
@@AntennaMan You sneaky devil!
If I watched a ton of network TV or PBS, this would be worth a look.
Are you able to watch a recorded program and record two other programs at the same time?
The commercial skip can be set to automatic. No button press needed. My Roamio is set that way.
~Frank
I don't like the HDHR app so I only use it to record shows and I use the Live Channels app to watch TV.
Can you save recordings to Blu-ray or external Hard Drive. If I like a recording I would like to to able to keep it.
Thank you so much for all the review and information. Blessings 😇
I'll wait till this new tuner format ATSC 3.0 comes on line then I'll purchase one.
That going to be a long wait
Yeah you're going to wait a very long time - likely years. We are still in the very early stages of the launch of NextGen TV.
@@JRobert111111 Thank you!
Thanks for the video. How to we increase the storage capacity?
What do you recommend as the best over the air dvr with no monthly fees in 2023? Thanks!
Probably the Tablo.
What if you have your antenna hooked to an 8 port power splitter? Will a Tablo or TiVo Edge be the be the better option?
This looks better than the Tablo DVR, can we upgrade to hard drive? I did get the Tablo but didn't yet paid for the life time schedule sub, do you think it's worth switching for me money is not part of the question but in terms of usability features. Sounds like it doesn't work with multiple tv and sorta is like a fire tv stick with a built-in tuner?
Yes, you can replace the hard drive with an external unit (much easier to get 3.5" PMR drives). www.weaknees.com/tivo-edge-kits.php
(That would be ideal for me)
I'm planning on buying a 4K UHD monitor to use as a tv also. I don't want a smart tv in my house with Alexa or Google or any other internet based abilities. I need a separate tuner with video streamer.
I have one a Tivo Edge though its the cable version. I use it for Xfinity with a cable card. Which I get free
I’ve got a Philip’s over the air DVR I bought in 2007 when my VCR finally conked out. It only records in 480p, so I’d be interested in this if it’s ATSC 3.0 compatible. Don’t want to buy this and have to upgrade in a couple of years. Great video.
Interesting! Yeah, at some point you will need a new DVR when ATSC 3.0 replaces 1.0. I don't see that happening for another ten years.
What does this have to hook up to or does it just get the channels
You'll need a proper antenna for this to work as with any other OTA tuner.
JRobert11111 you've been added as a moderator to my channel. Thanks for helping me with the comments.
Thanks, Bob
WE ALL KNOW 4 Tuners are needed to be practical and at least 1 TB of hard drive space. I have 4 tuners and 2TB myself.
2 tuners and 500 GB of hard drive space are enough for me.
Yes, I've got the Bolt OTA with 4 tuners and a 3TB hard drive, and I love the thing!
Weird, the tuner sensitivity in my Tivo was good. You might have had a bad unit.
Lay off the weed. Actually, sounds like you had some good stuff. Can I have some?
Can you add a hard drive for more storage ?
Question: can you setup your tivo edge at your home then take the setup tivo edge to a friend's home without having any internet connection?
I would not recommend the Tivo edge for this purpose. It would be better to use a Tablo or Air Tv.
Can you steam to your Amazon Fire Stick to multiple sets with this like a Tablo Quad or is this just a fancy converter box?
looking for same info, just the ability to stream OTA to 6 tvs instead of having to run cable to each would be a game changer for me. New flooring and the wife wants no cables coming through. Everything else we do is streaming so ability to stream to each TV with an app would be big
This isn't a network tuner like AirTV, HDHomeRun, or Tablo.
Your reviews are great, is this still a great recommendation and is the guide still free? Thanks again! 👍🏻
I no longer recommend this unit.
Great thank you!
Yes, the inconsistent SKIP feature can be annoying. You can report missing or incorrect SKIP here: survey.confirmit.com/wix/1/p3075425841.aspx
what is the all in for the tivo edge ?
All-in service is basically a lifetime subscription with no monthly fee
A guy on another ch said the skip feature is useless. As he noted of 20 recordings only 3 support it denoted by word skip. What am I missing here?
