When Tyler was showing Seinfeld as his example on how to change channels, the time was 12:16 AM. Wow! Tyler was up late in order to post a free video regarding a free service. Thank you so much Tyler for spending HOURS on something that will benefit us with more free OTA TV. Now that’s what I call quality content. Keep up the good work, Tyler!
This really is the way to go imo. My story: I bought a Tablo 2-tuner DVR about 3 years ago and I was so frustrated with my experience (channels dropping, fuzzy, inconsistent image) I disconnected it and put it in a draw, forgotten. I went back to the 'cord', paying $40/mo for TH-camTV. Then I came across this channel late one night. I have watched every one of the videos. They are informative and well done. I started to realize that it was the antenna, a piece of crap Mohu Curve 30. I decided to go out and buy a new outdoor antenna, the Clearstream 2Max. Lets just say that my performance went from a C- to an A+. Thank you for providing this info. I have cut the "cord" again, permanently this time! We all need to cut the cord and give these multinational companies the boot.
I am glad to see you solved the problem. I personal do not like my tablo because I have to rely on wifi through my firestick. I would rather have tablo connect directly into my TV through an a cable. I am thinking about Tivo.
I just cut the cord last week & bought this. It's WONDERFUL. I live 2 miles from the broadcast station so my reception is superb. I have 2 tvs and bought 3 $9.99 rabbit ear antennas. I used one for the Tablo and the other 2 actually wired into the tv's coaxial outlet. Now the reception is even better through the tv but not bad through the Tablo. I also had the Tablo app on one of my tv's & the reception thru the tv app is better than thru the roku Tablo app. So to save on bandwidth and to actually watch my locals while 2 programs were recording, I just use the antenna directly when watching live. I added a 256 gb flash drive that I got for $16.99 & it works flawlessly. The only downside is that the Tablo wouldn't recognize my Wifi and once I got it to recognize it, it wouldn't hold the signal & I had it right next to the route so I just hardwired thru the Ethernet cable and alls fine. Do you think that the problem is with the unit itself or my router? I also got Philo for $20.00 a mth & I get mostly all the cable channels with unlimited dvr. So I've gone from $115.00 a month for tv to $20.00 but the caveat is my internet went from $30.00 a mth unlimited to $75.00 a mth for 1TB which is cutting into my savings. I'm calling the competitor tomorrow and see about switching so I can get the introductory price for $35.00 for a year. They aren't going to let us get away with taking their monies away from the TV dept and using their bandwidth for the same price as the package. Thank you so much because I ran across your video by accident and you're the reason for the cut. I never thought about an OTA antenna and knew NOTHING about Tablo until you came into my life. Believe it or not, I bought this thing to record my Judge Judy's. LOL I couldnt find her on any streaming app so I had to buy this to collect her shows. I work out to her every morning and evening. I couldnt lose my Judy's. I had over 50 on my dvr before I returned it to AT&T.
I’m not tech savvy at all and have been going nuts trying to figure out the different models, hookups, etc. This review was so genuinely helpful. Thank you so much for taking the time to help people like me. I also laughed when you said we’ll see how this video ages in a year because it’s just over a year later right now!
I have a Quad Tablo for about a year now and we love it. It works great on our TV's in the house and as an over the air DVR. I like the guide and its easy enough for other less tech savvy people in my house to operate. If I had any minor complaint, it would be that 6 seconds it takes for the channel to appear and my is hard wired. But the picture is great and I have no regrets for buying a Tablo. We basically just use the guide and select a show, but it was nice to watch this video as a review for device setting options and for the other ways to find specific shows to watch.
TiVo lifetime subscription applies only to a specific unit, and now TiVo has snuck in pre roll ads ahead of your recordings. You pay for their service, you pay for their hardware, and still they try to sneak commercials in on you, on top of the existing commercials in your programs. If my TiVo quits, I’ll be sure to look into Tablo. Thanks for a thorough, straightforward, and honest review Tyler. Honestly I just don’t watch much OTA programming anymore. Had no idea Maury was still on. Wow
I have had my Tablo, roku and outside antenna for 2 years now. I also got the $150 Tablo lifetime subscription. It works great for me and I am happy to be rid of cable and happy with this setup.
@@AntennaMan The guide should free. I still like me Recast and I do not see the weak signal message any longer too. The full 2 week accurate guide I am impressed with. I just do not like forking out my money, just to have to pay a chunk more just to get a guide. That is the reason the Tablo or Tivo has not interested me.
I have had tablo for maybe 6 yrs now. Fantastic device. You can even open ports on router and watch recordings an live tv on your cell phone while away from the house. Only problem I have had with tablo is lightening has has arched over from hitting two nearby trees and taken them out. My advice in chosing one get the 4 tuner version you will glad you did. Few extra bucks but look what you are saving without cable!
I just may have to do this. We live in a major county in NY [fortunately 400 miles from NYC}. FOX and PBS {which we pay for in our taxes} are unavailable in this electromagnetic black hole. In fact of the 25+ stations we should get according to TV FOOL, we only receive 8. Even the NBC affiliate which is only 10 miles away, breaks up when it rains and my antenna, while in the attic, is 30' above ground. Possibly a better antenna capable of being outside and omni directional could help but using Tablo remotely might be better. Open to suggestions on the best omni-directional antenna.
@@AntennaMan if you set this up in another market, do you have to leave the box at that friends house? Or, do you bring it back to your house after setup?
Thank you for all your videos. I had my antenna installed professionally today! I have the Tablo Quatro (and got a 5TB Seagate external hard drive). I took the cable boxes back to the office and got my bill cut over $50/mo 🥳 I picked up 2 Roku devices for my 'dumb' TVs so all my fixed costs are done until ASTC 3.0 comes to Cincinnati. (Strike that, I still have to pay the $150 lifetime subscription). I subscribed to Sling TV (blue) and plan to rotate Netflix, Disney+ and HBO Max for extra premium content. Keep up the good work!
That's the most excited I've seen you, Tyler. Seriously I've done a bunch of research myself and totally agree with you... and everyone else. As Jeff (Simpson comic book guy) would say, " Best episode ever"
Hey Tyler, the countdown is NOW ON !! Less than 10,000 subscribers are required for you to hit 100,000 and for you to get your plaque from TH-cam. I hope you will show it to us. Who would have "thunk it." In celebration you should paint the cupboard red beside you. Good luck with your channel growth in the coming weeks. Me and my three over-the-air channels have been with you since you were under 1,000 subscribers.
You do great videos! I watch them all… I have had a Tablo quad for quite some time now and absolutely love it. I added a Samsung 2 TB hard drive end it stores more than I could ever watch
@@JT-lq4yd I wouldn't try that unless you are moving it to an new Table device. The first thing my Tablo did was to format my hard drive and give me a warning that this would wipe all the content on the drive completely.
@@joeljentelson3810 Yes, some electronic products that can use some type of external storage will format said storage to something they are programed to work with, i.e. FAT, exFAT, etc. Let's say that once the hard drive is formatted, is it recognized by a PC? Are the video files recorded for example as Avi, MPG1, MP4 or a proprietary format?
I am very impressed... I have been looking for something like an over the air external tuner, because my TV's tuner might be starting to go on the fritz - it's a 2014 Sony. I DID order the Mediasonic tuner box, but THIS "Tablo" gadget is amazing! Anyway, I wanted to tell you I went to grade school with your father.... 1st grade. I would say your father did a good job ;-)))))) I'll look into this "Tablo" a little more. Very, very cool. This would actually be an answer to wanting to watch Roku that I just got, and be able to watch it in other TVs in my house. This is just wild. I dig that you show how this stuff works and what it looks like. Hope your dad is proud of you, because I sure would be...
Ive had the quad tablo for almost a year now with a 500gb internal drive and hardwired to my gb switch... it has not failed me once. Ended up liking the premium guide and commercial skip enuf to keep it... you are correct in that its pretty much my main go-to TV viewing. The really cool part is lots and lots of old shows that come on at 2am are now part of my main tv routine. You forgot to mention too that as your HDD gets full the Tablo will delete the oldest recordings in order to keep recording your scheduled events. Its pretty cool. There is a very active Tablo online community too for tips and tricks. I ended up buying a usb powered muffin fan and put under my tablo box to assist in keeping it cooler (got really hot)... silent $7 fix. Tips from the community....
I would always recommend for those who want too get into this to get a quad tuner system, whether it's a Tablo, HDHomerun, Fire Re-cast, etc simply so you won't run into a situation where you've set it too record 2 shows simultaneously but you happen too be watching TV live so now one of the tuners is being utilized for that and you're not getting one of your shows recorded (depending on how you've prioritized the shows). I dvr a ton of evening OTA programming and with a quad tuner I've never once ran into that issue. I have quite a few simultaneous dual recordings scheduled and one single instance of 3 shows recording at once over the course of a week. Point is I always have a spare tuner available to watch live TV and don't have to worry about it whereas back when I used to only have a dual tuner I was running into that situation all the time.
As for paying for guides I would disagree with most here and say it's totally NOT worth it. You're going too get a month out (or whatever) anyways....which is always going too be current and free of charge. Programming times can and will change...so paying for something that gives you a year out is pointless and/or who's sitting there scheduling recording's for a year? Just that task in and of itself is not even feasible and is pointless too have "theoretical" scheduling. Just my 2 cents. Also pro tip....say there's some brand new show coming on in 3 months you want too schedule. Typically with the free included (internet/ota meta data) guides you can still just search the given show...poof there it is.... and set it too record regardless if it isn't physically on your guide yet. YMMV but I found paying for the official "TV guide" to be completely unnecessary.
I still love my TiVo and have it connected to 3 TV's in the house. Commercial skip has been there for years. Mine is cable connected, however the previous TiVo was OTA and worked beautifully. Tablo looks like a good alternative.
I’m debating between the table and TiVo through channelmaster but was wondering how you connect your TiVo to multiple TVs? Is it hard wired, or can you hardwire one TV and stream to the others?
As an owner of the older Dual tuner Tablo and now a Tablo Quad the auto commercial skip is hit or miss. Sometimes it works great and other times not. So in my honest opinion it is not worth the extra $5 bucks a month. Hopefully Tablo can improve this feature down the road. I tried the service for the trial period and man it the feature is great when it works. Also I think Tablo is the best way to go for OTA DVRs for entire house coverage.
Love your videos, I have used a Tablo for over two years with the subscription . Good recorder but they now charge extra for the commercial skip. Tried the commercial skip for a while but found it to be nearly useless and don’t work at all on some programs. If you are computer savvy Next DVR is a much better option. It also shows thumbnails when timeshifting.
I love the fact that it records when show starts & stops recording when show ends. My last cable DVR, was updated so it would only record when the show came on BUT it would often start recording AFTER the show started and STOP before the show ended. Previous DVR, I could set the timer for recording so I would set it to start couple minutes before show started, and stop couple minutes AFTER the show was over in order to get the entire show.
This is a wonderful video! I have a terrace outside my condo with an electrical plug. I can put an antenna out there and plug it into the tablo and then use my roku sticks to watch tv via Wi-Fi. I don't have to run wires outside or through the house. I can put the tablo in a plastic box with a hard drive to record programs as well.
Hi Ronald - Tablo isn't designed to be outside with major temperature swings. I'll bet Tyler has a recommendation for a flat coax connector that would allow you to place the antenna on your balcony and keep the Tablo indoors.
This is a amazing device and thanks for the review. I just got it today and it solves lots of issues. First off the tuner is superb, before upgrading your Antenna try one of these. Second it's wife friendly, no need to change your inputs or audio outputs if you are on the Home theater system, it's just another app on your roku or firestick. I wish it had native signal pass through but for the price what it does is great.
I know after 3 months I'm still very impressed with this thing. You know I just use it everyday and I like the fact that I can have the tablo app on my PCS or laptops. Android phones. Even the phones that I'm not using except as a tablet. But I did get the service where you can get the 14-day guide and watch it outside the home. I think hard wiring might help some things out. But definitely it works even when you use the web interface. And I've watched it on my raspberry pi for. In that case you have to use the web interface on their website. But it's very friendly to use even raspberry pi for handles it like a breeze so basically I am really impressed with this thing. And I don't have to go out and buy all these TV sets just so I can watch tv. Anything can be an over there TV when you have a tableau period and you can have up to eight terabyte hard drive hooked up to it. That's if you're a real serious TV hound. Thank you antenna man for promoting this device and telling us all about it. I'm one happy customer.
As someone who works in TV I want to point out that if people keep skipping commercials over-the-air broadcasting will not continue. Commercials is how we keep the lights on.
Maybe tell the folks who produce commercials to put more intelligence into them. There's a lot of commercials that treat the public like they're blithering idiots. Then the technical issues (mostly of the past) where you're enjoying a show or a movie on tv, and suddenly it's commercial time, and the commercial comes on a blows everyone in the room away with loud audio. Yeah, we know that commercials are the revenue side of television, but it's the negatives that turned viewers off of it. As someone who trained in television in the mid 80s, we learned how to set luminescence and audio levels at time of production. Some things can even be altered in post-production, but the writers and the producers are responsible for the content in the first place. Lastly, see what you can do about repetition. Nothing is worse than seeing the same commercial over and over (mostly on late-night television). I've even seen the same commercial repeated in the same block for crying out loud. That's poor programming, or maybe automation that isn't quite perfected.
Pretty sure the TV stations don't know who is skipping the commercials. Besides, the Government dictates that they must broadcast OTA so they just can't stop doing it.
It's also worth pointing out that the tablo quad also has an internal SATA connector for an internal hard drive. This means you not only don't need yet another chord running around, but the drive won't be sitting there waiting to be knocked over and corrupted. It'll be permanently (and more importantly, SAFELY) installed inside the device. also, if you want faster response times, the best thing you can do is to use an SSD instead of a mechanical HDD. Hard drives are slow. Solid state drives (even cheap ones, usually.) are MUCH faster.
Great review. We have had one since January and actually prefer the free way to set up recording. I did have to hard wire it to the modem for it to work for the initial setup. It does work great with Roku , with Amazon fire stick--not so well . One thing you can correct me on if I am wrong-- I decided to buy the duo because I heard the quad had the equivalent of 4 splitters built-in instead of the 2 for the duo, so to maximize signal reception, I went with the duo. Keep up the great job.
I ordered this on Amazon (November 2022). I initially was impressed but I learned a couple of hours in (after tweeking the antenna and scanning) that there no longer was a life time subscription option. Also in my particular Mesh WI-FI 6 home, it streamed poorly and buffered every couple of minutes. I'm returning it. I'm only commenting because Tablo changed their offering and you might want to update your video. I'm returning it because of the buffering and without the lifetime offering it's no longer an attractive choice for me.
Great review - love the channel too, Tyler. I am also a major fan of the Tablo. It just works! And well!! OK, one thing I wish were different, when watching live TV it can take 6+ seconds to change channels. The check box to speed up channel change seems to do nothing. Regardless - I love this product.
Well made and thorough review, Tyler. I have this same device and I use it every day. Just one thing. The channel skipping doesn't work for live newscasts that are recorded. Not sure why. Also, when surround sound is activated, watching a DVR show from a phone or tablet with Bluetooth headphones doesn't work. It seems the Tablo app does not transcode 5.1 audio into stereo for headphones. I had to switch off the surround sound so I can listen to shows privately with headphones.
I've used the original Tablo 2-tuner version for 3+ years. My experience has been that the hardware and design quality of early units was poor. My first one apparently overheated and destroyed itself because of very poor air circulation inherent in the design (it even fried a switch that I had its ethernet plugged into.) I replaced it with the same kind of unit but I leave it upside down so the bottom plate stays cooler, and it has survived longer. Otherwise, Tablo is a reasonably-priced, high performing solution.
Also, I just purchased a Televes Mast Head Amplifier. I have to go into my attic and attach this and see if it works on my VHF yagi-style Winegard antenna that I installed myself in my attic around 10 years ago when I was a little younger and more physically fit... I am also on Facebook, and a friend of mine joined me to this OTA group, and they mentioned this amplifier and they liked it better than the Channel Master Titan 2 amps. (I have a Blonder Tongue one, and it has lasted longer than a couple of faulty Channel Master amps). But I want to see how this one is. Some of the stations are not coming in as well as they used to be, and I'm just curious to see how this will be. Someone said in the Facebook group that it has a lot of "interference" or "noise". So I thought I would check this out. I got to go try it out, now that it is cooler in my attic to see if it even WORKS. I don't want to go past any "return window"....
I would like to know more about setting Taboo up in another town. Can someone explain to me how this works and how many tv's I can use simultaneously if the device is in a home 100 .miles away? Thanks!
If you hit OK while over the channel icon instead of the program it will automatically play the live content on that channel without having to choose the option to record or watch.
I zeroed in on your 'choose the option to record or watch'. If I record a channel and then decide to watch the same channel, am I using two of Tablo's tuners to do that?
Quick Tablo tip for everyone... If you hit PLAY vs. OK on most remotes when on the Live TV grid or your recordings, it will start playback immediately versus taking you to the secondary screen!
I've been looking at these for a while. This IS a great tuner, BUT it has no HDMI output for stand alone use without the internet. When they put a HDMI output on it I'll consider buying one. Thanks for the review.
y an n. If your internet is down, but your home network is up(router, power still on) my roku will allow me to view my recordings from my tablo. Yes, no outside connection is 'there(the guide, new content)', but my roku still sees my home 'network', and my tablo is still 'connected', so I can play Ota recordings.
Hi Tyler. I had an idea you may want to consider for a new video. I have tv stations with weak signals that are in opposite directions. I bought two different directional antennas and point them in opposite direction. My issue is how to combine the signals. Well after watching your video I know I can not just connect them to a splitter because the interference cancels out the combined signal on some channels. So I connected one to a Tablo, and the other I run to my splitter in the basement that goes to every TV. So now I can watch some channels using the Tablo, and other channels using the TV cable. I could have also used a Amazon Recast and a Tablo. What would be nice is if I could use two Tablos and Tablo support combining the signals in one feed where I could choose which tablo to use for the channel. Anyway I thought I would share my trick to combine two antennas with you and you may want to share this with your viewers.
Just ordered mine. Ill replace my homeworks ota recorder that you recomended. I hated that piece of shit, never recorded anything with sucess. this one was 5x the price but at least it will be quality. By the way, some of us have home theatres, please remember to mention the resolution and dolby audio capability. its a major poimt for some of us. resolution is standard hd 1080p and audio is dolby 5.1. not the best but acceptable. Keep up the good work antenna man 👍
Seems the Tablo works with an antenna for OTA programming, but one also needs a smart phone to talk to the Tablo, a network for the smart phone to access the internet (or maybe something via a computer, I don't know), some programming one gets over the internet and gives to the Tablo via the smart phone, and probably other things I missed. I have a DVDR with a DVD burner bought in 2003 that only needs the antenna and a converter box (to convert digital to analog and it also routes the channel I want to record into the DVDR). Also it needs blank DVDs. If there is a Tablo that can sense via the antenna all available channels and comes with a standard remote control, I'd be interested. I do like the idea of it recording onto a hard drive, perhaps in MP4 format; no more buying blank DVDs for me!
its app based system. u need an internet connection, and any device that uses/ downloads the tablo 'app'. plug the tablo into the antenna and the router. then download the app on ANYTHING u want to watch tv on. phone, tablet, Apple TV box, roku, smart tv, google play connected whatever.i have the app on my iPhone, iPad, bedroom roku, family rm Apple TV.
nice review... if i wasn't running a SageTV server i'd totally buy this up in 2 seconds! it will be interesting to see how the next digital transition of OTA TV ATSC 3.0 pans out..... lets hope we'll still have some sort of DVR with 3.0!!
This is a really great video showing the functionality 9f the Tablo. I really liked the way you showed us how to actually use it by going through the channels and recording setting. By any chance will you be making a similar video about the Homerun device? Thank you again for all that you do for us.

your "use #4" (2:01) didn't go into any detail. i bought your service to assess my available channels and the answer was "all are weak" - so i would like to explore your "setting up at a friends house and accessing over the internet" - is there a vid on this?
Thanks Tyler for a great review. Question: at 7:45 you mention that there's no thumbnail preview, but at 9:12 you show that there is a thumbnail preview. I don't understand the difference. Thanks.
Are you thinking about updating OTA device reviews. I am going through your videos and most are several months old which means they are most likely out of date. Thanks for your videos. Great help and info.
Hi Tyler, great video. But I am wondering how the quality of the picture is compared to a set top OTA DVR like the Tivo edge or bolt? For me I worried about loosing quality of the video. Or the speed to change channels. Any comment would be helpful as I'm looking to upgrade my old Channel Master DVR+
@@AntennaMan My next question is (if you don't mind) I am also looking at Recast, since i have a Fire TV box, which I have installed custom apps. Is this a better quality picture than Tablo? Thank you Tyler. I'm 5 years now as a cord cutter.
@@AntennaMan I am beginning to feel that way about tablo. one other question Tyler and I'll try not to bother you much more. Can one install apps on a tablo device such as example Kodi.
@@georgelaroche7955 no the Tablo doesn't connect to your TV. It's accessed by a streaming device like Roku or Firestick. You can install Kodi on one of them.
Re. Tablo Dual vs Quad: if you want to record more than 2 shows that are in the same time slot you will need a Quad. With the Dual you can record / watch only 2 shows simultaneously; with the quad, 4 shows simultaneously.
WoW this seems exactly like what I`m looking for. I wonder though if it can rewind and pause live TV. I`ll google that. Hope it works with a Samsung smart tv. If not I`ll get a Roku stick. Thanks for an excellent video presentation!
Good coverage, although I was looking forward to a demonstration of using Tablo to access OTA from a single antenna on two or more Roku devices in the house.
Hi , love your show I would love to cut the cord and be a ble to record from my superbox could you show me how to connect it to my lg tv that's 2 yrs old
You know, I bought the original TiVo OTA a while back. It has lifetime service for OTA channel data for free, and four tuners. I noticed the bolt OTA now charges for the guide service. They keep trying to get me to "upgrade" to the newer device, but I'm not buying!
Would love to know how to hardwire tablo. My whole house has Ethernet ports in each room. Currently IP coxaxial goes to modem and then modem to router. Then router to switch for all my rooms. Where does Tablo fit in here. Does it go in basement with all of these items or can it go in one of my rooms.
I grew up with commercials my whole life. Never had premium content (no commercials) without paying for it. If everyone stops watching commercials the providers will have to find another way to pay their bills.
My question is can you watch local channels. Channel 09/05/12/19.. And can you use your TV remote if you don't have a tablo remote. And does it work if you're in the basement of your house or apartment.
This can't connect directly to your TV but the Tablo HDMI below can: th-cam.com/video/z1aztiiIDlI/w-d-xo.html Do not use a thumb drive as it's not fast enough to handle the large video files sizes.
I bought the Tablo on your recommendation, and it was working flawlessly until recently. I bought it directly from Tablo and it is still under warranty, but they refuse to replace the unit. After spending many hours rebooting, Tablo , router, Roku. And still Tablo no longer connects. They told me it is my network. I borrowed someone else’s Tablo and it connected first try. I have a defective unit under warranty. So I like the product, but if it fails under the 12 month warranty don’t expect any help from Tablo. Very frustrating.
Tried the Tablo for the DVR capability but the tuner wouldn't bring in WTAE on the opposite side of Pittsburgh from me. Returned it and am using the HD Homerun that does pick it up with my Clearstream 4.
I like the all in one aspect of Tablo, but the downside is the time it take to start a live channel. With HDHomeRun + Channels app, it is almost instant. It had to do with Tablo wanting to encode the live channel but the Channels app showing it natively.
@@AntennaMan Most likely, BUT I have also read elsewhere that this is an issue regardless of wifi or wired. BTW, if you have the funds, get a mesh router and make sure you have one that provides a satellite unit which has Ethernet ports. That way, you can connect an antenna receiver (like Tablo) directly into the Ethernet port of a mesh network. I did that with my HDHomeRun. Works great.
Great Review!!! I have the Tablo Quad, and I love it, BUT Is there a way you can do a demo on how to set up the Tablo outside my service area (when I go on vacation). I would get the lifetime subscription but I cant figure out how to set it while Im away from my router.
Is there a way to schedule a recording by just specifying a date, time, and channel? Can this be done without a subscription? Can it be done more than one day in advance without a subscription?
Great video! Just subscribed. I just ordered this unit, and have a question on your option #4. Are you saying that I could take my Tablo to, say, Denver to set it up using their local channels and then take it back home to, say, Kansas City and use it to watch the Denver local channels? Thanks!
I got the newest one I hate it. It brings in a lot of channels but the thing just shuts down. I've got a good channel master antenna if I take it off the tabl0 and hook it to the back of my TV the channels come in and stay in. But I hook it up to the tablo it just drops it it happens too much for me. So I'm back to the old antenna.

Wow
I got a TH-cam ad right after the moment you demonstrated the Tablo's commercial skip feature 😆
I have had my Tablo, roku and outside antenna for 2 years now. I also got the $150 Tablo lifetime subscription. It works great for me and I am happy to be rid of cable and happy with this setup.
The subscription is totally worth it! I purchased the lifetime right away.
It's truly great.
Is the video quality the same as the over-the-air broadcast?
@@MrWoodhaven11421 you can choose from SD480 to HD1080-10Mbps,720@60fps
@@eastwoodrmc1995 Thank you
I have had tablo for maybe 6 yrs now.
Omg, that setting it up at someone else’s house and streaming is a god send for us, we get 4 channels over the air here. Thank you
Game changer
Yes that's one way you can use the Tablo.
@@pdab4372 You would leave the Tablo at your friend's house then access it over the internet on Firestick or Roku.
@@AntennaMan Thank you!
Are you able to move the recording out of the external hard drive for archiving?
@@JT-lq4yd I wouldn't try that unless you are moving it to an new Table device. The first thing my Tablo did was to format my hard drive and give me a warning that this would wipe all the content on the drive completely.
J T - There is user-written software that allows you to copy recordings to a networked PC. I use Tablo Ripper and there are other programs.
@@johnbriggs3460 Thanks for the tip.
Saves me $60 per month after cutting DeeerectTV Most of the stuff we watch is over the air or on Netflix, Redbox ect... This is great!
Yes Tablo is great.
OTA continues to get better and better!
I still have my t a b l o and I love it. I've had it coming up on two years.
We love our Tablo. Thanks Tyler for another super review
Best review on Tablo I've seen, thank you.
That's not how it works at all Jay
Just what I needed to hear, Tyler. I have wondered about the Tablo and now I know. Thanks.
Did you try hardwiring it to your modem by Ethernet? That may help.
@@AntennaMan Yes, it's hard wired.
Dennis Dugan Not if you’re watching what’s being recorded.
Quick Tablo tip for everyone... If you hit PLAY vs. OK on most remotes when on the Live TV grid or your recordings, it will start playback immediately versus taking you to the secondary screen!
Thanks so very much. I've been looking for my 88 year old aunt who wants to get local channels and cut the expensive streaming service.
The BEST advice yet ! 👍👍👍👍👍👍
As an item of note, you can stream to up to 6 devices, if you're watching recorded content.
I miss the days of videotape where you had a smooth fast forward/rewind. That's one thing digital has not replicated.
Laserdiscs (at least the CAV discs) were even smoother, without all the noise bands.
nice review... if i wasn't running a SageTV server i'd totally buy this up in 2 seconds! it will be interesting to see how the next digital transition of OTA TV ATSC 3.0 pans out..... lets hope we'll still have some sort of DVR with 3.0!!
IF ATSC 3.0 takes off. It's a voluntary transition that may suffer the same fate as ATSC 2.0 and ATSC M/H.
Great review Tyler!
This video was amazing thanks for showing us about this
Excellent review and nice humor. Thanks!
This is a really great video showing the functionality 9f the Tablo. I really liked the way you showed us how to actually use it by going through the channels and recording setting. By any chance will you be making a similar video about the Homerun device? Thank you again for all that you do for us.

How is this video out of date? This Tablo is still sold
I watch because you are so monotone. It is awesome
Tablo had advanced settings where you can keep the picture at a higher quality. If will still be a bit compressed but not as bad.
@@AntennaMan My next question is (if you don't mind) I am also looking at Recast, since i have a Fire TV box, which I have installed custom apps. Is this a better quality picture than Tablo? Thank you Tyler. I'm 5 years now as a cord cutter.

Hello Tyler, Curious if you have any plans to review the latest Tablo dvr that was recently released?
Good afternoon Tyler,
The new Tablo Dual HDMI is shipping December 1.
Will you be reviewing it?

WoW this seems exactly like what I`m looking for. I wonder though if it can rewind and pause live TV. I`ll google that. Hope it works with a Samsung smart tv. If not I`ll get a Roku stick. Thanks for an excellent video presentation!
Good coverage, although I was looking forward to a demonstration of using Tablo to access OTA from a single antenna on two or more Roku devices in the house.
I tried it - the Tablo is fine as long as your internet connection is decent.
Thank you for information on Tablo dual.
You can also set up on any pc or Mac, it will likely be a little faster and easier to setup on pc, laptop or mac.
I have the Tablo and cast it from my Android to Google Chromecast. I can't pause a recorded show in this set up. Otherwise I love it!
That might be a Chromecast issue. I have issues with Chromecast and TH-cam TV.
@@AntennaMan Perhaps it is.... I've contacted Tablo twice and under gun 3 firmware updates and still no fix
So you don't hook it to your TV to view? You have to have fire stick, roku, etc?
Correct. See video below: th-cam.com/video/ArHQeUqDT48/w-d-xo.html
Very good presentation. How do I connect this directly to my TV? Instead of connecting to a hard drive, can I connect this to a 1tb USB Thumb Drive?
This can't connect directly to your TV but the Tablo HDMI below can:
th-cam.com/video/z1aztiiIDlI/w-d-xo.html
Do not use a thumb drive as it's not fast enough to handle the large video files sizes.
Question … once you start watching a recorded show using the IPhone app… can u use your phone concurrently for other duties.. email, FB, texting etc?
Hi, Tyler. Thanks for all the great content. How would you rate the tuner on this device, compared to other OTA DVRs you’ve tested?
Can I use the coaxial from existing dish network for an ota antenna? Of course cancelling dish first
I used the direct tv cable. so maybe?
I bought the Tablo on your recommendation, and it was working flawlessly until recently. I bought it directly from Tablo and it is still under warranty, but they refuse to replace the unit. After spending many hours rebooting, Tablo , router, Roku. And still Tablo no longer connects. They told me it is my network. I borrowed someone else’s Tablo and it connected first try. I have a defective unit under warranty. So I like the product, but if it fails under the 12 month warranty don’t expect any help from Tablo. Very frustrating.
I’ve got the quad using Roku’s and hate the slow channel change times.
Tried the Tablo for the DVR capability but the tuner wouldn't bring in WTAE on the opposite side of Pittsburgh from me. Returned it and am using the HD Homerun that does pick it up with my Clearstream 4.
I got the cloner box which can record Firestick or Roku but trying to get help with TCL Roku TV. But going to have to need tablo to get for OTA.
I just saw that Tablo has discontinued the premium service. Can new customers still get the out of home streaming?
I like the all in one aspect of Tablo, but the downside is the time it take to start a live channel. With HDHomeRun + Channels app, it is almost instant. It had to do with Tablo wanting to encode the live channel but the Channels app showing it natively.
I was using the Tablo on wifi so that may have something to do with it.
Thank you nite owl, time shows 1:12 pm.
Great Review!!! I have the Tablo Quad, and I love it, BUT Is there a way you can do a demo on how to set up the Tablo outside my service area (when I go on vacation). I would get the lifetime subscription but I cant figure out how to set it while Im away from my router.
@Stanley Gustafson Thanks,,,, I was trying to use i on a roku device... BUT it looks like Roku is not supported for remote access.
Great vid. Will this work without internet? I dont mean without wifi, I mean without internet service???
Is there a way to schedule a recording by just specifying a date, time, and channel? Can this be done without a subscription? Can it be done more than one day in advance without a subscription?
This looks so easy! Too bad they couldn't have done this in the ol' VCR days!
Is the tuner is the Tablos a better tuner than in mid-level TVs?
Great video! Just subscribed. I just ordered this unit, and have a question on your option #4. Are you saying that I could take my Tablo to, say, Denver to set it up using their local channels and then take it back home to, say, Kansas City and use it to watch the Denver local channels? Thanks!
Yes, but you would need to pay for their subscription service in order to do so.
I'm still using Windows Media Center and HDHomeruns. Does Media Center recognize network broadcasts from this device?
I bought ours a few years ago, but now it won't connect and blue light keeps flashing no matter what I do. Any ideas on how to fix this?
Contact Tablo for support
I got the newest one I hate it. It brings in a lot of channels but the thing just shuts down. I've got a good channel master antenna if I take it off the tabl0 and hook it to the back of my TV the channels come in and stay in. But I hook it up to the tablo it just drops it it happens too much for me. So I'm back to the old antenna.
nice video however
present day signals 2020having issues due to shared signals
hows tge channel access since FCC changed ???
Can you stream via WiFi connection alone like no internet? So like wifi router on with the internet down.
Tyler, very nice I like this very clean guide this box can do a lot thanks.👍👍👍
What you think which one is better for recording Amazon fire STICK...TiVo Roamio Plus (1TB) DVR.. or ..Tablo dual lite OTA DVR..?
I prefer Tablo. Tivo has fees and the Recast has glitches Amazon refuses to fix.
Have you mentioned anywhere that the Tablo Quad has poorer recording picture quality? That's what I've heard.
