To be fair the sacrifice and rebirth aspect isn't inherent to Christ like Nick said. The Watchowskis at that point were just throwing stuff at the wall.

Seriously, on every rewatch every few years I always come away thinking "damn, I forgot how fucking tight this movie is".
End credit, Rage Against The Machine kicks in, and I always feel the same rush. Such a tight movie even if RATM suck now.
Yeah but the matrix is filled with allegory. It's actually completely shallow allegory, but nonetheless, it's allegory.
The Alice in Wonderland stuff, the allegory of the cave. But nowhere in any of that is there anything about being trans. That is totally retroactive.

Once an artist releases their art to the public it's up to each individual to interpret it in their own way. The artist no longer has a say, I mean they can, but its irrelevant.

Nick's 100% right. The Wachoskis can try to retro the story and say it's about being trans but that's bullshit, they made a kick ass sci fi kung fu movie, probably the best action movie of the 90s or of all time, and that's it. Love it for what it is. It's fucking tight and they got lucky when Will Smith turned it down and they took Keanu, who isn't the best actor but fit Neo extremely well. Would've been cool to see Val Kilmer as Morpheus like they wanted though, even if Lawrence Fishburne was great and his voice as Morpheus became iconic.
The sequels are also fun if you don't expect them to live up to the first movie, but if you hate them that much you can just ignore them because the first movie works extremely well at telling a single story and ending it there.
The Wachoskis biggest mistake was coming back to it and making a sequel (Matrix 4) instead of making a prequel about Morpheus which would have been a much more interesting concept. Morpheus is the most interesting character other than Agent Smith - tell his story about breaking free and discovering faith outside the matrix. Perhaps even have him believe he is the Chosen One throughout the movie before he comes to terms with the fact that he isn't, and instead dedicates his life to finding the true Chosen One. End the movie with him finding Neo and linking directly into Matrix 1. Would have been kino.

I sorta agree with Nick, in the sense that there's not that much depth in the Matrix movies. The Matrix is basically a retelling of Lawnmower Man, anyway. A random dipshit becomes cyber-christ. That's it. That's the only synopsis you need for the Matrix. Random office worker meets kinda hot goth chick at a bar, takes a mysterious pill given to him by a random black guy, becomes a messianic figure in a post-apocalyptic dystopia and saves the world or whatever. That's the whole movie. No greater meaning.

I'm with Nick on this one. I hate it when people retcon their creations to have meaning that was never there in the first place. If you want to make a movie about being trans, then make a movie about being trans. Don't make a completely unrelated movie and then twenty years later assign a meaning that was never there in the first place. It'd be like if the creator of Ninja Turtles came out tomorrow and said it was actually about poverty in NYC and Splinter was Jesus or something.

The matrix is a sci-fi adaptation of the cave allegory, where the character is given superpowers and the "cave" fights him. That's all it's about. If you're saying it applies to trans people, it's because the cave applies to trans people, but the whole idea of the cave allegory is that "discovering the truth" applies to literally everyone. The only reason it can be interpreted that way is because it's based on a premise that can be applied to anything

Artists tend to think they are so above everyone elses thinking, they like to think their art is so culturally relivant. The fact they are now saying the matrix was about being trans makes me laugh. Only after they came out is now a trans thing. Ok i guess but you could make that allegory about any film where the main character goes through a life change.

Looking at these clips makes me realize just how much better the original theatrical and DVD versions of the Matrix look compared to the Blu-rays. Resolution isn’t everything, the coloration/grading/grain on the originals especially if you watched them on a CRT just have a nicer look to them in my view.

Speaking of The Matrix, the fourth movie sucked. Nobody asked for it and even Lana Wachowski said she didn't want to make the movie.
The matrix series is probably one of the most thematically laden series of all time. To the point where is almost feels like an Art school project. It’s actually quite impressive the movies function with how much mysticism is shoved in.
I think the idea that Matrix is EXCLUSIVELY a trans metaphor is kinda silly because it’s evident that while gender is the primary binary that the Wachoski’s observe the phenomenon through, the point being made is far more widely applicable than merely to gender, and they took great pains to make the films reflect that. It’s kinda why they work; the idea of the repressive computer world is a VIBE and it resonates with pretty much everyone
