  • Today, let's fix and restore a vintage bench power supply (AUL210 made by ZPA Košíře in Czechoslovakia in 1983). It has two adjustable 0-36V 0.2-2A outputs, two 15V 1A outputs and one 5V 2A output. An adventurous repair journey of a cool old machine :).

    23:43 Soldering on top of existing leads during repairs was actually encouraged by Tesla to prevent the thin PCB traces from tearing or detaching from the board.

    That is actually a very fine power supply design.
    You have found a gem there !
    Though it could use a couple of cans brake cleaner to remove accumulated dust and dirt.
    Switches should be cleaned with contact cleaner afterwards.
    Find some red plastic to insert in the lenses instead of painted bulbs - replace bulbs with the ones you have with lower current to avoid plastic lenses burning out.
    0.5W 560 Ohm in series to match the 24V/20mA lamps for the 48V supply.

    I have got the same supply, it works for nearly 50 years. It seems in original state inside. It has some issues, but works. One fine tune wire potentiometer TP680 has gone and some bulbs too. The wide combination of outputs is unique, it is able to load power amps, opamps and logic from the one box. The design is simple as a hammer, even my dog can repair it ;)

    Most enjoyable to watch. I love the old through whole component construction devices, reminds me of my teenage years when I was bodging together amplifiers from second hand salvaged components, tag boards and point to point wiring. As solid state devices took over I lost interest in building. Roll on part two.

    USSR times - everything in the East Europe was Polish, Czechoslovakian or Yugoslavian parts. But over all it was quite nice piece of engineering taking into consideration limited resources and access to "western" technology and parts. Great video!

    I love how these old czechoslovakian devices have symetrical component placement and great serviceability. I have osciloscope Tesla bm 464 and i was able to fix it without any tools.

    25:07 It's funny to call it "ring testing" because that is a term I've only heard for a way to check grinding wheels for cracks. An intact and safe grinding wheel will ring when suspended and struck, while one which has a crack in it will be dampened and will not ring.
    Very similar principle!

    How to judge old electronics, lift it up and if dam heavy there is a excellent transformer in it. Nice video. The different screw lengths can be an old way to see if the equipment was opened. Who remembers which screw went where.

    Really nice!
    I would never have expected that many components for a linear supply (more than many switching ones) and surprising it still worked as well as it did with that many capacitors that was complete trash, haha - but always nice with vintage stuff that works well.

      Well, there are at least five largely separate linear supplies in there, and they appear to quite sophisticated, with thyristor pre-regulation and current limits, largely in discrete components (although I thought I saw a metal can op-amp).

      I forgot how many supplies there was - not just the 2 adjustable ones, but even the ones with fixed voltages. All of them seemed to work independently of each other as well - so they all need their own regulation circuit. That makes sense.

    I am a big fan of russian MLT resistors. They are very rugged and quite precise.
    Those bayonet type lamps are made for telephone excanges. That is why they are 48v. They were used extensively on the operator panels of the telephone exchanges to notify the said operator that there was an incoming call on a certain line.

      The lamps were 24V, and they weren't bayonet cap... so maybe pay better attention?
      These can be replaced with bulbs from incandescent Christmas Tree lights (Of suitable voltage)

      @@Bata.andrei - Well, I was referring to 16:00 which clearly shows the lamp is marked 24V. So, it seems we are both right!
      Neither the 24V or the 48V lamp is bayonet, they are "push in"... do you know what a Bayonet lamp base looks like?

      @@johncoops6897 you might be right. Back when I was an apprentice telecoms tech, I used to work on old crossbar and rotary type telephone systems. That kind of push in bulb, was colloquially know also as a boyonet among other telephone exchange techs. I never thought of it may be called otherwise, but that might be because in my native language it doesn't have another name.

    KD503 are legendary, I like them a lot.
    That's a lot of FULL BRIDGE RECTIFIERS for sure! And an obscene quantity of electrolytics to replace. :)

    I recommend to add antiparallel diode to each output. I accidentally shorted wires while having all outputs connected (I needed over 100 volts). Both KD502 were instantly damaged. Current limiter probably switched output off and it got negative voltage from other sections. In that state was on each adjustable output over 65 V (even on big 50 V capacitors).

    I just recently had some of these tesla electrolytic capacitors in a rft eo 213 oscilloscope and they all had cracks as well but surprisingly the ones in my other eo 213 are still fine.

    Great inspection and analysis! What an effort for just a rather weak DC-powersupply and how many components! I have a Server-PSU capable of 6 kW power with 42V and nearly 150 Amps with very low ripple and half the weight of this one! But a traditional linear PSU is something else than modern switch-mode PSU 🙂

      It's a 50 years old PS, build from very limited east block parts. At that time in czechoslovakia all electronics part were shortage and that PS was bloody expensive only for state owned firms. ;-)

    The SCR used as pre regulator is another ‘forgotten’ / exotic feature nowadays - not seen in several linear PS.
    It would be interesting to see it working (voltage measures at filter capacitor, under 1A load, for instance) to relieve power dissipation in the series-pass transistors, and how much noise it would generate in the outputs.

    Testing obviously bad capacitors is totally pointless.....
    But why is it that I love watching it being done???
    I mean, someone could post a 4hr long video titled testing bad capacitors and I'm not doing anything else for the next 4hrs without question!
    But methods for capacitor testing on this channel are second to none! It's just not taught in school....

    26:20 I messed about with capacitance and electrolytes for a while. If something is decomposing to release an acid, like an ester or a large alcohol, it will increase the capacitance as an electrolyte lol. I had a dried up 4700uF cap that was at 1200uF but it did 5600uF when I added 1% sulfuric acid in distilled water. It was garbage naturally because it ate like 5% of the energy lol. The more polar "mass" you add to the dielectric, the higher the capacitance but the trick is it needs to be an insulator. Afaik traditional electrolytes are alcoholic esters of borax which are large, polar molecules but don't conduct.

    Tyristor v 5V kanálu slouží jako tyristorová ochrana proti přepětí. Tento kanál slouží hlavně pro napájení TTL, a tato ochrana v případě proražení tranzistoru, otevření smyčky vyšlusuje napájení celé sekce. Něco podobného můžou dělat ty velké tyristory na chladičích, s tím že reagují na proražení prvku a nebo překročení proudového omezení. To může být taky důvod, proč ti tam ty 4A pojistky vyšlehly.
    PS: Ta oprava žárovky, slušná prasárna! Mohl jsi odpájet od té miniaturní ty kontakty a připájet ji do těch starých když už.

      Jj, ten tyristor bez chladiče zkratuje 5V, a ty dva na chladiči jsou tyristorová předregulace pro ty nastavitelný výstupy. Napětí na těch 5000uF kondíkách je nižší, když se nastaví nižší výstupní napětí. Díky tomu regulační tranzistory nemusej vytápět tolik výkonu. Ta malá žárovka je moc krátká. Sice by šlo připájet na starý kontakty jen tu skleněnou část, ale hrozilo by poškození a taky by byla moc hluboko uvnitř. Když někdy seženu tu spránou, můžu tam dát správnou.

    POOP RESIN :D Jinak mrkni na manuál k TSZ75, ten je dostupnej a i schemata, je to naprosto ten samej zdroj. Já mám doma TSZ, musím říct že to přepínání napětí je pecka, pozdější AUL zdroje s poťákama a ledkovýma měřákama jsou opruz na obsluhu, furt přepínáš měřák na napětí a něčím točíš, tady nacvakáš co potřebuješ a jedeš. 😉 Schema k TSZ jsem už dlouho neviděl, ale pokud se nepletu, ty tyristory jsou crowbar přepěťovky, ne řízený usměrňovač. Usměrnovače máš 3 složený z KY diod na chladiči, pro A,B a 5V zdroj, pro 15V zdroje jsou to ty diody na plošňáku.

    If they are thyristors on the board, they would have to be GTOs (gate turn off thyristors); they are more likely to be transitors in a weird case.

    Very interesting 40 years in the electronic industry EVERYTHING was liner supplies when I started, but don't think I have ever seen one without a voltmeter . I would be nervous of a failure in regulation and at low voltage setting it would actually be putting out full voltage . (Scaredy cat) Thyristor on the fixed "might" be crowbar protection , if voltage goes above fixed , it shorts output and blows the fuse ?

      Yes, the thyristor with no heatsink is to short the 5V output if for any reason (internal failure or external backfeeding) the voltage goes above 6V.

    I believe the fuses are German coded. F=flink, SF=super(or sehr) flink, T=träge, ST=super träge. That's what we've learned in school. Greetings from neighbour country Austria.

    at 23:56 the brown 270R resistor on the left seems to be cracked maybe it is damaged as well

    interesting but, why did those 4A fuses blew with just 2A of current? Or what are the actually "fusing"?

      They were supposed to be slow burn fuses and they were fast burn.

      Time delay or slow blow fuses allow for a temporary current surge without going above the fuse's current rating.

      It's made in Czechoslovakia, mostly using Czechoslovak components and few soviet.
