at that moment there was no race, no religion, no sexual orientation, just a whole nation proud to be Canadian. any stranger got hugged, shared a beer and became your best friend and we sure need a day like that one now. also, nine months later there were many babies born.
I remember back in 1972 Canada played a series of games against the Soviet Red Army team (The Summit Series). I was 8 years old and was amazed that the school suspended classes and sat us all down to watch the games on TV. Even way back then Hockey meant everything to Canadians. In 2010 I was watching the Gold Medal Game at home in Edmonton, within seconds of the winning goal the neighborhood erupted in cheering and horns honking. I will always remember this moment as well as Paul Henderson scoring the winning goal in 1972.
When NHL players are actually allowed at the Olympics Canada wins gold a lot. This one was just special because it was won on Canadian soil in Vancouver
This celebration went on for hours after the game. People singing and dancing in the streets. It was pretty fun and so much of an emotional high that I’m not sure anything else would compare for me.
I live in Vancouver where this game happened and its probably the best sporting moment in my life, that day was so crazy. thing about it was Canada was up 2-0 then USA tied it up with like 24 seconds left. Going into OT was the most nervous ive ever been and when Crosby scored me and the entire country lost our minds. such an amazing experience. Great reaction man!!!
I will never forget experiencing this in person. I may have only been 9 years old, but this is cemented in my brain forever. And the flash mobs were incredible
Thanks for your reaction to that great event. I wasn’t in Vancouver but watched the game from Ontario. The country was on a high for weeks. And yes it was Crosby. 👏👏🇨🇦🇨🇦👏👏🇨🇦🇨🇦
I was watching this game with my High school bestie in the balcony at the Rio Theatre. The place was packed well beyond fire capacity. When Sid scored that goal, I thought that the balcony would collapse. If it had, I would have died a happy, happy man right then and there. After, it was like all public drinking laws ceased to exist. Random people were passing around cans of Molson. The whole nation was drunk for week.
If you want to see more of what these Olympics meant to Canada, I would suggest watching “CTV’s final “I Believe” Montage”. It starts with a monologue about how the country came together and ends with a beautiful montage showing various moments from the games.
A lot of those individual clips were of Canadians outside of Canada too... one was a bar in New York, some others were of Canadians on vacation in the islands...
The teacher I had in grade 4 (4th grade for Americana) was dating an athlete who was carrying the Olympic torch through my small Ontario town. She came into my school and I got to hold that Olympic torch then watch Canada win gold. I was 10 years old in 2010 and I have a picture of me holding the torch
This day man. I had a physio therapy session that day. I showed and the whole place was watching this game. I was like alright I’m out and Ran the fuck home to catch third period. And OT. Everyone knows what they were doing lol. I subbed Bro. Take care bro PS you probably know ya missed part 1 the build up to the OT

I remember those games well. Probably the only time in Cdn history that whole schools watched hockey during class time
