I have a couple of questions. Why not use plexiglass for the windows instead of the plastic sheets, and does the stove heat up the loft? And do you worry about strangers taking refuge in it when you are not there?

It looks like the cutouts allow more space for the toes to clear each step, especially when wearing bulky shoes. I have small feet but have experienced very narrow steps that forced me to walk sideways so I didn't stumble when my toes hit the step above when climbing. You don't have as much stability/balance when climbing if you just step up by your toes, using your feet instead of your strong legs to push up. If you have ever experienced pain of the ball of your foot, you know that narrow steps are excruciating. Some people have thicker "padding" at the ball of their feet and don't notice when they are making the feet do the hard work better suited for the leg muscles. That is what I guessed immediately when I saw what he was doing. I could be wrong and he just did it because he likes the look.
It's to allow for a st. eeper stair to reduce the angle and therefore the area the staircases 'footprint' . Loft stairs in European accommodation are often designed this way...... Its a bit goofy to use but you get the hang of it !,😊
