Hey guys what do you think ? MINI 2 or Air2S? Both really good. No editing or filters 4k and 5.4k on a 4K timeline as TH-cam currently cannot play full res 5k video.
Having owned and flown the Mavic 2 Pro and the Mini 2 professionally the M2P with it's 1 inch sensor and 20mp did win the photo vote (but not by much) The 4k is superb on both. When the new rules came in at the start of 2021 I sold both my M2P and bought a couple of Mini 2s. As the M2P and indeed the Air2s are above the 250g A1 category they are getting so restrictive to fly both socially and professionally due to distance on take off, distance in the air and overflying things in general it became a real ballache to get the shots and video my clients wanted and to stay legal. The Mini 2 however doesnt suffer from those restrictions so as a professional drone pilot it is a no brainer for me . . .Am I prepared to sacrifice a tad on photo quality (and lets be honest here, most clients are looking for an overall vision of the shot / building / site from the air and they're not into pixel peeping) the answer is an overwhelming yes. The Mini 2 can legally go places and achieve things that heavier drones can't and personally, my opinion is that I can get better, safer and air legal results from this drone than anything in the A2 category and my clients haven't noticed any difference.
I have both the Mini 2 and Air 2s. I agree they both take superb video and photos. I do notice the Air 2s can handle high contrast better, such as clouds are more defined. That was noticeable in your examples. Also if you pixel peep the Air 2s has greater definition, but not noticeable with normal viewing. For the colour differences, I don’t think that matters if you are going to edit in production. By choice, I use the Air 2s, but of course whenever flying in urban area, or near people I use the Mini 2 to follow the regulations - and when international travel returns, it will be the Mini 2 going with me for its greater flexibility and portability. The Air 2s is an excellent drone if personal finances allow for multiple drones, but for an all purpose drone, it should be the Mini 2 without question.
If DJI would give us a D-Cinelike profile on the Mini 2, more flexibility in post processing would help out a lot with the over saturation and the limited dynamic range of the smaller sensor.
Generally I notice the wider field of view on the Air 2S. Both are very good and that's why I have both. :) I would love to see a comparison of the 1st gen Air against the Air 2S. I think the original Air is still comparable even with its age.
Both are very good (in my opinion) but the mini 2 (in my opinion) is better because it has less restrictions and regulations put over it and is a tad bit more portable which is a big plus to carry on a camping trip etc. I think that all the mini 2 would need is front sensors… the only thing I would like and active track would be nice but its not very necessary. Great vid btw!❤️
Good morning Darren need some advice I was flying my mini 2 for about 23 minutes yesterday but when you download the videos it only does around 6 minute clips how do you out it in to one video if you could advise me please no rush though I know your a busy man but when you have a chance would really appreciate thanks keep up the good work and the videos 😁👍
This was fantastic! Exactly what I’ve been looking to see. The air 2s defiantly takes the cake in the shadows and dynamic range. Lots of detail in shadows and the highlights in the Air 2s. Great video and loving the daily content! I hope you have some days off haha
Good comparison Darren! In good light either one is a great hobbyist camera drone. I do expect to see more of a difference in your low light comparison. I understand the weight restrictions in the UK an other places for the average photographer/drone pilot. A comparison like this between the Air 2 and Air 2S would also be interesting. IMHO both these drones won in this comparison.
For the price mini 2 is fantastic!! Not a $500 difference for me at the moment. I actually like the color saturation on the mini 2. Maybe I have bad taste!!
I am surprised I almost thought you mixed them up. I always add some more color to the images of the mini 2. But as far as I know ND filters might help you a bit to prevent “clipping” of the sensor, but the should not change the colours.
I have a mini 2 and it is a great drone. For professional work, I would like that extra bit of perfection that the air2S offers, but with the legacy drone changes coming in soon and the Mavic 3 coming out soon, I think I will be waiting to make a purchase of the Mavic 3. Every fibre in my being wants to buy an air2s right now, but I am listening to my brain, instead of my heart, for now.
You will likely be glad you did wait but expect to see a huge price difference. It is expected at the end of August or beginning of Sept. if all goes well.
Hi Darren, its all subjective but gotta say I prefer the mini 2 out of the camera. It can be changed in post obvs but for the trade-offs the mini 2 wins for me. Did a shoot in St Michaels today which is a place you will know and the client loved how quiet it was not annoying his neighbors
Interesting comparison and a great video. When I have sold photos, I tend to do a few post processing tweaks in Affinity Photo, anyway. I always shoot in raw as well and that goes for my drone and dslr work as well.
@@DMProductions I only have one drone and that is the Mini 2. I got the fly more combo, then invested in 3 more batteries and another charging hub for speed and flexibility. Shame that the weather down here in the south west has been so hit and miss lately. Cannot fault the Mini 2 though. Perfect for my needs. 🙂
Great side by side comparison! I honestly got every one of them wrong. I kind of like the over saturated look a bit better but when you showed the scopes it was night and day for me. On the other hand the Air 2S does have a lot of other features that I think more than make up the difference for the gap in the price. Cheers!
@@desertdronepilot That's the first time I've seen 5k on YT. It seemed to jump from 4k to 8k in other videos I've seen but no 5k. I guess it doesn't really matter unless someone has a 5k monitor or TV to view it on but it is cool to see it can be done for future viewing on higher res monitors.
On my iPad, which presents at 1080p, I prefer the images from the Mini 2. As noted, you can always drop the saturation back a bit in post. I would bet one could match the color saturation of both videos in LumaFusion or any other video editor. Great comparison video. I went from the Pro 2 to the Mini 2. Almost waited, but glad I jumped on the Mini 2.
Great comparison D many thanks for sharing that. Tbh the difference wasn’t as big as I was expecting. I think seeing a native 5.4K would show a difference but personally I’ve only got 4K to watch anything back on. Does an 8K tv have a 5.4K option maybe 🤔? Photos both good and the mini 2 natural grading looked very good in comparison. Great vid as always 😊👍🏻
Yes but currently not many have 8k TVs but TH-cam also compresses this, out of memory card direct it’s very good footage. That said both are great. Wait for low light :-)
I have never flown the mini 2 but I am so impressed with the Air2s. For me it's worth the difference. Yes it's more expensive than the mini 2 but it's as good as the Autel Evo2 and the Mavic 2 pro for a lot less money.
sorry i like the mini2 photos more, the only thing i like that the air 2 s has in the photos are the better blue sky's. more contrast , but then a change of iso and shutter speed could make that change for me, right now im awaiting a new CPL filter as i lost mine when a rouge tree jumped out and attacked my drone. i find cpl filter always improves the quality of the films and photos, do have an 32ND, but not keen on it.
you can't honestly compare these two drones, there's a 500bucks difference man that's not fair lol. Of course that 1inch sensor is going to win, all day lol. I've been watching all your mini 2 videos and I'm still on the edge of buying it cause it's so light.. what if it blows away in heavy wind and that horizon tilt would drive me crazy, I don't have them problems with my spark at all, it's a beast in the wind and my horizon is always perfect lol. what you think? should I wait for the mini 3 or keep waiting to see if they fix that horizon tilt? or just keep my trusty spark lol.
Only a few are having the issues with the horizon tilt, 2s wins yes but both are still really good, I also liked the spark but mini 2 is good in the wind and with the extra battery life and 4k you will see a good upgrade
The Air2S clearly has the better camera. But the Mini 2 is plenty good enough for me. It would be interesting to see how close you could get Mini 2 footage to match the Air2S using some post editing (reduce saturation, etc.) The Air2S will always be a little better, but I bet you could get the Mini 2 footage close enough to fool some people.
Using a nd filter for video you can get better results but yes the Air2S footage direct out of memory card is really good. Low light should be interesting
For me it's the Mini 2. I can't justify the cost of the Air2s. The extra cost of around £650 just isn't worth it. Yes it's a good bit of kit but not that much more it's not.
I think the mini 2 looks better on the colours in the greens and so on 👀 I could be colour blind I guess 😞 Although I don't really know what saturation is 😅
I kind of liked the over saturation. After I get my 107 so I'm not inadvertently accused of trying to do something commercial, maybe I will go for some commercial $ and subsidize an air 2s or whatever the next shiny thing is. Actually in that money range I like that super tough water proof orange drone that has the screen built into the controller.
I'm a huge fan but I don't think the commentary surrounding saturation and even color science was helpful. The Air 2S could have used a splash of saturation while the Mini 2 could have been dialed back in post-production in seconds. The color science is a bit harder to change in post (depending on your LUT or color-correction experience) but simply dialing back the saturation and perhaps adjusting the White Balance slightly could have made a significant difference with the Mini 2 footage. If that was 10-bit D-Log on the Air 2S then it's designed for color-correction in post. But if your viewers are looking for straight-out-of-the-camera results that don't pop or have any character, then I agree with all of your commentary. Bottom line is that a better comparison would involve the color-corrections necessary to make both drones shine, while looking for the $500 differences on the margin. But don't get me wrong, I love your content and hard work!!!!!!
No thats exact spot on buddy, I wanted to show straight out of camera, what it looks like for people who just don’t know how to colour grade or don’t want to. Sure I could edit both and follow up videos will be coming showing that along with 10-but d log and low light video. Thanks for the feedback 😊
@@DMProductions Okay perfect! I have the Mini 2 and M2P (among many others... ugh) so I'm constantly playing with the results in post. In my experience, the Mini 2 footage can withstand considerable color-correction including up to 1 f-stop of exposure adjustment using an s-curve. Of course, the 10-bit D-Log is more flexible for everything including full blown color-grades. But most drone footage doesn't involve color-grading (I'm making a distinction with color-correction). But you can always apply a LUT to remap the Mini 2 footage, although DJI's color science is quite good so I don't bother. Once I've completed a color-correction on footage from both drones, I can't tell the difference in 'daylight' footage. In fact, the Mini 2 has better image definition than the M2P in Full FOV mode. Only Golden Hour footage begins to reveal notable differences (and of course Civil Twilight) -- but even that is similar with added exposure corrections (inverted s-curve) and slight noise reduction (temporal and spatial). I actually preferred the mini 2 photos😕
So did I
Yes. I think the Air 2 looked like unprocessed raw photos on several occasions. A slight over saturation is preferable between the two.

Blessed to have both. Got the Mini 2 ‘cause less restrictions and the Air 2S ‘cause I was not able to resist the better camera.
If DJI would give us a D-Cinelike profile on the Mini 2, more flexibility in post processing would help out a lot with the over saturation and the limited dynamic range of the smaller sensor.
Good comparison, I wonder if one edited out the saturation on the mini 2 in post, how that would perform in a similar comparison.....
Maybe yes. Think the Air2S will still have the edge, low light will be interesting
DJI Air 2S for me!!! Love that it captures more natural colors.

The mini 2 is a great drone. I have very satisfied with video/photo quality of the mini 2. Thank you for doing this comparison.

Hi Darren....forgive my naivety....is the oversaturation on the Mini 2 compared to the Air2 something that DJI could fix
Hm maybe but it’s never going to be as clear due to the smaller sensor and 12mp vs 20
