Not gonna lie kind of wish they kept the plane in Long Beach.....I mean a historic plane neighboring a historic ship? That's just awesome

Miles Prower yea that would’ve been awesome. Once the plane left they tried replacing it with the submarine next to the ship.

It would have definitely been a great cluster of history for the city. Sadly, it was not meant to be.

      Disney.
      ...and possibly property tax pressure.

Great video, but one thing about when Carnival started using part of the dome as a cruise terminal - they began operations in 2001 with the Carnival Elation. By 2016, at least four Carnival ships that called it home had moved on to different ports and destinations. I believe 2016 is when they renovated and expanded it.

As a kid i remember visiting the Queen Mary with family an they just positioned the Spruce Goose next door back in the early 80s before any dome was built

I remember seeing "Star Trek: The Exhibit" inside the dome around 2008.

I knew about the 'Goose but didn't know what else had been done with the dome. Thanks for sharing. :-)

I went to see this attraction along with the Queen Mary. I kept the flyer they gave out as a souvenir ..and have it still after 37 moves. Was quite the plane.

I never got to see that when I lived in California even though my ex-husband's grandfather built the dome.

I was a Tour Guide aboard the Queen Mary, when the H-4 (Spruce Goose) was brought into the Dome.

I graduated Wilson HS in 81 ha so remember this well.
It had some nicknames like the giant pimple ha.
Actually there was a LOT going on at that time including dredging out the harbor marina etc.
After that flight Hughes said “it should never fly again” it was an unflyable disaster.

Went inside the dome about 15 years ago... I remember having anxiety as it felt like the structure just wasn't stable and could fall in at any moment. creepy as heck ill say that.

That's ironic considering it's a dome. A dome's main attribute is strength. They are often used as emergency tornado shelters. So I'd wager to bet this is the *most* stable structure you have ever been in.

They moved the Spruce Goose with the worlds largest self propelled barge mounted crane Herman The German that was captured from Germany after WW II. I got to go on the crane when I worked in the Navy base in Long Beach ,CA. it was some else to see. They moved the Spruce Goose out of it's storage hanger in the middle of the night for it's trip over to the Queen Mary. I have a post card of it being moved.

The clip failed to mention that the late, long-time 790 KABC late night talk show host Ray Briem lobbied on the air for many years to get the dome funded so the Spruce Goose brought out of mothballs and into a place of prominence it so richly deserved.

The “Spruce Goose” dome needs work to prevent structural integrity issues. This is critical since Carnival uses the dome for passenger loading at its terminal and plans to reopen for cruises later this year.

Let Carnival do the repairs, NOT taxpayers. We've been screwed over enough already by city hall with the QM and the new City Hall & Civic Center. Instead of using the old City Hall to house the never-ending homeless population, they want to tear it down. SMH

The plane looked much larger inside the dome because of the way they set up the lighting. In McMinnville, the plane dosen't seem as impressive because you can see the entire plane in daylight.

I miss the Spruce Goose but as a local let's face it...you see it once in the 80s and never go back....(be honest) ...AND we now have BB61 just down the way ....The Legendary USS Iowa!

Disney bought the land and didn't want the plane. Evergreen air cargo took ownership and they were located in Oregon. McMinnville is out out the way but is a nice place anyway, and there is an airport in walking distance so private pilots can stop in easy enough, and the wings&waves waterpark in the next building with a 747 on the roof converted into water slides.

Give it a try. The Museum is fantastic. Also remember Evergreen saved the plane from Disney a totally disgusting company.
