  • We get to sit in the cockpit of the Hughes H-4 Hercules, better known as the Spruce Goose. Cara sat in Howard Hughes' seat even! We also checked out the rest of the museum and grounds at the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum in McMinnville, Oregon.

I can tell you guys aren't really plane "nerds" but it's nice to see the excitement you get from the displays anyway. It is a very cool museum and I enjoyed your tour and your enthusiasm!

It's true we aren't nerds for it specifically, but it was still a really cool experience that we really enjoyed. It's always cool to learn about new stuff. Thanks for watching the video!

Howard Hughes is my cousin. I was present in 1982 in Long Beach when The Hercules was put into the dome.

I remember going to see the Spruce Goose in Long Beach back in 1991. Yup, it's pretty big!

I have been there and it was such a great experience to sit where Howard sat. I have wanted to see ever since the movie The Aviator came out and I was up in Washington for Christmas a few years ago and this one of the places we visited and it was a great surprise when we got there.

I could tell you stories. 👍😂 I worked for Evergreen for 10 years as a Loadmaster and Operations Manager. Had a few friends that worked at the museum. One, Tony Prutch, took me up into the cockpit and got to sit in that seat before it was open to the public. If you looked back up into the tail section... theres a pair of panties way up in the woodwork up there, just hanging there. 😂😂😂😂 Cant remember who exactly, but some actress that Hughes was dating back in the day... pointed out to me. Anyway, we used to call it the “Birch Bitch” because its actually Birch, and we spent some weekends sanding on the thing when it was still on the other side of the highway out there, before the museum was built (which was built around it). And that 747-200 that is a water park now, used to be one of the planes ✈️ we actually loaded. N472 in fact, is one we took into Khabul Afghanistan for what was called “The Mothers Day Mission Of Mercy” during the war over there. 300,000 pounds of relief supplies was delivered. Anyway, alot of the smaller planes like the Corsair, the B-17, and the P51 Mustang used to be kept in the AMC Hangars at PDX (Portland International Airport), and the mechanic in charge was actually named Mike Wright. This was all before the museum was built. Anyway, I still remember when they first got the SR-71 Blackbird. I was told the development and technology for that sucker was actually underway, wayyyyy back in the late 50’s early 60’s. Makes ya wonder what they have today that we don’t know about. Id say we’re easily decades behind whatever our government has hidden away. Great video!!! 👍👍👍 Sad for me in a way... all the N tail numbers minus the waterpark one, and one thats parked out there on the grounds, are all rotting away in the desert out in Marana Arizona now (Penal Air Park). And I can only reminisce on the good old days when everything was still operating. Take care y’all. Loved the video.

It was huge! And so crazy that most of it was made out of wood. Hughes was a really interesting man.

Overall Great, fun and nostalgic video (for me). I remember my family bringing me to see it in 1985 or so when it was at Long Beach, Ca.
Anyway, calling the H4 Hercules "Spruce Goose" would have visibly upset Howard in his day. The media of the 1940s called it that and the name stuck, even though as y'all know it's made of almost entirely Birch wood.
Howard Hated when people called it "Spruce Goose". It was definitely a derogatory expression for all his hard work.
Great Video though Y'all. Thank you for sharing.

I think Hughes claimed it was under powered and a little rickety. I don't think he wanted to risk flying it more than he had to because he cared so much about it and he wanted to preserve it. The U.S government actually owned the plane and wanted to scrap it so Howard actually paid millions of dollars to lease the plane from the government and store it, I'm sure he would be extremely happy to know it's still around.
