When a 5-year-old says her idea of something fun to do is a museum, you know her parents are doing something very right. Riley is seeing possibilities, and you are encouraging unlimited dreams for her future. Kudos!

Casey, you’re a very lucky man #1 to be able to spend the kind of time that you do with your daughter#2 your daughter enjoys being with you and having fun with you ,there’s no amount of money in the world that would ever take the place of that. You are rich beyond your wildest dreams.

Casey, thank you for promoting the Evergreen Aircraft museum. The building of this museum and getting the spruce goose moved from Long Beach California up to Oregon is a story in itself. This museum as a national treasure of just the spruce goose but all the other aircraft is in the place too. I've been to this museum three times and I could tell they rearranged the museum since I was there last. I have my own picture of trying to look like Howard Hughes sitting in the left seat at the controls. I found Howard Hughes was a little taller then I am , and has a smaller head than I do. The docent giving the tour upstairs didn't say anything about the hat it was sitting behind pilot seat, it was Howard Hughes hat. It looks like you and your daughter had a great time, so it wasn't a completely wasted day.

Riley is just such a lovely, bright and curious little sweetie pie! Puts my mind in my "Grand Daddy" mode :) Just love how the first thing she thought of was wanting to find a museum! Reminds me of being about her age and all the museums my parents took us kids to. Some of the cool stuff too our aunt was able to take us on, like a helicopter ride from JFK Airport to the top of the Pan-Am building in NYC. Or Aunties' taking us to her company's holiday party at a JFK Airport hanger with big cargo airplanes to explore inside and Santa Claus arriving by helicopter. Which is all to say how wonderful it is to give a child such lasting memories of exploration. Even at a young age these little journeys are lasting, they make a deep impression on their "Wonder Muscle"! How delightful to see a bummer of a 3 hour road trip rescued into a super father-daughter adventure! :)

I worked at the Hughes plant in Culver City in the 80's, when it was Hughes Helicopters. Three huge long buildings are at the center of the complex, side by side. One was used to build each wing, and one for the fuselage. The nearest harbor was Marina del Rey, but it was much too small for testing, so they went down to Long Beach. The plane had to be moved in those three separate sections about 25 miles and then assembled at the harbor. The most amazing statistic is that it had to go through 22 separate municipalities and townships, and only Howard Hughes had the political moxie to have them move three thousand utility wires out of the way on the roads between Culver City and Long Beach!
I heard third hand from a coworker a story about a mechanic who was in the wing during the test run, to monitor the engines. It was only supposed to be a water taxi test, but when the mechanic heard the throttles go to full power, he knew Hughes was going to fly the darned thing, so he hurriedly scrambled back to the fuselage.
It was also interesting to watch them build the geodesic dome that covered the plane in Long Beach. They first erected a big tower, and dropped cables to the ground. They attached them to a small ring on the ground, then lifted it a little, and attached the first dome layer, and then lifted that a little. This way they could work on each new layer from the ground, and then remove the tower when it was finished.
In contrast to the end of his life, at his peak Howard Hughes was brilliant. The building I worked in was formerly a machine shop that was kept ready 24 hours a day. Whenever Hughes got an idea to work out, he would show up at any hour and work it out in the shop.
You can also imagine the value of that land in oceanfront Los Angeles. Well, Hughes had his company organized as a Subchapter S Sole Proprietorship. A lot of the land was not buildable because of the proximity to the big runway, so he leased it out to pumpkin farmers. Not only did he not pay property tax on that part of the land (I was told), but he got an agricultural subsidy! On his death, those 946 acres sold for a million dollars an acre. It's now a residential development called Playa Vista.
So glad you turned the day around!

In 1949 I was 7 & went to our local airport to an air show in Australia with basically ww2 type aircraft & have a photo of me hanging onto the wing tip of a P51 Mustang like I wanted to take it home.
This resulted in my dreams turning into 35 years of flying from fabric & wood bi-plane to Airbus - a dream come true.
    Good on you Casey.

There is a very interesting story on how they got the Spruce Goose from California to Oregon including moving them along rivers and the final road trip which includes heavy equipment you have featured on your channel! Thanks again Casey for the awesome content, hope to get to that museum one day. 🙂

Back in the 80’s & 90’s I. Was doing California trips as a tour bus operator and stayed one night on the Queen Mary ship that had been converted to a hotel. Next to the Queen Mary was the Spruce Goose. It is huge and is amazing that it could actually fly, although how far we will never know. The story of why it was built and why it never went into service is just as interesting.

I miss the old Goose. I used to go visit her often. I loved seeing her sitting at the edge of the harbor she once flew above, proving all of those people wrong. I still think it's a shame she no longer resides in Long Beach. The Queen Mary is still holding down the fort but the Spruce Goose dome was converted into a Carnival Cruise Line terminal. At least she's being well taken care of.

Great job dad! They had a summer hire program & I got to work a few summers handing out tools to people working on the SR 71. I knew the man running the program very well. His story is quite interesting, but I doubt you'd find it anywhere among "the official stories". Much later I would take groups of employees on tours of the maintenance operations in Palmdale that ended with a trip to the end of the runway to watch the plane take off over our heads. Very impressive looking up the tail pipes with the afterburners lit! Regardless of what created this extended time with Riley (?) you'll appreciate and remember these times together forever! Stay safe and have lots of fun together!

That's awesome Casey!! When I was about 10 (so 40+ or- years ago) I got to see the Spruce Goose (and the Queen Mary) back when they were in Long Beach. An amazing aircraft!! Good on you for making the best of a bad day and getting to spend quality time with your daughter!!

The SR-71 Blackbird and the X-15 are my all time favorite rocket-planes, ever!

Love the Howard Hughes pose, Riley! The Spruce Goose used to be parked in Long Beach, CA by the Queen Mary before it was purchased for this museum. Even sitting near the Queen Mary the Spruce Goose looked huge. Thanks for taking us along on your daddy-time tour with Ms. Riley.

As a daughter of a Dad who did so much of this with me, I can promise these will be some of her best memories….

Casey, great video. It is amazing spending precious time with your daughter. I appreciate the tour of the museum. I had a chance to see the Black Bird loaded on several trucks hauling it to the museum. I was at the old Burns Brothers truck stop by Wilsonville. I'm glad to get to see it once again.
