Thanks for the video but you forgot some BIG golf games whose omissions really hurt your video. - Jack Nicklaus Signature Edition (1992) was the best golf game for its time and had a tremendous course editor. - Front Page Sports Golf (1997) was the first game to have a mouse-swing. - The PGA games of the late 90s were true competitors to Links. - GolfTopia (2020) is the highest-rated golf game on Steam and a rebirth of Sid Meier's Golf.
Today, I offer you a video that traces the evolution of golf games since 1978. Have you played these games? What is the best golf game in your opinion? Feel free to list in the comments any games I may have forgotten. Thanks
Which of these golf games totally let the players to adjust force to however they intend to swing the club, instead of focusing on whether you managed to reach an optimal power with the bouncing cursor? It would be more realistic and rational.
Golf games (outside of the Atari 2600 version) have always looked heads and tails better than any other game going back to the NES. I remember being a small child and playing "NICK FALDO'S OPEN" on the C64 and being fascinated by the whole caddy club exchange on the bottom of the screen. The PS1 games were already starting to look, sound and play almost identical to what we have today. Really shows the creativity the early designers had and how to squeeze the most out of a few MBs of code Another great vid. I love what you do
Played quite a bit from the 'big two' for console golf series, Mario Golf (for Nintendo) and Everybody's/Hotshots Golf (for Playstation, until the latest installment, "Easy Come, Easy Golf", which came on Switch). Also did some PangYa, a few of the NES and PC ones, and also Golf With Your Friends.
Apart from 'linguistics,' which I took an interest in for the first time ever in 1990, in the 11th grade of high school -- the only other 'hobby' that I've had is video gaming -- which hobby I've had from the early 80s to the present date. I like a 'quasi-wide' variety of genre of PC games -- though the genres of PC games that I have spent the most time on, BY FAR, are golfing simulators, commercial and fighter aircraft simulators, vehicular racing simulators (esp. cars such as Formula 1, Rally Racing, and many others), and first person shooters -- to only a small extent RTS (real time strategy), and role-playing. My favorite first person shooters of all time are Doom, Heretic, and Halflife 1 and 2. I have played golfing simulators since the mid 80s ("Mean 18") to the present. I have always innately been very good and these games -far better than most others, I'm sure, who have also played them. Ironically, if not MORONICALLY, apart from 'mini golf,' which I played twice in my life only and was very good at -- I have never even picked up or used a golf club in my life; I hence have no actual real life golfing experience. If the 'swing mechanics' of a golf swing didn't seem so 'unnatural' and complex to me -- I'm sure that my innate understanding of golf and my uber "Bruce Lee-esque" scientific mind of about all things I take an interest in -- would allow me to be an awesome golfer in real life. But I'm almost certain -without ever having picked up a golf club other than the putter- that I could never master a golf swing and make good contact with the ball -either drive, approach shot, etc.... Nor have I ever had any money in my life -- hence any money to buy a set of clubs and attempt to take up the game of golf...
My favorite golf games were, Outlaw Golf 2, and Links 2004. I currently have The Golf Club, Everybody's Golf, and PGA 2K23 on PS4 and Walkabout Mini Golf on PS5. Also, Nintendo Switch Sports and Mario Golf Super Rush on Switch.
Tiger Woods 14 is my personal favourite. It has all four majors, an amazing legend roster and lots of options to customise the difficulty so you can make the game as arcadey or realistic as you like.
21:39 That is definitely NOT _Wii Sports Resort_ (maybe it was on the Wii, but it's the wrong game.) Was kinda hoping you would wait until the golf update for _Nintendo Switch Sports_ came out, or maybe _Sports Story_ (which still has golf,) but this is fine for now.
"World Tour Golf" from 1985 is missing. It had a powerful course editor for its time. And neglecting both Links 386 Pro and Links 2003 is outright blasphemy.
How are you going to make this and not include the Links LS 98 thru 2004 Series? And Golden Tee deserves a mention as they've been playing tournaments in bars for over 20 years on that game.
You should have included the original Leaderboard. As far as I know, that was the first "realistic" 3D golf game. It certainly blew me away when I first saw it on the C64. 7:55 - Your ROM image is FUBAR.
Lots of games I never heard of but I have/had some that were not shown. Front Page Sports Golf, PGA Championship Golf 1999, PGA 2000, Jack Nicklaus Golden Bear Challenge and Custom Golf come to mind. In my opinion the most realistic golf game I have played is Perfect Golf. Unfortunately it was bought by Trackman and the two principals now create the courses for the TM simulator. I rank TW08 as the best of the TW series and the last one on PC. I understand that the upcoming EA PGA Tour Golf game scheduled to be released in the spring of 2023 will have a PC version. I also noticed that the hoary old 3 click, 2 click whether it was a half circle or bar goes way back to 1994.
I'm a life-long connoisseur of PC golfing. I like your list; it's as if the people who make these videos aren't very knowledgable or don't do much research. Front Page Sports Golf (developed by Sierra Sports in 1997?) was revolutionary because if I recall it was the first ever golf game to utilize a real-time swing. I played a demo only of this game; never owned the full version. I owned Jack Bear: Golden Bear Challenge. For me, the most revolutionary golf franchise ever (most realistic, best physics and graphics, TONS of options) was the Links Series which was developed by Salt Lake City based Access Software -- which was later sold to Microsoft in the early 2000s. The first game came out in '97? It was totally heads above all other golf games. Since Links has been obsolete, the only good PC golf franchise that I have found so far is the Tiger Woods series.
@@yaantsudnbesdai972 Yes, you correct, Front Page Sports Golf was the first PC golf game with a mouse swing. Their later releases with True Swing were PGA Tour 1999 and PGA Tour 2000. I have been using a mouse swing since then. The absolute best mouse swing I have used for any game is RTSM or real time swing mouse in Perfect Golf. As a golfer I appreciate how it incorporates two fundamentals of a real golf swing, tempo and swing path. If you move your mouse on an inside out path it promotes a draw, too much and it becomes a hook. An outside in path and you promote a fade, too much and it is a slice. At the same time the speed of your backswing compared to your downswing also impacts ball flight. The ideal ratio is .25 where your downswing is 4 times faster than your backswing so for example, if you get a ratio of .18 it will promote a hook. These readings are displayed only when you are on the range or in practice mode on a course which is equivalent to using a Trackman. All other play modes do not display any of these so like real golf you think you know why you hooked or sliced and try to compensate in your next swing. It is a shame that the development of Perfect Golf stopped after they were bought by Trackman. I consider swing methods like 3C and 2C as strictly arcade with no relationship whatsoever to a real golf swing.
@@McHugh1949 You seem to also appreciate utmost 'realism' in golf games. I do too, as I do all PC games I play: The more realistic, the more difficult, the more challenging -but the more rewarding...and the 'funner' that game is... When I play or purchase PC "sims," that's what I hope to get; a true 'simulation' as opposed to an arcade -whether it be a combat jet flight simulator, a Formula 1 racing games, etc. If I were to create a PC golf game, I would think of EVERYTHING; perhaps someone like you would as well: Try and make the game so that every type of swing takes into account skill and precision or a lack of such. How do I make bunker shots realistic so that it's simply not a simple back swing and a down swing but somehow takes into account the lie, the texture of the sand, whether or not the ball is plugged, etc. etc. Even before I read your golf, I added only one golf game to my Steam "Wish List": Perfect Golf. I currently don't have the specs to be able to run this game but when I can afford to upgrade my PC, I hope to give this game a shot in the future...
i came to say this exact thing. Golden Bear Challenge's gameplay and relative realism were the standard bearers for ages. I was disappointed that this didn't have that game in the list.

You need to make the ball fly up and also aim and calculate the speed. 14:15 *2002* (2 decades ago). Seems like the wind or something makes the ball go left. 23:14 *2012* (1 decade ago).
