    From www.kevincaron.com - Artist Kevin Caron test drives the new AHP AlphaTIG 225Xi TIG welder, welding aluminum and steel ....
    Kevin Caron is looking at the new machine from AHP, the AlphaTIG 225Xi.
    All you analog lovers out there will be happy to know AHP went back to knobs - there are no digital controls on this machine, just knobs and buttons. That's old school and reliable as all heck.
    This TIG / stick welder comes with their Nova package with the upgraded foot pedal and the upgraded torch with the swivel head, which Kevin Caron finds really handy. He's always changing angles when welding. Kevin Caron also shows the finger control on this F17 torch body. It fits your hand nicely to prevent cramps.
    On the lower front of the welder are the cable hookups: gas line, ground, and torch control for finger control or foot pedal.
    On the back in the machine, they even included a plug for a water cooler. Also on the back is the on / off switch. Kevin Caron turns on the TIG welder.
    Now he can play with some knobs! Kevin Caron shows where to set starting and ending amperage, upslope and downslope as well as post flow. There are also knobs for amperage control, main amperage control, and AC settings, both frequency and cleaning. Pulse settings are to the right: full frequency, base amps and pulse width.
    In the upper right of the panel are the controls for the remote, modes AC / DC and stick, and pulse: off, low and high. Of course, there's a display panel, too.
    Kevin Caron has some 1/4" aluminum plate on the workbench, so it's time to fire up the welder! The metal is aluminum, so it's already set on AC. It's also set on 4T for the finger control. Pulse is off. He turns up the amperage to the max, 225 amps - that ought to work on 1/2" aluminum plate.
    Kevin Caron puts on his welding safety gear, goes to his workbench and fires up the AHP AlphaTIG 225Xi welder.
    After welding, he shows the results. The metal was a little cold to begin. Then Kevin Caron started feeding more. At the end a little crater formed - oops!
    This welder has a nice little arc that's easy to initiate. It's easy to control.
    "What the heck?" says Kevin Caron. "Let's [weld] some steel." He goes to the control panel's mode button and selects DC TIG. Pulse is off. He sets the amperage at around 130 for the 1/8" steel he is going to weld because it is sitting on a 1" steel table top. All the other settings can stay where they are. Kevin Caron is ready to get back to welding and dabbing, dabbing, dabbing ....
    The weld looked really nice at the top, then some air came through the open door, causing a crater at the very end of the weld.
    It's a nice, nice machine. Easy to set up, easy to run and quiet enough that you can listen to the radio while welding. Kevin Caron will try out the stick welding someday to see how it works, too.
    For comparison sake, Kevin Caron shows the brand new AHP AlphaTIG 225Xi and the brand new AHP AlphaTIG 203Xi. The biggest difference between the two machines is that the AHP AlphaTIG 225Xi is an entirely analog machine while the AHP AlphaTIG 203Xi is an entirely digital machine. Pricewise, the AlphaTIG 225Xi is preselling right now for $750. After they ship on May 3rd the price will eventually jump to $950. So order quickly! The price is really just stupidly low on both of these machines.
    Kevin Caron appreciates you watching. Please reach up and click that notification bell to find out about more free how to videos and product reviews before you head to www.kevincaron.com to see his amazing sculpture.

    Thanks for the video... im shopping for an AC/DC machine and this 225xi keeps coming along with the 203... I think i like the analog controls more on the 225 (based on my experience with an all digital miller mig machine and my current analog TIG). Seems like AHP is the best bang for buck. Seriously thinking about pulling the trigger on one and using it for all the fab work I do with my son for FFA and around our farm. Honestly thinking about restarting my youtube channel to post videos of it.

    Thanks for all your videos Kevin and particularly the 225xi and the 203xi because I'm upgrading to an AC capable welder. I really prefer the reliability/redundancy achieved with the 225xi's calibrated rotary nobs in case of a possible digital display failure after 3 years. I read and printed everything I could find on the AHP website for comparing these two machines, and was left with a few questions. 1. Are both machines transformer based? 2. Comparing the descriptions and features from the AHP website it looked as if the 225xi has a slightly wider range of a few feature adjustments. Did you find a feature or anything you can adjust with the 203xi (other than rapid set) that you can not do or adjust with the 225xi? 4. At one point in the 203xi video I believe you used the term buttery smooth after welding. Did you get the same buttery smooth feel with the 225xi? Sorry for getting windy but they both look like great machines Kevin. Thanks again.

      Thanks for watching and posting Jerry. Always nice to hear for the other end of the internet. Both of these machines are inverter based. So low power draw and less heat to deal with . Also much lighter so easier to move around the shop. Keeping in mind that the 203xi in my video is a prototype it had less then what the production machines will have on them. I have not seen one of the production machines so I can't talk about how they are set up now. Both machines seem to weld about the same, just the 225 has a little more power than the 203. If I had to pick one I think I would go with the 225 just to have a little more power.

    Great video. Looking at buying my first tig machine. Been welding with mig and arc for years at home. Lincoln welder has never failed me. Tig would be new to me. Trying to choose between the 225xi and 203xi. I am unfamiliar with settings for tig, reason considering the 203xi, not sure how had it is to learn to set up manually. Which machine would you recommend?

      Their webpage description are wrong so don't rely on that. I love AHP, but their website and the info contained on it is horrible. From what I can see it looks like it's just a digital vs analog approach to settings plus some extra amperage. I'd personally wait for Kevin's video. Here is another video on the 203 by weld.com th-cam.com/video/RRwegGHavgM/w-d-xo.html

    • @KevincaronSculpture
      @KevincaronSculpture  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Digital versus analog really. Like neoc03 said, just a little more power. About the same size on the cart between the two as well. If you don't "need" the extra power then I would stay with the 203.

    • @KevincaronSculpture
      @KevincaronSculpture  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The AHP is an awesome hobbyist machine. The EVERLAST line is more towards a production machine. I would stand the Everlast 275 lightning against the red or blue machines any time.

    I've been wondering if it's possible to run scratch start Tig on these machines? I know it's possible to run scratch start in stick mode on Millers, and Lincolns (even though they have a scratch start mode) but I have no idea if it also works on IGBT inverter machines. Anyone happen to know?

    Price?

  • @AndrewBrowner
    @AndrewBrowner 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    i always get excited for the AHP products, they look well made with good features for an affordable price.. but theres always let downs and issues before i can buy one
    stock being the biggest issue, for as many years as ive been welding (bout 6 or 7) theyve never had any stock everythings always out of stock permanently it seems, covid has only increased this issue
    there doesnt seem to be any warranty support especially for canadians.. and beyond that i dont have much faith in their products anymore based off of their issues with their website and stocking issues, theres constant issues on their website and it seems they cant even take away the ability for people to order discontinued or out of stock items all they can do is add text asking you not to order them as they dont have any to ship.. if they cant make a website how can they make a multiprocess welder full of circuit boards and logic thats going to last thousands of heat cycles and uses without failure
    lastly their leads seem to be horrific.. a 6ft ground lead?! i cant imagine using that for anything i do, working on cars and trailers among other larger products you want to be able to wheel the welder around without needing to move and grind spots for the ground clamp every 3 minutes.. theres no reason they cant provide 20ft leads with all their machines, and make the guage and clamps more than adequate for the amperage, nothing worse than ground leads that melt to nothing and mig guns that jam solid from heat meanwhile the machine itself is ice cold

    • @KevincaronSculpture
      @KevincaronSculpture  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have been told it is a fine dance between making the machine you want and making the machine everyone will buy. Yes, longer, heavier leads are easy to do. But copper cost money and you will have to pay for that lead. Heavier components are easy to come by and install. But they cost more so guess who gets to pay for them. Like every young company they are finding their way and creating their market.

    • @AndrewBrowner
      @AndrewBrowner 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KevincaronSculpture for sure, keeping stock seems to be their biggest issue so they must be moving product.. i think almost all machines are built plenty stout but everyone cheaps out on leads and theyre the first thing to fail and the part that you handle the most and get the most bang for buck as far as upgrades go
      a company making hundreds of thousands of units gets a deal on leads/copper that we couldnt imagine, it doesnt go through 17 middle men each with a markup im sure they get it for under 20% of what me or you would pay at a local welding supply not to mention we'd be paying for the smaller leads that fail in a month and then paying again for the bigger ones with all the markups
      obviously theres a cost to everthing but i feel improving leads is an easy home run for any welding manufacturer.. duty cycle seems to be more than covered if anything they could reduce materials inside the machine as ive pushed all the machines ive had as hard as i physically can at times like max amps rod after rod after rod, or just burning wire for 10 minutes straight going through 6lbs wire in non stop.. machine is always ice cold never even seen a temp light on any of my machines.. leads are always smoking locking up the wire feed, melting my gloves into shrivelled leather ect
      no ill will, just laying out some thoughts and opinions
