  • What if I told you there was a DOS incompatible platform that lasted for 2+ decades over in Japan, sold 18 million, is virtually unknown in the west (except for obscure factory controllers), and was a popular platform to the point of having many influential games over there? It exists and it's called the NEC PC-9801.

Look forward to it, enjoy your in depth videos full of information. The oddball computers that came out of Japan (pc-98 included but also MSX, x68000, and the weird fujitsu stuff like FM TOWNS), are super unique and interesting. It's like they had a parallel universe of computers until Windows adoption destroyed everything and killed all uniqueness.

the MSX is unique because it was big in Europe too.

    自分が初めて手に入れたPCがPC-9801でした。高校生の頃、親に買ってもらいました。
    2023年の今、この日本ローカルのレトロマシンを触ってくれて嬉しい限りです。

An interesting fun fact: in the former GDR there war a computer, the Robotron BIC A5105, which uses a reverse engineered GDC chip, called as the U82720, but the color modes were mostly not used on these 8-bit machines.
BIC stands for the german word "Bildungscomputer", which means: educational computer, the GDR had avoid some english words for their products, if necessary, so some words on bootlegged software were translated to the german and/or russian names. English was the language of the enemy at that time of the cold war.

I've been looking at NEC computers/laptops on eBay, and some of them have either Windows 95 or Windows 98 installed and the question that comes up, looking at the photos of say the different ports, I'm thinking "If the thing has Windows 98 installed, then why doesn't the computer have USB ports, and why are they missing?".

I only learned about this because of _16bit Sensation ._
That said, you should really learn about reducing monitor flicker by adjusting your camera settings accordingly.

Around 21:00 when you mention about booting right when it senses the floppy disk without user interaction, one possible reason of that design is because the PC-98s were initially thought as industrial machines. The people who use these computers in a factory might not have the keyboard lying around, or simply they want to turn on the computer and leave, and the computer will boot directly to whatever software without the need of confirmation.

Fun fact: some of PC-9821 and all of former PC-9801 series have ROM-BASIC.

There was another computer made by Sharp known as the X68000. It was much more powerful than the PC-98 at the time, but it couldn't gain a foothold in the market due to a lack of software which could compete. In some respects, it was like a Japanese Amiga.

literally arcade grade hardware in a computer, but they were SUPER expensive at the time from what I remember.

The X68000 is overrated. I have one, but I acquired recently a PC-98 off eBay that was already prepared with everything, including keyboard, mouse, fully refurbed, with modern CF-Card interface and FM sound board integrated, and everything for a fraction of the price of an "low end" X68000. And guess what, the PC-98 game library is fantastic, the graphics beautiful, the FM-sound excellent and the computer is easy to mod and repair in case you need it. If I could choose one or the other, I would definitely choose the PC-98 since the price is way cheaper, the quality of games is similar and the fun I get out of it is much, much better.

@@kobe3576 They're different machines entirely IMO. The PC-98 has far more games, but the x68k has a lot of unique or better versions of games.
IMO it's still a better buy than a FM Towns given the CD drive issue.

X68000 has very limited of hardwares, despite it runs arcade grade games, the software on X68K isn't as outstanding as games, the operating system barely has colours and doesn't support multitasking

I've been searching for days, but I can't seem to find good answers. I'm wondering how (from a coding perspective), the NEC PC-98 got the graphics and cutscenes into the games. What file format are the images? .png, .jpeg (I jest), and what function of basic allows the image to be displayed? If you happend to know, please share. Thanks :)

      Mag files:
      mooncore.eu/bunny/txt/makichan.htm
Multipaint was used, along with an RS-232 scanner to digitize images or draw images.

Do you know about the 98 note at all? I feel the desktop would be too large and expensive to import it from Japan even through Yahoo auctions and figured the 98 note would be cheaper. Any chance you would know which PC-9821 notes to stay away from?

I have a 9821Nr15, you want one with good plastics/hinges.
I'd buy a Nr or Nw if you pull the battery, but make sure the plastics are good, the laptop powers on and displays the boot floppy screen, and also adapters for the serial/parallel port given that they use weird ports like the Powerbooks did.
