Ubuntu 24.04 Beta Review: THE WORST INSTALLER EVER
Ubuntu 24.04 is the first version of Ubuntu I've ever used where the installer is straight up broken. Which is funny because this used to be the OS I installed for old people who were tired of the slowness of Windows 10/11 on a spinning disk..

NEC PC-9821Nr15: A PC-98 Laptop?!?!? (with some games)
มุมมอง 1.1K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
In the 90s NEC made quite a few PC-98 laptops to the point there's a YAJ category for them. The PC-9821Nr15 is one such model prized by gamers due to it's inclusion of an FM sound chip, a rarity for PC-98 computers. Most PC-98 laptops were intended as business computers, and as a result lacked this functionality common on western PC laptops prized for DOS games. However, as with all 90s laptops...

Using the NEC PC-IN502 (early PC-9801 flatbed scanner) with vintage art software!
มุมมอง 3989 หลายเดือนก่อน
So I finally got the PC-IN502 working (needed a null modem cable) and I found out this scanner works with some PC-98 era art software. I tested the scanner with MultiPaint System and KID98. This was one tool used to make Japanese computer games in the 1980s and 90s, however as time went on many artists went on to use higher quality scanners like the Epson GT-6000 (which was sold worldwide).
The NEC PC-IN502: A 1986 RS-232 Flatbed Scanner (and attempting to get it working)
มุมมอง 35410 หลายเดือนก่อน
I picked up this NEC PC-IN502 scanner from Japan, but unfortunately I've been unable to get this thing to communicate with my PC-98. I've verified the cable and port are good, and I am looking for DIP switch information. The PC-IN502 came out in 1986 or so, and was designed for the NEC PC-98 and PC-88, however it was also used as a scanner by those who owned other computers including the Sharp ...

The Epson PC-486GR+: An Epson PC-9801 clone!
มุมมอง 458ปีที่แล้ว
Around 1987, Epson released the PC-286 series, a clone of the NEC PC-9801 series. After a lawsuit with NEC that involved Epson paying NEC money for illegally copying their BIOS but being allowed to sell a version of the machine with a clean room version of the BIOS, Epson would go on to capture a decent share of the Japanese computer market. Nobody else dared to clone the PC-98, leading to Epso...

the SPARC architecture was really efficient for big load, because it was having a way to manage process switching with multiple set of registers, and allow a far lower cost of context switch. it made them able to run multiple processes far more efficently than Intel processor at least. Something which was lost, unfortunately.

The DVD in this and any server is so you can install an os! And any extra software! Unless you're good at remote installs, which can be terribly slow( according to dell),maybe. Redhat has a boot script to do thus, windows as well, but the DVD is the fastest way,so that's why the purchaser of the machine ordered it,or ibm built it this way! And this is old info!

Still got 2 SPARC laptops and a T5 rack server that I lucked out on and was able to get Linux running on it with very little Googling thenks to really intuitive firmware console. Intel may have prevailed but x86 servers and their ugly BIOS screens such compared to consoles with built in help and scripting functionality.

An amazing camera that offers so many possibilities and yet so easy and intuitive to use. I have heard that Minolta was not a popular brand among professional photographers, despite being technologically advanced.. All the same, I am not sure that it is entirely fair to say that it is, or was, an "underrated" camera. Thomas Maschke's book about the camera and its use: "Minolta Dynax 7" is great but it only exists in German. I so wish someone would translate it to English.

Got one of these to, today I finally got all the drivers working. Absolute nightmare to setup this system correctly. If I hadn't found a random very hidden IBM FTP server with this nightmare of a serial driver i'd never have figured it out. Couple of fun facts from that FTP repo, the serial driver tagged for dos is actually a Windows XP driver. Neither that one or the XP one is signed, instead it trashes your installation completely if you install it. The "DOS" one however comes with a readme that tells you that you have to disable driver verification prompts before installing the driver. Doing that instead of agreeing to them during the setup prompts magically fixes the issue and now the serial stuff works. Why not built in Serial support that just works like on any other motherboard? No clue. While you have the XX3, I have the XX4. I see that you have the intel graphics driver installed, on mine thats another nightmare scenario. The official drivers out of any of them I tried in the past none of them worked, but turns out there is this minimal unsigned (Of course, none of the official drivers are signed on a cashier PC who would want to do that?) driver that only works on this machine that does work, but the general performance isn't better than the windows built in driver and its also slightly less stable so I just decided not to. Finally brings me to the touch screen driver, I see you have the ELO driver installed which works. Does it come with that on that FTP site? Of course not! They ship it with a 3M MicroTouch driver that doesn't work at all. Luckily the newer ELO driver I found is backwards compatible and that one does work fine. Network / chipset drivers? Nah why would you put those on the FTP site to download them all nobody needs those right? But the official drivers for those do work. So now I finally got this thing up and running, mine doesn't have a speaker although I do have the sound driver for it mine lacks a soundcard so thats no use. Would have been fun if mine had it. After years of trying I can now finally say that the SurePOS that I was given years ago at an old workplace (Only the screen, no other cashier parts) is fully up and running with every driver. Wasn't easy and if I didn't discover that random old FTP server i'd never have found the serial driver that makes everything else work correctly.

Wow Solaris I never know that you can install on these NT and even Linux with some hacking yep. Also if you want to get something completely up to date on this old junk hardware your only choice is NetBSD. You can rebuild the packages to this arch from pkgsrc however running new things like firefox and whatnot is forgettable even if they manage to start up with so small amount of ram they will segfault to pieces. I can see some use case there like maybe running a new version of nginx apache mini dns server etc but then again a raspberry pi 5 beats this to the punch 10 times so what's the point... This is why I prefer retro OSes for retro machines, along with all their bugs and shortcomings, that is the real fun

21:18 About that... Well, that's because NTLDR on x86 PCs is just a small ARC emulator shim which goes on top of BIOS plus the normal osloader executable, the ARC boot loader which is found in RISC versions of windows, and which is also used in x86 as well. In fact, you can strip the small ARC emulation from the NTLDR, and the rest of the binary will load as a standard PE (native) NT executable on any disassembler. And you can find these files in the Windows NT, 2000 and XP CDs unfused as well (osloader and startrom). This way they can keep the loader code almost the same for every compilable platform they supported (and support).
