The Ice type's biggest issue is the fact that they keep giving it to slow bulky Pokemon.
Basically every time they make a fast offensive Ice type it is an immediate threat, because as it turns out giving the glass cannon type to some glass cannon Pokemon actually works, someone please tell Gamefreak.

Also, it could so easily resist some combination of bug, flying, grass and water, as well as ground and dragon (though more because it bets them then any clear logical reason to resist)

They used to give it to slow mons, these last gens where pretty good when it comes to offensive ice types, G Darmanitan, Chien Pao, Iron Bundle, Baxcalibur, Cetitan are all ofensive ice types that want to move first. Even the Calyrex Ice form wants to move first in trick room.
With the exception of Mr Rime and H Avalugg all modern ice types are offensive. Even the lowtier ones like Eiscue or Frosmoth focus on offense

It makes sense on the surface, when you think of Ice, you're likely to think of glaciers, and those aren't really known for hitting hard or moving fast- it only starts to fall apart when you look at how the ice type actually functions as a type, as opposed to as a theme. And yeah, mechanically, ice wants fast and offensive, but this, still feels very at odds with it's theming to me.
Edit: For everyone wondering, I _was_ already agonizing about just saying the same thing twice when I was typing this comment.

Honestly they should just make Ice resist Ground and Dragon probably. Or Ground and... something. Flying? I don't want to hit grass types even more, they don deserve it. Water maybe? So they resist eachother.

Let's introduce Physics and make the only super effective types against it bug and ghost, both of which being very limited and frail and having no access to good moves to actually hit super effectively."
Gen 2: "Ok... So we made a mistake with psychic... We'll fix the bug/ghost types to actually hit them and we're gonna introduce dark to counter balance it and it definitely won't become a new meta threat because we got all these frail Fighting types to totally keep them in check. Also let's throw in a bunch of good dark hybrids while we're baking. Ok we can't just add _one_ powerful type... How about something to counter Poison? You know that type that has like 3 pure Pokemon in it. Steel. You know what? Immune to Poison. We got to future proof the poison meta now that we're 100% balancing Physics. And let's make Steel randomly weak to... Oh, let's say fire. And Ground? Sure. Oh and Fighting, of course. There, balanced."
Gen 3-5: _random bullshit hybrid types go_
Gen 6: "Hearing a lot of people complaining about those two types we added in Gen 2... So Fairy will be involced with those two. Uh... Bah, we'll also make it immune to Dragon. Totally balanced now."

Technically they /made/ ice type Pokemon very good offenively, and quite good defensively.
When they made it, Ice's defensive profile was:
Resist Ice? Really good, 90% accurate Blizzard was everywhere.
Immune to secondary effect freeze from ice moves? Really good, freeze was the most devastating secondary effect, and most commonly came from ice moves.
Weak to Rock. Moderately bad weakness, but one that can be played around given that the main rock move users were slow, low special, rock/grounds which made them in turn also weak to ice.
Weak to Fighting? Meh, nothing really uses fighting moves.
Weak to Fire? Meh, fire is used sparingly because it risks unfreezing if the opponent switches a frozen pokemon into it.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the Physical/Special split, that's the main reason Regice (and Regirock) fell off a cliff and went from OU to NU in a single generation, its highly specialized defensive stats worked much better in an environment where you could guarantee most of your weaknesses would only be hitting one side. Pre-Split Regice was basically an AV pokemon 3 generations before AV was added, the insane special bulk let you reliably switch in on and check a lot of threats with BoltBeam or Explosion.

  • @aliesterus1.023
    @aliesterus1.023 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +53

1:12 Explosion in older generations halved the defense of the target, so it used to effectively deal 500 damage, making that low base attack not as much of an issue. Regice even saw a decent amount of play in ADV formats. Unfortunately for it, it doesn't last past ADV because of the numerous changes that piled up throughout the generations after, and it never changed to move with the times.
Basically, it's a relic of an age long since passed. Kind of appropriate for a Pokemon that represents the Ice Age, but kinda sad.

You have to remember when Gen3 came out we were still coming out of "being frozen is instadeath" in Gen1 and "being frozen is instadeath unless you're lucky" in Gen2. A Pokemon with Ice Beam that sat on the field a long time was very dangerous. They might have even had Sheer Cold on it originally and cut it out of fear it would be OP (Lock-On is there so...). Perhaps it was designed before the 20% thaw was decided on for Gen3, or they just didn't anticipate how hard that nerf would hit it. This was also the same time as they introduced Hail so they may have anticipated Hail stall was going to be a thing, hence the synergy with Ice Body and Amnesia/Curse/Ancientpower in the natural moveset to dig in.

So, one of the things that these type of videos always miss is that not only did Choice Specs not exist in ADV, almost every single one of Regice weaknesses was a physical one. While not as good as resistances that's still a decent profile with ADV's lower power.
From what I understand Regice back then was strong enough to still take some stray Fire Moves when pokemons used Hidden Power and Elemental punches for coverage,
I believe Regice still obviously folded to fighting type attacks, but that gen we were dealing with Brick Break most of the time, not the Close Combat that every single physical attacker gets these days. Steel was a low profile attacking type back then, and Rock was also still using the lower BP Rock slide. The bulky ice type and the bulky pokemon without immediate recovery is just a design that seems to have not aged well with the rising strength of metagames.

They need an Ice type version of spikes where the Pokémon places sharp icicles on the ground. Non Ice types entering battle, take damage and their speed is lowered by one stage.

Calm mind + stored power could be quite the threat. Also chilly reception and/or aurora veil would give it some utility. If freeze was frostbite again and it had a chill-o-wisp option that would be huge. With the defense boost from snow it's be an unbreakable wall

I feel like Ice should resist Grass. Grass is the defacto "wood" type and when you freeze Sawdust it winds up with a structural density about half as strong as steel.

I thought maybe it should resist Water seeing as Ice is frozen water and the two sort of coexist in the poles; and it'd help slow down Water spam (like Iron Bundle and Palafin) and give Ice a nice resistance to a common attacking type.

I will NOT tolerate this Regice slander! Rock Polish WP Regice is REALLY funny even in OU! Tbolt Icebeam Focus Blast (or blizzard and thunder if you are feeling quite saucy, or zap cannon if even saucier) makes for the perfect coverage! It's biggest weakness is mainly priority moves, as it is weak to bullet punch from scizors and mach punches from bulky fighting types. It's great SpDef is PERFECT for this, as it can eat a flamethrower for 30-50% from most pokemon and basically shell smash! I have it on one of my most fun (and probably stupid) teams, a gravity centered team where it has the stronger options. Regice is no avalugg, but they are kind nonetheless!

During the Z move fad I made a very fun and surprisingly effective regice who ran z gravity, blizzard, zap cannon, and focus blast. Z gravity boosts the users special attack and multiplies accuracy by 5/3, so Zap cannon became 83% accurate (not great, but less accurate moves have been run in competitive) and focus blast becomes 116% accurate! Pretty good for a pair of 120 base power moves. Also ran blizzard over ice beam since it also becomes 116% accurate and deals more damage. I of course debated running thunder instead of zap cannon to match all the accuracies, but I found more success with zap cannon, oddly enough. I do think the strategy worked better in doubles with someone to give regice an actual item, though, as running psychium z for that is... not ideal in singles. Still got some surprise wins and KOs with it in singles, though.

I found amusing that Rock and Ice types are more effective on offense than defense, yet most of their Pokémon are slow and bulky. Ice-type managed to break the curse by having a few glasscanon, but it doesn't solve Regice and Regirock. What are the options? I don't know, but here a few of them:
*Option 1:* Give them a recovery moves. It could be *Recover.* After all, Garganacl is a 100 HP, 130 Defense and 90 Sp. Def. with 100 in Attack, while Regirock is a 80 HP, 200 Defense and 100 Sp. Def with 100 in Attack too. Sure, Regirock has better stats, but Salt Cure is what makes Garganacl, way better than Toxic.
*Option 1.5:* I would have said: give Body Press to Regirock!
It already has it. Should we introduce a Special counter-part to Body Press like "Mind Shine" (a Psychic-type moves) or "Slimy Slam" (a Poison-type moves), and give it to Regice?
*Option 2:* Introduce a new ability that would reduces their weaknesses. It could replace their hidden abilities. Here an example: *Unbreakable:* _The Pokémon solidifies its mineral body, which halves the damage taken from Fighting- and Steel-type moves._ Here, Regirock is only weak to Grass, Water and Ground, while Regice is only weak to Fire and Rock.
*Option 3:* Change the type-chart. I think a few weaknesses should be removed in order to fix dual-types with 2 dual weaknesses. Such as:
    - Makes Ice neutral to Fighting-type moves. It would solve Ice/Steel (Alolan Sandslash) and Ice/Rock (Aurorus).
    - Makes Rock neutral to Ground-type moves. It would solve Rock/Steel (Probopass) and Rock/Fire (Magcargo)
I would even throw a Ground resistance to Ice-type in the mix, in order to add a new hard-counter to Ground.
*Option 4:* Redesign the legendary trio, by giving a new lore that would make them eligible to a lot more moves. For example, the ability to shapeshift: imagine Regice being able to liquefy like Vaporeon. It would justify the addition of many Water-type moves (currently almost none), and many shapeshifting moves (like Acid Armor). Regirock could do the same with Lava.

I do think its at least decent in doubles with snow, when you have snow and aurora viel up even on the physical side ots ridiculously bulky with hp investment. With ice body and leftovers its also healing quite a bit per turn. Its not great or even that good but its something especially for one of my favorite pokemon of all time.

regice at least has the excuse of actually being very good when it was made back in 2002. frosmoth is a SLOW ICE/BUG type that could not even be saved by quiver dance. it was released in 2019.
you should make a video on the fact game freak released a woefully understatted pure bug type in 2022, which i can only try to explain by the fact it's on route 1, yet you can also find flamigo on route 1.

  • @KyoryuDiabolos

I’ve said this in several videos covering the weaknesses of the ice type but they should give it resistances similar to rock because it’s also solid but with some changes. Have it resist flying, bug, normal, ground, electric and ice (it does already). My logic for ground and electric is that moves like earthquake and thunderbolt are common coverage moves and with it resisting the moves, bulkier ice types can take the hits better or switch in predicting it and it differentiates it from the rock type. As for electric it has to do with how chemistry works and that with ice being frozen water, electricity can’t travel through it as easily compared to it’s liquid form so it’s an irl resistance to conductivity. Hail did get changed to snow and giving ice types a 50% defense boost while it’s active so that’s one step in the right direction at least.

atleast it has the potential to be by far the strongest pokemon in gen 1
with a monstrous special of 200 + amnesia + blizzard makes it an absolutely insane threat
couple this with it's ice typing giving it weaknesses that are a total non issue for an ice resist that is very welcome ontop of being immune to freeze
i struggle to think of a single other pokemon who'd beat it if dropped into the meta of gen 1
    so, there's that
