I likes them ngl. Platinum was my first game and even with the content drops I still liked them. Battle frontier being dropped sucks but battle tower is still fun. Underground does help the dex variety and the difficulty being inconsistent is technically a bad thing but I enjoyed the challenge.
On the topic of platinum’s story line, that was never going to return. They are Diamond and pearl remakes and as a result I’d say their responsibility was to improve dp. In that regard they kinda succeeded, minus Pokémon variety.
Overall I’d say Bdsp is not as terrible as everyone says. Is it the best, no, but it is certainly not the worst and is not bad.

No what happen was ILCA developing concets that was more akin to an 3d open sandbox like skyrim and Zelda Breath of Wild for BDSP like what we had in legends but in a mondern sinnoh setting. There probably would of been overworld battle with all the gen 8 mechanics more akin to scarlet and violate unlike the bare bones system in legend. But with Junichi Masuda and other higher ups at GF's and the pokemon company's terrable management & leadership is what lead to the rushed cutcorner version of Diamand& Pearl.
The cuts were so bad that items were missing, features from the original gutted out like the contest being turn into a dance minigame with the contest pokemon move showoffs like from gen3 being removed, alot secret bases features being cutdown to an art gallery, barely any additions from platinum with no battle frontier, nor any new areas outside of the underground, and finally just a copy and paste of the same story with no changes like Oras had. On top of that PokemonDex Cuts doesnt help it ethier, with almost half the pokedex missing, even region varients were not included.
BDSP would be no different than that of crappy rom hack of DP that only adds battle system update to gen 8, newer generation moves and lacking later generation pokemon. As well as having crappy scripting were it would break both contest and secret bases.

It seems that the reasons most people have for not liking BDSP lean heavily on the petty side. I was very unhappy with ORAS because I was very attached to Emerald as it was my first Pokemon adventure, and ORAS changed too much of it. I was cheated out of being able to play platinum when it came out because my mom accidentally bought a shoddy bootleg on Amazon by mistake and after I got to Jubilife the game crashed and then every time I forced it into my DS (The cartridge had a huge bulge which, when opened, revealed a large chunk of what looked like tar) it would crash the system menu running the risk of bricking it.
I never got to experience Gen 4 and I believe all the changes made to diamond and pearl are positive ones. The graphics are not bad at all, when they said they were making faithful remakes, they meant it. People just hate on these games because they wanted them to play like Sword and Shield, yknow, modern. But as someone who grew up on Emerald, who was cheated out of Platinum, and didn't like ORAS all that much, I enjoyed my time with these remakes, and now I'm doing a second playthrough in 2024 and still enjoying myself. BDSP isn't bad, you're all just mean.

4 words. Blame The Pokemon Company. They were responsible for the game being rushed. Originally ILCA wanted to have an open worldish overworld among other stuff according to their proof of concept of the games, but despite not working on them directly, Masuda had to tell the devs to rush it.
The proof of ILCA is not being as incompetent as people think is them working on games like Ace Combat 7, Neir Automata, and One Piece Odyssey Adventure. I genuinely cannot deal with the fact that this 'remake' turned out the way it did. It has forever tainted not only Sinnoh's legacy, but the Pokémon franchise itself past, present and future in my eyes. This game is why I go into every new Pokémon game expecting to hate it. This game is why I despise those who would defend the Pokémon Company and/or GameFreak from well-deserved criticism.
I despise BDSP... because it is symbolic/emblematic of everything about the Pokémon franchise that has been forever lost, forever discarded in the wake of the Pokémon Company's insatiable greed. It is, without hyperbole, the most insulting, most spirit-breaking video game I have ever seen, let alone played. Scarlet & Violet may be a broken mess, but at least it's not as blatantly, as unapologetically insulting as BDSP.

There should have been way more Hisui connections in BDSP and if you had save data for Legends Arceus the Hisuian Pokémon should have been catchable somewhere in BDSP. Or at least allowed them to be transferable. Not having the Hisui Pokemon in BDSP cause the fan base to get confused and think these Pokemon went extinct when it was confirmed they are not. The chibi art style wasn’t too bad, but the issue was that many fans were expecting something more like ORAS did so fans were ready to experience Sinnoh in the engine of SwSh. BDSP with more Pokemon and more content would have made the game so many times better.

That's what I call revisionist history. I grew up through Gen 1 to 4, and nobody cared about the stories back in the day. Pokemon isn't a franchise that became successful for its storytelling.
It took until Gen 5 before we actually got a good story (by Pokemon standards), and then years later, Gen 5 kids grew up and decided that storytelling did matter. Which retroactively brought hate to the previous gens even though Gen 5 would have never existed without the success of the previous gens. I guarantee you that nobody hated DP until years later.

    • @intergalactic92
      @intergalactic92 ปีที่แล้ว

@@jinkun2629there is a lot of rewriting of history going on at the moment. Just look at the vitriol Gen 2 (and by extension Johto) is suddenly getting. Suddenly being a sequel/expansion on Kanto is a bad thing, despite that being the thing that made it popular in the first place.
We've all forgotten how much hate Gen 3 got when it first came out. People didn’t like the national dex cut in Gen 8? We already had one of those when Ruby and Sapphire came out. They completely severed all ties to the first 2 gens, and people hated it.
Diamond and Pearl were not universally hated. There was a, "yeah Platinum is better" moment, but that was the same for Emerald compared to Ruby and Sapphire. Platinum built on what had already been done well in Diamond and Pearl. In fact I unironically prefer Diamond over Platinum (I recognise that Platinum is better technically but there are certain changes which makes key plot moments less fun for me).
There is an element of dissatisfaction with ORAS similar to some of the backlash to BDSP. There is a regression in enemy teams to Ruby/Sapphire teams (which were always inferior to Emerald's), a loss in the original Emerald plot line with both evil teams causing problems across Hoenn. This was lost in remaining loyal to Ruby and Sapphire. The same thing happened with BDSP, the difference is that ORAS makes up for it with overall improvements, and alignment with the current gens graphics and mechanics. BDSP does neither of these things. The lack of platinum is only one of many issues.

The Delta Episode in ORAS was an enhancement from Emerald with the ability to catch Rayquaza plus they added for the first time ever the ability to find & catch Deoxys officially without events. Agreed, BDSP was my first main series Pokemon game that I’d played since USUM, and while it certainly doesn’t hold up as a remake when compared to others like HGSS and ORAS, it was a great first Pokémon game on the switch after a few years of not playing and since Pearl was my first ever game I easily racked up 150+ hours on it. I really appreciated the fact that in theory, as long as you know someone with the opposite version you could complete the National dex and there were some fantastic additions such as the Grand Underground. Of course now that I’ve played PLA all of my brain cells have been going there ever since, but by no means were they bad

I haven't played it myself because of how much hate it was getting, but really, it sounds like people were just too greedy with what they wanted. All it really needs to be is modernized with QoL enhancements, which from the sounds of it, that's what it is. I really don't want a bunch of extra flair, I just want to relive Diamond without the slog of 2006 gameplay.

In terms of platinum’s content, I heard ILCA WANTED to include a ton of platinum content and kept getting shot down by Game Freak. They were under strict orders to make a remaster, not a remake. And of Diamond and Pearl, not platinum.
It was the first time a mainline game was outsourced, so Game Freak didn’t want them taking creative liberties.
Personally I also see Legends Arceus as the actual gen 4 remake. To me they were probably developing Legends and realized it’s far too different than Diamond and Pearl that it’s not even recognizable as their remake. So the solution was to make a paired release with a faithful remaster.
That’s what I think happened though myself.

Gen 4 was my first pokemon game. I was about 6 or 7 when I got it. I have a huge amount of nostalgia for this game, and it's disappointing to see how poor the remake was treated.
The 3ds and Ds had limitations, so the table top like design was excusable. But for hardware that can run breath of the wild and mario Odyssey, I expected a more realistic approach rather than the awful chibi design.

My conspiracy is that they attempted to make a full open world modern style Diamond and Pearl, but couldn't make the technology work, work instead converted that into Legends Arceus, but were still contracted to make them so ILCA had to throw something together last minute. There's a thing when covering a song in music, where you can generally do one of two things, make it completely your own or make it mirror the original, any attempts to do an inbetween fails and ILCA went for the "mirror the original" take but it's just not what anyone actually wanted.

  • @LinkNinjaMaster

Chibi is fine, but it was not excecuted well either. The models don't look as charmig as something like Link's Awakening remake, they just ended up looking weird. This was compounded with big closeups that showed how the chibis barely emoted at all. Chibis worked on the DS because our brains filled in the blanks, but on the Switch we can plainly see that when pepole talk to each other, they don't REALLY talk, just they barely move and emote. It feels artificial.
The last negative point about the chibis is that, instead of creating cutscenes with realistic proportions, you know, like ORAS did, no, they just used the in-game engine to make them and they look bad lol.

Well, I think Legends Arceus was in fact the real Sinnoh remake. It checked all the boxes of the 'great remake' with different storyline on a familiar region, new forms for the cover legendaries, new features, etc.
But I feel PLA was such a massive departure in terms of gameplay. So BDSP were pushed (last minute decision? Due to the massive demand for Sinnoh anniversary title) to be the complementary titles, so that new players will understand the difference between the two. In a way, PLA IS the Platinum for BDSP's original Diamond and Pearl. That's why BDSP didn't include Platinum's content.

Not everything has to be a flippin open world game. It feels like the genre is getting muddied now, with every classic game trying to delve in open world. Not to say the newer games shouldnt be. As for BDSP, yeah fully agree that it was likely not meant to be the real remake for Gen 4. It was more of a remaster than a remake, and even compared to FRLG, where the Gen they were launched in didn't really have any major gimmick, BDSP still felt even more lacking than them.

Honestly, they should've just made solid Sinnoh remakes of Diamond and Pearl and left the experimental "journey to the past" Breath of the Wild rip-offs to Scarlet and Violet. Sinnoh was done dirty by getting _two_ half-assed games, instead of one actual _good_ game. (Well, three if you count BD and SP as two different games, but you know what I mean.)

Honestly, I was excited at the first trailer for BDSP when I saw the chibis. I thought “Pokemon was so much better with chibi models!” Mainly referring to gens 1-5. But gens 6 and 7 were pretty good too. It seemed like a lot of corners were cut and issues arose once the games tried going with a more true-to-size feel (gens 8 and 9).
When I saw that Pokemon following us would be back, I felt validated. Like “This is why chibis were the right choice! They make things easier to program and will allow for improvements in other aspects of the game that people actually care about!”
And then… The games came out. First day patched were needed, the in game experience was too much, the affection stat made things too easy, they butchered contests, a lot of aspects from Platinum weren’t included, and so forth and so on. I wanted to believe so badly that these games were going to go back to the franchise’s roots and prioritize quality of game play over trying to look realistic. And I was so disappointed.
It sucks how 4th gen was the personal favorite for a lot of people (myself included). And 5th genners tend to be some of the most devout in the community. I hope that the inevitable remakes for that gen are much better.

Your perspective highlights the anticipation and potential disappointment that can come with the release of new Pokémon games. It's clear that you, like many fans, had certain expectations for Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, especially with the return of chibi-style graphics. It can be disheartening when a game doesn't meet those expectations, particularly for a generation as beloved as the 4th one.
Fans' attachment to specific generations and their hopes for the future are a testament to the enduring appeal of the Pokémon series. With each new release, there's a mix of excitement and apprehension. Here's hoping that future games, including remakes for the 5th generation, manage to balance nostalgia with meaningful improvements for the overall experience. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences.

The overworld style is also inconsistent with how the humans are chibis, but the Pokémon aren't, they're just their normal battle models downscaled to fit inside the grid, unlike say every Gen prior that used chibis also gave the Pokémon their chibi version to match the humans and the environment, which there's no excuse because this game has a limited dex so they didn't need to do a custom model for literally every Pokémon that existed up to that point, and shows how they went with chibis just for the sake of cutting corners by letting them easily copy paste the og overworld and grid without modifying it all that much besides an aesthetic bump, and weren't really comitted to embrace it, and by aesthetic bump I mean its just an upscale of the original's with no real improvements, all the way to even the bland forgettable locations the original had before Platinum made them not look like a bunch of recycled assets

My opion on BDSP is that they are games that aren't the worst but could be much better with small changes. Give trainers there Platinum teams, it just fits the type specialist's don't use a team made out of not their type. Add a toggle button for the in battle friendship stuff, it makes the fights too easy. Lastly the could make the story more like Platinum or they could have added postgame like in OR AS. And for so added fun mainly for the people who complain about gen 4 not having many fire types, give the player multiple different fire types throughout the game. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are NOT bad games. They're essentially direct 1 to 1 remakes of Diamond & Pearl, but with some more features added. Saying they're bad games is saying that Diamond & Pearl are bad games, which is also not the case.

While you are correct, you simply lose the argument because you can’t go backwards on a digital watch you don’t use anyways

It’s funny how Pokémon gets so much criticism. From adults. Cuz the kids they’re actually for don’t have a voice nor platform

I’m excited to get arceus once I get the chance, but I’ll see when I can get brilliant Diamond and shining Pearl though, because mods made the games even better because of the new added in stuff that makes the game way better! So I’m happy the modders were able to fix these games up the right way, especially with making some custom fights with N & Ghetsis which I was super impressed with! I’m still going to get these and legends arceus plus the scarlet and violet whenever I get the chance! I’m excited to play them!

It hit me recently that the problem with these games is that they're just 1:1 remakes of the originals, just with QoL changes. Previous remakes, ORAS, HGSS, and even Fire Red and Leaf Green were basically remade from the ground up to work with the current generation.

I think people realized just how boring Pearl and Diamond actually are and just lashed out because it was a literal copy paste of the originals with some minor additions.

You forgot to point out he worst thing in BDSP: Affection being fused with the Friendship mechanic. That alone trivializes the game and kills any reason to keep playing it.

Contrary to popular opinions, I played through this whole game with my best friend and it was extremely nostalgic and the story was consistent. I really enjoyed the experience and it really shows that if you stop thinking about what you don’t have but you focus on what there is, it is rather enjoyable.

But that’s my issue, I feel like all this game had to offer was a nostalgia trip and nothing else 🙃

The problem is that it's just a worse Platinum. For people like me that still have a 3DS and a Platinum copy, why would i waste 60 bucks on a mediocre remake that is worse than the version i already have?

The Chibi art style also was not what anyone expected, especially for a Switch game. It looked like a cheap cash-in, then when we got our hands on it, we realized it was a cheap cash-in.

What I love about ORAS is the introduction to Mega Rayquaza post game in the Delta Episode, and the whole legend and history of what happened in the past.
Also Mega Rayquaza after ORAS being my favourite legendary, how can I not love it? I always love Rayquaza but Mega Rayquaza is just to another level
