The term "El dorado" does technically translate to "The golden", yet reading it in Spanish makes sense unlike english. Golden is a descriptive state attached to the masculine term "el"

I want to congratulate you, I'm Colombian and you managed to create an extremely well-informed summary of the origin and consequences of the legend of el dorado.
A few curious facts you might be interested in:
    1) The international airport of Bogota is named after this legend its name is "El Dorado International Airport".
    2) Another piece of evidence that connects the Legend with Lake Guatavita and the Muisca peoples is the finding of a gold replica of the sacred raft that the Zipa would be loaded onto. It currently resides in the gold museum in Bogota, home of the single largest collection of pre-Columbian gold artifacts in the world.
Once again I want to congratulate you on the quality of the video and the careful explanation of our native traditions and beliefs.

Love, love, love this! My hometown Sogamoso (Suamox - Place of the sun) is home to the Templo del Sol, a very important spiritual place for the Muiscas eventually destroyed by the Spaniards. Today, a small village (with a rebuild Temple) is preserved, alongside mummies, artefacts and a lot of stuff with archeological value . Muiscas were nearly eradicated and I've never met anyone who identifies as one, but we manage to preserve as much as possible.

As an inhabitant of the area and descendant of the Muisca people, I find this information accurate in every single detail. Due to war, disease and land dispossession, the remaining Muisca slowly disappeared by mixing with the Spanish settlers. The language was lost forever (only placenames such as Chia, Bogota Suba, etc) and so their traditions. However, some years ago, some inhabitants of certain neighborhoods of Bogota did find out they were direct descendants of the old Muiscas. They are now organized as the " Muisca reservation" inside and around the capital. Thanks for putting out this piece of info in English for everyone to know a bit deeper about Colombia

As a Colombian who lives near Guatavita, this is the first accurate video about the Muiscas I've seen in all of TH-cam!!!
People don't know about this whole advanced and peaceful federation thst existed in the Altiplano! They where advanced enough to trade with tribes as far away as Panama.
Their political system was pretty peculiar but effective, the Cacique would have to be tested for corruption, selfishness and greed, if he showed to be one of these he would simply not be able to govern. So leaders had to be trained in wisdom and intelligence by their families and communities for them to be able to aspire the leadership.
Various languages where spoken in the federation and some communities had different but related gods, like it happened in Greece.
War was uncommon, they where great hunters and explorers, but, as they where peaceful, they where unprepared and unorganized. Not so many battles where fought against the Spanish because they prioritised life and peace over their federation, they surrendered and converted into Catholicism, many ended up as slaves anyways, those who didn't where tortured and killed.
While they firstly received the Europeans in a friendly way, they rapidly found out how those men converted into animals at the sight of gold and understood that they didn't came to trade. After the first battle with the Spanish many communities still showed to be friendly with them and offered them food, shelter and beverage; they where simply trying to stop the Spanish from arriving to Bacatá and kill the Zipa, and they where saving up some time for those who lived there to plan an ambush. They obviously failed to confront those bearded men who shot thunders and rode god like animals that they had never seen before...

I am Colombian (from Bogotá) and I am very happy to have seen your video. For many of us is clear that El Dorado was part of our ancestors' history. Actually the international airport in Bogotá is called "El Dorado". There is also a museum called "Museo del Oro" where you can see some of the golden artifacts that survived the colonial time.
Unfortunately, it is somehow deep in our collective subconscious, the idea that the Spanish stole "our" gold. There is a collective resentment towards them that is not really helpful for today's relations between Colombia and Spain (e.g. a Spanish Galeon full with gold "Galeón San José" was recently found close to Cartagena de Indias, there is a dispute between both countries about to whom this treasure belongs)

While no one could find the legendary city, but in 1519 an unlikely group of misfits (two men, a horse and a Nine-Banded Armadillo) set on an adventure to find the hidden city and successfully found the city of gold. During their time they made a few friends and enemy.
Which happened in the 2000 DreamWorks Animation film 1:25 "The Road to El Dorado".

I do not know why I have not found this channel earlier. I almost exclusively watch videos about the world / history, and the quality that you deliver with the amount of subs / funds (I assume) is very good. Keep it going! I subscribed. I discovered you yesterday and I watched a lot of videos already.
Edit: I did enjoy your Santa video the most, but I do feel like you did not take one possibility in account. It is possible that his factory is completely underground.

Little sidenote, the maya were actually just an amorfous blob of city states for most of their history. The closest they ever got to unifying was actually when Teotihuacan (Not to be confused with Tenochtitlan) briefly sorta conquered them.

The Maya were never a unified Empire... they were a collection of city states each ruled by a divinE King "Kuhul Ajaw", they shared a culture and religion however not a unified state.
