    I said never again in 1992 after my first London Marathon (4.26). But then……. I just knew I could do better and it kept annoying me. A mate just told me I had to run more, longer, faster and more often to prepare correctly. Now after 18 marathons and a 2.47 pb I know anyone can do it if they put in the training effort. There is no other way!

      It’s nice to see an honest review.
      My first marathon (London) is this year and most of the videos about LM make it look easy. I fully expect to be questioning my life choices from about 15 miles in.

    Doing a marathon is like getting drunk. It seems like a great idea. It's fun at the beginning. There comes a point when you say to yourself "never again".
    Inevitably, you do it again.

    Congratulations on your first marathon - it is hard and I had to laugh at your wall comment and also your friend with the high five comment.
    I first did a marathon back in 2016 at Brighton with a time of 04.43.07. Fast forward I have ran multiple marathons now with my pb time at London in 2021 at 04:00:30. Also did it 2022 with a GFA time of 04:02:00 - doing it again this year with hopefully a sub 4.
    2022 I was also training for my first 100 miles and London was my last training run.
    I'm more of a trail runner than road.
    Just remember anything is possible ❤

    This is pretty much my first marathon exactly, including the finish time. (Except I was delusional enough to be aiming for 3:30!) I eventually went on to 4 sub fours, best time 3:45 and a few in the 3:50s. It takes a while for your body to get used to it! Glad you stayed injury free. Great video.

    Congratulations on finishing your first marathon and raising a load of money, it's a massive achievement!
    I think if you carb loaded for 3 days before the event, you'd smash sub 4.
    Eat between 6-8grams of carbs per kg of body weight for 3 days. Stop eating at 8pm the night before and then normal breakfast.
    I went from 4:28 and then got down to 4:01, 3:53 and finally 3:42 in 18 months, just by eating more pre event. Exactly the same training each time.
    Matt Fitzgerald's book New rules of marathon and half marathon nutrition was invaluable.

      I’m also 57 years young so great job! I started running just a little over a year ago after I had lost 90lbs. I’m doing Chicago marathon this weekend and hope I’m ready, I think I am but the distance is daunting and I don’t really know what to expect. I’m looking forward to the crowd support to help me along.

    • @Saxlicker
      @Saxlicker ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnrwilker Well John, congratulations first of all. My (post event) advice? stick to the time that worked for you in training. the first half will be so easy in comparison to the 2nd part which sounds obvious but there is no gradual warning, do what you know you can do and expect it to feel slower than you think you can manage. That means the point where you start digging deep will be much closer to the finish line. If you go quicker (even if totally comfortable) you will likely start paying for it way too early and doubt could set in. So run to plan!!! and good luck.

    Top vlogging. Articulate and humble analysis.
    I'm in 2 minds 🤔..
    .. most blokes, including this old guy, would give up one of his kidneys to look as good as you (much hard work on your part)
    However it is no surprise that a first marathon would be particularly hard for a man built like a *brick sh!thouse* (compliment) with muscles in places where I don't even have places 💪😁
    You were very sensible in your goals and that meant your *struggle* was put off til as late in the run as possible!
    You seem like the kind of a *competitor* who will want to again experience the feeling you get at the conclusion of a road marathon.
    I started getting fitter in my 50s by giving up smokes and booze and attending a gym with the goal of *running a 10k in under an hour in the coming year*... that was in 2009 and since then I have run (staggered, blundered... crawled) about 50 half and over 100 full marathons (including some *short* ultras) my point? If a basically unmotivated VM65-69 with pitifully little mental fortitude can do that I'm sure you will run (at least) 1 other marathon 🏃
    Again, well done on your fabulous achievement - you seem like a *good guy* as well! 👍

    Sounds like my marathon, plan A of 4 hours went at 16 miles, plan B of 4:10 went a few miles after, & then I saw the 4:15 pacers go by & I just couldn’t hold onto them! Goal then was just to finish & hope for under 4:30! Somehow I flew the last 3 & came in at 4:22:41. Was gutted at first, but upon reflection is pretty damn good for my first marathon! Took a good week for my appetite to return & for myself to start feeling normal. Well done, onto the next……?

    Awesome video! How long did you train to prepare for this marathon?

      Originally signed up for April 2020 (tried to go from couch to marathon in 4 months which was beyond stupid) was lucky it was cancelled for Covid. In the end I went from 5k/wk to marathon in about 9 months

    Eating 4 to 5 times a day is a problem. Cut out the carbs and almond milk and processed foods and you will feel better during training next time.

    • @AdamRadcliffe
      @AdamRadcliffe  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It can be, depends on your circumstances and goals Alan. I perform well on a high carb diet and eat minimal processed foods compared to most and felt great during my training. Thank you for your concern and advice though, all the best

      @@TheSqueak99 I just qualified for the Boston marathon eating only meat 5 months. Improved my marathon time by 28.5 minutes after cutting out plants. 3:43 at 62 years old. It’s the fountain of youth.

    I'm running in next years marathon and hoping to raise alot of money for charity.If I get injured before the race could I send someone else to run the race . Sponsors will want to see a medal and a time otherwise the charity will miss out on all the money thanks

    • @AdamRadcliffe
      @AdamRadcliffe  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Liam, you'll have to check with the charity and with the Marathon regulations. Typically a charity will let you roll over your place to a following year but changing the runner I haven't heard of so much. Get the training in super early and rest up two weeks before and you will be fine!

    • @AdamRadcliffe
      @AdamRadcliffe  ปีที่แล้ว

      Also the charity receives the money as soon as it is donated typically, regardless of the outcome of the event being fundraised for.

    First marathon was 4hrs 2 mins. For a fit young male first marathon anything under 4hrs 30 mins is good. Hard as hell been 6'4 and 250lbs weight trainer. Carrying too much muscle as that is my focus. Dropped to 215 lbs after muscle loss and did a 3hrs 6 mins. Marathons are for small people and little muscle mass not your Arnold Schwarzenegger look

    What? "The hard work is done" ... really? Was your longest run really only 8miles?? If so ... LMFAO 😅

    • @AdamRadcliffe
      @AdamRadcliffe  ปีที่แล้ว

      No mate it was 18 miles, not sure where you got 8 from. And the training is always harder than the event 🤙🏼
