    I always recommend this live performance to any person who has never heard Band-Maid before. It embodies what Band-Maid is in 4 minutes, and as a personal opinion, this is one of their greatest live performance (that is also easily accessible to anybody), performed just before COVID-19 was declared a pandemic. About 2 weeks later, most live shows in Japan were canceled. I was very lucky to have been there in the audience.

      Recommending the live version is fine, but sometimes people are kind of jerks about it. How are new reactiors supposed to know? And in some cases I think the MV version is worth it. Like, I think the videos for Blooming and Warning are super entertaining and totally worth it as the main reaction.

    Domination Live is so AMAZING!!
    It not only encapsulates just about everything that makes the band SPECIAL, it demonstrates how they can make a great song into a SPECTACULAR one through their INCREDIBLE live performances.
    Thanks for the great reaction! 🤘🤩🤘

    9:42 - This part ("dueling guitars") has a special meaning. When Miku (pigtails) formed the band back in 2013, she didn't know how to play. Kanami (lead guitarist) took Miku under her wing and taught her as the band grew over the years. So what you see here are the Jedi Master and Padawan jamming and showcasing their talents together.
    If you want a longer drum solo, check out BM's Freedom (2020 live) - th-cam.com/video/FHpuEqMAcDg/w-d-xo.html.
    Oh boy!

      @daaaaaave ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s also easy to miss, but Miku falls on her ass at the end of it, and Kanami just throws her arm up in victory and walks away. You can see Miku popping back up during the drum solo.

    9:50 I've seen this dozens of times and just realized a brilliant piece of stage craft. The two guitars are going crazy playing off each other in the middle of the stage, and when they both pull back, they are framing Akane on the drums. Like the curtains opening, introducing the star. BRILLIANT.

    Haha, glad you came back to the live version. I also enjoyed your previous reaction and have listened to some Coheed, it’s good stuff, I’ll have to dig in more.
    There are so many fun tidbits to this video that are just fun to note:
    During the second verse when all the guitarists crowd around the drummer they’re all making funny faces at her trying to get her to mess up. Just because they’re goofballs and having a good time.
    This is I believe the 23rd song of this particular show and they still have energy like it’s just started.
    MISA flips between using a pick and slapping her bass seamlessly. She does it during the solo and it’s so fast you can barely see it.
    MISA is also completely hammered by this point in the show, she was drinking whisky out of her flask during it and she holds up pretty well, but I think you can see it in her swaying movements even if she so damn good she still doesn’t mess up on the song itself.
    Miku falls on her ass right after she and Kanami shred together before the drum solo.
    I hope you get to see them live, I’ve gone twice now and absolutely had a blast both shows.

    I for one am really glad you did the MV before the live version. It was really refreshing to hear your thoughts on the difference, and your reaction to the change-up when the Maids get energised by a crowd. Live performance is where this band kicks it. (Mind you, “Warning” is a killer MV.)
    … and kudos for not following the usual “reactor route”: the Maidiacs are all amazing but we don’t always know best.

    The main lyricist Miku said in an interview that she wrote the lyrics taking crowd anticipation in mind.
    She consciously put simple wordings in the hooks or just sing-along/ chanting sections without lyrics.
    Unconsciously, she used the "Steve Harris (Iron Maiden)" method. He said once (paraphrasing) that: "For 90% of our fans, English is not their mother tongue so I put melody lines the audience can sing or chant along to it".
    Unfortunately, they seemed to have stopped doing that in their last 2 albums.

    The sanitation of music happened during the 80s as well, which is why the world went nuts for the Seattle grunge bands in the 90s. Instead of sticking players in isolation booths, you had a whole band standing around in a living room environment like Electric Lady studios playing TOGETHER.

    Total control of the arrangement by all members. I've often wondered how long it takes them to rehearse a song like this. It's going to be immediate, like their brains are wired together, or they are just human, and it takes f'n ages. My betting is on the first one.

    • @markabusireactions
      @markabusireactions  ปีที่แล้ว

      Having played in a band that also had some quite tricky and intricate arrangements, I can tell you, it’s a little of both. Sometimes everything just clicks right away and the song just… happens. Other times you’re painstakingly crafting it over the course of months, agonising and arguing over every single note to make sure it’s perfect 😂

    lol now you get it. The live version is _transformative._ It is hardly the same song. As far as studio tracks, I don't know that Domination breaks my top 30 Band-Maid studio tracks. The live version, however, belongs as a must have for their full live shows. I've seen them twice and can attest that what you heard here is what you get in person. I'm off the entire Maidiac bell curve on this one I'm afraid, lol. While I love Band-Maid and their whole stage presence (obviously) there are a fair number of their songs where I much prefer the Studio over the Live version. This is one of them, along with Thrill, Blooming, Dice, Rinne, Choose Me, and so on. One of the reasons, is I mostly *listen* to their music (I own all the CD's/DVD's/BlueRays, etc.) in the car, and in a comfy armchair at night with a glass of good Bourbon and a superb set of headphones, not just watch the videos on TH-cam. So the quality, nuances, and other little things that just can't match up in a video viewing platform really matter to me.

    • @markabusireactions
      @markabusireactions  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Oh I can absolutely see that. It’s weird, how people take away different things from the same medium. Like, I can understand how everyone loves the live version, it has more raw emotional power to it, and it has the solos and stuff. But I can also see how some people would prefer the studio versions, cause that has the pristine audio that with the right equipment can give you a great experience. Also why I like vinyl over streaming!

    • @Chan_Fry
      @Chan_Fry ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah, there's a spirit you get from live music that you can't get from a recording. It's like going to a movie versus a stage play. A movie will be exactly the same every time, but the stage play will be a little different every time. Listening to music at home with headphones on is different from being in a crowd of people listening together. Band-Maid live is different than watching a video of a live performance from 3 1/2 years ago. You aren't actually there. You can't feel your buttons vibrating from the bass. You don't hear the person behind you singing along. But it's what you get.
    Some people will say *"Dice"* is one of their songs where the video is best. That may be; like I pointed out above - two different things. It's interesting to compare. Another of their songs is *"Hate?"* that doesn't even have a video (it's available on their channel in a playlist under the "Releases" tab, in the playlist for *"Unleash").* They played those two songs back-to-back (with a drum seque) during their set at Lollapalooza last August 4th. You can search for the title "BAND-MAID - Dice & Hate? at Lollapalooza 2023, with optimized audio." Ignore the camera work; it's all about the bass.

    “Wrong video!” 😂 Maidiacs are a wacky bunch!
    However, you saw and heard for yourself that the Maids have an extra gear with a crowd. And this version was rearranged and extended, so it’s quite different.
    I very much agree with you that, so far, their studio tracks are compressed and sanitized. Most times, the music is so good, that doesn’t stop it from working, but I’ve always wanted to hear them with a producer who can get that organic, dynamic, fun stage energy on a track.
    Rick Rubin producing Band Maid’s double live album 💿 💿 Could it happen?
    Another fine reaction, thank you. I’m sure your reaction request list is growing. The best thing about this particular musical artist is that their catalog is wildly diverse. They’re hard rock, sure, but they’ve got metal, funk, punk, pop, smooth ballads, and songs that combine several of these elements. Saiki can rap, too. “More enjoy time,” Miku says it best

    I think by the time BAND-MAID were touring in 2019-2020, they had a better sense of what Domination was about. It was a bigger song. In experimenting with it as a live song, it became a bigger song. The guitar duels (trios) and drum breakdowns in the middle were just an wonderful extra, too.
    Thanks for going back and having a look at the Live, too.
    I saw BAND-MAID live, myself, just this last month. Though in a smaller venue in the US. Complex, high energy, loud, gigantic. An tsunami of rock and roll music. They started off with Domination as their first song. (I believe in the Valentine's Day concert in the video you watched, it was much later in the show. You can see some of that in the joy of the musicians on the very crest of a great night.)

    • @kla4600
      @kla4600 ปีที่แล้ว

      An extra thought on studio vs. live. A great many of BAND-MAID's studio songs reach their full potential, as studio songs. Blooming, Choose Me, Daydreaming. They are perfect sculptures of living sound. But some of their songs---especially ones from their middle period, like Domination and Freedom---had a period of continued evolution, post-LP.
      No God is a more recent one where the studio version is quite good, but it has acquired an additional layer of identity and energy in the live performances. Certainly, everyone in the audience jumps up and down in unison. No God was the finisher for the concert I attended.

    Right song, wrong version. Just WAIT until we get you into the multiple versions of Puzzle, Sayanakidori, Catharsis, Play, Take Me Higher, Flying High, No God, Page, Mirage, Forward, Time, Awkward, Manners, Different, and I could go on for at least another 10 or so songs. All of them having acoustic versions that are more than just using an acoustic instead of electric guitars. Where they have rewritten the songs for the acoustic guitar. Then they have as you have found added breakdowns, intros, outros, solos, duels, and other things which make these Ladies songs the BEST! You've heard one of their duels from Lollapalooza, now you need to go BACK to the Lollapalooza concert and see the duels from "Don't you tell ME".

    Too many people think it's a competition between LIVE and studio....it's not. LIVE can be "sanitized" too. After this one listen to "Real Existence" Official LIVE Video from their TH-cam channel here. That was a 2018 LIVE recorded through the mixing board and this "Domination" was recorded through the speakers. You'll see this concert was not as "clean" but still very good. Speaking of mixing, you could use a little more volume on your video level, have to crank it up all the way to hear it. With Band-Maid one should ALWAYS listen to the studio version first, then the live just as you did here.

    Maybe more prolific than The Beatles, in their ability to write good song after good song. Literally dozens and dozens of equally excellent songs, so it’s difficult to know where to start.
    Great point on incorporating the English but if you take the effort (and it is some effort) to dig into the lyrics, you’ll begin to understand that Miku is an excellent lyricist. And that “Hello, Hello, Hello” is more than an opportunity to include the audience but it’s her proclamation to the world that they intend to achieve their goals of “World Domination” and become so well known they’ll be saying “Hello” to the whole world.
    The little Pigeon has big dreams! And they have made a lot of progress in making it a reality!! 🤩
    Next you might want to check out their two-fers:
    - “Dice / Hate?” - unofficial Live from the Hulu coverage of Lalapalooza, videos on YT
    - “Manners / Black Hole” - official live

    You are spot on about production, especially some of Band Maids earlier albums when the record company had more control. Their album Conquerer is a classic example. So many fantastic songs but the production on the album is terrible. The studio have tried to make it sound like a pop album. Later albums aren’t as bad. Of their earlier albums, New Beginnings has the best production. It has a very raw hard rock/punk sound.

  • @bandmaidfanATL

    Quite insightful comments Mark...now that's done, wrong live video. Just kidding. What you will find with Band-Maid is that they have some that are terrific studio versions (like Blooming or Influencer) and not as good live, and some (like Freedom and Play) that are great studio, but just slap live. Plus, they like to add instrumental intros or middle sections to the live versions (like Play, Domination, No God) which is just so versatile and...fun. Also, Kanami and MISA do that all the time, they just diddle in the background when others are featured as support without taking over.

    Sorry, mate! Yes, the produced music video of "Domination" isn't bad at all. ...until you see them perform it live in front of an audience! Band-Maid is an energy monster with a live audience.
    Akane has said that she will write the drum part and she can nail it in the studio during recording, but she doesn't always "get" into the pocket and find the right "feel" until performing in front of a concert audience; the louder the better. Saiki seems to go up an order magnitude while running the crowd, and Miku, too. Kanami, of course, disappears into her own Mincho World performing on stage, almost like James Brown.

Studio/music video version to hear what is going on, then the live(where they take it up a notch or two), and like this version they sometimes will rearrange it for the fans as a bonus!(we used to not get to see/hear this prior since it wasnt posted to youtube for their Japan tour versions).
    Ps this is a tame song compared to their recent songs theyve written, but i love the arrangement regardless

    The Pigeon Hole is a jaded place. Anyway, SO MANY bands sound BETTER live than the studio albums which were produced for radio play (when that was a thing.). ESPECIALLY female fronted bands like Garbage, Blondie, Paramore, No Doubt, ... And then there are bands who can't even come close to the album when played live. You wonder if they were ever there in the studio. AC/DC, Metallica, Dragonforce, ... OK, most metal bands.

      @@raybl9295 think that might just be you tbh mate. Musical dynamics have got nowt to do with the volume a song is being played at, and actually, very often the quieter you listen to a song, the better you can hear subtleties in the mix.
      That aside, I could still hear the song, and could still comment on it. My above comment was merely to say that I when I was listening to it, during the recording, it was coming across as pretty quiet, and I didn’t realise it was gonna come across that way in the actual video too. My lazy editing is more down to a lack of editing skill than actually deliberately being crap at it, that part was just a wee joke ☺️

It rips the heart right out of the music. I know a guy that writes his songs by typing the tab into an app and it produces the sounds for him. Where’s the passion in that??
