  • Hello Drum Nerds, hope you're well. Join me as we explore 🥁BAND MAID'S "GIOVANNI" Gets A Reaction From A Drummer!😬
    The clips that were sent to me are excellent learning tools as it's a pure drum cam and as such allows us to see everything Hirose is doing. It's a beautiful thing.
    Also, if you wish to support my journey to Japan to hopefully do some filming with her once we hit 10,000 subs, donate here:

    The kit is a Tama Starclassic Bubinga and normally she uses a Ludwig black beauty snare I think, although she has a variety of other snares

    Akane is total nerd. Great picture of her coming out of a drum store in Califórnia with a new snare.
    She writes her part(s) on screen and only then learns how to do it.
    Mincho always chooses the hardest version.
    When they can all play it she cranks the speed up and it's another few weeks of practice. Not a band who sit down and jam and come away with a one riff wonder.

    Great reaction. I listened to the full song after this and the way the song is changed by Saiki's vocals is pretty amazing. You should listen to the full song too! It's almost a different song.

    Her main kit is a Tama Starclassic (Bubinga). The red color is based on her figurine of Asuka Langley Soryu (Neon Genesis Evangelion) that she brought to the factory.

      I'm really happy that my nerdy knowledge didn't let me down and I was able to see it was Tama Starclassic. Bubinga wood is a fabulous hard would that makes delicious, low end punchy sound. It's such a great wood to use. Be well.

      This is not the blue Starclassic kit she uses on overseas tours
      It’s her bubinga Star Custom kit with shallower toms made to her spec to match Emily.
      Emily is her red and pink sparkle Sakae Almighty Maple kit from when she was a Sakae artist before they went out of business.

Side note : I don't know WHAT a Las Vegas and Florida Stanley Cup final even means...(I hate to admit ... it'll probably be epic ). It's kinda the drumming equivalent of having a kit made entirely of marshmallows !... Doesn't make sense...but Oh, SO tasty !

    This song has walk-to-wall vocals that were stripped out for this play-through. You must check out the original, even on your own time. You can hear the guitar just enough to know Kanami is going bonkers but not how bonkers. But Saiki and Miku rule on this song.
    You may even find the live video for this. I love watching that one.

    'Giovanni' is one of my Band-Maid favorites because of the funky rhythm changes that Akane and Misa do. Kanami and Miku are doing mostly classic rock, but this piece gets funky/improv jazzy and and when you add Saiki and Miku's vocals there are spoken almost rap-like elements. This piece is a true genre blender (set the Osterizer on 11)
    At that time Akane was using TAMA STAR Bubinga and still is, as far as I know. Band-Maid had been upgrading their gear since the October '22 US tour, but I don't know if Akane has been making any changes. Her Bass usually features the TAMA logo above the BAND-MAID logo, but when I saw them in Detroit and Columbus the TAMA logo was missing. She was using a silver set in Columbus., but it looks like a red set in Detroit. OTH, the applique for the BAND-MAID logo has been slowly delaminating during performances: in Columbus the AID in MAID was slowly falling off. The A was hanging on by its leading leg on the last song of the set. There was a tiny logo that I could not read at the *bottom* of the bass skin that sorta but not quite looked like "Yamaha", so I dunno. I am guessing Akane needed a last minute replacement front head with a hole and they took what was available.

    I think its generally best to hear the origional song before the instrumental version - its kinda overwhelming and confusing its so busy - and then listening and watching this video helps you make sense of the song with its singing - but I get why as a drummer you want to see the version that has a drum cam :) I do hope you have gone and listened to the origional song too for yourself tho!

    When Kanami programs the drums when she write the songs Akane will often complain, "This drum part cannot be played by a human." But she always comes up with something. So I think it's good that Kanami challenges her to do that. To come up with something that she can play. Of course MISA does her thing on the bass to fit it in the Rhythm Section. Probably the tightest in the business. Of course Kanami plays Miku's part for her. It's just cheaper and quicker. But then after Kanami teaches it to Miku, Miku has to write the lyrics and teach Saiki her part. So it's very much a collaborative effort for the entire band. But yes, her drums are Tama, not Pearl.

      Hey, would you mind expanding? I a simple rock listener ("Too old to rock'n'roll, too young to die.") I'm curious about how jazz influence their music.

    • @stevekane4922
      @stevekane4922 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@throwaway9389 it's on many levels and also linked to their classical music background. Every theme "riff" is not just repeated but developed, and each piece has more than one. Every solo grows out of the overall music, rather than an unconnected egofest, each instrument gets it's role, and there is great complexity but it never tips over into our of control. But on the other hand it's more like Gershwin than Miles Davis (or other rock) because it's all carefully composed, mainly in Mincho's head initially, and written down in some form, before they practice playing it. So they frequently compose parts that they cannot yet play, and when they can after practice, they drastically up the speed and have to practice more, this is almost unique even in classical music for an ensemble. It gives them that special factor that very few other artists have. Mostly artists build a piece from elements they can already play and work it out with the instrument in their hands. Both kanami and misa might start on the piano or in Kanami's case in her head. Even akane starts on paper or on a drum program and composes stuff she's going to take weeks to learn to play. They push each other. Very different to the norm.

    • @surfingasongwave
      @surfingasongwave ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@stevekane4922 Nice observations. They are very deliberate but it seems natural at the same time. People notice how these instrumental versions change without vocals but are still coherent pieces of music. Each part is so musical that if you listen to just the drums, or just the bass, it still sounds like a piece of music. Akane isn't sitting back there hitting on 2 and 4 for the whole song. She's writing phrases and developing them, as you said. Misa does the same and they integrate so well that it is sort of amazing they each can stand alone as music. It's sort of like Dixieland Jazz in a way, everyone is off doing their own thing but it all nests so tightly together. I'll never get tired of them.

    Copied from another page on the internet: In 2016, Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin caught a performance of Band-Maid in Tokyo and asked for a photo-op with their drummer, Akane Hirose. Reportedly he told her that she was like a reincarnation of John Bonham.
