What an AWESOME reaction video!!! I LOVE this movie - find it VERY disturbing - so seeing you respond to it the way the filmmaker WANTED you to was fantastic. WARNING: some of the scenes are so memorable you'll think of them at times! There are so many awesome scenes - but I think the most stunning would be when the Constable sees the Wicker Man before the audience does... he truly looks terrified. The end, when the burnt Wicker Man collapses and we see the sun it was sacrificed to is also VERY memorable. Your looks, your responses... WOW you are awesome! Thank you so much for sharing!!!

The ancient Celts really did practice human sacrifice. They were also head hunters. When Buddica destroyed the Roman colonial cities in what's now southern England the Iccini took these as trophies!
Once watched this movie with someone from eastern Asia and someone from east Africa. I'm Scottish.
Someone commented....."everyone's ancestors make a smashing film.....But glad their gone".
    I agreed.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for watching this; its always great to see people to react to this masterpiece of cinema.
I have been a fan of The Wicker Man since I saw it when I was about 15. It is arguably the greatest British horror film of all time & rightly so.
Over the years, I visited several of the filming locations in Scotland; Plockton where Sgt Howie lands is an amazing little village near Kyle of Lochalsh on the north west coast.
Back in 2007 I had the great honour of meeting Sir Christopher Lee. I’ve been a fan of his for as long as I could remember, thanks due to his incredible body of work with Hammer Films. We had a lengthy conversation about those films & the production of The Wicker Man.
Right up until to his death, Lee remained adamant that there was a much longer cut of this film. Rumour has it, British Lion films disposed of hundreds of reels; one of which was this much longer cut of The Wicker Man.
Then in 2013, we got The Final Cut of The Wicker Man. This involved a restoration of the original theatrical print & also the few additional scenes that had been re-edited into it from the directors cut several years earlier.
Which ever version you watch, The Wicker Man always leaves a last impression on you.
Fun Fact: when I was at first school (age 5-10 here in the UK at the time) we had an annual May Day Fair…….complete with May Pole Dancing. What can I say, I grew up in a village in the Yorkshire Dales.
Several places in Cornwall still hold festivals around that time of the year. The most famous being the Obby 'Oss festival, which is held in Padstow every May Day.

They Tested Howie, tried to tell him go away, tested him with willow, if he had sex with her he wouldnt have been suitable. So they gave him every opportunity to leave but he didnt, Yes it was all a setup but he did have a choice that was given (until they disabled the plane) it was all about the battle between the old ways that predated Christianity, and Christianity who also burned people in fires, to send their souls to god. It is a deeply disturbing film the rigidity of both sides,

    • @OriginalPsychoOP
      @OriginalPsychoOP  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yes I was wondering about that. He was pushed and pulled into whatever direction the wanted him in but he stuck with his morals and proved to be a worthy sacrifice. It’s deeply disturbing how they give him a martyr’s death and he just has to accept it.
I do enjoy the contrast of Howie and islanders. To see them speak so freely about some thing and Howie to be the complete opposite.
      The ending is gut wrenching

@@OriginalPsychoOP for me after watching it so many times, it shows that too rigid a morality leads to death, plus if you look at modern practices easter eggs, rabbits fertility has been incorporated into Christianity and the festivals, I would love to see your reaction to the remake now you have seen the original, see the remake is adequate its been altered to fit the modern sensibilities, but its not scary but Nicolas Cage is always fun and insane to watch

You might be interested to know this year marks this movie's year 50th Anniversary. Also Sir Christopher Lee did this movie for free, because he was getting tired of playing Dracula in the Hammer movies and was looking for other roles for him to appear in.
Sir Christopher Lee has even said on quite a few occasions that this was his best role and his best work in any movie that he appeared in.

I was only 14 when I saw this at a theater in 1973. Even though it's R rated, they admitted me, and it really disturbed me. First it tickled my overactive teenage libido with the nude scenes, then it gave me a sense of dread during the finale. To make thing worse, I had some weird creeps sitting behind me who were chuckling during the sacrifice, like they thought it was the funniest thing in the world.

One of my favourite movies! Other movies since have been inspired by it, but it's so original on its own. It's classified as horror, but I'd say it's just a deeply unsettling thriller and a very interesting look at religion and what too much blind faith can lead to.

@Tim Barrett Howie may be a sanctimonious, judgemental prick, but the islanders had already decided to murder him before he ever showed up, for reasons that had nothing to do with him being a judgemental prick. Let's also not forget that, quite apart from the whole "murder" thing, the islanders were deliberately acting suspicious and being obstructive and annoying to get him to keep investigating, so at least some of his behaviour is being fuelled by frustration over nobody ever giving him a straight answer about anything.

"This is giving me Misommar vibes, like the May Queen, and the harvest and all. that good stuff - it's like kind of culty." Oh man, look what you walked into! Hahaha this is a fantastic movie. I myself have been revisiting 1970's horror movies, and sometimes just sprinkling in werewolf or vampire movies because some of them are really scary, and some of them are unintentionally funny. This movie is just nuts but in a good way! It's sort of like Children Of The Corn: The English Version. What a lot of great writing and cinematography! Edit: I completely forgot that the teacher asks the kids what the Maypole represents! That should have been a big hint... Edit 2 or 3: You're hilarious, I'm a new subscriber. Hope to watch some movies with you, your reactions are great! If only everyone had a sense of humor watching movies like these... Edit 5 because I'm certain I have just kept going: as a teenager I saw a Scottish Sword Dance, where they lay swords on the ground in a criss cross pattern (Scottish people if you are reading this don't be mad because I'm ignorant), and they dance between the swords. I seem to remember that at some point the swords are raised off the ground and the dancers still dance between them, risking getting cut. And so at 12:32, it is a nice play on that tradition they have over there, and I am certain that it shocked our English cousins to no end to see that scene!

Thank you so much for this comment. Yes this movie is a trip but in a fascinating way. I really enjoyed the mystery of it. There are some really beautiful shots and subtle hints to what may be going on.
I agree I’ve recently watch The exorcist and the hills have eyes both from the 70s and both were awfully frightening and unforgettable. Haven’t watch the monster movies yet but they’re coming soon.
That’s a really good comparison. Both stumbled into a unique society, with unfortunate plans for sacrificing outsiders.
The phagocytes symbols were all over and that really should’ve given a clue lol but they were so matter of fact about it. Really through me
Thank you so much I Honestly never know how people take my humor. I usually Hope it’s not too smarmy lol
That’s fascinating this was my first encounter with ceremonial dances like this. I’m sure some people were both thrown off and surprised by that scene.
Much appreciate the positivity and thank you for the sub

"Is this a musical?" - they joked that they were making a musical but disguising it! There's actually 14 pieces of music, which were included on a CD in the triple-disc pack I bought: the film, tons of extras, and the music CD.
This must be the only film ever where a man shouts "Jesus Christ!" and he's not swearing.
ps the powers-that-be hated the film and did their b est to bury it. When it became a cult classic they wanted to give it a "happy ending" by a sudden massive rainstorm putting the fire out. And then they wanted a sequel, but would have to explain that all the villagers aged 20 years overnight as god's punishment.

Both of these are products of their times. When original cane out the movies at that time took its time and might be a lot of slow burns that people now would consider boring. They take their time with this maybe you learn more about the characters like Christopher lee sings a couple times in this lol. In remake they got Nicolas cage which you know that one will be whacky with how he acts lol and he's more of action man so that gets to the point has more action more comedy cause if his performance lol and definitely not a slow burn. Same story basically just two ways of presenting representing their time periods. Like watching a movie in seventies then watching one in the eighties clear difference. More action more gore maybe lol. I like the remake more but still cool the original ensures and still gets recognition lol

Even with Nic Cage's goofiness and over the top performance, which is funny as hell, the remake still sucks! My guess why that movie is "man-misogyni" (is there another word for man hater?) is because the director Neil LaBute had earlier made a misogynistic movie called In The Company Of Men and with the Wicker Man remake he wanted to show that he wasn't a misogynist. I think, I'm just guessing. Also, there is a spiritual sequel to the original movie that came out in 2011 called The Wicker Tree and it was also directed by Robin Hardy and had Christopher Lee in a role.

Why paganism was largely abandoned and should be rejected to this very day. Say what you want about Christianity, human sacrifice is an evil act. Jesus Christ came and died for our salvation (John 3 : 16-17), so such barbarism depicted in this movie can be banished.
Fun Fact: The "evil eye" rowing boat, which takes Sergeant Howie (Edward Woodward) to and from his plane, was not constructed for this movie. It belonged to a resident of Plockton. Upon seeing it, the producers decided it would suit the movie. The boat survived until 2004 when it was destroyed in a storm.
