What I love about this scene is that, with the dream, we see how when it comes to his wife, we see that Gordon is conflicted as jack he wants to kill all women, but he still loves (or at least cares for his wife) and those two parts of him are in constant conflict, you get the impression that despite her later claim of him being “as gentle as a lamb” with her and the children that she at least was right on the edge of becoming Jack’s next victim, and since she’s clearly crazy too, it makes you wonder if the children they mention often (but are never shown) are even alive.

this is based of a graphic novel by the same name, and i believe there's also a second part to it (i think it's called "master of the future). there's also another set in a similar time period that's also a Lovecraft story called "Batman: the Doom that came to Gotham".

Jim was always proficient at hand to hand. In this universe he is equal to Batman because he was a soldier and prizefighter. Batman does not have very much training in this era. Make no mistake though, canonically Jim Gordon can kick ass. Go back to Batman: Year One if you dont believe me.

This version of Batman probably trained in Pugilism,Savate,Wrestling,maybe Jujutsu,and fencing with swords,sticks and knives. This were the martial arts available at the times. There was no Muay Thai,no Judo,no Bjj,no Sambo ,no Karate,no Silat nor Parkour. He still did pretty well for himself,considering old school pugilism is pretty effective by itself. But his opponent is an expert too,and a war veteran on top,with first hand experience.

actually, doctors and surgeons at the time tended to use big knives and saws. there wasn't much in the way of pain killers/anesthetics back then, so being able to work faster was generally considered better than working more accurately/delicately. Gordon is supposed to have been a doc during the war, when the primary test was "how fast can you saw through a leg."
He was a police commissioner and former army surgeon, probably well used to defending himself. He wouldn't have used a tiny scalpel to do that. If you mean the real "Jack" as opposed to the character in this movie, well nobody knows how he would have fought a masked vigilante dressed as a bat.
Isn't one of the alternative theories that Jack the Ripper was a butcher? That aside, old timey doctors weren't exactly known for their precision. Sometimes the line between Butcher and doctor was just some paperwork lol.

In hindsight you can see some things here that hint at him being Jack but honestly it’s all overshadowed by the misdirect of “oh he’s scared of the ripper and loves his wife” plus the dialogue being generic and vague doesn’t help that much. Maybe if we got something that was a bit clearer or maybe cut the dream and leave it to interpretation it would work better

I can't see Jack The Ripper's real face, he's wearing some kind of neck mask shirt. he also wears a mask that he stolen from the asylum/mental hospital. but in assassins creed syndicate quite clearly we can see that Jack The Ripper was wearing a sack over his head with two eye holes. Other horror movie characters that wears a sack such as Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th part 2 and even The Phantom Killer from The Town That Dreaded Sundown.

So, I understand why Batman looks more colorful than Jack. Is to make clear Jack be the bad guy. But the whole deal with Batman is he looks the part of the villain, as the horror that give the bad guys nigthmares, so its weird to see him as a dark blue instead of black, like Jack.
I kinda like how this Batman just picked up various tricks and techniques, but even a seasoned boxer can match him easily enough. Victorian Batman comes across as much more mortal and it works here.

Great analysis and It's a Jekyll and Hyde conflict that Gordon's is experiencing and I do believe that the children doesn't exist.
