  • In early 2020, National Geographic’s Pristine Seas project went on an expedition to the Patagonian Fjords in partnership with the local Kawésqar and Yagan indigenous communities. In order to better understand this unique area, the team conducted comprehensive scientific surveys of coastal and deepwater ecosystems and learned from the local Kawésqar and Yagan indigenous peoples about the cultural and ecological significance of the region. We commemorate this World Oceans Day by sharing with you images of the recent National Geographic Pristine Seas expedition through the fjords and channels of Patagonia, together with the Kawésqar communities for the Defense of the Sea and the Yagán people, whose representatives guided us during the entire journey through ancient routes aboard the Hanse Explorer ship.
Together we explored the territories of both peoples in Patagonia, combining the scientific knowledge of our team and the ancestral knowledge of both ancient cultures.
The experience was extraordinary and extremely enriching. Assessing the immense natural and cultural wealth, in addition to verifying the fragility of this region of Patagonia, reaffirmed the urgent need to protect it.
Conservation must be carried out with the native peoples. And, above all, we must support them in their effort to keep their culture alive and obtain full protection of their territories of life as a source of their identity, worldview, subsistence and ancestral rights.
