So why are we even seeing this when they don’t even explain the issue they are talking about?

Yeah I have no idea what’s going on, what did Eric Khan write on Twitter?

The reason Calvinists are hyper about language is because there are aspects of the doctrine which entail malevolence towards mankind - which the Calvinist internally finds disturbing. And those dark aspects of the doctrine are aspects which are unpalatable for the Calvinist. He does not want to acknowledge them himself. And that which he finds unpalatable - he will assume others will find unpalatable.
Consequently - Calvinists are extremely careful about how they craft statements. It is critical that all statements are crafted so as to present the doctrine in a positive light. It is a highly equivocal and highly obfuscating language and it can become extremely evasive. And when it becomes evasive - it appears in the form of DOUBLE-SPEAK.
Calvin's god has two provisions for mankind
    1) His PRIMARY provision is for *THE MANY* whom he creates specifically for eternal torment in a lake of fire for his good pleasure.
    John Calvin
    -quote
by the eternal *GOOD PLEASURE* of god though the reason does not appear, they are *NOT FOUND* but *MADE* worthy of destruction. - (Concerning the Eternal Predestination of god pg 121)
    2) His SECONDARY provision is for *A FEW* whom he saves from his PRIMARY provision.

It’s a broad reference to the Calvinist resurgence that was led primarily by dispy baptists over the last 20 or so years.

DW: As explained in the video - it is a version of Calvinism which is typically sugar coated. Many Calvinists have an ARMINIANIZED version of the doctrine. I have been in dialog with Calvinists of all stripes for a number of years. And it is typical I will detail something which the doctrine stipulates. The Calvinist who is mature in his Calvinism will know what I'm saying is true. And his response will very likely be "We don't say it that way". The Calvinist who is not mature in his Calvinism is likely to say "We don't believe that" or "We don't teach that". And he is telling the truth. His pastor or teacher is purposefully avoiding teaching aspects of the doctrine which the congregation is likely to find disturbing.
Many Calvinists today don't find quotes from John Calvin palatable. And they don't want to be associated with him. They will tell me they have never read anything from Calvin. They only read the Bible. Or they follow a confession. They distance themselves from Calvin.

i kinda think the ones who are most solid in the doctines are the ones who apply it to life and end up with overflowing fruit. I don't see how that wouldnt be the natural trajectory to the most sound understanding of doctrine! It's like who has a more robust understanding of neurology? the man who graduates top of his class, but hasnt practiced in 20 years? or the man who graduated barely above average, yet has spent the last 20 years becoming the top neuroseurgon in the world? Probably the one took what he learned in school and began to apply it tangibly. That is the logical natural progression.

New Calvinists dont have good doctrine in many areas. They usually soft 4th commandment and they are horrible on worship not upholding a strict regulative principle of worship.

1:33 “one quiet motivation (of the new Calvinism) …is to weaponize unconditional election to absolve their conscience of all their failures.”
Wow 😂. What amazing discernment and insight that allows this gentleman to not just criticize another’s reformed bona fides in doctrine, but their hidden motivations of the heart.
Setting aside my sarcasm - honest question here from a reformed Christian: Is it the YT algorithm cherry-picking these videos for me OR are these guys obsessed about talking about how their Calvinism is more pure than that of others?

It does come across as gatekeeping. Sort of like, “Only real Calvinists are on social media, making people mad. These are the real good works we need to see.”

If these "New Calvinists" (including, apparently, these talking heads) are shocked to discover that biblical ethics are important imagine how distressing it will be to discover that one thing called the "Sermon on the Mount"!

  • @andrewbrowne5557

Can we stop using the term ‘Calvinism’? How about we start using the term Biblicism? It’s what the Bible SAYS! Without fail, EVERY critique of ‘Calvinism’ on YT is a critique of a caricature! Nearly all of the critics accuse ‘Calvinist’s’ of worshiping a man, presumably John Calvin, and have little to no insight into actual Reformed (Biblical) doctrine…

    • @solideomusical

I really appreciate that advice! I understand that the term 'Calvinism' wasn't even coined until after he was dead.

    • @BelindaTN
      @BelindaTN ปีที่แล้ว +3

Exactly! What people call Calvinism has nothing to do with John Calvin other than Calvin agreed and believed the same things.

    • @emilybrereton702

I don’t think that is true as a whole. Lots of people super into Calvinism have walked away from it. Many use the original Institutes as well as clips of reformed teachers explaining it and then showing problems in scripture. Maybe you are watching critiques of non Calvinist people doing the critique instead of the original video. Saying this as one who has been heavily involved in only reformed churches (PCA and SBC) for 20 yrs. We should all seek the truth without a lens other than the Bible is the only true and trustworthy word of God. I find there is a strong in-group/out-group mentality with reformed bros and if one were to doubt a part of the reformed specific theology there would be a fairly strong fear of losing that community. Because it seems like reformed people are closed off from people of other denominations which are brothers and sisters in Christ as well. As if only reformed can be the biblical interpretation. (Which is funny because he even admits here that new Calvinism is slightly different than the old, so what used to be accepted is changing). This might cause some to hold back questions. Just my own observations.

I just want to be a true Christian man😫
I’ve only been saved for 8 months and I’m constantly doubting and falling. Sometimes I don’t even know if I’m a real Christian sometimes I see fruit. Can I just look to the finished work of Christ? I’m not good enough and I just want to know God and have peace with Him.

    • @seansimpson1133

If you’re trusting in Christ you have made peace with God. Stop focusing so much on your failures and focus on the finished work of Christ. As you grow in your walk with the Lord the fruits will come.

Set your eyes on Jesus. Just follow. Trust in him. Do not doubt his promises. You are not good enough, but he is. Your faith may be small, but God’s faith extends to the heavens. He will finish the work he started in you. Run the race, keep striving forward, put away sin, and abide with Jesus.

Brother, I was saved by the Sovereign Grace of God on 11/2/2022 so 9 1/2 months. I understand how it is a challenge to find where you belong and what doctrine is right and all the eschatological positions to dig in to, etc.. The most important thing to remember is that one must take EVERYTHING to the Lord. If one is truly saved, they will know by the Holy Spirit.

You have to know all the players mentioned here and understand the terminology (e.g., “soteriology”) and theological background. Otherwise,it’s intimidating, although they get into more concrete exposition of their points as the video gets past the midpoint. Listen again to the whole thing.

They are talking about woke Calvinism and the emerging realization that many Calvinists are materialists who have very little faith in the spiritual realm but yet do very little to fight evil in the material realm.
