    I never paid much attention to these long nose Binders because we didn't have one. However, one of the big farmers in our area had a fleet of 5 or 6 of them. They ran about 4000 acres or so, while we ran about 800. As I said, I never paid much attention to them back then but, I always assumed that, just because of their size, they were much more powerful. Our big tractor was a 7080 Allis Chalmers and had a similar horsepower rating. The family that had the fleet has replaced most of them over the years but, they still have one. I talked to one of the sons at a local show last year and, he said that it was still in use until 2018 but, it was undergoing a full restoration at the time. They are neat looking tractors.

    My boss tried out a 2+2 long before the 3788 . The boss took the cultivator tractor I always used & in 30 acres . I don't know if he ever did any fieldwork with it but after I tried to operate it it was sent back to the dealership with a Big NO attached . It was a good tractor for some farmers I guess just not for our needs Good Video though . If you ever find a 4100 or 4300 IH could you have a video with them taking a picture shout out ?

  • @billz410
    @billz410 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I remember when these came out; we had a neighbor that bought one. Being John Deere fans, it looked like something from Mars to us. 😀
    I believe he just ran single tires...I seem to remember a few around the country that would have duals on the back and singles on the front.
    Quite a design at the time.

    • @morganottlii2390
      @morganottlii2390 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It was a last gasp for IH. MFWD tractors were becoming the new thing, but IH went to the 2+2 instead. They didn't catch on, but I've heard they were solid units. IH cab was a bit roomier than JD SoundGard, but the shift controls on the left weren't easy to adjust to.

  • @generationll
    @generationll ปีที่แล้ว

    Very innovative tractor.Always thought duals were prohibited on these 2 PLUS 2s.First saw 3588 at the The 1979 Washington County New York Fair where the local IH dealer Salem Farm Supply had it on display

    • @jamesbarbour8400
      @jamesbarbour8400 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe that you are correct where front mounted duals are concerned. For one thing, the front axle, which I believe was manufactured in Yorkshire, England, was not rated for the mounting of dual wheels.
      Additionally, since this one has front duals, an issue may be front and rear tyre interference on a turn, or a compromised turning circle, if trying to avoid having the front tyres hitting the rears during a turn. Iconic machines nevertheless.

    • @davidvogel6359
      @davidvogel6359 ปีที่แล้ว

      @James Barbour I thought they put stronger front axles in the later ones so they could take duals. you still had to watch the wheels and not turn too short.

    • @jamesbarbour8400
      @jamesbarbour8400 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@davidvogel6359 I think you may be correct on the ones for 1985 year production - weren't too many made as the company hit the buffers and got taken over by Tenneco Corporation later that year.
      Should really have had the uprated axles from the get go in any case.
      They just don't look right with duals on the back and singles on the front - they look like they really mean business with both axles outfitted with duals though.
      Pretty iconic machines and it was good to see a manufacturer taking a chance and develop something outside the box of more conventional, traditional thinking.
      Also think it was a shrewd move to utilise the existing transaxle and cab to create something so different looking - I take my hat off to the designers at IH.
      Fact is, the company were overstretched, with fingers in multiple pies, and strikes apart, it was largely this that put paid to the company.
      A similar fate befell MF, now part of Agco - during the late 70s/early 80s, MF were hugely over extended with the banks and had far too much manufacturing capacity than was necessary, particularly during this period.
      John Deere are still the only independant tractor manufacturer these days, thanks to living within their means during the tough times in the market, which let's face it, is cyclic at the best of times. They have had some canny people at the wheel, though I strongly disagree with their stance on right to repair. Once you buy a machine, it's yours - end of !

    • @jamesbarbour8400
      @jamesbarbour8400 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are actually correct. IH were not doing so well financially, even back in '79, when these tractors first came to market.
      IH did have to make a pivot to attach to the front of the existing transmission, and create a front frame, to house both the engine and fuel tank. Oscillation between the axles, in order to keep all driving wheels in contact with the ground, if it was uneven, was the role played by the front axle, whilst the rest of the machine was rigid. To the best of my knowledge, the front axle was manufactured at one of IHs' plants in Yorkshire, England, but the axle was not rated for duals.
