@@jessew7565 ugh, never complain Swift with Nirvana. I respect Taylor for her influence in the modern pop music, but she will never reach the same level as Kurt. It's like too obivious.
0:13, Kurt starts playing ‘Rape Me’’. Nirvana had originally planned to play this but MTV forbade it and told them they’d be cut if they did - hence the band’s surprise. Apparently they were seconds away from being cut.
Watched this live. Krist the bass player actually threw his bass guitar in the air and missed catching it and it hit him in the head and literally knocked him down and almost out. He gets up and falls twice. Btw the reason for their performance (ironically playing and tearing the guitar, amplifier cabinets and drums) was they were told they couldn't play “Ra_pe Me”. Kurt was insulted. So he started playing it anyway!! This was controversial at the time. Us kids loved it.
They were told Rape Me would get them shut down immediately. So just to fuck with the producers they did the opening chords and lyrics. Gotta remember that Rape Me was not released until In Utero over a year later.
@@Rockyinlp Thanks for the backstory guys, I was wondering what was up with that. I thought he might be fucking with the crowd, but that is even better.
And don't forget, too, that as they were walking off stage, Dave gets on the mic and starts yelling "Axl, hi Axl!" (this is while the woman is talking at the end). This was because Axl Rose and Kurt almost got into a fight backstage earlier.
@@zachemorgan not true at all. You are completely oblivious to how music has always worked. Do you realize what people said about Jazz? Etc etc… music is constantly changing and evolving and just because you don’t like a particular genre that’s mainstream doesn’t mean that music in general is worse. Nirvana was mainstream and motherfuckers would say the same shit, *”worst era of music”* Sure it has gotten easier for people to make music but that’s how it’s always been with technological developments. Motherfuckers 30 years ago would have their brains explode if they heard what kind of sounds we create today with technology. It’s how it has ALWAYS worked. Fuckin old head is what you are and if you can’t realize that you’re straight up dumb
It's ashame. I blame us 80's babies for being brainwashed by MTV and my generation eating up whatever was cool or what was no longer cool in a span of one decade. Looking back it's hard to believe Nirvana existed in the same decade with Brittany fucking spears????
It’s no wonder why Kurt and Nirvana are remembered by so many people when they have this level of talent, it’s such a shame Kurt passed away so soon as he had so much more to give this world but it makes what we have from him so much more precious in a way that only happens after a person has passed away.
"In Bloom" is a perfect example of that. The chord progression in that song is unique. Not to mention that the guitar "solo", while being purposely abstract and probably intended to be noise instead of a solo, works and fits perfectly. He might not have been the ideal guitarist in terms of technicality or tightness, but I still feel like he put a lot of careful thought into the music he wrote.
@@borrowedbody5409 Me too. And there's something great about how Nirvana only played a few seconds of the wrong song. It showed they were aware they were messing with the station and that it wasn't just a misunderstanding. I miss this level of subtle trolling.
As a 17 year old I’m 1991 when I first ran into Nirvana, the thing that struck me the most about their music was how they would mix these melodic verses with powerful choruses. It was like sweet and salty. It was like hot and cold. It was like smooth and crunchy. The contrast made each song so much better.
This song was released on July 13th of 1992 being 11,190 days old and it being 31 years old, it still is one of the greatest songs Nirvana has ever performed.
Man this will always be my favorite version of Lithium. They sound so raw in this version and I can’t imagine stage diving has ever taken place at a VMA performance before this. Crazy
“Live,” on TV? You saw it on TV. I just saw it on TH-cam. Great rhythm and payoffs in the song. Kurt, had an awful childhood, it’s no surprise he would take drugs. Sad.
Me too... I live in Indonesia, and I watched this live on my campus TV during recess. what a great experience to witness this rock history. I remember after Kurt slammed in to Dave's drum kit, and then Dave yelled "where's Axl!" repeatedly. made my friend whose a G'n R fanboy pissed himself :D
“I’ve got two words for you Pip …. Marky Mark !” After watching such a great performance, being ambushed by that gem of a segue just cracked me up. My eyes were watering. I love the 90’s
@@TheJimbo1791 Well I would love to see him accidentally and call out to him "Hey Marky Mark". What are the odds that he would chase me down the street?
"and now for all your long CARE needs, its Nirvana!" Think you misspoke there Mr MTV haha! This version of Lithium is absolutely amazing! Love his voice here...., at 1:24 its just perfection.
His attack was so aggressive, that it would have been easy to mistake him for angry...but then you'd look at his face, and shoulders...and they'd be completely relaxed while beating the crap out of those drums. lol
Not many artists nowadays have songs that can match the quality of Nirvana's songs. They sound great, energetic, serious, relaxing and funny at the same time
I still remember this as if it was yesterday. I listened to Nirvanas albums over and over, but never saw them except for the album cover and the music videos on MTV. Rumours spread that Nirvana would perform on VMA, since I live in Sweden and it was very late for us on MTV due to the time difference so I programmed the VCR to record it. The day after, this performance blew my mind. I first couldn't recognize Kurt because of his haircut. It might have been their best live performance ever. I watched it at hundreds of times, taking notes of every detail. Legendary is the word, a word that is used a little bit too often these days but this is really legendary, if anything is.
I've always been suprised at a lot of concerts they were so close to the audience. Even people going on stage to crowdsurf and no one batted an eye or were scared. They were right beside Kurt and Krist but never touched them. You'd be terrified now that someone was going to harm you. Scary the way the world is gone.
Same here, but it's time to share them, because we are all getting older, good working equipment to play the tapes is getting harder to come by and the tapes do not last forever😔
The sheer visceral power of Nirvana, wow! Such a loss, so very sad, Kurt really was something special and a true original. In a sea of subsequent imitators, his voice still stands out, just as raw and beautiful as ever, a real force of nature! X
I love how he psyched MTV out by starting off playing the one song they asked then not to play. They were literally a ticking time bomb in the music industry. It’s something beautiful you rarely ever see these days
Dave is awesome on the drums 👍🏻🎸 Nirvana were something magical. I miss the 90s I wish I could have seen them. I did see..after Kurt passed..I got to see Bush, RHCP Velvet Revolver..they were awesome.
Remember watching this as it happened. My god was this one of the most explosive out of control and unbelievable performances on a live awards show ever. They were totally high out of their minds and the guitar to the face at the end with the destruction of the drum set was unforgettable. These guys were so talented despite their addictions.
It's like an awakening, when you discover that all the stuff you heard before was mainstream, brainwashing junk. I had my awakening thanks to punk rock in the late 70s.
I was 15 yrs old when this album dropped. Music was almost finished with the hair bands and nirvana pretty much threw the dirt on the coffin. Although I’ve circled back to appreciate all of the genres, this album was and still is a masterpiece. Gotta say though, 80’s was the absolute best decade to grow up as a kid.
I remember watching this live. Such an amazing moment and they sound great. Whoever mixed this knew what he was doing. Anyone that watches this and doesn't think Nirvana was a great band either has really bad taste is just a hater.
I was in 10th grade and watched this live the night this aired for the 1992 MTV music awards.. probably one of the best performances ever. The Nevermind album released a year prior.. what a time to be in high school with all of these legendary bands at their peak!
I saw this live on MTV and could not believe Krist’s bass antics. Ouch.! So rock n roll! I saw them on their last tour at Roseland NYC with Pat added on guitar. They just crushed it. I was older than most in the pit, and thought these kids are not really appreciating these guys enough. I was in awe at how tight they were and Kurt’s fn powerful vocals. I’m so glad I got to see them live.
That's because you were OLDER than most there. Think back and remember what it's like to be early 20s...think back about all that you did NOT know. Think about what you took for granted. You had the benefit of knowing just how off the hook they were, and how different because you had more life experience to draw on. That is how life works, if you live long enough to experience it.
I was 33 at the time not a geezer yet😉 but thanks for the life coach lecture. I was going to concerts at age 16 and playing in bands from 18 on so even if I was 23 at the time I would have felt the same, being a musician / guitarist and songwriter you have a different perspective than most casual concert goers. The kids were really into the pit and having fun, that was just the scene at shows in those days.
I've seen that happen a few times. The guitarist from Biffy Clyro jumped down off his stack at Soundwave in Sydney a few years back and smacked his head on the tuning pegs and cut his forehead open quite badly but kept playing and telling the medics to get off the stage. Actually I don't think he realised how badly he was bleeding until the blood started covering everything, that was pretty hard core. I also saw the guitarist from Wolf Alice cut his hand and keep playing, at Glastonbury that was, there's footage of it here on TH-cam if you search for it. I saw Jon from Shihad jump down from some scaffolding at the side of the stage and land so hard he kneed himself in the nose which started bleeding everywhere. I saw Cam from Bodyjar (a fantastic Australian punk band) jump into the drumkit at the end of a show and have to be carried off, it turned out later he'd broken his leg. I guess it happens more than we think. Some musicians rock hard and give it everything, and sometimes it results in injury. As for being the old guy, ha! Last time Mastodon played in Sydney I decided I was going to give it one last hurrah in the pit and plunged in. Given I'd recently had surgery on both knees and one ankle (sporting accident) and was 52 at the time it was a risky move but I had a great time mixing it with all the young blokes and got suitably battered and bruised. As we were heading out a couple of young dudes said "respect to you man, I hope I'm still moshing when I'm your age", which was nice. I didn't mention that everything was hurting like hell and I could barely walk, but hey, details. I also didn't mention it to my orthopedic surgeon when I saw him a week later..... these days I stand a little further back and just enjoy the show. I also saw Nirvana the one and only time they came to Australia. Unfortunately they sucked. Kurt was so off his face he spent half the gig lying on his back making woeful wailing noises with his guitar, and they tried to play too loud and overloaded the PA system TWICE. It was pretty ordinary. Dave was great but he couldn't do enough to save it on his own. Every band has their off nights I guess.
I wish they would have recorded this in studio. I love this Morrissey style version of Kurt’s singing. It’s phenomenal! The reason why he did it is funny, but it turned out absolutely amazing!

I know we had bad white going on but we had the music to escape you know 👍🏻🎸 rest easy Kurdt and all the other musicians from then that helped start this amazing music.
Classic video. Kurt misses his cues, Krist takes a bass to the noggin, Dave punishes his drums and Kurt destroys amps and guitars... and it's a great performace. Then a very young, pre-acting Mark Wahlberg pops in. What a time it was!!
Haha, Kurt leading off with Rape Me just to spite corporate, Krist beaning himself with his own bass so bad he falls over, Dave just killing the drumset. You guys were awesome. RIP Kurt - 30 years since we lost you man. Miss you.

every heard of a little someone named Taylor Swift? Cmon now
@@jessew7565 ugh, never complain Swift with Nirvana. I respect Taylor for her influence in the modern pop music, but she will never reach the same level as Kurt. It's like too obivious.
Dave is a BEAST on drums and Kurt was amazing with his special voice ... those were the times when being a teenager were great every day
I loved it. A great time to be young
Poor Chris…
0:13, Kurt starts playing ‘Rape Me’’. Nirvana had originally planned to play this but MTV forbade it and told them they’d be cut if they did - hence the band’s surprise. Apparently they were seconds away from being cut.
they did a little trolling
@@sexopimbada the whole performance is a troll they weren’t supposed to play lithium either lol
Kurt Cobain was the '90s version of Jim Morrison. When Jim sang "girl could we get much higher" live on TV it had a very similar reaction.
Y ahora MTV se ha vuelto una porqueria
Chickened out in other words
Watched this live. Krist the bass player actually threw his bass guitar in the air and missed catching it and it hit him in the head and literally knocked him down and almost out. He gets up and falls twice. Btw the reason for their performance (ironically playing and tearing the guitar, amplifier cabinets and drums) was they were told they couldn't play “Ra_pe Me”. Kurt was insulted. So he started playing it anyway!! This was controversial at the time. Us kids loved it.
Thanks for watching and commenting Johnny

It’s no wonder why Kurt and Nirvana are remembered by so many people when they have this level of talent, it’s such a shame Kurt passed away so soon as he had so much more to give this world but it makes what we have from him so much more precious in a way that only happens after a person has passed away.

This is NUCLEAR. What an amazing, amazing voice and overall sound.
Im glad you found and enjoyed it
My favourite thing about Kurt was his chord progressions- so unique and weird; they almost don't make any sense until his vocal melody lays over top.
The melody of Lithium is really beautiful and really hard to create whit that progression what a genius Kurt was
"In Bloom" is a perfect example of that.
Nothing 'unique' about Nirvana's sound.
It's all basic Washington State music that all the bands were doing 1985 to 1995.
@@thesecondTH-cam I did not say anything about the overall sound of the band- I was referring to Kurt's chord progressions.
The chords are the same shit 'Green River' and the other bands was doing back in 1985.
Gosh Kurt sounds so good here! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 Especially the "Yeah"s, so powerful! Goosebumps ❤️❤️❤️
4:23 The irony of Kurt saying "I killed you" as Krist falls over from getting hit by the bass LOL!

Released in 1991 November I think
my sixth birthday. i remember my dad waiting for it to be in stock at the record shop
You may be wrong with the date of release. It was released in 1992 as single, but was already on Nevermind, wich was released in 09/1991.
Rest In Peace Kurt! What a performance from one of the best bands ever!
Man this will always be my favorite version of Lithium. They sound so raw in this version and I can’t imagine stage diving has ever taken place at a VMA performance before this. Crazy
I saw this live on TV! Very memorable.
It certainly was, the highlight of the evening.
You're a f*cking legend
Me too. It was awesome to my teenage mind and still is to my 46 year old mind

Oh the 90's....how I miss you. I was 19 when this was recorded and SO full of life!
I've always been suprised at a lot of concerts they were so close to the audience. Even people going on stage to crowdsurf and no one batted an eye or were scared. They were right beside Kurt and Krist but never touched them. You'd be terrified now that someone was going to harm you. Scary the way the world is gone.
True, I was looking at it and I was surprised, no one stopped people from running up, they barely even acknowledged each other
Best mtv music awards.. to me...i have it all on video tape.. with adds and all.. its a treasure
the best performance of that night on MTV
I love how he psyched MTV out by starting off playing the one song they asked then not to play. They were literally a ticking time bomb in the music industry. It’s something beautiful you rarely ever see these days

Usual pattern would be rocker breaks guitar - not vice versa.
There will never be another band like nirvana. Ever.
There will be!
30+ years later and i'm still waiting for a successor to his melodic genius
I still remember how I felt listening to these guys back then, it was really something special.
I love that Pip Dann just announces things normally in the end while Kurt is treating the drum kit like a playground in the screen lol.
Still have goosebumps.
