  • Suzuki has redone its flagship Suzuki Hayabusa GSX1300RR for 2022. Cycle World gets a first ride, and finds the ’Busa is better.
    Riding the 2022 Suzuki Hayabusa in the canyons of Malibu, California, is a bit like taking a bazooka to a pistol range. You get a great sense of firepower, but really, not a taste of the full capabilities of the weapon. How far away is your target and how fast can you hit it? At least Malibu and the surrounding area isn’t all tight corners and bumps, so we had a few choice moments to explore the Hayabusa’s legendary firepower.
    Our 180-mile 2022 Hayabusa GSX1300RR first ride gave us a good taste of what this redone icon is all about, but it sure seemed a long way and long time from the original 1999 Hayabusa model launch in Spain. We had an amazing life-changing day dragging fairings and engine covers at Circuit de Catalunya followed by a day of “On-Road Touring” that ended up with us sixth-gear-pinned on a Spanish freeway about five minutes after ride departure. And we rode like that all day, doing things on a motorcycle that mortals had never before experienced, because no motorcycle had ever been as fast, powerful, and competent as the Hayabusa. Our original Cycle World testbike did a 9.86-second quarter-mile with a 146-mph terminal speed, and achieved a 194-mph top speed past the CW radar gun. On our in-house Dynojet dyno, it made 161 hp at the wheel and 100 pound-feet of torque.
    We will get full test numbers when we get our unit back at the office. Until then, I can say the new ‘Busa finds 145 mph in the blink of an eye and seems capable of lifting the front wheel at nearly any speed below that. And even though I burned less than a tank of gas on our ride, I have full confidence saying the bike’s superb balance and flexibility has been retained. It’s also still wicked fast-and remains big even if it is…lighter, perhaps? As a 6-foot-2 225-pounder, I feel right at home on the ‘Busa. Always have, from that first time I let the clutch out on pit lane at Catalunya and for the 12,000-something miles I put on our 1999 copper-colored long-termer. The Hayabusa was, in fact, my first long-term testbike when I was hired at the magazine.
    As I approached the 2022 ‘Busa for my half-day ride from the hotel launching point, I thought the bike was more Hayabusa-looking than the press photos had suggested. I expected it might have gone a bit too lean-and-mean GSX-R, but in person it retains a strong family resemblance. The cockpit in particular is clearly descended from the first bike’s, with a similar damped-top-clamp treatment, large analog tach, and a speedo flanked by analog fuel and engine-temperature gauges. The bar damping is said to offer improved feel while also isolating bad vibes better. Our Glass Sparkle Black testbike with Candy Burnt Gold accents was a nice homage to the original bike.
    It’s no surprise that the bore and stroke of the 1,340cc engine are unchanged, and that the intake ports and exhaust ports have identical spacing as the previous Hayabusa. This way all that existing aftermarket go-fast equipment will easily fall into place on the redesigned, stronger bottom end. The frame has a similar design as the Gen 1 and Gen 2 ‘Busas, as well, and the overall effect is that everyone with ‘Busa tuning experience is going to know exactly what to do.
    Release the relatively easy-pull clutch lever and you are greeted with great feel and absolute authority over the engine/transmission interface. You can feel its meaty strength as you slip away from a stop and feed in throttle. In fact, you can leave a stop in fourth gear with relatively little effort and idle along at 18 mph and about 1,400 rpm once the clutch is engaged. The engine could run all day in fourth, from this slow traffic speed all the way to about 140 mph in this one gear. Thankfully there are six gears to choose from, now with clutchless quickshifting both up and down.
    A few straight-line blasts in lower gears demonstrated that the Hayabusa’s eyeball-flattening performance is very much like it always has been. But it was grand to get onto the winding backroads of the Malibu mountains-bumps, rockfall, tar snakes, and all.
    As we swung through the bends, all the torque needed for a brisk pace came while running 4,000-6,000 rpm. But when kicked up to 7,000-9,000, it started to get serious; you could really feel the rear tire start to work when exiting corners. Take it to the white-painted “happy zone” from 9,000 to the 11,000-rpm redline on the tach and… Holy warp drive.

    Great efforts by Team Suzuki. Busa has always been and I guess will be like that Ninja Sword transferred from generation to generation. I am glad that since 90s riders are enjoying this bike and now the gen z will also enjoy it. This shows the caliber of the company and the efforts they put in to make sure they give the riding community one of the best motorcycle to ride and brag about. 👌🏻 Looking forward to the next video Cycle World team.

    Thanks so much for this spot on review! You are the fist one I've ever seen in all the videos who is positively commenting on the 'all same as before'. For me it makes also a lot of sense that Suzuki stickied to the motor layout and chassis as with the 2nd Gen for the descriped reasons.
    And I love the new look and all the new electronics, AND that it is and still deals like a Busa

      Yeah I didn't like the look of the new Hayabusa at first. But after a few weeks of thinking about it, the 3rd Gen bike is absolutely perfect. It's a more refined version of the 3rd Gen bike with a more refined, more durable engine. They made the bike even better. It didn't need more power. Power was not the issue. People who own Hayabusa bikes don't leave the engine stock. Every Hayabusa owner modifies the bike, so they didn't change the engine. Suzuki and Harley Davidson understand what the customers want, and they are both on point right now, even if we don't understand their logic.

    Nice vid. I think too many people have wrongly dismissed this bike out of hand because the headline is that it doesn't have a bigger engine & more bhp than the gen 2, or a turbo, which was never going to happen! At face value the specs did appear a bit disappointing but that's too simplistic imo. It's not revolutionary but seems to have been beautifully refined. The reality is the engine is more powerful than the gen 2 but the Euro 5 exhaust is strangling it, which is easily fixed. I predict some big gains!

    AS A HONDA 50cc Moped Rider- My bike insurance company Expressly ASK ME, if the little two stroke moped with the Piston the size of a 50cent Piece, HAS A TURBO CHARGER???? .... I was thinking at the time, what does this company think- I OWN A HAYABUSA...??? The question was asked so that any supercharging or turbocharging, even on a small bike, THEY would NOT COVER it... Great bike and vid. RH DSD

    I absolutely agree with you so many people have gotten online and express that they wanted the faster bike a lighter bike supercharged not as other stuff the whole point is to have the same speed the same agility in the same Hayabusa genetics in a newer style bike with a lot more extra offer they trimmed it down on the body style is very beautiful and everybody's complaining I love the Hayabusa I love the new Hayabusa and if I ever get an opportunity to purchase I will I currently own a 2008 Hayabusa special edition Orange and I love it

    I really wish they would up sell me from my ZX14R but doesn’t look like that’s happening. Kawasaki will probably never update the 14R because it’s already faster than the H2 in the quarter so Suzuki is my only hope.

    This bike may be stylich, technological, carrying some genetics and even fast.
    But it is far from claiming the throne. Hayabusa is not a fast bike only, it is
    the fastest. As a proud owner of a modified gen2, I would gladly crash down this
    pretty toy. So, what I expect from Suzuki is to announce an X or R version later.
    Its publicity may take place in Asia or in the US, to be able to show the real
    potential of the new king, aside from the so-called gentlegirl-agreement. The European version may work in the F mode only, which is harmless unless there's a way to switch to A mode. Until then the legend will stay as a legend and real fanatics of Hayabusa won't be satisfied.

    I’d love to own one of these, it’s always been a dream bike. The insurance costs though are insane. I’d pay more in insurance than the bike payment.

      Get a bank loan. Go to your bank and simply tell them you want to buy a vehicle. You don't need to tell them what you're buying. Tell them you want to do a "personal loan." This avoids the hefty insurance premiums. Hayabusa's cost $390 per month to insure with full coverage.

      @@Damiv So there are different levels of insurance. It's only about $45 a month to get minimum "liability" insurance in WA. I am assuming most states are liability only? Bank loan payment is only $150 a month! Plus $50 for insurance per month. So $200 a month. A lot better than $650 new off the show room.

      @@Ritalie I can't get an unsecured loan for that much, and a secured loan would require full insurance. Maybe you have a way better credit score than me, but most unsecured loans I've seen max out at like $5k.

    I just feel (because I haven't seen one on the metal) that this is more of a Gen2.5 Hayabusa, rather than a Gen3. Suzuki basically restyled it, brought it up to standard to 2021 (but without a digital dash), and let it loose. It has been 20+ years since Suzuki took a bold step forward that. really pushed the industry, rather than simply "be" and try to sell bikes... Dunno, I feel sad seeing Suzuki sitting still

      Confusing as it is, there is no new Hayabusa for 2021 because gen 3 is not universally available everywhere yet. In a lot of countries the only Hayabusa people can get their hands for the time being are the gen 2 models, which officially stopped in 2020 but have been recycled into 2021 for sales.
      The gen 3, although technically released in 2021, is called a 2022 model because that where it's tracking from.
      Ride safe.

    Disagree completely, Hayabusa was the fastest in a quarter mile and TopSpeed , now it's even slower than 1000 class ,,, as a Hayabusa owner for 20 years I am very disappointed, I guess cycle world forgot how fast everything else is

      2021 Hayabusa 0-60 in 2.79 sec and under 10 seconds quarter mile while a 2018 Panigale V4 is 0-60 in 3.2 seconds and above 10.3 seconds quarter mile.
      2020 R1 is 0-60 in 3.1 and quarter mile in 10.10 seconds.
      I guess you forget how late torque at high rpm needed modern sportsbikes are compared to Hayabusa, ZX-14R (which still laughs at any modern leader ICE sports bike in drag race stock) 0-60 mph in 2.5 sec and quarter mile in 9.49 seconds obliterating R1M, Panigale V4S, etc in a straight line.
      Even a Ducati Diavel S )0-60 in 2.5 sec) ridicules modern sportsbikes in a 1/8 mile drag stock.
      The 2021 Hayabusa is near perfect for what it is and you can turbo it over 500hp if you want.
      If you want modern power than try a Lightning LS-218 or Energica Ego Plus 0-60 in 2.3 sec in a straight line they also laugh at modern leader sportsbikes.

      Not quite. See the Bennetts Bike review (the one from today). Comprehensive, including acceleration numbers. Nothing lost here, and it seems quite a bit gained in polish and even durability. Not a flashy update, but very smart.

    Suzuki milking loyals with same old platform with bit tweak just like Harley been doing with its base for years. And covering up the big pile with crappy marketing and words trying to hide the fact that minimal R&D invested into it.

      I can appreciate this bike as is but the GSXR line of the past 10 years bores me. Paint and styling on the GSXR line disappoints. Powers fine I am talking about looks. I loved the 1985 to 2008 .

      @channelofstuff been waiting for an update from Suzuki for years, I am disappointed but that doesn’t make me a hater, Infact as one of the biggest fan of busa and having owned previous gens I was absolutely sure to get this one. If they had came out with this version 5 yrs ago sometime along with the zx14 2014 update it would have been perfect, now this is just putting lipstick on pig just because they were forced to go euro 5, they saw an opening with zx14 being discontinued, they still see a huge addicted fan base, they are like ...let’s just play these fan boys

      @@channelofstuff6662 never tell someone to not buy it... ESPECIALLY THIS EARLY. What do you do when it gets discontinued 2-:3 years from now? Parts will be a bitch to get from dealers.. and aftermarket will be virtually worthless if you want to stand out.
