The Confusing Chinese Time Zone

  • Today I learned that China has only one time zone, which wouldn't be a big deal, since most countries in the world are like that. But since China has a huge territory, this creates some interesting scenarios - like experiencing a sunset at 11PM in the far west city of Kashgar, while the capital Beijing is already asleep in the dead of night. And this all happened because in 1949, after the Chinese Communist Party established control over the country and the chairman Mao Zedong mashed together the 5 previous time zones into only one, Beijing Standard Time, for the purpose of "national unity".

in Xinjiang, when you make an appointment to meet someone, it may be important to make sure if it's in Standard (Beijing) Time or in the local Ürümqi Time.
Otherwise you might miss the appointment by two hour.

The good things is that on New Year’s Eve in Kashgar, the city could probably have a big celebration because lots of people over there can stay up until after midnight because of the sunrise and sunset being 3 hours later than Beijing with the sun up between 10:16 am - 7:41 pm on December 31st

    Western parts of China
Has more light in the evenings but they do lack mornings light according to the clock compared to Beijing
    Urumqi China on 27 April
    UTC+8
    Sunrise 7:08am
    Sunset 9:06pm
If clocks were set back 2 hours to ideal time zones which is UTC+6
    Sunrise 5:08am
    Sunset 7:06pm

if you fly in the opposite direction of the earth's rotation at the same speed as it rotates, will the time of day be the same?

I am Chinese, I grew up in Eastern China, and I belong to the Han ethnicity. However, I honestly HATE the idea of assigning one single time zone to such a big country. This is just ridiculous and I honestly don't think that this could offer any help to so-called unity.

It has nothing to do with size. Pay attention. It's about contiguous land masses. Not various separate territories.
