@@JayForeman HA! I've never gotten a reply directly from a creator before let alone one of my favorites on youtube! I know more about a city I don't live in than my own thanks to you!
If I recall, I believe I've heard that Arizona's timezone sectioning is even weirder than it first appears. The state does not follow daylight saving. But some native American reservations do. But within those reservations, there are small chunks of land (and I've even heard it's as granular as specific buildings) which are owned by government, thus being state or federal property, thus NOT following daylight saving. So a building is ignoring daylight saving, contained within a small-ish chunk of land that IS following daylight saving, contained within a state that IS NOT following daylight saving, contained within a country that IS following it.
Arizonian here. We(the rest of Arizona) do not care about what is happening on the reservation up there in NE Arizona because we do not go there and not too many folks actually live there. But mess around with DST and you might have a civil war on your hands.
@@madjayhawk Oh yeah totally. For those not on a reservation, no way should DST be a thing for Arizona. Just giving an example of how the separation of DST and non-DST areas can be like a Matryoshka doll.
@@madjayhawk Literally the opposite of what I said. I said Arizona should NOT go on DST: "For those not on a reservation, no way should DST be a thing for Arizona". As in those in Arizona but don't live on a reservation should never, ever use DST in the state.
I live in Indiana and here, we have towns in two different time zones and not every county follows daylight savings. It's incredibly confusing and any time you drive to another part of the state, you have to check what time it actually is there first or you'll be late/early.
I heard that there is a indiana gym in 2 time zones, at least part of the year. A thrown ball takes a hour to get from one side to the other or scores before it is thrown. Someone may verify this.
I remember living on border of the time zone in Northwest Indiana (LaPorte and Starke counties, for the curious) and having my phone jumping time zones depending on which cell tower it was picking up. This was years ago, mind you, but still lol. When I was young IIRC the whole state swapped timezones to avoid Daylight Savings, then the state adopted DST but Starke County (where I grew up) did not, and then eventually the county finally committed to EST/EDT.
Two points RE: Kiribati 1) It was Dec 30th they skipped, not Dec 31st. 2) The reason was due to trade with trade with Australia but due to administration within the country itself. Kiribati is made up of 3 Island groups, the Gilbert, Phoenix and Line Island. The 1st 2 groups were to the east of the International Date Line, the Line was to the West. Therefore if the Gilbert or Phoenix Island wanted to liase with the Line Islands they could only do so for 4 days of the week due to the International Date Line. On Dec 30th, the Line Islands moved to west of the International Date Line joining the other two Island groups as part of Kiribati. Samoa was the one that moved due to trade with AUS/NZL.

Morning, Noon, Afternoon, Evening, Night, etc. -The pride in which he announces the "time". Beautiful.
the production quality of your videos is always top notch! you guys never seem to miss the chance to go the extra mile! where others would use some stock photo or simple graphic overlay (at best!) you actually go shoot on location just for couple of seconds of footage!
My favorite timezone / DST trivia is about Arizona. Arizona does not observe DST, but the Navajo reservation inside it does. Now here's the kicker: inside the Navajo reservation lies the Hopi reservation which does not observe DST. The cherry on top is that inside the Hopi reservation there is an enclave of the Navajo reservation which does observe DST. So if you would drive from New Mexico (observing DST) to that little Navajo enclave, you would have to switch from DST to non-DST or the other way around 4 times.
One Important Fact which I think is missed, is the Fact, that because of Kiribati's weird Timezones like UTC+14, sometimes there are 3 different days of the week at the same time
@@JayForeman The story goes like this: Spain wanted to 'help' Germany in WW2, but they weren't able to give nothing more than volunteers (Spanish civil war just ended a few months before WW2 started). As a token gesture, Spain changed their time zone to Germany's, and it has stayed like this ever since. You just have to look at the time zone map to see that Spain should be an hour behind.

Kiribati's shift was also motivated by tourism considerations--the islands extended far to the east of the IDL and thus would have been the first location to enter the new millenium in 2000 (or 2001).
Krok Krok The sun sets later in the west, and there's no local time difference, so if it sets at 23:00 in Beijing, then it would set at 26:00 (fight me) at the border with Afghanistan.
Those horizontal lines follow state lines (e.g. the horizontal red line for example follows the border between Queensland, NSW, Southern Australia and the NT). I’m assuming this is just to keep each state roughly in its own time zone for the sake of simplicity. Kinda silly, but not nearly as silly as some of the ones mentioned in this video.
It's to do with trade. Broken Hill in NSW does trade with Adelaide which is much closer than Sydney so it follows SA time zones. NT does trade with QLD and is so far north it doesn't recognise daylight savings.
The Central Time Zone is odd enough - it should be GMT +9 (Western is +8 and Eastern is +10) but it's actually +9.30. But in summer South Australia adopts daylight saving (+10.30) while the Northern Territory doesn't. And in the Eastern Time Zone Queensland also doesn't adopt it, while New South Wales, Victoria, the ACT and Tasmania do (+11), giving 5 time zones. And there's also an unofficial 'Central Western Time Zone' (+8.45) around the WA/SA border village of Eucla.
Friends of mine had three boys, and to help get them out the house for school on time, the kitchen clock was always set 5 minutes fast. They never told the boys, but eventually they twigged and it became known as Sinderby Time. (That's the name of their village). Even though the boys have all left home for pastures new, they still use Sinderby Time.

Ian Austin i was scrolling through the thread, hoping someone would mention Newfoundland! I grew up and now live again in the MetroDetroit area, where we enjoy life near the border with our friends in Canada, and watching the CBC; whenever they had ads for upcoming shows, they would mention the starting time and inevitably had “one half-hour earlier in Newfoundland”!
Inhabitants of New Zealand's Chatham Islands scoff at your over-simplified half-hours. Their clocks are set a quarter of an hour ahead of those on the "mainland".
In South Dakota, the Missouri River forms part of the time zone border between Central and Mountain time. This puts the state capital of Pierre (pronounced "peer") on Mountain Time, whereas the contiguous "sister city" of Fort Pierre is on Central Time. Since a lot of people commute from one part of the metro area to the other, you can imagine how confusing that might be for scheduling events.
My favourite - and nearest - time zone oddity is the ferry crossing from Quebec into Newfoundland. St. Barbe in Newfoundland is on UCT-3:30 and Blanc Sablon in Quebec is on UCT-5:00. If you leave Blanc Sablon and head east on the hour and a half ferry ride to St. Barbe you arrive at the same time you left. If you go west you arrive 3 hours after you left on your 1 and a half hour ferry ride.
I feel somewhat ripped that you didn't mention Australia's colossally embarassing time zone situation where we go during the non-DST times from three sensible time zones, to during DST winding up at about eleven.
@@CopyableOakI stayed at Mundrabilla station for a while, which is very near to the border at Eucla, and at the time the road crew re doing the Eyre highway was set up nearby and close to the Mundrabilla roadhouse. Eucla was on one timezone, the roadhouse was on another, the road crew was yet another and the family of five at Mundrabilla station were on their own timezone. Each was about 15 minutes apart.

Having been born and raised in Arizona, I have lived this my whole life. The split time zones in the north are because the Navajo tribe are split across multiple states and chose to be on daylight savings and Arizona does not. The insert inside that stays on Arizona time is the Hopi tribe, a different reservation. What you didn’t note is there is actually a Navajo nation tribal island inside the Hopi reservation. So it’s possible to have az time, daylight time, az time and back to daylight time in an hour drive.
@@manasim.9936 Their islands' highest points are only around a metre above sea level, so sea level rise is a big concern for them. Even just a small rise takes a big bite out of their usable land. 2:24 The reason why Arizona is like that is because reservations have a lot of independence to decide on local laws. Arizona doesn't observe daylight saving time. But the Navajo Nation does observe it. Technically that's not part of Arizona but it's own thing. It exists as an exclave inside more states that do observe it. The Hopi though, the enclave inside the Navajo Nation, do obverse daylight saving times. I visited the Arizona part of the Navajo nation during DST, and businesses on either side of the border will post their hours in both times, and basically anything scheduled uses both. They usually call it Navajo and Arizonan time.

The Arizona time zone issue comes about for a number of reasons: - in the northern summer, Arizona (the state) does not observe daylight savings, unlike the rest of the states in Mountain Time Zone. - Arizona has a large number of Native American communities, particularly in the northeast of the state. - The Navajo nation choose to observe daylight savings - The Hopi nation choose not to (like the majority of Arizona) - The Hopi have two distinct land areas, while the Navajo have one large area, and a series of small enclaves (and exclaves) in the southern part of their lands. So as they stated in the video, you can drive in and out of different time zone within a short distance during the American summer. This plays havoc with tourists attempting to visit Native American attractions at appointed tour times during this period.
Woo, a Map Men on time zones! Two of my favorite things together! Also yep, as an Arizona Resident, the Time Zone issues are due to native american reservation enclaves, which each disagree on whether or not to follow DST...anyways, great video as always, and I can't wait for more Map Men!

I'm only slightly upset that Canada wasn't mentioned cus Newfoundland has a stupid 30 minute date line all for themselves but AZ got mentioned for having silly DST rules
And here in Australia we have the Central Time Zone, 30 minutes behind Eastern Time Zone which is also observed in the town of Broken Hill which is New South Wales (eastern Time Zone) but close to the border. Then there is the issue of Daylight Saving Time, which not every state observes, which menas we end up with 5 "zones" in Summer. I think India is also a member of the 30-minute club.

Interesting choice by the mapmaker to have Dawson City as the Yukon's representative on the time zone map. Also, one odd time zone thing heard regularly on CBC Radio and TV is on the lines of "Tonight at 7PM, 7.30 in Newfoundland." Due to the island being only 30 minutes adrift from the Maritimes and Labrador.
Great episode. I was at the National Railway Museum and couldn’t believe it when learning that different parts of the UK had different times until the 19th century. Some rail stations had differing clocks in the same station, for crying out loud!

Congratulations, your ability to view this piece of media at an hour proximate to that at which the creator permitted the public to behold it is certainly an achievement.
I once traveled from New York to Israel on New Years Eve, quite literally flying past the time zones. After the new year had reached New York, I landed in a country that doesn't use the Gregorian calendar. Probably the closest I'll ever get to time travel.
It doesn’t use the Julian calendar either. Well, sort of. The religious calendar has ciycles of 29 days for the months and a weird 13 year cycle where leap months are inserted at specific times. Paradoxically this is more accurate than the Gregorian calendar. Financial transactions are done according to the Gregorian calendar. The newspaper has both calendars so you know.
I think Australia's Eucla takes the cake for silliest time zone. It is used by a town of 50 people on the border between Western Australia (UTC+8) and South Australia (UTC+9:30), so they split the difference and set the clocks to UTC+8:45.

@@JouvaMoufette Why should Arizona go on DST?
@@madjayhawk Literally the opposite of what I said. I said Arizona should NOT go on DST: "For those not on a reservation, no way should DST be a thing for Arizona". As in those in Arizona but don't live on a reservation should never, ever use DST in the state.
@@JouvaMoufette The virus has scrambled my brain. We can fight in the streets against DST together then.
The cult show "Eerie Indiana" had a fun episode about that.
@@MaxArturo Ooooh! I need to see that!

Oh man, the first 16 seconds aren't just super-hilarious, they were well-designed and clearly went through multiple phases of creation (or the person who wrote the script is just a genius.)
-The fact that it's both steam-powered and digital, with a printer read-out--what a frankensteinian humongous invention
-"Let me just decode the..." not finishing this sentence helps to add to the realism AS WELL AS not having to nail down the watch "technology" to anything too specific
-The fact that he had to take out his phone to decode the time, when the time is on his phone anyways
-The success sound indicating the system is working as expected
-The fact that the precision is only, like up to a 1/6th of the day. Morning, Noon, Afternoon, Evening, Night, etc.
-The pride in which he announces the "time".
Beautiful.

Are we just not going to mention Australia’s horizontal time zones

True, but for most SDans, the time shift happens at Murdo which is on I-90.
My favourite - and nearest - time zone oddity is the ferry crossing from Quebec into Newfoundland. St. Barbe in Newfoundland is on UCT-3:30 and Blanc Sablon in Quebec is on UCT-5:00. If you go west you arrive 3 hours after you left on your 1 and a half hour ferry ride.
It the same with 1 hour flight from London to Amsterdam, and its hardly surprising tbh

The Arizona time zone issue comes about for a number of reasons:
- in the northern summer, Arizona (the state) does not observe daylight savings, unlike the rest of the states in Mountain Time Zone.
- Arizona has a large number of Native American communities, particularly in the northeast of the state.
- The Navajo nation choose to observe daylight savings
- The Hopi nation choose not to (like the majority of Arizona)
- The Hopi have two distinct land areas, while the Navajo have one large area, and a series of small enclaves (and exclaves) in the southern part of their lands.
