Too young to have witnessed 15-1 in '98? That was even better. Even '17 seemed like a very charmed year (especially after the Minneapolis Miracle), they had the #1 defense & the 1st time they went 13-3, better than '09's 12-4. I really think that if Sydney Rice was healthy in 2010, we would have been a 10-6 team. Fabre and Rice had such a great chemistry, losing him for the 2010 season killed us
That would have been fucking awesome to watch, Favre throwing bombs downfield for Moss to snatch out of the air. If Randy Moss were in that team with a healthy Sydney Rice on the other side and Favre throwing to them they would have had a chance at being one of the most potent offenses ever. Plus it would have been pretty fucking cool seeing Favre throwing to Moss instead of playing against him. Even almost a decade later it is still so weird seeing Favre in a purple Vikings jersey, particularly the Vikings 2 games against the Packers. If you would have told people back in the early 2000's that Favre wasn't going to stay a Packer his entire career and that he was going to sign with the arch rival Vikings I don't think anyone would have believed you, lol. Those God damn cheese eating Packer bastards sure have gotten lucky at QB in the last 25 years. Seriously though, they have only had 2 starting QB's (outside of the few starts through the years that Rodgers missed to injury), and both those QB's will be among the top 5 or 10 QB's all time when all is said and done. Even if you hate the Packers you have to admit how crazy it is that they went from one hall of fame QB who played with them for years and years, then he decides to leave Green Bay only for another future hall of fame QB to replace him and play for years. I don't think there is a team in NFL history that had fewer starting QB's over an almost 30 year span. There are teams who start more than 2 QB's every other week, just look at Cleveland; they have close to 30 QB's who have started at least one game since they relaunched the franchise in the late 90's, lol.
Vikings were the most complete team that year hands down, and would have had the best record in the nfl if chestor taylor didn't let the ball pop off his hands resulting in a game ending pick that handed the steelers a win, a pick that was not Favre's fault at all. One of Favre's greatest seasons of his career if not his greatest. You can see the perfection of the first td throw to rice, while a defender blitzing Favre's face. Vikings best team in the 2009 season hands down. Refs screwed them, saints were cheaters and cheap shots, in my mind theres an asterisk on their super bowl win.
I am a die hard Packers fan and what happened to Minnesota that year was total BULLSH*T. The Saints set out to hurt top players INTENTIONALLY. There were calls made that were beyond pathetic. The whole thing was a joke. The Vikings should have been the champions that year, plain and simple.
If AP didn't fumble the ball in that overtime game against the bears who knows what could of happened. If the vikings scored that drive they would have won and got homefeild advantage
I got to see him play his last GB year in Dallas, the next year with the Jets in Nashville, and this 09 season with the Vikings in St Louis. All were great games. The one in Dallas Favre got hurt and it was the first time we got to see Aaron Rodgers play almost a full game. Us Packer fans were all pleasantly surprised with how well he played. Kept us in it pretty much the whole game. That was the TO year in Dallas when they had a damn good team. Last season in the old Texas stadium
@@supersexysega - except that if your kicker made those 2 FGs, it would've been a 1 score (17-9) game & the Cowboys had the ball really late in the 3rd. Now after some more seasoning as a Vikes fan, you should now realize they can win all the Wild Card & Divisional games they want. They just can't ever win an NFC title game & I fear the only home title game I will ever see is the one from '98, being it was the year of Randy Moss & he made that all possible. We'll never see anything like that again. Our Super Bowl is the NFC title game. If we ever did win it, just being in the real Super Bowl would be icing on the cake. SKOL!
Funny you say that, these stupid Cowboy fans here in Dallas complain that Troy is always hating on his former team. Never understood that lol. So maybe he is really objective
They were not in Longwell range. He hadn't hit one from that distance all year. The brilliant Brad Childress sent 12 men on the field the play before and they were penalized 5 yards. Otherwise they would have kicked.
Favre is the greatest improvisor in the history of the game. Read the thread before commenting. It may take 5 minutes, and for that I apologize. But then you can comment intelligently.
This still hurts to watch. I watched this game like 6 times before the next game vs the saints... percy got his migraines that week and one look into his eyes you could see the pain he was in, he fumbled in that game. Vikings turned it over 5 times and we are in disbelief a decade later
As a Dallas fan I must say I don't know how the hell the 09 Vikings didn't win it all that year. They were such a solid team on both sides of the ball.
6:38 - "That's brett favre doing what he's done his entire career." That same "Favre" play was the one that cost them a trip the the super bowl one game later. Live by the Favre, die by the Favre.
I guess you don't remember the game really. His interception didn't cost anything. With current field position it was 52 yarder which was pushing it for longwell. Anyway first down , run 0 yards... Second down same thing... Timeout and then 12 men on field. So now 57 yarder is a no go. .. it was 3rd and 15 and they needed yards. Throwing it away changes nothing.
Kristopher Kubsh it actually was going to be a 55 not a 57 as they were on the 38 yard line. Longwells long that year was 52 and career 55. If Favre ran out of bounds he could have picked up 3 or 4 yards, and he has someone in front of him at the 32 yard line. If he lead the throw out of bounds the recipient could have caught it. That would have been a 50 yarder. Longwell could have done it.
@@tozen7734 That 2009 defense was ranked 2nd. The year b4 that defense lead the league in sacks with 61 and tied third in takeaways. This team 100% deserved a Super Bowl win. Breaks my heart. Ray Edwards had just an insane game. I don’t ever recall a Vikings team being this talented. They were more loaded and a more complete team than the 98 Vikings. Allen, the Williams wall, Winfield, Hutchinson, McKinney, AP, Taylor, Favre, Shiancoe, Rice, and Harvin. What a team.
The following season the Saints were punished for cheating throughout the playoffs and attempting (with success) to injure several hall of fame quarterbacks, the overtime rules for playoff games were changed to prevent anyone getting screwed over in OT like Minnesota did, and the game has yet to ever be re-aired amid the terrible officiating crew that literally won the NFC championship game for the Saints. The officiating crew has since been broken up and the Saints haven't come close to getting as deep in the playoffs without getting their hands held while officials look the other way. Minnesota meanwhile has returned to the playoffs on more than one occasion with teams that are only a shadow of this one. This game still gets re-aired on occasion, because it does an amazing job of highlighting the best team in the NFL that year.
Ephemis Priest I believe the saints should have been disqualified from playing the rest of the season after they found out they were purposefully trying to injure other players.

I was never so sure of a Minnesota Viking team like I was with the 2009 Vikings. they had an absolutely loaded offense, and Brett Favre running it. and a deep, and talented defensive line. still remember saying to myself, "this is it, this is the year." which makes it even more stunning how awful that season ended for the '09 Vikings.
I take it you weren't around to witness the '98 season when they went 15-1 (lost 1 game against a good Bucs team in TB 27-24) & scored the most points in history at that time. The whole Vikes offense was pretty much the NFC Pro Bowl team & they had some very good pieces on defense (John Randle, Jerry Ball, Ed McDaniel, Dwayne Rudd (guy was really fast), Dixon Edwards, Robert 'dropped 2 interceptions on the final Falcons drive in regulation when they ended up scoring a TD to tie & go to overtime' Griffith, Orlando Thomas, Corey Fuller & Jimmy Hitchcock, who they got before the season & he turned in a really good year before flaming out. All the stars were aligned & then poor team & clock management (Robert Smith running out of bounds stopping the clock for the Falcons at least twice on the drive before Wide Left) & a missed FG gave the Falcons an opportunity & they took it from them. John Randle played injured & was a non-factor in the NFC title game because Dennis Green wasn't a very good head coach (solid man however) & left him in when up by 20 at the end of the Cardinals Divisional game & he got injured. If you have yet to watch Minnesota Vikings: Legacy of Failure, you should check it out. It's actually kind of funny
@@bifftannen1598 as good as the '98 team was, Dennis Greens decision making process in the playoffs was something i didn't really trust. And got proven right again when he had Randall Cunningham take a knee at the end of regulation in the NFC Championship.
@@deanladue3151 - I agree. With Randy Moss on the team with the ability to win jump balls & get interference calls, they should've at least tried 1 deep ball to see if they could get in FG range at the end. Not trying that was inexcusable by Green. But even if they would've been able to try a game winning FG, it probably would've been blocked & returned for a game winning TD considering it's the Vikings
@@bifftannen1598 possible that he may lost his nerve, and he had just seen his secondary get absolutely shredded by Chris Chandler on Atlantas game tying drive. I think he felt the game was slipping away from them at end of regulation, and decided to take his chances in OT, but we may never know the real answer. And that Viking secondary was compromised when they started rookie corner Ramos McDonald, the Falcons went after McDonald pretty much the entire game.
@@deanladue3151 - That's right. I kinda forgot about McDonald having to be in there. He was in for Fuller, right? That Chuck Smith strip sack fumble recovery right before the 1st half was THE turning point that helped keep the Falcons in it the rest of the way. I liken it to when Rocky 1st drilled Drago & cut him. I was always leery of Cunningham's throwing motion & thought someone would eventually get their hand on it at some point because he puts his arm so far back. I think the end of the 1st half was also a great moment to illustrate Green's lack of coaching. With a 13 point lead, it would've been wise to try shorter, controlled passes and draws & eat up the clock to make sure they go in to halftime with a double digit lead & maybe have a shot at extending the lead to 23-7 if they got in FG range, rather than have Cunningham take a deep drop & wind up like he did, leaving himself more vulnerable to turnovers. With injuries (Randle, Ed McDaniel & Orlando Thomas) & inexperience (Wong, McDonald) on defense piling up, pounding Smith & Hoard more was warranted, especially when they had double digit leads. I get the feeling that if the Vikes had eeked out a win that Terrell Davis would've run for 200 yards on them with their depleted defense & Denver would've had 40 minutes time of possession
Sad part about this game is that it was a sign of things to come. After going 6-10 the following year, they were 8-8 the remaining 3 seasons and finally won a playoff game against the Lions in the Wild Card game in 2014, after a 12-4 season.
Thanks Funkydunkleman. This was a fantastic game for Favre. He still had the talent after leaving the Packers. They should have kept him a few more years.

Many people say "Well, Farve made a bone head play"; but what QB would even be functional in the 4th quarter with all those viscious, illegal hits? At least illegal today, thank goodness. Farve had such great chemistry with guys like Moss that season, and was enjoying the game and playing like a 25 year old. His Vikings were robbed, and Minny STILL doesn't have a Super Bowl Title. This Vikings team was so entertaining. Favre, Peterson, Allen, Hutchinson, Kevin Williams hofers. Ton of personalities. Several great games throughout the year, some with great stories. Even without a Super Bowl this goes down as one of the most enjoyable teams of all time.

I really think that if Sydney Rice was healthy in 2010, we would have been a 10-6 team. Fabre and Rice had such a great chemistry, losing him for the 2010 season killed us
I wonder what would have happened if Moss came back to Minnesota in the 2009 Season. (Season when we went to the NFC Championship).
The Packers owned that season
If Prime Favre Stepped Onto The Field In 2009 Knowing Full Well What He Has To Do
Future Gohan if lol

I got to see him play his last GB year in Dallas, the next year with the Jets in Nashville, and this 09 season with the Vikings in St Louis. All were great games. SKOL!

6:38 - "That's brett favre doing what he's done his entire career."
That same "Favre" play was the one that cost them a trip the the super bowl one game later.
Kristopher Kubsh not to mention Longwell was 8 for his last 8 from 50 plus.

The following season the Saints were punished for cheating throughout the playoffs and attempting (with success) to injure
several hall of fame quarterbacks, the overtime rules for playoff games were changed to prevent anyone getting screwed over in OT like Minnesota did, and the game has yet to ever be re-aired amid the terrible officiating crew that literally won the NFC championship game for the Saints.

The Favre Rice short lived matchup, is still one of my favourite matchups overall! GPG!!! F4L💚💛💚💛

Actually, Brett did. All he had to do was throw it away or run with it and Longwell would've booted that field goal in that dome. Can't blame bounty on that one. Favre's a fucking legend for staying in that game though
I sure am! Bountygate had almost everything to do with that loss.
can't blame Bountygate on rendering Favre injured (fractured ankle) at a critical moment of the game leading him to force a throw (intercepted) rather than run 5 yards into field goal range....
right?
RandomMikael sucks to suck. Packers have 13 rings. Vikings have 0
POKE ASH I see your counting National championships, well then the Vikings have 1
give us the full games man come on
1:27 Gerald Sensabaugh still looking for the ball
Coming from Texas and only being 9 at this time, I can truly say this was one of my first sports heartbreaks ever... still not as bad as UT and Bama in the championship, that one hits hard
Coming from Texas, my 1st heartbreak, I was 8 during the 1994 nfc championship game. Cried myself out
“That’s Brett Favre. How long has been rolling to his right and throwing back across his body over the middle of the field, which is a no-no, and doing it with great success?”
Thanks a bunch, Joe.
When can I get this Vikings team on madden? They need to put throwback teams on madden too!!
This is one of my favorites games I was able to see live. The fact the media was nearly unanimously saying Cowboys were going to win this game. Nevermind the fact that the Vikings were undefeated at home that year and they dominated at home winning the last 5 home games by at least 17 points. The stadium was so damn loud that game it was crazy.
Nobody picked Dallas to win this game. Vikings were the better team and they deserved to win so stop making fake stuff up about Dallas being favored!!! Hopefully (I didn’t say definitely) Dallas can end their divisional woes tomorrow!!!
@@SinaSoh You are simply wrong. I am not talking vegas. Vikings were obviously favored with the gamblers. I am talking the ESPN prognosticators. And I am saying the majority of the "experts" on the air picked the Cowboys. Obviously some picked Vikings too. The player I was most worried about was Demarcus Ware.
@@matt4787 nobody picked Dallas to win. Almost everyone (myself as a Cowboys fan included) expected it to be Vikings vs Saints in the NFC title game (which it turned out to be). Maybe those analysts wanted the Cowboys to win (amazing for ratings) but the Vikes had Favre and he was a good draw as well!!!
@@SinaSoh the commentators always bash the vikings. and rarely do they unanimously pick the vikings to win games. its actually kinda crazy how much hate and negative commentary the vikings receive. not to mention how badly they are screwed by horrible officiating.
@@SinaSoh There was a decent amount in various media saying that the Cowboys were playing better football the last quarter of the season and thought they would beat Minnesota in the playoffs. Anybody with half a brain though knew the Vikings weren't losing at home to Dallas.
Love this game
2009 Vikings were really fucking good, it's a shame they couldn't make the SuperBowl because of the cheating Saints! However Brees did deserve his ring.
The Vikings beat themselves with so many turnovers too. I found strange they were in position to win it despite the turnovers.
Well, they outgained the Saints by a ton! Without the turnovers, they may have blown them out. But it's the Vikings. Destined for disappointment. I've been a fan since 1969 and really wonder if I'll ever get to see them win a Lombardi. Even when they were 5-0 last season, I had no doubt they would crash and burn. You can't survive with an O-line that dreadful.

He couldn't beat those 90's Cowboys! 😎🎸
You can hear how dumb Joe buck is. He praises AP for his pass blocking ability. :(
Mitchell.... Mitchell.... Mitchell... and down at the 25.
The next quarter back the Vikings draft should look at Brett Farvre's game play and learn how to play the position like him.
Best part was Keith Brookings whining to Favre about running up the score at the end. What a loser.
Favre was a legend, I wish they'd won the SB that year, he deserved to go out on top with 2 rings, but still one of the greatest.
1:22 that pass was so on point, fell right into the WRs arms, defender didnt even know there was a ball lol, he got caught way off guard the wr didnt even have to move his arms. #43 was like wtf just happened
Brett farve was one of the toughest qbs in history.
The toughest SOB in NFL history!
Even tougher than Steve Austin.
I always wanted to ask, do cowboy defenders throw games?
Anybody remember Bradshaw crying after the game because the Vikings kept scoring?

The magic of Favre is the only reason Rice ever got paid. He did nothing before or after #4 made him a Pro Bowler.
I was at this game and it was probably one of the most perfect games I've ever seen the Vikings play! The Cowboys game out on the field so cocky, so it was a pleasure to see the Vikings just destroy them!
