Karrin is captivating. Our finest interpreter of American jazz & quaity popular music. And an astonishing interpreter of the Brazilian songbook. Her albums "From Paris to Rio" and "Imagina" helped get me into Brazilian music. And her voice is so beautiful, expressive, sublime. She makes everything she sings her own.
You're right about that! Most people, for some strange reason, have never even heard of her. She was an instructor at a Vermont jazz camp that I attended a few years ago (vocals, of course), and I saw her in concert a couple of years ago down in Ft. Lauderdale, FL She was fantastic and is a very, very good piano player as well.
This charming singer is so good I just stop and listen to her, the music and the musicians. It never fails to calm my way too often cluttered life. I own several of her albums and they represent a treasured part of my music library. This particular song has always had its way with me and Karrin totally captivates me with her rendition. I also have an acoustically perfect music room. The sound comes from all directions. Listening to her music has all my inner gyroscopes spinning in harmony. Have I said enough?
I caught Karrin some yrs ago at Steamers Jazz Cafe in Southern Ca on a Fri or Sat evening working with some local LA musicians & I stayed for all 3 sets as Karrin Allyson & Co. were fabulous
I agree. I think it's the best American popular song of all time. And Karrin performs it exquisitely. I've been privileged to see her at many venues, including Blues Alley in DC, where this was recorded.
I as well... the original 1965 recording with Tony Bennett & Jazz pianist, Jimmy Rowles on piano with Johnny Mandel conducting the orchestra with his arrangement with Jack Sheldon on trumpet was my intro into this American songbook gold nugget
Many a New Day: Karrin Allyson Sings Rodgers & Hammerstein". #JazzVocals
The shadow of your smile When you are gone Will color all my dreams and light the dawn Look into my eyes my love and see All the lovely things you are to me Our wistful little star was far too high A teardrop kissed your lips and so did I Now when I remember spring All the joys that love can bring I will be remembering The shadow of your smile
I grew up singing and loved, from afar, Lana Cantrell, for the majority of my life, and I hope she won't mind (although I hate her political views), but as I was going through jazz singers because nasty fans think Angelina Jordan is the best ever, even over Whitney Houston, I discovered this woman, and I really like her and she has a really nice voice, and as I was saying (yes, this is grammatically horrid), she has a Lana vibe! I enjoyed this a lot.
I heard Everybody's Cryin' Mercy on the radio, got hooked

The shadow of your smile
When you are gone
Will color all my dreams
and light the dawn
Look into my eyes my love and see
All the lovely things you are to me
Our wistful little star was far too high
A teardrop kissed your lips and so did I
Now when I remember spring
All the joys that love can bring
I will be remembering
The shadow of your smile
