About BrownMark: Born to the name Mark Brown in the Bronx, funk-rocker BrownMark is forever a son of Minneapolis. A working musician since high school, at age 19 Mark Brown was rehearsing with his band Phantasy when he was cold-called by Prince to audition for his band in the summer of 1981. Mark Brown joined the band that would soon be called The Revolution, and he was rechristened by Prince as BrownMark.

Mark, help me out... I've been trying to cop the bass tone on "Put A Smile On Your Face" since '88! It's not intrusive and gives the song just the right amount of punch without dominating the song. I need that... Help a bro. Oh, and if you have any ideas on how Jesse did the bass on "She I Can't Resist", that would help me out as well. I used a bass filter, but naw... Is it gated, midi, or key layered?

If Mark's interpretation of this line is good enough for Prince -- then it's good enough for me! Thanks for sharing the secret sauce Mark. (I'm gonna need "Head" and "Lady Cab Driver" as well.)

@@onyxsafira2813 I don't think he played on any of them. Prince asked him, but he was doing his own thing by then. Dr. Fink, however, did become part of the NPG for a short while. It's overlooked, but a lot of the Dirty Mind keyboard work was done by Fink. Prince had a lot of respect for Fink's talents. Probably more than any other of the Rev players who think they were more influential.

@@AlexanderNevermind888 You meant Mark turned Prn down to tour w/him because Mark had gone solo at that time? I thought prn did al the keyboard on dirty mind album. I saw/hear here in Sippi part of a band that had a couple Prn musicians(the Time/the Family) that I actually got to informally interview! at a Grammy Q&A tour. One of them(Paul) invited me to a show that night. I went anxiously(I hate bars) & he dedicated a song to me! 💚 A very rare highlight of my life.

    • @AlexanderNevermind888

@@onyxsafira2813 Prince did all the keyboard work on Dirty Mind, but he got a lot of the sync riffs from Fink just jamming in the studio. Fink was an unbelievable keyboard player, and I think a lot of his work with Prince went unstated because he just appreciated being around Prince's talent and had love for the music. He also did some work with the Time back in the day. I would have loved to have been at that show with the Family. Their original album definitely deserves a remaster. It was pure fire.

I recently just now picked up a bass. I’ve been wanting to learn. I’ve mastered piano but I’ve always wanted to play bass then guitar but I knew to start at bass first and you’ve always been an inspiration me and now that my mind is seriously commits and I know about the many hours of practicing because I did it on piano also - well this venture will be special to me to see how quickly I learn and all I will go through. Indeed. The part a lot of bass players rush is the Ab - A (6th and min7) on the D string. It's got to be played unrushed, and in a way where you can still hear the fretted B on the E string ringing beneath it :-) You and Larry Graham are the ones to watch to see how to finger it, so that lower note you're fretting still rings beneath the 6th and min7. The ringing makes it sound like it's an open string...but it's actually a fretted one.
