Much love for this. If you are still doing the Prince thing, I love America but, the bass line is down in the mix. It's difficult to actually hear what's going on. Another funky Prince cut that he just goes off on is Alpha bet street and Batdance.

Hey - not sure if my other response came through - I' did it on my phone. The alder is "warmer" sounding than ash/maple which can be a bit "brighter" sounding. HOpe that helps!

of course not ! u nailed the feel and thats what counts. Some of them Minneapolis bass lines are almost impossible to pintpoint. Like Morris Day - Fishnet, what in the world is Terry Lewis actually doing apart from the obvious notes lol

There are so many songs that i realize that I'd been playing "wrong" for years until I either had to play them with the original artist, someone from their camp or just insights like yours. That's why I try to be super clear that whatever I post is "how I hear it". You know 777-9311 is tricky like that too. I wish I knew what the effect was on the original. I mostly defer to live recordings and how I've seen Prince play it. Thanks for your insights bro. No offense taken in the least.
