  • PLEASE SUBSCRIBE .This is the finished product after the old steam radiator from my other video was sandblasted primed and painted, basicaly totaly refurbished and converted for use in a presurised hot water system. The water is heated by my wood gasification boiler. I refurbished a total of 10 radiators and I heat my house for free with the wood boiler. Please check my other videos for details of the boiler and the entire system.
Also PLEASE SUBSCRIBE to my channel and ask questions. Thanks for watching

Your videos saved my wife and I A LOT of money. We ran across a barn full of "steam" radiators and obtained them very cheap. By following your instructions we are able to change from a regular fuel oil furnace to a boiler system. Thank you for taking the time to post these videos. I almost turned down the radiators in the beginning because I had heard that steam and water ones were different. Sincerely, Jeff & Renee

And the orange plastic pipe is a nice touch - it finishes off that vintage look.

This would be more efficient if the return were piped into the bottom at the opposite end to achieve a cross flow. And put a vent at the top above the return connection to better eliminate all the air. There isn't enough pressure in the system to blow it out.

hi Job , I'm learning a lot. . Next do you think you could show me how the furnace is hooked up. and how all the pex piping hooks up to it? and how all that works, like how it heats the water and stuff thanks PJ

very helpfull. What happens to control the temperature if you dont use the thermostatic valves? why do you say you didnt need to install them?

Enjoyed the video.Thank you. Don't you need air bleeder valves?

I like your ideas. I am looking to convert my old black pipe to pexalpex.I see that you used 1/2 line to your radiator. Did you run 1/2 for the whole system from a manifold ??? Or did you run a heavier trunk line and then reduce to 1/2???

Hello, I am renovating my basement and am replacing the baseboard rads with cast iron. My question is, all baseboard rads in the basement are on a single loop. Can I simply put the cast iron rads with a thermostatic valve into the looped system without affecting the flow in the other rooms? In other words, if I shut off room A, will it affect rooms B and C? Is there some kind of re-routing I need to do or is each cast rad now going to be piped individually? Thank you

because i have a central thermostat that controls the entire zone so i have all the valves set to the highest temperature. It doesnt hurt to have them though

nice job on painting cast radiator You should install thermostatic control valve horizontally not verically . I get my valves in Europe every time I go on vacations :) there is about half price than here .For modern look I imported cast aluminum radiators that hung on the wall from china .any way great job and savings on heat bill .

    Very nice.
With 180° water flowing in, what is the temperature of the outside surface of the radiator, how hot to the touch?
    Thanks

175 degrees......what do you expect? You can run fans over the surface of the radiator to lower the temperature somewhat but you don't want to touch them. Many places still sell radiator guards and some old houses have custom built wood covers that double as seats/ plant shelves/ etc..

Hello, cool videos. I'm in the process of converting my steam heating system to a hot water system. I have radiators which can also be used for water heating. Did you clean (flush out) the inside of the radiators before putting them to use? If so, how did you do it, and/or what are your recommendations? I will be using a mod/con hot water boiler, and want to make sure I don't fill it with old steam radiator sludge. Also, what happens to the circulating water if all the thermo valves are shut because they've reached their set temperature? Thanks

Good questions! 1) After plugs were removed i used long wire brush to remove scale from the top and bottom tubes of the radiators. Then used compressed air to blow it out, worked great. 2) there is a special valve installed at the main manifold called a pressure differential valve that opens when thermostatic valves are closed. Watch my boiler videos and you can see how the valve is installed.

The pex pipe through the floor looks horrible. Why didn't you run copper? I think you did a great job with retrofitting the radiator though. I'm considering doing the same thing.

Totally agree. I don’t even like Copper. Galvanized steel, brass or bronze pipe as they were originally installed is the only way to go.

It would have added some minor additional complexity but I wouldn't use pex in exposed area.....not good looking and easily damaged.

That’s not regular hot water pex tubing is it?

    • @mrbig4532
      @mrbig4532 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Because it won’t last long running that 180 degree boiler water thru it , I know the guy at the supply house will tell you that the red pex is good up to 200 degrees but that’s not the reason it won’t last ... The expansion and contraction is what’s going to cause that pex to fail , they make plastic tubing for hydronic heating systems and it’s white but the color isn’t important it’s the material it’s made of that’s the difference. Good luck I hope it last 100 years for you but u might want to look into changing out that red pex . I have been doing this since I was in 10th grade during the summers and full time since I graduated which is 25 years now. Jesus 25 years I never really added up the years since I’ve been out of high school , no wonder all those 20 year old girls seemed creeped out !!! I’m just kidding they have to be at least 21 years old ..
