White Cloud Mountain Minnows are the new guppies

  • White Clouds have long been overlooked as a source for breeding new fish varieties. In this video, I go over the history of this old hobby favorite, how to keep, breed, and raise them, and how to identify traits to provide the foundation for new strains, like guppy breeders did long ago. To save the eggs of gold White Clouds, it helps to have a breeder box, which I described in my earlier video, at • Building a breeder box... .

    I just have to leave one more comment. In my humble estimation, this is by far the best and most educationally dense videos on the white cloud that exists. It deserves many more views and I suspect it will gain momentum

    I lived and worked in Guangzhou, China for a number of years and visited the Bayun Mountain. Unfortunately, the steams were completely devoid of all aquatic life due to pollution! There have however been two locations on the island of Hainan just of the southern coast of China. Their genetics as far as I’m aware have not been compared with the original strain found by Tan…

    I’ve been working with the white clouds for about a year now. I’m attempting to keep the bright blue line that the young have into the adults. I’ve gotten it to the point where it stay longer and I feel with a few more years I’ll be able to have the adults with the blue line still intact.

      Nuts For guppies Let me know how it works out. I tried doing that and ended up giving up. I think that as long as they have the bright blue, they can’t breed. I’m not 100% sure, though, and I hope I’m wrong. They would be absolutely beautiful if they kept that blue band.

    In shrimp I feel the Malawa Shrimp should get the same recognition. Over time their bland or colorless bodies transform to gold-speckled morphs, red-banded morph, or even a rusty-red color all over. However, I can't seem to isolate the individual color morphs like with White Mountain Clouds.

    Really informative video, thanks. I love white clouds, they're so pretty and interesting to watch and I don't know why they're not more popular (I have a theory it might be because they're so cheap to buy and elitists turn their noses up, lol). I'd love to keep some of my own but I'm stuck on what tankmates would be best/how to incorporate them in my main tank with all my favourites (corydoras and other bottom dwellers). I don't want to do a species only tank as I'm so short on space (tiny British house problems!).

    • @sonnysfishroom3241
      @sonnysfishroom3241  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They should do fine with your cories. Both like it cool and both like soft, acidic water. And they don’t need much space. A ten gallon tank will accommodate a small group of them.

    Thanks for the great video! I inherited a batch of White Clouds last year after some were mixed in with rosy cheeked minnows that I bought to control mosquitos in my pond. By the end of summer, I loved seeing all the babies but quickly realized they weren't rosy fry! I brought all of them inside for the winter and raised another batch this summer. I'm setting up a spawning tank now to try breeding them indoors this winter. Lots of good advice in your video!

    I haven't had one of these since I was a kid... over 40 years ago! I plan to set up some or at least one, big tub this summer. I've become aware that there have been no Asian fish imports in two years so as hobbyists, we are responsible for keeping the hobby going! I had a fish room but packed it up about 4 or 5 years ago, little did I know what was going to happen.

  • @davidgrant3115

    Very interesting , I keep a few in tubs outdoors here in the UK , the adults even survive with ice on the top so a very low temperure , they appear " happier " with a decent current flow so the tubs have small
    filters . As per Rachel O Leary they seem to breed better outdoors . Cheers

    • @sonnysfishroom3241
      @sonnysfishroom3241  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for sharing your observations. I don’t doubt that they do well outdoors. I don’t keep mine outside though, as our hot summers might be too much for them, and then there are the neighborhood raccoons, which previously have eliminated all of my yard fish.

    • @sonnysfishroom3241
      @sonnysfishroom3241  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Odysseas Froilan Thanks very much. I’m glad you think so. From the cross you describe, you could expect all the fry to look like the wild type. Fry would carry one gold gene and one wild type gene. If you cross these fish together, you would expect 25% gold fry and 75% wild type, assuming eggs/fry don’t get eaten.

    What size of tank would you recommend for a pair or small group of white clouds?

    • @sonnysfishroom3241
      @sonnysfishroom3241  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A five gallon would do well for a pair, with room left over. I sometimes breed a pair in a 2 1/2 gallon. For a small group, a ten gallon would be perfect. Keep up with water changes.

    • @sonnysfishroom3241
      @sonnysfishroom3241  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could probably do ok with 15 or 20 white clouds. Small barbs or minnows would do OK with them, or a few cories.

    Interesting. I have a group of fry that are now adults (50+) and I've noticed that the lateral line on some are a gold color and some are purple. Have you heard of this before? And would purple be a desired color? Thanks.

  • @arthurheine5631
    @arthurheine5631 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm planning on keeping white clouds on a indoor 100L (25 gallon) pond filled with perennial and floating plants. I plan on just leaving them there for months and let them multiply, but I saw that they eat their young. Do you think lots of roots and floating plants will help them breeding and keeping the eggs/fry alive?

    • @sonnysfishroom3241
      @sonnysfishroom3241  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you start with just one pair, they will probably multiply. I suspect-but can’t prove-that they won’t eat their own young, but will eat the young of other white clouds. They other thing that I think will improve fry survival is lots and lots of cover. Really dense plants, from top to bottom-including a thick carpet of floating plants. Watch my latest video on setting out summer tubs to see what I mean. Good luck.

      @@sonnysfishroom3241 thanks for the answer! I've been using water hyacinth because of it's thick root system for my guppy pond, and they've been breeding readily. I've never bred non-livebearing fish before (besides the occasional ember tetra fry that show up in my aquarium), and was wondering if the same method would work. It’s very hard to say. I’m not a veterinarian, and fish disease and disorders are very hard to diagnose. Plus, I haven’t seen the fish. From your description, my hunch is it’s not related to overeating-maybe it’s a swim bladder issue. I hope it resolves favorably.

    • @sonnysfishroom3241

      Yes: females are a little rounder in the abdomen than the males. Their dorsal fins are a little smaller, too. Males display for each other, females don’t. If you’re on Facebook, check out the White Cloud Dynasty page. Someone will be able to post a photo for you.

    I think you meant GH and KH about 2-3 instead of 20-30. At 4:09 . Rainwater mix of such hardness can be achieved only by mixing with liquid rock.

    • @sonnysfishroom3241
      @sonnysfishroom3241  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1prairiedog I checked the test strip again. The color match was mid way between the first color on the container, 0 and the next one up, 30 and 40, for GH and KH, respectively. So I estimated to 20-30. I’ll look into other kinds of tests for GH and KH. I would expect my rainwater to have lots of particulates in it though, since I’m in a heavily populated area.

      It’s hard to know. They are a tough fish that usually don’t get sick. You might try a dewormer, like levamisole. Without a fish vet to examine them, it’s just guesswork at this point.

    • @sonnysfishroom3241

      Yeah-it was in one of the commercial medicines I treated the rosy reds with. That was before the powerhead and prefilter, though, so they may have reinfected themselves. The other thing-it’s possible that whatever they had needed to be treated internally, and adding dewormer to the water column wasn’t enough.
