- A quick guide to a successful beginning keeping killifish. I cover the basics for a few readily available, easy-to-keep species: where to get them, and how to care for and breed them. I explain the difference between annual and non-annual species, with advice to avoid the latter until you get some experience.

I love killies. Besides being beautiful they are smart and hearty little fish. I keep 5-6 yellow wonder in female guppy tanks as a means to keep my guppy population in check .. and they do jump… keep a lid on your killies! ❤

I really enjoyed this video!! I'm a beginner with these fish! I have mainly focused on creating balanced natural planted aquariums... now that I'm having some true success, I'm looking into my first species only tank. I have several water features that attract mosquitoes in season, and I control them by netting egg rafts daily. I use them to feed fry, who eat them as they hatch.

Lots of really helpful info in this video! Thank you. I will be starting my first venture into caring for Killis this weekend and need all the little tidbits of info I can muster. Almost went for annuals, but decided against it even as a semi-experienced fishkeeper. Went with Aphyosemion australe and starting out with a pair in a 10gallon, might move em up to a 20 eventually as well once it frees up. Hopefully I can breed them and keep a colony going, they look amazing!
I don’t think A. australe will colony breed, so you may need to pick mops. Good luck with them.

My favorite fish store finally got the Gardneri, it only took two years of asking (I have only ordered fish online for the first time about a month ago). I got a trio, whoops. I knew they could jump but wasn't taking it as seriously as I should have. You may have saved my fish, thank you! Also, what you say as far as community tanks completely matches the behavior I've observed. Plus if it'll fit in their mouth, they are going to eat it! A few days ago I put them in their own tank, to breed them. Nothing was happening in the shared tank. I just went on instinct and set up a 5 gallon just for them. I have it set where half the tank gets enough light at one end where I have some broadleaf plants (meaning, nothing they'd see as breeding ground, hopefully), then it gets dimmer and dimmer to the other end of the tank, where the spawning mop is. Day 2, nine eggs. So if anyone is having breeding problems, maybe that will help. I guess I'll take one female out, fatten her up, switch girls out, and so on?
Sounds like a good plan. Another option is to put a pair in a tank, and cram it with java moss. It save the time you would spend picking mops, although you would probably get more fry by picking mops.
@@sonnysfishroom3241 I was thinking about trying something I do occasionally with my celestial pearls, which is load up a tank with java moss, let them have at it for a few days, then take the parents out. I have a much more efficient way for them though, and only do that when there's a lag in their libido and nothing else works. I may do that with the killies, see how it turns out!

I live in Las Vegas and have a 1000-gallon pond in my yard. I went to a nursery that sells plants for ponds and a decent sized tub with plants was also teaming with Bluefin Killifish. They didn't know how the fish got there but suspected the plants had eggs already attached. They were nice enough to scope out 25 of these fish and give them to me at no charge! They are thriving in my pond and even hatching fry which is pretty exciting! I have baby Bluefin Killifish swimming in and out of the plants. My question to you or anyone out there is: Will my Killifish survive the cold Las Vegas winter? the temps in LV during Dec-Feb can get as low as 50 degrees and 36 degrees over night. I would hate to lose these little guys as I have become very attached to them!
They could definitely handle temperatures in the 50s. They’re a subtropical species, so they have more cold tolerance than tropical species. I would bring some inside for the winter as insurance. They’ve evolved to handle once-in-hundred year cold snaps in Florida, but I’d still over winter some in a five or ten gallon tank as insurance.

Great video this is one breed of fish the killi fish I love the red chin killi I have had young of them I lost them due to old age I fance having a go with clown killi fish or the other name the rocket killi fish how many pairs of the yellow killi fish and the blue can you keep in different tanks as I have only got them and a few golden wonder I live in the United Kingdom and I don't see many other than the yellow Gardneri and the blue Gardneri and golden wonder
I don’t usually keep multiple pairs-my strategy is to start with one pair in a tank crowded with plants and or mops. Lots of young survive, so I end up with 20 or more fish in a U.S. ten gallon tank. So, to make a guess, I would try only two to three pairs in the same size tank. If you try it, could you let me know how it works out?

I couldn’t find any available in the US for some reason …
I hope they survive and I’m trying to learn as much as I can and get everything setup before they get here, which should be about 3-4 weeks I think..

Excelent video and very helpful. I am looking to keep an breed some Fundulopanchax scheeli. I live in South Florida and our water is on the hard side. Will they do well and breed without me having to alter the water? Thank you!
Thanks for watching! I have moderately hard water with high GH and pH 7.4-7.6. I don’t know for sure if they’ll breed at a higher hardness and pH, but I suspect they will. If not, try 50/50 tap and rain water. Good luck!

I’m getting a breeding pair today! They will have there own tank I just need to cycle it first! I’m putting them in my community 30 gallon, that has neon tetras, peppered Cory’s, ottos and a hillstream loach. I’ve heard many mixed reviews about them being in community tanks is this okay or will my fish be in danger ? The species is aphyosemion australe, I’ve heard mostly good things but need confirmation!
I haven’t tried them in a community tank, so I can’t say for sure. A lot of killies are feisty, so I would not be inclined to try them with the species you listed.
Now ordered 2 batches of eggs and set up a shelf on my rack will see how I get on 🤞

Had a golden killifish that live for 4 years, he was aggressive feeder, ate gohst shrimp etc, but he had an arched back, after awhile. Was it a genetic defect or was i negligent in proper care?
It’s hard to know. The fact that he lived so long suggests he was well cared for. Perhaps the curvature was a result on natural aging, a parasitic disease his immune system could no longer fend off, or a genetic defect. There is really no way to tell for sure.
I remember as a kid my dad bought some banded panchax (not knowing what they were) for our new tank...
They committed suicide first night.

I have native caught Blue Fin Kilis and these fish are amazing! Semi decent with shrimp, but they will attack if they get the chance.... But I have seen them for the most part be chill with them for the most part. That said, no babies.... lol

It depends on the species. Intraspecies aggression is a factor with many. Start with a lot of plant cover and low density-5-10 fish at most. Observe carefully and adjust stocking accordingly. Before you start, research the species you’re interested in.

How thick is the lexan for your tank lids? Does it warp?
After a year or two it will bow slightly, but warping isn’t a problem like with plexiglass. That’s been more of an issue with the 1/8 inch. The 1/16th inch hasn’t bowed at all.
Let me know if you need B Roll of Florida fish and I can see what I can do, so far I have caught these, Least Kilis, mosquito fish, darters, golden top minnows, mollies, obv bass, and invasive things like a wild caught female jewel cichlid I threw into my 700g stock pond I made for my backyard lol

Hi, I am new in keeping killifish and have a funny question here. I have found a seller in my area and I am interested in Fundulopanchax gardneri Nsukka. However, the seller only sells the eggs instead of the fishes. May I know if there are around 30 eggs, what is the percentage for the eggs to hatch successfully as I heard some people said that usually 1-2 eggs will be hatched successfully out of 50 eggs
That’s very difficult to say. There are a lot of variables that I can’t account for-temperature, water quality, shipping conditions, for example. I’ve known people who’ve had large hatches and others with not success at all.

I would think most species would be too aggressive for guppies. If you try them together, proceed slowly, watch them carefully, and be ready to intervene in a hurry, to keep the guppies from getting hurt or killed.
Why do they jump?
I don’t think anyone really knows. I think sometimes a jumper may be trying to get away from a more dominant fish. In the wild, killies and minnows may jump to get away predators.
Are there annual killifish in India?
Yes. There’s one in the video. The “Golden Wonder.”
Killi means stream. Kill means river.
