Whoever wrote the hashtag joke ended up accidentally making themselves sound like the very thing they were attempting to mock. Which I think is a very good way to define basically the whole show.
I haven't watched the show, but every review I've watched, none of the "jokes" they've shown come across as actual jokes. I'm reminded of the Simpsons episode where Homer gets a spot voice acting the new character on Itchy & Scratchy. There's all this hype and buildup, and then the reveal is his character is just a pathetic collection of dated buzzwords and catchphrases trying way too hard to be cool. The joke is how out of touch the character is. Everyone hates it. Every character on Velma feels like this only without the self realization of parody. They actually think it's good writing, not a parody of how bad bad writing can be
Admittedly I haven't seen the show either, but I can't get past the blatant laziness. For years people have been making jokes about Velma's sexuality, Fred being an asshole, Shaggy being a perceived pothead...the writers just perpetuate these annoying tropes while having the gall to claim them as their own.
That's a big part of its awfulness. Its fans claim it's satire but even if we grant that (and I think it'd be generous to do so), it's either bad, obnoxious, far-right meme-warrior stuff or it doesn't do enough to say 'This is satire!' and comes across as the thing it mocks.
@@UncannyValleyVideos I feel more like they just forced the sexuality part just for some “relatability” factor. I mean people that watch this show watch it because it’s like a spinoff of Scooby Doo right? Why take Scooby Doo and just change everything about the characters? Surely they know what nostalgia is
Obsessed how every single "review" of the show says "art style, phenomenal. Love you. You deserve the world." And then immediately to "I hate this show. It sucks. You deserve torture."
In What's new Scooby Doo, Daphne was pretty resourceful too. She made a car battery out of a water bottle, a hairpin, and a double A battery in the Desert Race episode
@@PerpleX_Plays Oh for sure, and in the OG Scooby Doo everyone still has their quirks. Velma notices things others may overlook, Fred makes traps and helps with the strats, Daphne would accidentally fall into traps the baddies made which gave more clues while Shaggy and Scooby had insane luck.

I watched an interview of Salma Hayek talking about puss in boots before it came out and she was just gushing, and I was like, “poor boo they’re making you be so positive on this press tour about what I’m sure if going to be a trash movie.” But I was watching her and she seemed so genuine and enthusiastic, like she didn’t seem like she was forced to say this stuff, I got tentatively excited it might actually be good, and holy crow it actually was!!!!
Calling it bad is an understatement, it is an abomination that is Scooby-Doo in name only. (Or to be accurate, as related to the franchise as a unwanted Karen stepmother in her late 40’s)

I really can't believe how these shows are ramrodding in a second season when the first season is barely even in infancy. They truly have no molecule of knowledge in regard to pacing, comedic or commercially. It is already shaping up to be a failure, but they still are willing to sink in a few million to make this the 2D rival to Batwoman.
I never thought I’d miss when adult cartoons were “hey it’s like your kid cartoons but we say fuck now! Also sex?!?!? Really graphic violence?!?!?”. Now it’s just “HEY SUPER WACKY RANDOOOOOM now here’s some propaganda”.

It breaks my heart that those artists did so well with the WORST scripts. Manoman, I wish these talented artist/ animators a profitable future despite being tied to this trash show
Adding onto how Velma is a lot like Rick Sanchez in this show, I think a big reason why characters who are made to act like Rick so often fail is because the show they’re in fails to recognize their actions as wrong. These characters will do things that are very much in line with things Rick would, but the difference is that only Rick’s actions are called out and portrayed as bad, and that makes the other Rick-inspired character look tone deaf.

I’ve heard people also compare Velma to Daria. But Velma has several key differences that really change everything. For starters, unlike Velma, Daria was a real outsider and going against the flow, not just bitching about everything as a character trait. She had almost no friends at all, and had very little self-comfidence. Also even though she could be cynical, she rarely attacked people to their face and especially not based on modern progressist moralist trends, she only called out genuine stupidity of her peers and society as a whole. And last but not least, she occasionally was able to question herself instead of being an ass constantly. She felt relatable because she hated the growing stupidity of the world and everything that’s wrong with society, she wasn’t just being a smartass out of pure egotism.
The way Daria communicated her views was also charmingly well written. When she expressed an observation or criticism, it was almost always through a sarcastic witticism, the idea was written out in a banter/joke like format that actually had descriptive value. Her commentary would often then be responded to, opening up for further exploration in a back and forth. From what little of Velma I've seen, her character (and the shows writing in general) doesn't do that. She pontificates in a very shallow manner, with no nuance or depth to speak of. Like when someone name drops a buzzword in place of actually communicating the meat of the idea. This is a common thing in modern lowbrow political discourse, where it's easier to fling labels and buzzwords than actually describe and argue. In a word, Velma is pretentious. Daria is not.
Daria wasn't mean to be mean; she was frustrated by a world that could be so much better, and she even helped people once in a while, especially if she felt they were getting a raw deal. I'm not saying that Daria was a flawless character - in fact flaws were a big thing about her - but she had more than her share of good traits too, to balance out the more off-putting ones. It's always a good thing if a show's lead is likeable, but even if they're not, it's sufficient to be relatable. Daria wasn't always easy to like, but you could at least see how she turned out as she did.
Furthermore, Unlike Velma's supporting cast, Daria's Supporting cast despite falling into well worn archetypes actually have a good deal of depth to them like for example take Daria's sister Quinn, now on the surface Quinn may be your standard shallow dumb popular girl but we are shown that she is actually pretty intelligent and really only acts the way she does because she's really insecure for most of the series that being popular is the only thing she's good at and actively sabotages herself in order to fit in with people like Staci. Kevin Thompson may be the idiot jock and star quarterback, but he's ultimately a pretty chill guy. And Jodie Landon's entire character is one of the most nuanced and fascinating deconstructions of the whole Token minority characters.
your two minute Velma skit was funnier than the whole season one of the show 😂 HBO refused to use this video (after requesting it), when in reality, they should have hired MeatC to write the whole thing, it would've been definitely much more successful 💀
I enjoyed your short way more than anything on Velma. Agree about the good art and the bad writing. Hoping those animators get more work because those panic attack scenes are amazingly-drawn.
Yes. Yes it is. Mystery Incorporated is a great modern update of Scooby Doo with ongoing story arcs and decent character development. That show deserves all the attention Velma is getting.
- Glad you mentioned the animation. I watched a bunch of reviews that are all on point about how bad it was but some were hating so much they said the animation wasn't any good either and I thought that was unfair as that was the only awesome part for me. The scenes where Velma hallucinates look really good to me especially.
People really don't understand that not everything has to look like Avatar or Invincible. People have this weird idea that everything needs to be gourmet for it to be a good dish. I don't mind the artstyle that much. Say what you will about the character designs, but ignoring the fact that it's supposed to be an adaptation, I think everything looks fairly nice. At least it's not Big Mouth. Or Rick and Morty...
There are a couple rough things with the animation, but honestly I never would have noticed them without them being pointed out in a review. That said, overall, the animation style is original and well done and I give the artists kudos for that. The style is nice, gives the characters unique and different feels, and the hallucinations are 100% taking perfect advantage of the medium. I think some reviewers can’t make the separation between disliking the premise and writing of the show while still acknowledging the art style is well done. You can hate parts and think the show should not be renewed/watched while still acknowledging the good parts that deserve praise.
Velma sucks because they took a beloved franchise and made illogical changes to the characters, removing everything that made the characters likeable or relatable, the story and humor fall flat and are just plain bad. Mindy casting herself as Velma is actually kinda wild, even assuming narcissism or the ego of past success. "The Quirky Girl" casting themselves as Velma feel like "That Comic Book Guy" casting themselves as Batman. You have REALLY got to think you're the hottest thing around if you believe you could pull it off.
To be fair it’s pretty normal for creators in animation to cast themselves in the lead roles- like Gravity Falls, Family Guy or Rick and Morty… however in this case it is a lil weird
(Edit: actually y’all are right, it’s not the same. Very weird self inserting)
@@chimedemon I'd argue the major difference is that those are all their creations, where Velma had all this goodwill and pop culture cache, and it seems Mindy just said "Ah yes, *I* am the perfect person to voice this character widely loved!"

Naked children in the very first episode but you’re whining about being woke. Dear god it’s Like you purposely ignored any relevant criticism and went straight to woke.
@@UncannyValleyVideos "lazy, uninspired, and unpleasant" seems like a pretty good summation of the tone of the entire script
Adding onto how Velma is a lot like Rick Sanchez in this show, I think a big reason why characters who are made to act like Rick so often fail is because the show they’re in fails to recognize their actions as wrong.
Daria is not.
nicely put
Who the HECK is this ‘Daria’ person that I keep hearing about in every comment section of a Velma video?!?!?
