To a 9 yr old in the 80's this felt like a right of passage, where you were now old enough to go on the adult rides like Space mountain, matterhorn and thunder mountain. The scariest part was the anticipation in that dark queue area where you catch a glimpse of the one of the trains racing by in the window. Haven't been back since the mid 90's and quite frankly I'd rather remember the park the way it was.
I remember going on this version of the ride in tokyo. I personally liked the one in tokyo better because it had much better effects and was not just red all the way. I also used to be so terrified of the effect in the tunnel between the first and second lift hill. I probably would've gotten nightmares if they had that sound effect in the second lift hill.
I practically had to beg to go on this ride, my mom’s like, “I heard people got sick on it, we ain’t going”, six years later, I got to ride it for the first time, to me, it wasn’t that fast to make you sick, just enough to send your hats or glasses flyin’ off, I held on to both the whole time😂😂😂😂
@@cliptrashbin2389 When the ride abruptly closed on April 10, 2003, it was suggested that a structural failure could occur sometime that day if the ride was allowed to open. Except for the track in the station, maintenance area, tunnels, and lift hills, all of the track was replaced.
If you look closely after it comes out of the second lift and as it goes onto the third one you can spot the “cookie” asteroid (as most call it) in a few areas
@@JennasMusic76 it was a really iconic part of the original ride. Sad that it's gone and mostly forgotten now. I also grew up being able to see it in tokyo
@idk-zt8rx I totally agree. It is really sad as now when I mention it the younger generation has no clue what I'm talking about. I bet it was so cool in Japan, I would have loved to have visited the park.
@@Bradly105 this is actually the best footage of the original ride because you can actually see the stars unlike other recordings. Why they cut out the rest of it is beyond me. My best guess is that the footage was damaged/corrupted
@@gabbyvillarreal1062 The original ride was made in house, built by the park. After structural compromise, it almost had to be entirely rebuilt, now using track from Canadian manufacturer Dynamic Attractions

Very cool.
That red strobe vortex going upwards was the most resonant memory from '97.
The sound effects in this version are scary, especially the ones on the 2nd lift hill.
very 2001: a space odyssey. the new one is very, Incredibles.
The old queue and it's design details were actually inspired from the ship interior scenes of 2001 space odyssey.
I remember this all so well. Miss this version, but definately prefer Space Mountain now.
Wow, does this version look scary.
You can easily notice all of the changes made on this ride.
That’s so cool it feels like time traveling
What the hell is that creepy-ass sound on the second lift?
+Ryan Sawyer Engine startup i believe
Connor Dukenson lol I was thinking the same thing
Ikr, for a second, i thought that was ghost galaxy

This is the other one.
This is how it was in the late 70’s, except that the dark portion wasn’t edited out.

It was scarier back in those days.
This thing is fast
This is what it looked like when I first went on it in grade school.
Way better then now
Stupid ghost
Also it was so short
I got nightmares from this as a 8 year old :(
when space mountain was more fun with the special effects!!!
Same layout, just different scenery. I loved it as a kid.
AA610 I heard they redid the entire track because it was crumbling

Why does everything look so red in there?
Like the one in Tokyo.
1:20 This sounds like something I’d hear in sleep paralysis

I always called that a cookie too great memories
I'm pretty sure the cookie asteroid is the one in the newer version. It's never lit up. This one used to be called the soccer ball satellite
@@idk-zt8rx In CA where I grew up in the 70's and 80's we called it the cookie, i've never been on the new one in my life.

Why didn't you record the entire ride!!??
Master Fate he did this was the old track
Master Fate it was too dark for the camera to pick up stuff

@Costerguy1234556 from the late 1990s I think
How old is the footage?
I think this one looks short because maybe this is the clip from before they redid the entire track because it was crumbling
No, he just edited out the ride after the 3rd lift hill and cut to when the ride ended.
This is fake, cameras didn't exist in the 1990s.
Magicalish USDF cameras existed in the 90s..
21 century kid
@@MatthewMachon actually cameras were been in a long time ago
I guess he thinks cassette players are a myth or something 😂 stop making me feel old.
Why the first lift hill go straight up ;-;
that was short...
it's weird to think that space mountain is technically defunct
what you mean?
