god, this level was confusing
Ikr
Yes its was. And very fun
I loved it
I know right
@w w absolutely
This reminds me of staying up late at my cousins house trying to get all the stars in Hazy Maze Cave. So many great memories with this game.
Spencer Davis hazy fuckin maze cave.
Yeah this song takes me waaaay the fuck back.
me too, this is nostalgic
i cleared this game
reminds me of the time my sister had a friend over and the friends little sister came into the room i was playing in and started watching me play this level. i gave her an xbox controller and she thought she was playing.
I don’t have any good memories of hazy maze cave
The professor: Oh! C'mon the test is not that confusing
The test:

The professor: Oh! C'mon, there will be plenty of time to complete the test.

@@maxeisenhardt8800Such an underrated comment! I love this comment so much!!
I'm so glad they incorporated the original underground baseline in this game.
Koji kondo composed the original theme, and then later remixed it for the N64 :)
I mean it’s in almost every mainline Mario game. The only one I don’t think it’s in is Super Mario World. I guess Nintendo didn’t consider the SMB 1’s underground theme a staple yet at that point.
@@Brandonrios365uper Mario world every theme works off it’s the super Mario world leitmotif with the exception of the boss music
This level was confusing as hell
Especially in Super Mario 63!
Glad to see I'm not the only one who remembers SM63!
Kachoodler Shekelburgh Are you kidding? This game is loved by thousands!
5ерикл yup

This level made me terrified when I was a kid because it was way too ominous for me. Simple things like signs that said “don’t become it’s lunch” or “there’s only one problem: you can’t swim in it” made me have second thoughts about continuing, especially when I saw the lake monster for the first time. Scared the heck outta me
I knew the lake monster was coming, I was not emotionally prepared for how large it was…
@@bryankosfeld It was a cute dinosaur you had to kill
Same. 😂
Same, for some weird reason this level made me feel uneasy, to this day I still can't really tell why tho
Same broseph
I always loved in N64 games when the music would change depending on where you are in the map. This game probably does it best. Especially in the water worlds.
This does it awesome but the Banjo games did it better in that aspect
@@agentepolaris4914 Just played them a few days ago and you are definitely right. Lol
@@danieljl1093 Grant Kirkhope did God's work in those games
yes the song goes deeper as you go deep in the cave
The power of the N64's dynamic method of playing music. Instead of it being like playing an mp3 which is a continuous stream of audio, it's more like a MIDI file where what's playing can be changed if need-be on the fly.
I really appreciate how they took the underground theme and made it less generic, gave it its own feeling. Even though it's still "dun dun dun," it still feels like its own track.
Nice profile picture
@emptyglass7867this is way better, and if you liked the old underground theme, well, there it is, in the middle of the track, it would be perdect

COMFORTING? This is creepy
@@capivaragamer45. Yeah, that Haze Maze section hit different, when your playing in front of a full screen, instead of a Switch.
This music was also used in the pyramid in Shifting Sand Land, the igloo in Snowman's Land, and Wet Dry World
And in the DS version this is used for The Goomboss Battle

IIRC, it’s also used in the Cave under Wiggler in Tiny Huge Island. Correct me if I’m wrong, it’s been awhile since I played it.

That's exactly what i was calling that monster too.
Do not forget Mario 64 came out before Pokemon
@@medkouki9568 Actually they both came out on the same year, 25 years ago (Happy 25th Anniversary, SM64!) with Pokemon being slightly earlier on Feb 27 in JP and SM64 today, June 23rd.
I love how this song starts, but then it drops and becomes an episode of Seinfeld at 0:36
I still hear Mario's foot steps and shouts echoing throughout every time I listen to this track
HOOOOO HYAAAAA HAA!!!!! HA!! HOOOOHH
I love how much of this soundtrack can be used as backround music for so many types of youtube videos from video essays to commentaries.
For some weird reason I thought wet and dry world was a construction site and I thought hazy maze cave was a factory. XD
The Atlantis level kinda looks like construction site.
Johannes Haukanes Atlantis?
Sparky Dood
I don't remember. I think I called the Wet and dry world for Atlantis because I was to lazy to whrite the actual name of the lvl in my last comment.
But there is a fake memory telling me the lvl or one of the missions is named Atlantis because of the house under water. But that is a fake memory. :-)

This level was so confusing. It's still confusing even today.
I CAN'T FIND MY WAY THROUGH THIS DAMN LEVEL! great music though :D
I've played Hazy maze so many times, I've memorized the layout. And I never looked at the map.
I mean, even if i look at the map i still wont figures the way
This is still my favorite level in any Mario game to this day, I don’t know why I was so intrigued by it at my young age but everytime I see a Mario 64 challenge, speed run or playthough I love when they get to Hazy Maze Cave, those first notes are Erie and soothing. Very memorable
I like how the beginning of the ost sounds calm just like the player until they realize "oh I'm playing on this level, where do I go?
then the theme just turns into confused wondering making the player look at the map that's on the map and making them think to themselves how this doesn't help at all...
This is the true meaning of nostalgia
My left ear is enjoying the maracas.
This was such a twist since we heard the 8 bit version for so long! The fact they switched it to a funk melodic theme made it less scary in a sense but hey I was 6 when this came out so 🤣
sounds really cool. it sounds like what would play if you found a secret path somewhere.
What kind of overalls does Mario wear?
Denim denim denim.
Lol never heard that one before
I've heard of this joke.
No, blue da ba dee.
Ha, Arin of Game Grumps used that one on Danny.
All stars:red overalls
Super mario 64:blue overallsmario wears them

@Hamoudidoesgaming :D He is referring to another cave level with Goombas I guess.
Got good old cold chills from this intro
THAT PURPLE MIST ALWAYS GOT ME! the maze did NOT help
Yesterday I fell asleep while listening to this soundtrack with my headphones, THIS SOUNDTRACK IS SO BEAUTIFUL
I do anything to spend an entire week in super Mario 64 castle. I would go straight to this zone for sure. Mario has it so good.

RadiatorRampardos Will always love the warmth & nostalgia of some of the 90's games soundtracks!
So now, I do just that. Open the gate, use the ceiling of the gate to build up some speed, and the redirect my angle (out of bounds) to build up the rest. Now, you're probably wondering what I need all this speed for. After all, I do built up speed for 12 hours. But to answer that, we need to talk about parallel universes. And if you thought my other tangents were complicated, just you wait. Okay. So Mario's position if a Floating Point Number, but it's converted to a Short when the game uses it to test for collision with Floor Triangles. In other words, Mario's position can basically be any decimal number, but it's converted to an integer between -32,768 and +32,767 inclusive. So, any fractional portion is truncated and numbers too big or too small are moved into this range using the modulo operator. Graphically, that means that the position used for floor detection is always inside of this box. So if Mario's in this box, then his actual position, and the position used for floor detection are the same. (Albeit, maybe off by a single fraction due to the truncation.) But if Mario leaves that box, then his actual position, and the position used for floor detection well separate, since the percentage used for floor detection will just loop back arou
I Hate Video Games what's this from?
Emmet The Otter Well, I would tell you, but in order to do that, we first have to talk about parallel universes

Nintendo always finds a way to use the original underground theme from Super Mario Bros.
Yup, and there are many versions and remixes.
2:28 suspense nostalgia 😍
*2:29** I love the second part!*
One of my favorite songs from this game, especially the opening section. These levels both have a very interesting vibe to them and this music fits both pretty well
The clicking sticks in this song remind me of that one Spongebob episode where he got the jellyfish out of his house when Gary started doing the clicking sticks with his eyes.
The feint taps/clicks in the background remind of Gary the snails eyes clacking together in that one Jellyfish Episode from SpongeBob.
This level may has confused us all, but the music is so damn chill
I finished he game multiple times but I still get lost...
I think I'm the only person in this entire comment section who wasn't confused by this level
*The secret level was the best! 😁👍🏼*
This is one of the best tracks in mario's history, if not general video game history.
Facts!
This level was my favorite. Loved the highway-like components of this level. It was literally I-95 in Westchester County, NY, with the cuplight luminaire lamposts (a variant of the high-mast highway lighting). That was the tone of hazy maze cave.
Toad's turnpike makes me think of entire highway interchanges lit up in Mercury Vapor
There’s a bit of a 007 Goldeneye feel with this one
#8 best Mario underground theme.
That bass in the song is like aaaaahhhhhh 🤭
The theme of parallel universes and half-A Presses. XD
Here after they finally revealed the location of the skybox of Wet-Dry World.
The music that plays trying to get midnight snacks at 3AM:
Came here after hearing this in a literal dream. The most random dream I’ve ever had.
One of my favorite SMB tunes was World 1-2. You could say it's my second favorite to 1-1. I loved playing this level on my 64. I would play it just to listen to this music.
Nostalgia pura recuerdo cuando lo jugaba en el 2005 😢😢❤
Alright, but where's the actual dungeon? This soundtrack is called "Cave Dungeon", yet I have not seen any dungeon in the entire game.
Its a secret room I think
The entire level is a goddamn dungeon, because you can't figure out which direction is up after 30 minutes of playing.
English is not my first language, I thought that the word "dungeon" refered to an underground prison when I made that comment. I later figured it out that "dungeon" also means "labyrinthine subterranean". So yeah, basically Hazy Maze Cave, the pyramid, and the igloo are the Cave Dungeon of Super Mario 64. Also, it should not be that hard to figure out which direction to go if you are referring to Hazy Maze Cave; there is a reason why the level itself has a map to guide the player.
@@yexxii- Maybe the secret room is the wiggle's cage in Tiny Huge Island, that could also be the Cave Dungeon.
When video games use the term Dungeon it usually means an interior area (mainly a cave but can also be used in general for any interior) that is filled with enemies and loot
This was the most confusing level in the game. I can’t remember exactly but I think you get to use metal mario i forgot though
Super Mario 64 is a cool game that is ahead of its time
How long I needed just to get an overview about this maze as a kid..?
