The ‘secret’ of this song is to play the bassline relaxed. The song is played with a tripled feel and has a got a very nice main groove and some really great melodic licks.
One of the tricky things in this bassline is for instance in the Verse. The note on the second count should really be played laidback. And also the timing of the note on the fourth count (as lead in to the first note of the next bar) can be tricky. For me it didn’t work when I was in a rush. Being relaxed is the key here.
And of course Paul Denman plays some really nice melodic licks. The licks in the interlude are just fantastic! Listen for instance at bar 68 where he slides one tone after another. Also bar 70 is really great; he combines slides down- and upwards with a hammer on note. Really beautiful.
An other licks which is worth mentioning is the lick in bar 16. It’s not a difficult lick, but I just love the slide towards the D note here!
And this song has a bunch of triplets. So if you like to get the triplets in your pocket, this is the song to do so.
I play this song on a Ibanez SR605E with roundwound strings in active mode. Standard tuning: E-A-D-G. Although this is a 5-string bass I only use 4 strings (not the low B-string). No effects used.
    Bass: Paul S.Denman
    Album: Promise (1985)
Composers: Sade Adu, Andrew Hale and Stuart Matthewman

    Hello! Thanks for the video!
I have the same bass, only with four strings... Tell me, what does the fifth string sound like? And in general, how do you like this guitar? Do you still use it in your recordings? Thanks for the answer!

    • @basscoverpete

@@kotanel thank for your comment 👍 The fifth string is wonderful. But I don’t cover many 5-string songs so I don’t use this bass a lot. But it’s got a funky more hifi sound and that’s why I like it. I’ll use in the future when I do more funky stuff. Thanks again and greetings from the Netherlands, Pete www.basscoverpete.com 🎶🎵
