Such a smooth bassgroove to play! And which bassplayer doesn’t recognize the bassolo!! The ‘secret’ of the groove in this song is playing the groove with ease; playing some notes with accent (staccato/short); playing quarter triplets (especially in the bassolo) and playing a different groove in the Verse and Chorus although the chords are the same. It’s that subtle difference that really makes the difference. Listen for instance at bar 65 where the G note (chord) is played on the second eight of the fourth count and not on the first note of the next bar.
There are different versions of this published (on records and on the internet). This version is called the 'jazz' version. The original band played this song this way at live performances. You can also listen to this version on • Smooth Operator (1984... It does not really different a lot if you listen to other versions. This version has got some more bars :-)
I want to thank Jean-Luc from France for mentioning this to me!
Bass: Paul S. Denman
Album: Diamond Life (1984)
Composer: Sade Adu; Ray St. John
I play this song on a Dean ‘Edge’ bass with EMG pickups and roundwound strings.

Greetings from France. I love Sade's work. Been a fan for many, many years. I so enjoy Paul Denman's bass lines. Your transcription is the best I've seen and heard for this song, so I will purchase the transcription. Looking forward to playing it. I have 7 short scale basses, but I think I'll use my EBMM Tim Commerford passive Stingray, to match as closely as possible the Stingray that Denman used when I saw them in concert. À bientôt! Bonne journée.
Hi John, thanks for your comment and story about Sade and you basses! And thank you very much for buying the transcription 👍👍👍. Have fun with this song 😀🎵🎶. Greetings from the Netherlands, Pete
Yep! great bassline. Thank You! I got giddy when I saw a notification for this cover. Been meaning to learn it.
Hi Amalie! Not being a native English speaker I had to look what ‘giddy’ means 😀. Thanks to google translate I know what you mean 😀👍. Thanks for your (always 😀) positive and kind response. As always: it’s much appreciated!!! Greetings from the Netherlands (where there is bit of snow at this moment) and I wish you a lot of fun with this song! Pete
Beautiful my man. You could fill in for Sades bass player.
Thanks Lawrence for your compliment, much appreciated 👍. Playing with Sade, that would be great 🎶🎵 Cheers, Pete
hi! beautiful cover!! i’m the begginer, so can you answer my question, please? what tuning is it?
Hi, thanks for your comment👍. It’s standard tuning: E A D G . Lots of fun with this song! In case you didn’t know: you can buy the transcription on my website so you can more easily read the transcription and for instance repeat the licks which are more difficult. Thanks for your question and much succes! Greetings from the Netherlands, Pete
Another great bassline. Many thanks. Little confused by the chord progression. Obviously the Dm is a D-Minor but what does the 'Dm (followed by a small triangle)' mean? Usually the triangle indicates a Major 7 chord - but the chord in this instance has already been labelled as a D-minor. Any help gratefully appreciated.
Hi Graham, thanks for your response! The triangle is common within jazz chords, it means a major 7th in the chord. In the Dm chord you also play a C sharp (or D flat). It’s an rather unusual chord, because the major 7th is usually played in a major chord. But Sade has chosen for a major 7th in a minor chord. You might also play a Dm chord with a D flat (or C sharp) in the bass. I’ve tried both chords, but the Dm with a major 7th seems the best way to play it. For us bassplayers it’s a D flat in the bass on a Dm chord, but for the guitar of keyboard the Dm with a major 7th sounds the best. Hope this is helpful and explains the chord progression. Thank you for asking this question, much appreciated! Greetings, Pete
@@basscoverpete That's great. I understand better now. You've explained it perfectly. Many thanks for taking time to respond. Have a great weekend.
@@grahamcooper2144 no problem at all! I appreciate your question, it helps me (and therefore also, other people who watch this video) to clarify things. My pleasure!
