The trope of a character making a joke that turn out to be the effective cause/solution of/to the problem will never be overused.
I always enjoyed Jonathan as a character and I think he brings a lot to the show. He's no superstar, but he and Larry, are relatable characters that I never get tired of seeing. I hope we get more of them in the future.
Omg it's almost like you've seen the show before. Your comments are so insightful .
I see what you did there.
Willow's outfit that you said you liked, the one with the cat head on the shirt, was extremely popular in 1999. That cat head was on every sticker, shirt, jewelry, all over the mall, ect. Ahhhh I'm old.
I wish I had watched this show when I was in high school. The message Buffy tells Jonathan, that no one is thinking about me because they are too busy with their own problems, is exactly what I needed to hear.
This episode was actually originally pulled from the schedule and aired out of order, after the third season had finished. It was supposed to air in late April 1999, but one week before the scheduled air date, the Columbine High School massacre happened, so the episode was pulled.
Correct, it wasn't aired, at least in the U.S., until just before the start of season 4.

which makes it a good thing that this episode has so little to do with the season's main plot. people (not riley) who complain about how episodes of older shows tend to stand alone and not really tell a lot of overarching story are forgetting how networks treated those shows.
I remember being a little middle school kid and getting a ride home from some church family just to watch it. They played it in August when school wasn't in session. On a sadder note I did go on to have a college friend who went to Columbine and had been there on that day.
Sci-Fi shows: don't touch the alien blood! Horror shows: don't touch the demon blood!
Then 'Edge of Tomorrow'(2014)
My favorite comedic part of the episode was the way that Buffy found out about her mom and Giles having sex. No wonder Joyce was being so evasive.
And I loved the last line of the episode, followed by Giles bumping into a tree.
This was one of the best episodes of S3. Even though the tone is very comedic in terms of Buffy being able to read minds, it deals with potential mass murder, and teenage suicide. The writers did an incredible job to match these two themes throughout. The embarrassing Xander's thoughts, as with other teenage boys obsessed with sex, and Joyce's attempt to try and stop Buffy finding out that Giles had sex with Joyce are embarrassing and so funny at same time. Earshot is always a fan favourite, keeping up the quality of S3 episodes. It was if course not shown on tv at time as well n coincided with the Columbine massacre. It was a brilliant piece of writing. This episode maintained the superb quality of S3 which was an almost flawless season.
Well, we know who will perish first in the next zombie apocalypse "Oh, it's just one of those siren things" ;-)
There are some good lines in this one, Oz saying he always goes straight to the obits (this happens when you live on a hellmouth) and Cordelia asking the teach if he's planning on killing a bunch of people tomorrow, then give him he smile and the head tilt, so funny.
One of my favourite moments didn't make it into the reaction: Buffy's smirk at Wesley after hearing his thoughts about Cordelia.
My small town reads the obits all the time. In fact the local AM Radio station got taken over by a new group and they were going to get rid of the morning reading of the obits and the town pitched a fit. The obits are back on the radio now. I've never understood it but alas . . . .
I love how Xander is the one who's ultimately right about the lunch lady & the way he finds out by being distracted by food... well, they do refer to themselves as the Scooby Gang.
I figure Buffy must have gotten a ton of demon blood on her over the years, so I guess it's just this one that infects.
This is the day we all found out that Sunnydale High school newspaper has an obituary section. Darkly hilarious.
But my favorite moment in this episode (besides "You had SEX with GILES?!") was that moment of eye contact between Xander and the lunch lady 🤣
When the lunch lady turned from a fat woman to a thin man during the fight scene.
For me I loved your thoughts about Jonathan. Danny Strong who played him has gone to have a very successful writing career. But personally I saw him in a parking garage and said hello how's it going? when I was going to a job interview for like a receptionist or something and he was going to a meeting to make an Oscar winning movie. I only even spoke to him because he looked vaguely familiar and thought he was somebody I went to high school with
Everybody loves Oz and his Mind 😄
I still use "But that would be smart" to this day.
Poor Jonathan, great reaction as always so I guess it's about time to become a patron, there , done 😁
Anybody else live for the clap at the beginning? The only other reactor who gives us a beginning clap is NeilTalks. I like it.
Lexi does too. =]
yeah Riley is such a cutie and sweetie, she's sharp too she caught a ton of stuff so far i haven't even caught even after watching tons of other reactors, she makes me laugh, it was funny one time she's like "im tryin not get mad at the show, i gotta stop getting mad because then my dog thinks im mad at her" which is super funny to me. she's my favorite reactor, i love her because she's so special, such a unique person unlike i've ever seen before, it's like she's a young woman but with the sweetness and innocence of a little kid but still with an adult perspective =} she's just so lovable and cutesy, i'm tryin not be weird or a simp or whatever, i can't help it she is just too adorable >< i love her like a cool kid sis that i can't stop hangin out with watchin her vids it brightens up my day =}
@@w33d533d I bet you would like LM Reactions, based on what you said.
Yes! Cheerleading vibes always, she’s so cute 🥰
With her being a former cheerleader, I always expect her to say, "Ready? *clap* Okay!" And get disappointed when she just turns on the video.
Always a great day to see Riley's reaction😁
Larry - he's so out his grandmother is fixing him up with guys...
I really appreciate that Buffy takes on real life topics and sometimes doesn’t even turn it into monsters of the week anymore. Just straight up, here we are. School shootings.
So now we know why Joyce and Giles were so uncomfortable at the end of 'Band Candy' especially when Buffy said she got to them before they 'did anything'!
Jonathan does pop up from time to time. Buffy's speech was great, even though that wasn't what he was planning.
Nice contrast between Oz's deep, unspoken thoughts and Cordelia saying everything she thinks.
This episode was delayed from its original airing because of the Columbine shooting. It was to air that week. I have always been a little curious -- a question about those who remember the time-period as Columbine happened (I was there and remember, but never put much thought into it at the time), but others can weigh in if they want: Would the episode have been delayed if they cut the lines about school shootings had been cut, or would they have needed to also rewrite Jonathon in the clocktower with the rifle? Could it have been one or the other or would it have needed to be both for the higher-ups to feel OK in airing it when it was initially supposed to (the week Columbine happened)? I am glad they didn't cut anything and delayed it, but it has made me curious.
They would most likely had to cut both Cordy’s line and the scenes in the clock tower. There were other shows that did gun violence in school type episodes and they also had to delay airing those. I can’t remember what shows but in the 90s and early 00s it was common for shows and even kids to have an episode themed around gun violence/school shootings.
It had to be delayed, there was nothing the show could have done, the shooting was raw and in your face.
I remember it was the first time the Country stopped after a school shooting, they were starting to pop up more frequently. It showed how ill prepared we were as a Nation to defend its children. It was really big news and dominated the National spotlight.
In hindsight, this should have been shown and discussed, both the Jonathan storyline and the murdering of students who offended were on display.
This episode was more accurate than all the other things they tried, the things the Government tried are the same things they try, every time there is a school shooting now.
I hope that helps and kind of answers your question.
@@somedudeontwitterstalkedme3829 I wasn't thinking it shouldn't have been delayed. I was curious as to which part made it that way and if they reworked it would it have been safe from delaying. I wouldn't want it reworked or not delayed. It was a curious 'what if...' question
It was delayed out of respect for the families of the victims. Nobody wanted to go anywhere near the subject. I think radio stations even held off playing Jeremy Spoke by Pearl Jam for a while. Marilyn Manson suspended his tour out of respect, although people went on to blame him for it anyway. He spoke about it in an interview in Bowling for Columbine by Michael Moore. This kind of thing is a parent's worst nightmare. They will always overreact, and I don't think you can really blame them.
@@SIRTONIUS It was a 'what if' question, not a should they. I was asking about the writing itself and what the episode would need to change (I don't actually want or need it to change) to have aired at the time.
17:24 that happened when this episode was going to air (as in the day before this episode was that mass shooting) so they decided to skip this episode
Let's talk about Jonathan in the clocktower with a rifle. Which is actually mirroring the real life tragedy that happened in 1966 on the University of Texas at Austin campus. Wherein a gunman went up in tbe clocktower with a rifle to shoot at innocent persons down below. And then this episode got delayed airing because of Columbine. Isn't that intetesting?
There's a fantastic documentary from 2016 about that clocktower shooting spree called Tower. One can find it here on TH-cam, and I highly recommend it.
The episode was scheduled for like two days later, I have a friend who was an actual survivor of it and I can not imagine what she would have to go through if she watched this just days later.
It's just this demon that gives an 'aspect of the demon'. Some other demons' blood can cause different things, but it's definitely not something that's an issue with all demons. Most demons, the blood doesn't do anything.
Buffy can do a "force jump" like a jedai.
The Yuuzhan Vong have entered the chat.
Love your videos and I love your voice! 🤗 I can’t wait for you to see graduation day pt 1 & 2!! 😅🥰
The issue of Mass Shootings, especially at schools, is more prevalent today than it was back than. Mass shootings skyrocketed after the Brady Bill, which banned the sale of assault style weapons, was allowed to expire by the conservative controlled Congress. We are at a point now where we have MORE than 1 mass shootingt per day, where a mass shooting is defined as where 1 (or multiple persons working together) shoot and injure (or kill) at least 4 people in a single event.
If I remember correctly this episode was delayed in its original airing because of the Columbine shooting
it was... we all had to wait weeks to watch it and we had to see it out of sequence because it aired after the season finalle and prior to season 4. It's sad that over 20 years later there are still HS shootings or just mass shootings in general, just yesterday I read about the recent shooting in Houston at a music festival.
@@Nexusofgeek astroworld???? there was no shooting it was a stampede
i cant imagine watching this for the first time and not being able to watch this episode! obviously i understand why, but this is just one of my s3 favorites
also 2:53 OH MY GOD TEETH that woulda made it a very different episode
it was so frustrating, the network feared the backlash they were being insensitive if they aired it right after the tragedy, so we had not choice but to wait
This is one of the most important Buffy episodes. The main character finally gets the information she needs to progress the most important storyline.
Giles and Joyce did it! Twice!
This is to me the ultimate Buffy episode. It’s not the *best* episode, but it’s the episode that is best at taking all of the elements that take all of the elements that most define the show, especially in the high school era, and put it into 44 minutes of storytelling. You have the fantasy aspect, the humor, and the way that both are used to tell a story of real emotional weight of what growing up is like.
You likely know by now that this episode was delayed due to the Columbine high school shooting. While it’s understandable, given that the school shooting imagery and language would have been too raw at the time, I feel like the core message of how you’re not alone in your pain is something that probably could have been heard at the time.
A movie in the early aught's called "Thoughtcrimes" was pretty good and also delt with a person with telepothy and the consequences of not being able to turn it off.
Yes, the Columbine incident happened the same year, and almost seemed like a catalyst for future shootings.
One sad thing that I need to relate is that, shortly after the Columbine shootings, there was a fatal one at my former high school. Only one person was killed, but it was still a death.
I love watching these vids, also I get the vibe your from the New England area let me know if I'm wrong or not
1:30 The watchers kill the bad slayer and a new one gets called.

Sorry this one was late. TH-cam is back on her bs and kept blocking it. I got so frustrated I forgot to give you guys and update so that's my bad. Anyway, this episode was really good. It dealt with some serious stuff but also managed to be funny, especially at the end. The lunch lady made me laugh and Johnathon made me want to cry lol What did you guys think of this one?
You're on season 4 of Angel. Weird watch order you got there.
@@MrSupertallblackman lmao oops I didn’t notice 🤣
I wouldn't normally give a spoiler, but you asked the question. So if you REALLY want the answer scroll down.
I won't say that no other demon could infect a human, but most don't.
One thing, most Mass Shooters (especially those who plan it in advance) are suicidal. Most want to, and expect to, die as part of their mass shooting.
Jonathan was cool, I miss the show. Buffy was pretty good, it was my favorite series of all time. Now I don't watch shows, I read.
Such a good episode
I love this episode actually seeing what the characters are thinking, and Cordelia just says pretty much exactly what she thinks, always makes me at least smile. The fact Xander’s joke about the cafeteria lady was actually right.
‘You had sex with Giles……. twice!” it always make me laugh.
Someone saying something jokingly that turns out to be true is sometimes known as 'prophetic irony'.
The Columbine shootings happened only a couple weeks before this episode was supposed to air. It was delayed until into the summer because of it.
Are you going to do 'Angel' reactions as well?
Ah, I see from the reactions available on Patreon that you are!
Couldn’t air originally because it was right around Columbine..
This episode was originally supposed to air the week of the Columbine shooting but because of the shooting it was postponed and released later on before then there weren't that many high school shootings in America at least widely known. Excellent job on the video👍 really loved it😊❤️
Oh man that speech in earshot makes me cry. Also you got into Buffy Reactor Awards. Make sure to skip the spoiler at 13:50 I have a time stamp to jump to pinned:

A good show to watch if you ever react to Babylon 5, it covers the overwhelming aspect of telepathy quite well
Cordelia has zero tact. And this is a great episode to prove it. LMMFAO!!!
And P.S. GO GILES!!! WHOO-HOOO!
Oz thoughts >>>>>>>>>>
When she gets to the last season of Angel I’m going lol.
Firefly and Dollhouse are probably next though.
@@jeremyfrost2636 I honestly forgot why I made this comment. I had to rewatch the video I do remember now.
@@NickJames87 I’m curious. What was your reason?
@@jeremyfrost2636 what she was saying about back then stuff being relevant event today. The last season of Angel touches on a lot of the things not vey well, If you know the episodes. Im in my 30’s I remember the 90’s & 2000’s I remember the show’s being on.
Is that a real fire alarm or is someone listening to War Pigs?
It's not uncommon in country towns for the fire house to have an air horn that can be heard for miles. It's used to call in the volunteer fire fighters when there's a brush fire or something.
@@joce-in-stitches Ah, that makes sense. I haven't heard this type of alarm in the real world, luckily.
If you are going to react to other shows after Buffy I have some recommendations. iZombie, funny with some good character development. Lucifer, the same. Chuck, a bit old now, but, funny, exciting, dramatic with great character development and performances. Warrior Nun may be on your radar. Only one season so far, but, pretty good. Chuck is the only show that I like better than Buffy.
The "rat poison" thing always struck me as particularly funny. Just like Ivermectin being a "horse wormer" that also is used for people, Coumadin (Rat Poison) is used routinely as a blood thinner. My late mother was on it for the final 20 years of her life, because they replaced a mitral valve in her heart, and she was on a regimen of "rat poison" from then on. This is a GREAT episode! It caused reveals that move the series arc forward, and lots of character development.
most people still don't understand that "the dose makes the poison". pretty much anything can kill you in the right amount.
@@sirmoonslosthismind Yeah, I'm old and take blood pressure meds. And I monitor B/P regularly. a doctor back, even when I brought in my spreadsheet, I presented with higher blood pressure at the doctor's office. I always do, and told him that I get "white coat syndrome", even at my dentist's office, every time. He insisted I double one one the meds I was taking (one BP, one a Beta blocker.) About three days later my BP was 67/45, and I was literally passing out. Fired that doctor and found one who now trusts me to monitor my damned blood pressure. 117/75 this morning.
I think this is my favorite comment.
12:45 This will never stop unless the USA finally introduce tight gun controlls. Australia also had a problem with school shootings - then they disarmed the population and guess what they haven't had a single school shooting since for over 30 years now. Guns don't protect anyone, all they do is getting people killed.
Fyi - the release of this episode was postponed because the original release date would have been just one week after the Columbine massacre.
School shootings can happen elsewhere in the world too but they only occur with such a frequency in the USA and nowhere else. And the reason for this is the insanity tht is the lack of US gun control.
Jonathan will shine again one more time.
Shhh!
We did not get to see this episode live, it was played for the first time in the middle of Summer. It's airdate, was the Columbine incident.
