I never revisited this since I saw it in theaters during the summer of '01, didn't love it or hate it, it was just...there. You know what would've been something? The cancelled '90s Planet of the Apes starring Arnold Schwarzenegger with Stan Winston doing the makeup and special effects, the test footage of the apes makeup are pure nightmare fuel. Looking forward to Kingdom this Friday.
This movie gets too much hate, a lot of that is my nostalgia speaking but I always enjoyed this installment in the franchise and I can't help but love Tim Roth as the villain he just chews up the scenery and Michael Clarke Duncan and Paul Giamatti are great too.
Just rewatched this last night, as an apes fan, I enjoy it. Not near as good as the Rise trilogy or the original, but it’s a different enough take on the story that I think makes it solid. Agree on the ending, saw it in theaters as a kid and that ending left me wanting a sequel
The ending confuses me. My take on it was the general ape got the spacecraft working and went back in time and somehow fashioned the earth in his own image before Marky Marks character got bad there maybe. beats me.
Damn, you got me excited for a second. I thought this was Kingdom review. While this is definitely the dud of the soon to be 10 movie franchise, I'll admit I kind of liked it when it came out. But then, I only first saw the original 5 POTA films in the mid 90's from the video store so I was excited for a new entry. Plus I kind of loved the twist ending.
2001 Great one.I just turned 18 and my son was born. Mulholland Drive was almost on a big screen and that's all what mattered that year. Didn't know about this version until now. Underworld Rise of Lycans is my Planet of....
As yourself, this was my entry into the Apes framchise when it came out. I had never seen any of the previous films at the time and upon leaving the theater, my reaction was the film was....just there. I didnt mind it but it was not what i expected especially the ending. I did see the original version and thought it was great. I do watch it from time to time but knowing now of the studio interference helps give me a better understanding of what went wrong.
Man you have to watch the originals… I’m on 4 right now but the 3rd one titled- “Escape From The Planet of The Apes” is one of the most underrated films of all time… I shit you not. 😂 I’m honestly surprised that I never hear anyone talk about it. Wild
I first saw this on DVD in 2012 and I remember loving it when I first saw it but over the years, now that I've seen it and just rewatched it for my revisited review of this (which I'm editing now as I comment this) but this is a bit 50/50 despite the rushed troubled production and I have the special edition DVD, I don't hate this movie here and there's enough in it to make it a guilty pleasure but as a Planet of the Apes fan and as a Tim Burton fan, it's a bit of a conflicted and complicated one.
HOW HAVE YOU NOT SEEN THE ORIGINAL(S)?!?!?? Absolute classics!!!! I probably watched them when I was under 10, and they were like WOW. JUST WOW. Haunted me for YEARS afterwards! The newer ones don’t feel the same 🤷🏻♀️ to me!
At one point, Arnold Schwarzenegger was going to play Leo Davidson. At one point in the script, Mark Whalberg shows the apes how to play baseball and the twist ending was him landing in Yankee stadium where apes are playing baseball. Lol!
I saw this movie in the theater when it came out and walked out enjoying what I saw... more than that, I loved the ending and what I took from it. What drives me nuts is, everyone hates on the ending and how it doesn't make sense with regards to the timeline and looks goofy with the Ape Cops. Agreed, logically it kinda falls apart on how that could've happened but I took something else away from it and (to me) it was a pretty damn good message. You can't go home again... he was a hero, he got the girl and could've lived out his life with a beautiful woman and a saviour to the whole planet but instead he makes a desperate attempt to go back and regain his old life. In the process, he lost it all. Imo, that is a great message about moving forward and not trying to hold on to your past... because it isn't there anymore. In that regard, it is very much in line with a messaĝe that Rod Serling (writer of the original '68) would have supported. He told quite a few stories like that in his old Twilight Zone episodes.
I was never a big fan of the ape movies. ive seen some of the old ones as a kid..I typically agree with you on pretty much most things. BUT in this case I have to say I like the real ape suits in this movie over anything CGI. BUT we all like different things so all good there. Thanks Lee
I’ve been watching the originals and man are they good lol but I do need to rewatch this cuz I can’t even remember it, seen it once when it came out and I was pretty young so. ❤
First of all l just wanna say that l love your t shirt I must have been 6 years old when this movie came out, l don't think this is a bad movie, the ending certainly stuck with me when l watched it but never felt the urge to revisit it I think the James franco movie does a little homage to this one when they mention some astronauts are lost in space but what do you guys think?
Great review lee I always found this one to be underrated reamke and it not as good as the original or the new planet of the apes trilogy but it like the nightmare on elm street remake it very soild and I love the ending to it and especially that it accurate to the book
It's been nearly 20 years for me on this one, but I remember it well enough. The effects and score were amazing, and I appreciated the darker tone. But the acting was at best uneven, and the story and twist was arguably the worst in the franchise (apart from Beneath, anyway). I don't blame Burton for preferring jumping out a window to directing another of these. But at least he gave us a fairly unique entry.
Me and my son are massive planet of the apes fans like huge and we just rewatched all the films in anticipation for Kingdom and imo this film is still a good watch, yeah Markie Mark was the wrong lead choice but he's fine in the role for me what saves this film is Michael Clarke Duncan and especially Tim Roth as Thade who i think is one of the baddest mofos in the entire ape universe and he really went for it loved the way he walked and his movement.
I do have all of the Planet of the Apes movies on DVD, Blu Ray, and VOD, and the animated and live action TV shows on DVD, so yeah, guess I am a fan. This one is probably my least fav of the bunch, including the two TV shows, mostly because it feels the least like a Planet of the Apes project. However, I still watch it from time to time. Anyways, thank you, Lee.
I decently saw this for the first time and phew Im glad I streamed and didnt spend money on it 😅 maybe I'm just too young but Rise was far superior to me over the originals and the Tim Burton film. Maybe I just dont have the nostalgia lens for this or the originals.
I wasn't interested in the remake of the Planet of the Apes movie. I saw the original on tv when I was younger and it was kinda boring to me (being a kid at the time). But I've been seeing the trailer for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and I 'want' to see this movie. But I'd want to see the other movies before this one.
Idk, guilty pleasure for me, other than i think tim roth overacted his part a little. Estella Warren is a plus ❤️. I own the original 2 disc dvd. The role paul giamatti played is the best part of this!
Tim had stated that he would would rather jump out of a window than direct a sequel to this movie. He has a reputation for rejecting sequels. The only sequel he has ever done is Batman Returns.
It’s probably the most non Tim burton movie feel of his career even his Charlie and the chocolate factory which I hate has his fingerprints on it this feels director for hire
You should really revisit the old apes films. Conquest of the apes has serious George Romero vibes. The Tim Burton film is just boring to me. Nothing compelling and doesn't have the great social commentary that the original has.
It’s a very stupid remake Lee that has an ending that only makes sense with an explanation that involves accepting information that is never supported by the movie for why the Earth is now ruled by Apes.
The only positives this movie gets from me is Tim Roth as the villain & Rick Baker getting an Oscar for the makeup. Other than that, this Remake is terrible.
I saw this movie 2 days ago for the first time & it's easily the worst entry in the Planet of the Apes Franchise. That ending was so unbearably cynical & abysmal.
This is a funny one when I first saw it I like it but over time I have grown to dislike it I like Tim Roth for being over the top the make up effects are good but it’s not doing much new the monkey crush on mark walhberg no just eww and the ending overall it’s okay
Sam Raimi and Oliver Stone were in contention to make the remake of Planet of The Apes even James Cameron and Chris Columbus were in contention before they backed out Peter Jackson and Michael Bay were offered the project but they dropped out to pursue other projects
If James Cameron were set to direct, Bill Paxton or Michael Biehn would’ve been given the lead role if not Arnold. I can see Sigourney Weaver playing the female ape character.

Agreed. It just exists. Estella Warren as the blonde girl was 🔥 tho
Arnold in a 90s POTA film would have been AWESOME!
Soooo hyped for Kingdom as well. It looks fantastic
Yeah that's the disconnect I have with it. There isn't one scene that really kicks it into high gear.
This movie gets too much hate, a lot of that is my nostalgia speaking but I always enjoyed this installment in the franchise and I can't help but love Tim Roth as the villain he just chews up the scenery and Michael Clarke Duncan and Paul Giamatti are great too.
Tim Roth was amazing. That's the one plus I can give it.
This the only one I knew at the time so I had always loved this when I was younger
I also LOVED this movie as a kid. I think ppl be too critical sometimes. This movie was awesome!
Pros:
The ape makeup is great
Tim Roth going full ham
Cons:
Marky Mark and the human bunch are dull
That dumb ending
Estella Warren is HOT
Yeah the humans are very dull.
Someone really liked Estella.
@@DrumdumsOfficialyeah, ME! 😆
Now do Planet Of The Apes (1963) staring Charleston Hester.
Wow being in Kuwaiti would be scarier than any movie. 🍿 Thanks for your service
Thank you brother!

Was that earth?, wasn’t there two moons or was that the planet at rest of the movie only and the last bit is earth, bizarre.
That's a good way of looking at it honestly.
Big Studios and Executives don’t let a person with creative passion do their thing
In this case, pretty much.
I actually just rewatched the entire original series. Ive always had a soft spot for this one, its a fun movie. Looking forward to Kingdom alot.
Nothing wrong with that.

I absolutely LOVE Rise of the Lycans.
I agree Tim Roth scared me as a kid in this movie
This movie is the closest to the original novel by Pierre Boulle. And there are 2 PLANETS !!!

They just never struck my interest growing up. No one ever talked about them honestly.
At one point, Arnold Schwarzenegger was going to play Leo Davidson.

Saw this in the theater, totally forgettable, but I do remember the last scene was lol levels bad! The Ape Lincoln statue? 😂 So awful!
