    Great review. A mate of mine has one of these and we rode from Central Scotland to the Yorkshire Dales for some green laning and he had no complaints about the wind blast, and we had a fairly spirited ride on motorways, dual carriageways and A Roads. He's taller, at around 5ft11, so maybe that is a factor in the wind blast? Maybe there's a "bad" area and getting above or below gets you out of the turbulent point..
    As a green laner, I can only go by the howling laughter coming from his helmet so i'll assume it was pretty good ...

    Maybe invest in an MRA X-creen clip on screen lip? Then you can pop it on and off on bikes to see how much a larger screen or adding on of those makes. On the 1290 with an R screen, clipping on the X-creen makes a massive difference, it just lifts the wind blast over your head once you get the angle right.

    Hate to contradict you, but I had no issues at 80mph on this bike with a Schuberth C3 Pro. I am 5.10. Yes, there is a lot of wind but not extreme buffeting. Try the F800GSA with the stock screen, that will turn your brain to jello!

    @TheMissendenFlyer Great channel very good and realistic reviews of the bikes you get to ride. I own a 790adventure R and i know about the terrible buffeting at higher speeds, i fitted a MRA touring screen to mine and it stopped the buffeting to very high degree but the screen does have a little wobble about it at times on low speed and low revs however i would recommend the screen for anyone who wanted to do some bigger miles on the bike.

    Being a tall skinny person, I experience great difficulty finding trousers that are long enough, but this motorcycle looks like a perfect fit to me! The buffeting is something I will have to test for myself. On my previous bike, I lowered the screen so the wind would hit me more evenly on the upper body, with the standard screen my neck muscles got very sore from all the wind being directed to my head.

    • @disekjoumoer
      @disekjoumoer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      On all these bikes with small screens you can put some washers underneath the lower screen bolts to angle it more towards you. That reduces buffeting quite a bit.

  • @stevebolton8471
    @stevebolton8471 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Definitely replace the screen (that's at least fairly simple to do), but KTM's are amazing bikes, love the lighting at night, the TFT and the backlit switchgear.

  • @nimrod6603
    @nimrod6603 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I took the screen off completely.
    Have my Garmin mounted above the TFT.
    Windflow is now very clean.
    I love it like this.
    Heard the higher screen is also very turbulent.
    Rade Garage is working on a rallyscreen. Might try that when it comes out.
    Best bike I’ve ever owned, including GS, GSA, FJR, 1290SAS and 1290 SAR amongst others.
    Most balanced.
    Yes the big KTM’s an GS are much more beautifully finished, but this is a beautifully balanced bike.
    Karoo 3’s are incredibly good, make a lot of noise at speed though.

    The windscreen issue is what stopped the Ducati Multistrada from winning when I bought my Adventure bike. Great bike, but the buffeting was so annoying that the bike simply didnt stand a chance against other rivals. Yes you can buy after market products to help ease the issue, but when your designing an engineering masterpiece, how can you overlook that part of design. I think its simply poor judgement. Maybe they think it'll spend more time off road than on. Cheers groovers ;-)

    All akrapovic exhausts that are options from the dealers sound no better than stock exhausts now, a little deeper sound but not worth the cost. I'm pretty sure it's because it has to meet the new euro standards just like stock exhausts do also why they don't have removable baffles anymore.

    Stange to hear about wind buffet on the 790, wherein I'm 5'10" and riding (in Africa) my 1190 Adv 'R' (with it's OEM screen) at speeds well in excess of UK legal limits, whilst wearing an Arai Tour-X 4, I've experienced zero problems with wind buffet.

    I am searching for a travel/tourer/adventure bik and have considered the following: Yamaha Tracer 700/900 GT, KTM 790 Adventure, Moto Guzzi V85TT Travel, Kawasaki versys 650, Suzuki vstrom 650, Triumph Tiger 800 XRT/900 GT, Ducati Multistrada. I have test drived the Yamaha, Moto Guzzi, Kawasaki, Triumph and KTM.
    The KTM I tried was the non R version. I can't complain about the wind protection at speed up to 100 MPH. I am also 5 foot 8 and I could not completely put both feet flat on the ground. As for comfort I found it to be one of the most uncomfortable bike that I have tested so far, so I asked the dealer to include the ERGO seats in the budget. It wasn't terrible, but the seat was the hardest of the lot I have tried so far. As for the driving experience... wow, it was the most fun to ride of all. The quickshift that works shifting up and down is great. And it really invites you to ride fast. It is twitchy and nervous. A complete blast, as for fun only the Yamaha Tracer 700 (that was also a hell of a lot of fun) comes in second.
    My main concern is that I am not looking for an off road adventure bike, only on road travel and weekend fun with some ocasional conmuting. So I am not sure if the KTM is the best choice for me. If I was looking for a on/off road adventure bike my first choice would be the KTM. even the price, compared to the other 800cc and 900 cc bike is good. Where I live it is cheaper than the Moto Guzzi, the Triumph's, the Yamaha 900 and the Ducati. Only the 700cc and 650cc models are cheaper.
    Great review.

      Do you plan to go off pavement at all? There’s some great deals on Africa twins under 10K new...And rumors of a smaller version in the works if you want lighter. I’m not pushing Honda but I’m a fan of best bang for the buck...

      @@beardedbiker2647 Thanks for your comment. You are Awesome.
      I had not seen any Honda (I did not know where the dealer was!). But a few days ago I finally found it and had a look at the Africa Twin CRF1100L.
      I had never considered it because I thought it was a very tall bike. I am 5.8 (177 cm), and I told my concern to the salesman, he told me to hop on... I did, and with the low seat setting I could reach the floor with both feet flat on the ground, great surprise.
      So, I have asked for a test drive of a few Honda models. The only thing against it for me is that the price is higher than most other bikes I am considering, so it really has to blow my mind for it to stay an option, the Africa Twin is 14.250,00 € where I live, and I can get the Triumph Tiger 800 XRT for 13.750,00 €, or the Yamaha Tracer 900 GT for 13.499,00 and the Moto Guzzi V85TT Travel is 11.990,00 €.
      I guess that if I wanted an off-road oriented bike, I would get the KTM 790 Adventure for its price (12.499,00 € local price), although I expect the Honda to be more reliable.
      I have also seen lately the MV Agusta Turismo Veloce Rosso... love at first sight, and of course it is the most expensive (where I live 15.700,00 € with no cases), but I doubt I will end up spending that much.
      I will definitively keep my eyes open for a middle weight Africa Twin, that would be sweet, I just know if I can wait long...
      Thanks for your comment.
      Have fun and drive safe.

    Wish they’d make a roadster version with a max 830mm seat height. Looks like a great bike and has the right sized engine. I’d prefer a vtwin so they could make it slimmer with those low slung fuel tanks. There’s a real lack of proper road focussed tourers if you don’t want a really tall pseudo Dakar machine. We’re stuck between the petite cramped Tracer and the overweight VStrom and Versys machines.

  • @HippoDrones
    @HippoDrones 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I quite like the looks, but being 2" shorter than you this would be even harder for me to take in the dirt, at least with the enduro bikes they have a narrow saddle so you can slide off it easier. These mid size adventure bikes are probably the new market, which I guess means I am not their targeted customer! :-)

    Hi, Could you do a review of the Yamaha Tenere 700 please.? I’d be interested to see and hear how it performs on the road. Most reviewers concentrate on its off road capabilities although it is supposed to be an adventure bike that will most probably be ridden on tarmac for a lot of the time

      Horn testing needs a firm pressure for a couple of seconds. A short tickle does not give out the full juice. Probably by design so you can alert people gently without annoying them too much if needed, with a quick tap or two.
      Using a spectrum analyser and db meter (even on the same phone every time) and in the same space would be a little more scientific too. ;)

    Stock screens on loads of bikes are absolutely terrible, the worst I've had was the Triumph Tiger Sport 1050 which truly shocking - like being in a bloody boxing ring. Palmer screen sorted that one out, Givi Airstream sorted out my VStrom...

    Was thinking this might be that unicorn bike that does both off-road and touring well. And it may be the closest bike to that elusive standard, but a Yamaha WR 250R and a BMW 1200 GS may be superior solution if you can fit both into your garage. Probably just get the street twin however.

    Interesting observation that after a prolonged dry spell, wet roads are even more slippery. On the surface (pun intended) that makes sense!
    Question: In Atlantic Canada we usually pay for motorcycle insurance by the year, and it’s not divisible by 12; in my case 80% of the cost of my yearly rate is used to cover four months (June, July, August, September) the other eight months are covered by 20% of my premiums. IE: August costs me a bundle, December is practically nothing. So, when you say insurance cost 18 £ a month, can you insure for one month? Is each month the same cost?

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t think you can no...well not in any practical way!

    • @UncleWally3
      @UncleWally3 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheMissendenFlyer: It appears to me that what is possible (and practical) now was impossible (certainly not practical) a decade ago. Why can’t consumers have an “insurance app” to simply activate our insurance coverage when we want, and deactivate it when we don’t want it? Isn’t having insurance on a motorcycle, when we’re not using it, like having the lights on when nobody is home? Or better, like leaving one’s bike idling for hours when not in use? In my area, the cost of insurance is the variable that most impedes motorcycle purchases - especially purchase and use of multiple bikes. If insurance companies could set up an app so a rider could simply activate the policy for the time period actually requiring insurance, surely that would be something worthwhile?

    I’m 6 foot two and I find it too high, I’ve heard you can get a lower seat lower by 2.5 cm. In addition it is hugely unstable over 130 kmh. Due to the longer suspension travel. It would be interesting you testing the Adventure S. They say better road manners and can go off road happily too.

    • @giuliosprockel

    Great review thanks. Insectoid headlamp very accurate! LEDs are brilliant hey. Despite its talents, the niggling omissions and little (and some not so little) Issues, are just too numerous for this bike to appeal to me. Mirrors, screen, buffeting, horn, no centre stand - so necessary to clean and lubricate the friggin chain, no std heated grips, footpeg ergonomics. I guess this makes me just a biased 1200GS person ;-)

    No info about the different driving modes, would be nice to get some fast review about them and what they do, you only really mentioned the rain mode what it does. Also came here for the non-R version review due to title, and was a review for the R version, so that was a bit disappointing.
    Additionally as far as I know you can lower seatings on the R version and the non-R you can buy a lowered version of the seat.

    Great review as always! Seems a shame to have neglected the bikes off road capability in an ‘in depth’ review though? Most of us would never take it off road I know, but that’s what the R is for? As you rightly point out, the standard is a more on road orientated bike. Love your channel, and watch loads, keep it up!

    An expensive high quality machine. My thoughts are that if you can afford one of these bikes (new or used) then you can afford to customise it. eBay prices circa £8.5k with 2.5k demo miles. £11k+ new but some amazing £9.5k deals around. These machines are clearly designed to be individualised for continental travel on all surfaces but it won't be cheap... nor should it be. General consensus appears to be that it is a great handler due to its supreme tech especially on the rough stuff (its natural habitat) where it's said to minimise fatigue very effectively. Lovely machine.
