    About me:
Hi, my name is Yixin and I'm a researcher at Keio University in HCI on supporting introspective training.
My life used to be full of rejections: from school, friends, my crush and workplaces. But everything changed as I gradually made progress on my personal growth journey. Now I can proudly say that no rejection can take me down anymore, I began to accept myself and grateful to be surrounded by wonderful things and people.
One thing I realized is that, the world didn't change - I did. so here I am, wanting to share my journey with you because I know there are still a lot of people struggling like me.

If you have real good friends, you probably don’t notice or even care wether you are «ugly» or not. You are just a friend among friends.
I was the «ugly» friend in my friend group in school, but I didn’t reflect on this or even notice it until I begun college and videos on glow ups showed up all over SO.
Real friends doesn’t care about how you look, they just want to be with you because you are you.

I have always been super shy, introverted which is not helped being 'ugly' and an Asian among mostly white kids. So I never really had friends throughout school as I never approached anyone and no one approached me. It took me a while to figure out why I was diferent to the other kids in my class, why I didn't look like them, why I didn't relate to them etc. and even now in uni I still have not gained much confidence and have not made any friends .

This! I was the ugly duckling,my best friend (gorgeous girl) was always the pretty one and I knew that but she NEVER made me feel less or talked about my appearance in a negative way...now that I "glowed up" as the youngsters say,I can joke around about how "unfortunate" I looked and even now she doesn't agree that I wasn't pretty, bless her soul.
Some people look good when they are teenagers and on some people the "developed" look looks weird, like,I didn't know how to take care of my skin, nor my hair (a curly matted mess always),I didn't know how to dress and my nose and teeth grew before my others features grew on my face so I just looked odd for a couple of years until I was an adult lol

I honestly think that most teenagers are insecure but the difference is that some chose to put others down to make themselves feel better whilst the others don't make it other people's problems.

(Efesios 2:8-9)

Sometimes, I think people are so insecure that they project their insecurity on the others just because you actually got the genuine beauty and you can elevate yourself to the next level. I appreciate to hear how you overcome in your personal journey. Thank you for sharing similar experience.

Yeah, the one compliment I got in elementary and middle school was always about my long hair. I got sick of it. My parents acted crazy about my long hair and everyone else would act like it was EVERYTHING. So, I cut it off. I hated having long hair because of others. I kept cutting it short despite hating how it made my baby face look until senior year. I bleached it twice but never had the courage to truly experiment with color. After senior year started I was worried about other things so instead of chopping my hair off to above my shoulders in August like I had been doing every year, I let it grow. Now I'm almost 19 and still havent cut it so its quite long again.
I actually like how I look with long hair. Especially now that other people arent a concern. They lost interest after I "destroyed" my hair.
Seeing my cousin experimenting and finding her style has inspired me though. I think I'll experiment too :)

i truly believe no one is actually ugly. A lot of people just dont have the confidence to try something new with their look and overtime they just get more and more insecure comparing themself to others
[edit: my point in this is not just makeup and completely change yourself; i mean simple things like a new haircut, or wearing something that makes you feel confident]

EXACTLY, if people find the right hairstyle, makeup and clothing style, they're all going to look stunning. Sure there are extremely beautiful people out there like those supermodels but no one's ugly, everyone is pretty when they have confidence and their right style. Beauty is both subjective and objective, it is also very very diverse and that's so amazing.
But when we consider the money aspects of it, there are certain limitations that's why more people cannot experiment on their styles, skincare and makeup. And when we see actors, models and influencers who use expensive skincare and other things which we do not know about, we unknowingly compare ourselves to them. Not to mention the unrealistic beauty standards which is set due to celebrities lying about plastic surgery and other cosmetic procedures.

I am so sorry for you girls having to struggle with your own skin tone and appearance. As a Brazilian woman, 32 yo, it makes me really sad. I know how aesthetic pressure is and how it makes our own insecurities grow.
I make a daily exercise trying to see beauty in every part of my body, maybe it can help you girls a little, and maybe the real glow up comes from the way we begin to see ourselves, with more confidence. I used to hate my nose, my long hands, my rabbit teeth, my feet, my thighs. And I believe it's someone's point of view fault: "we need to look thinner, we need to be feminine, we can't never be ourselves and have always to be trying to hide our feelings and the way we think". I just can hope the world change and people become more real 😢💜

wow this was so nice to watch! i’m half chinese and half european so i was always surrounded by the asian (extreme) beauty standard because of family and friends. i grew up in europe and when i was younger i was one of the only asian people in my school so i ended up being picked on quite a lot, they would call me racist nicknames and pull their eyes back to look smaller, so in that way i was never really called pretty either. in europe i was too chinese and in china i was too european, so i never really had a place to belong. it was really hard for me growing up because i wanted to fit both of the beauty standards. but now that i’m older i’ve kind of just learnt to accept who i am and that as long as i think i’m pretty i’m happy😊 this video really resonated with me, i’m really happy i watched it, thank you so much for sharing your story!

Toxic beauty standards in our society makes people believe that they're ugly and whatsoever, or something as ugly-people exist. The concept of "Glow-up" is loving yourself, not fitting other's beauty standards. If they don't accept you the way your are, it's their issue, not yours! You're not the problem, they just can't see the beauty in differences, and the beautiful differences we humans have. Pls stop trying to fit into other's beauty standards. watching this as a young adult boy is honestly heart breaking. I grew up with mostly women, mainly my two big sisters so I always had an idea on how boys in school treat girls and how it affects them, but it wasn't until my final years in highschool that I really saw how bad it was.
Girls who are deemed "not pretty enough" or even "ugly" get no chance to get some sort of romantic affection, sometimes the only attention they get are from guys who just want to use them.
Also I always felt uncomfortable talking about this stuff with my make friends because they saw it as ridiculous. "Why do you care so much?" or stuff like that they always told me, even my dad always told me to basically use women for sex and to not get emotionally attached.
I hope that everyone here finds someone who loves and respect them for who they are, everyone deserves affection and attention in this stupid world

Hi Yixin, I was this girl growing up too. I found out in my 20s I was very sick my whole life and finally got treatment and then my glow up happened. While men did treat me a little better overall after treatment changed my appearance, i think the biggest thing was definitely finding a style of clothing i feel comfortable in so i felt confident in and men got that vibe from me. When you feel insecure about your looks men pick up those vibes from you. I hope things are better for you now love. Glad you made a video about this topic and I'm so sorry you had to go through this too. Kids can be very cruel.

I was not pretty growing up, but in my circumstance, I believe it was a good thing because at the school I was going to, the pretty girls were being taken advantage of by disgusting and perverted teachers and youth pastors. Since I was ugly, they weren't interested in me. Also, boys didn't want to date me, and I felt sad about that, but looking at it now, I'm glad that I didn't get involved in dating as a teen because it was a lot more fun to discover what I liked and hang out with my friends. I was too immature to date and get into "risky" and uncomfortable situations. Yixin, you are gorgeous. Thank you for the lovely video.

I am 25 and people continue telling me I'm the nerd girl, and no one tell me I'm beautiful, only my boyfriend and my mom. I am really insecure, I cry almost every day because of that. I have really beautiful friends... I don't know what to do :,c

    • @xxkissmeketutxx
      @xxkissmeketutxx 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Nerds are intelligent. It's not an insult. You said you have a boyfriend and beautiful friends.
I'm not sure if you mean they are physically or emotionally beautiful? But if your group is beautiful...well as the saying goes... birds of a feather stick together! A group of Beautiful girls won't adopt someone ugly. Look at the other groups next time! Do you see any groups with a conspicuous ugly sticking out? Or are the groups more homogeneous!
Sweet girl, I think you are under an illusion caused by your own personal insecurity, and there are 2 strong reasons- Men NEVER EVER date someone they find ugly (unless they're getting some other compensation like money or access to perks they otherwise couldn't achieve) And a group of beautiful girls don't accept an ugly friend.
You have what it takes, don't let insecurity erode your personality and other blessings from God 💜

It's crazy how people treat others who they believe are pretty, people are so hypocritical and even though they consider you a friend they'll still end up treating you different because you're "ugly. That's what people have normalized, you can't look at anything without seeing society's standards seeping in. It's so common that even children are being exposed to it and at a young age start worrying about their appearance thinking something is wrong with them. Sometimes we don't even recognize that we treat people that we find conventionally attractive and unattractive differently

Yeah I’ve felt this way too I was always teased for acne in the past or my looks in general.. and it really hurt my confidence, but now I think something changed maybe it was being more confident? I was so insecure and a huge people pleaser, you would be able to see it too. But now my friends keep complimenting me and my friend called me pretty! And even popular girls I wish I looked like complimented me as well. I got rid of a decent amount of acne, started dressing better. Focusing on hairstyles, and learned how to do makeup better. And gained more confidence. I think with a little bit of effort, and surrounding yourself by the right people you won’t feel this way. Thank you for this video it was really nice to see. And btw I think your face shape and teeth are beautiful 🩷

There are 3 main reasons why I don’t like wearing make up even though I’m a girly girl.
-Good make up is expensive and runs out quickly. I’d rather invest in expensive clothing that lasts forever.
-It gives me so much acne so it defeats the purpose of putting make up. It just feels unhygienic when I have something foreign on my face, or using the same brush or sponge everyday and stuff (unless you totally disinfect them every single day.)
-it takes so much longer to get ready.
My sister spends like over an hour putting make up everyday covering her acne.. Sometimes you just want to go outside, but think about having to put make up for an hour, and suddenly you don’t feel like going out anymore. It is a really makes me feel the opposite of freedom. (But I do admire my sister for her determination to do it everyday. All her hard work and patience made her the successful person that she is right now.)

i relate to this wayy too much. i always felt like the “ugly” friend, was teased for being a little weird and unpopular and was really shy throughout school. only towards the end of high school did i finally figure out how to properly do my hair and makeup, and now i’m in uni i look like a different person. i’m treated way differently now too, guys hit on me (which has never happened before and makes me feel totally weird), and people generally just accept me without me having to do much. pretty privilege is definitely real. what sucks now is that i feel like an imposter, like i’m just pretending to be someone else, cuz i hide all my nerdy hobbies that i developed in my “ugly phase” and now i feel like i can’t be honest about them anymore around the people that i’m with because they don’t really understand me. i know this is such a first world problem lmao but its been bugging me a lot lately and i’ve never told this to anyone. forgive the ranting lol

I don’t know your whole situation, but please don’t skip school. I went through that as well, feeling judged and wanting to run away, but it feels so much better to have even one friend around. I stayed by myself in the library as much as I could cause I also felt that I didn’t need people, but I joined the art club at my school and I met some incredibly nice people, that type that don’t care about looks, height, weight etc and just want to talk about their interests. I know it sucks to see people who are ‘better,’ people that just seem to have everything from looks to friends. But trust me I’m in college now, it’ll get better, you’ll find people who don’t give a shit. I’m not trying to say you have to buuuut, please try to find someone! Highschool is literally the last years of being able to be a kid! It’s difficult I know, but getting over the first hump of fear is important. if you want even more reason, no one will remember after a week so you might as well try!

Aweeee. I’m so sorry that happened to you during your most vulnerable times of youth. Everyone goes through an “ugly” phase in life. Luckily I grew out of mine in HS, so I got to enjoy a part of my youth, but I’ve peeked since then, so now I’m trying to re-find myself again😅 I realized my error was that I still let those around me control my thoughts and behavior. Not everyone who’s “nice” to you, is actually keeping your best interest in mind. I’m no longer “friends” with a lot of people who I would have called “My closest friends” at that time. I’m now almost 30, YIKES, lol. Not this yr though, wooh😅 in 1 more🙃 hehe. I’m not sure how old you are but my best words of wisdom to you is; “When your young, it seems as if all views, opinions, and glances of the world is the MOST sacred thing that must be approved in your life, but as you get older (a.k.a me now) you soon learn that the only thing that should be taken for high approval is what YOU want most for your own self. Not for the world, but for YOU❤”. Something I’m teaching myself still everyday. It’s hard to not want to fit into society. To be the “pretty, popular, attractive” one, but LITERALLY looks is only temporary. Heart and status is life. So sh*t on them with your kindness n success😎 Also, no one is ever really “ugly”. It’s the people around them who is.
